      Molokini and turtle town tour
Went on molokini tour and turtle town but unfortunately due to weather conditions we couldn’t snorkel molokini. However we snorkeled turtle town and coral gardens! And the tour doubled as a whale watching tour as we ended up seeing a competition pod which made up for not snorkeling molokini! The crew def were very good and I appreciated them checking the water before we went on and making a decision to keep us all safe! Also when we were all snorkeling they had lifeguards on boards looking out for us while we were snorkeling which made me feel very safe! Thanks pacwhale for two good tours this trip!

      Best cruise ever
Was our third cruise, and by far this was the best one yet we had an opportunity to see a group of maybe 11 whales swimming together. Evan the crew was impressed and was taking pictures. We'll definitely go back again next year.

      Great sunset cruise experience
With so many sunset cruises available in Maui, we did our research prior to booking and was pleased to read that the PacWhale Eco Adventures was eco-friendly. Although we made an error in the booking process, they took great care of us and rectified the issue without cost. The staff were attentive with beverages and appies and captain Dan made sure we sailed to whale-active areas. The sunset was magnificent and magical! Would definitely book with them again. Mahalo

      Excellent introduction for beginners
Captain and crew were impressive, knowledgeable, friendly, hard-working, generous with their knowledge and enthusiasm for both customers and the marine environment. They also provided great safety measures for everyone. Ashley, one of the crew and a marine biologist led a very informative underwater tour of the Molokini Crater. We saw a huge variety of fish and coral and urchins.

Great time snorkeling and bonus whale watching with PacWhale Eco-Adventures!!
We did the Molokini and turtle arches snorkel trip with our family including our 10yr old grandaughter. It was a very comfortable boat and the crew took good care of us. The selection of food and drinks were great. We had good seats that were comfortable and had great views. Molokini was great as usual but the turtle arches location was disapointing...no turtles. Our 10yr old really enjoyed it though! While I prefer small boat trips to Molokini (this boat had 85 plus crew) I highly recommend this trip for families and people who want more ammenities. Besides snorkeling we also had a great whale show coming back. In some ways it was better than our whalewatching trip the next day.

      An unforgettable experience!
I believe we were on the Ocean Spirit, 7am, on 2/12/24. All crew members did an excellent job. We learned a lot from the narration of the naturalist, and comments by the captain. We were fortunate to see groups of up to 11 whales. Toward the end, a mic was dropped in the water and we heard the whale songs. I highly recommend a tour with PacWhale Eco-Adventures!

MUST do! Amazing trip for family/couple/all ages! Exceeded expectations!!!
This trip was THE highlight of our time on Maui! Billed as a two-stop snorkel adventure (which was wonderful!), it doubled as an incredible whale-watching tour! We say DOZENS of humpback whales on our adventure, along with so much other beautiful marine life. Both snorkel destinations (Turtle Arches and Molokini Crater) had their own special highlights - vibrant, colourful fish, turtles, a small reef shark (SMALL - I was nervous at first but the tour guides pointed it out and I even would have called it cute!) and so much more. We even saw a pelagic manta ray!!! Highlights, other than the underwater views, include the wonderful guidance of the marine biologists/guides on board and in the water. They helped make each new sighting more meaningful. They were not at all pushy with information, but always had answers to any of our or our kids questions and were happy to help out when requested. The boat and snorkel equipment were beyond expectation. Snorkel equipment was of good quality and available in all sizes (confirmed as we needed all sizes between our family members!). The boat was clean, safe and staffed by kind, informative, and cheerful staff! The food was far beyond expectation. Oh, and did I mention whales??? While they are only around during the right season, when they are (best Jan-Mar but maybe Nov-May?), this tour is a MUST. The humpback whales literally stole the show! We must have seen nearly 50 humpback whales. At any point in time, we could see whales breaching, blowing spray, tail-sailing, mother and calf pairs, competition groups -- all things I'd never seen before! SO AMAZING. The staff were so happy to help in all ways. They were incredibly kind and informative with our kids and had answers for all ages. Make sure to check out this wonderful adventure! You will not be sorry if you do! :)

Best snorkeling (and bonus whale watching) ever!
The PacWhale Eco-Adventure Tour was fantastic! We took our family of 3 kids (12, 16, 18) and had a spectacular time. The trip started with good breakfast on the boat as we headed to the first snorkel site. The guides were very knowledgeable and shared local natural and cultural history of the area while we were underway. The two snorkel sites were different and both very good. Turtle Island had a good diversity of corals and marine life. In addition to plenty of fish, we saw a turtle, eel, and a small reef shark hiding out under a reef. The crater site had fantastic water clarity and a number of larger fish too. We were super lucky to swim with a 15 foot pelagic Manta Ray at the crater site (but I know that this is a rare treat). In addition to the standard snorkeling, it is important to mention four nice things about the trip: 1) We could hear whales singing while underwater at each site and that was magical. 2) We saw dozens of humpback whales on while approaching each snorkel site. So many whales that we had to divert the boat around the whales. The captain and guides would tell us about the whales while we were watching them breech, dive, and play. 3) The guides would hang out on kayaks and help us find and identify cool things (such as turtles and small sharks). 4) The food and drinks on the trip were exceptional and the staff all worked so hard to make our trip most rewarding! We can't recommend this trip enough and would certainly bring the entire family and friends again! :)

Absolutely wonderful experience with a professional crew and knowledgeable marine experts on board. Couldn’t be better. Definitely recommend. Although it was a snorkelling experience we managed to included whale watching on the return to the dock.

      Great Whale Watching Experience
The most amazing whale watching. Our guide was one of the scientist at the Pacific Whale Foundation. She was so knowledgeable in explaining the whale migration and behavior patterns. We went right at the beginning of the season, and were still able to see mothers and babies just swimming around our boat. Also, I did rent the binoculars from the Pac Whale shop and they were well worth it.

Peak Whale Season - better than imagined!
Our 3-hr cruise had lots of whale sightings, plus a nice lunch. Sufficient room to move around catamaran for best views of whales. We saw lots of mother/calf groups, some with male escort. Also saw competition pod behavior (group of rowdy males following close behind leading female). Knowledgeable staff, environmentally conscious group, respectful of whales and Ma'alaea Bay.

      Knowledgeable crew and nice ship
We saw a lot of whales which after all is the point. The biologist on board was a wealth of knowledge and really made the trip more interesting. If you have binoculars bring them. They will rent you some but you can save a few bucks.

Best whale watch and a great cause
Sunset sail on Ocean Spirit was so enjoyable. Captain Dan is the best captain of Maui bay. His crew was so attentive and informative. Dan positioned the vessel so well to see the whales. And we love the fact that all proceeds go to the research and nonprofit programs.

I have been to Maui multiple times, and the highlight of my visits are usually the boat trips. Due to covid reduced capacity, the boats are filling up quickly, especially the smaller ones, which I prefer, so make reservations early. The only availability during our stay was on this boat. Known for being educational, this company does not disappoint on that score, as the boat went right to where the whales were, and the accompanying info, along with getting to hear the whales, was informative. Very cautious with sanitation, as no buffet so the food is doled out to you at your seat, drink orders are taken and delivered to your seat, all servers wear gloves, and boat is at half capacity, so everyone spread out. It would have been better if everyone was given a bento type box with each food offering, rather than having servers bring each item individually. Just a thought!

As far as the food, though, it was a disappointment. I could see the staff throwing away full plates of food when cleaning up because the quality was so poor that the food went uneaten. Cold, half cooked spring rolls and something that was labeled chicken, but was an unrecognizable mystery meat. The pulled pork sliders were good as was the fresh fruit. When I requested more fruit from the server, I was ignored, so in case you were wondering why you did not receive a $ tip, my tip to you is don't be chintzy and ignore requests. Have $20 cash ready at the end of the trip if you want to purchase a photo of your party boarding the boat. Pacific Whale is a nice foundation, but the least favorite boat trip of all the trips I have taken over the years.

Thank you for coming out with us to see the amazing humpback whales. We appreciate your taking the time to provide your feedback about the experience. It's certainly been very challenging to operate at 50% capacity per Covid regulations to ensure proper social distancing and doing everything in our power to ensure the healthy and safe of both customers and staff during this time. We apologize if these regulations impacted your enjoyment of the experience, and that you were disappointed in the food quality during the whale watch. I welcome you to reach out to me directly at johngaskins@pacwhale.com if you feel that you didn't receive fair value for the experience.

Within 10 minutes of leaving the harbor, we watched a large group of whales - a mother and baby, followed by a group of male whales "showing off." The whole experience was narrated by a biologist and. with the binoculars we rented from Pacwhale ($10) we saw everything close up. (We could have still seen a lot without binoculars). Got some great videos.

Our 2 hour morning tour yesterday, 3/11/20, was absolutely remarkable. Aaron, our captain, and Laura, our biologist and narrator, were great tour guides and took us to a spot out in Maalaea Bay toward Kaho‘olawe island. We sat quietly for an hour while whales were surfacing close by, spouting, and swimming under and around the boat. Unbelievable! One younger humpback stayed within feet of the boat for nearly an hour, surfacing to look at us, performing a gentle ballet so we could see this huge mammal up close. The videos we took are spectacular. Lauras narration and vast knowledge (and ability to answer questions) was impressive. The Pacific Whale Foundation is a treasure on earth in allowing us to see these beautiful animals up close while saving and improving the lives of the these whales. I will go every year I can. Don't miss the chance!

We did the sunrise whale watching with Pacific Whale and were very pleased with our choice. Pacific Whale is top-notch, with a spacious boat that provides both indoor and outdoor sitting/standing areas, including stadium-style seating. Our "narrator" during the cruise was great. She spoke very well and offered great insights. We chose Pacific Whale because of their responsible tourism accreditations (including GSTC). We saw plenty of whales on a lightly-populated boat with few other boats around to obstruct our views. Highly recommended!

We are Maui locals and have been on several trips with PacWhale over the years. This was our first trip during the pandemic though. The vessel was booked at only 50% of capacity, seating was assigned (you were allowed to move around in the vicinity of the assigned seats), the boat was sanitized before boarding, and rails were also sanitized during our 2 hour trip by a crew member.
Everybody wore masks at all times!
Especially appreciated that they now start the trips with an Oli (Hawaiian chant) before leaving the harbor.
We got lucky with incredibly calm waters and saw a dozen(!) humpback females with their newborn calves on our 2 hour trip. We even got "mugged" twice!
A male was so close that we could hear his song through the boat, just by putting our ears on the rails! Amazing.
Lizzy, the naturalist, was a wonderful educator and story teller.
    The entire crew was excellent.
It was our favorite trip yet.
    Weʻll be back! Mahalo PacWhale!

Before booking this tour, we did lots of research and watched whales from the whale lookout point several times, we were very impressed how many whales in Maui, so we decided to book a tour to see them closer. The only option we have for Jan. 1st 2021 is 2:00 pm, we were not sure if it’s a good time but they said whales can be seen anytime, so we booked this tour anyway. After around 40 minutes ride, we saw a splash, they said that’s a whale, but it disappeared very shortly. Then we wait and wait, nothing else. I totally understand the captain can’t control if whales are nearby or how many we will see, but I’m very disappointed that he even didn’t try to search whales somewhere. Then we back to the harbor at 3:50pm, less than 2 hours tour time they promised, because they have to start another tour at 4:30pm. I and my husband spent $85 and two hours just for a splash. Totally not worth it, I’ll just go to the whale lookout point and see many more whales as longer as I want.

The young guy (sorry I forgot your name) doing all of the narrative was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic. His daughter's 4th birthday was that day. He walked around later in the tour and answered tons of questions. We saw quite a bit of action along with some dolphins too. Any age person would love this.

We had an epic whale watching adventure yesterday. January is a great time to see whales! We were so lucky! Our experienced crew found a large group of whales - more than one momma and baby calf - very unusual. There were several males trying to attract the momma - pectoral slaps, head butts and babies breaching. Very wonderful. Our crew was informative and very attentive to making sure everyone could see the whale activity! Lots of people so try to board early and head to upper front of boat for best views! Highly recommend this trip!

First, I need to say that our whale watch was great. We saw tons of whales (Including a competition pod that swam under the boat and surfaced several times near the vessel) and the crew was friendly and accommodating. My two granddaughters loved talking to the crew and learned a ton. Having said that I am now very conflicted about this company. We know a guy who had lived in Kihei for 18 years. His take on PacWhale Eco-Adventures is this: "Great business model!." He told us that they underpay their crews and present themselves as a eco business that puts most of their money back into research and 'saving the whales,' but that is not the case. They do support research, but none is conducted in Hawaii. This guy said the crew members are great and dedicated but the company is just out to make a buck. I tried to do some research on their charity rating and found a warning from the BBB that they did not respond or refused to respond to a request for financials so they could make a charity rating, all of the charity rating sites had no rating for them. They do have non-profit status, though. My (admittedly superficial) research also found comments about their lack of research, "Try finding any research papers by Pacific Whale" and a hit on the fact they use a diesel boat (and reportedly advertised earlier that it was run by biodiesel fuel). I don't know what to believe and, as I stated, we had a great experience. I'm just wishing we hadn't spent a bunch in the gift shop and I'm very glad I didn't sponsor a whale...

I am sorry to hear, however, that you now have doubts about our organization based on another's take on our organization. We have built our organization based on our mission to protect our oceans through science and advocacy. Our website shows all of our current research projects in Maui and abroad, research publications and references, as well as our education and consevation programs. We stand behind our reputation built on 40 years of research driven experience, dedicated staff who are passionate about protecting our oceans and being leaders in the development of sustainable eco-tourism practices. Moreover, all profits from our eco-tour operation do indeed go directly to fund our research, education and conservation programs. Take the time to learn more about us and I think you'll have a change of heart and a better idea oif who we are and why we do what we do. Thank you again for your support.

We were to the point of being bored. Smaller vessels seemed much more able to get within reasonable distance for viewing. The fellow steering the boat was keeping the whales mostly to his right so those of us on the left hand side had poor viewing 90 percent of the time. Often could not tell what the young lady was saying over the sound system near the back of the boat. Finally at the very end of the trip out some whales approached from the rear of the boat and put in a display we could clearly see.

We thank you for coming out with us whalewatching. It’s a magical time of year here and why it is the busiest time on Maui. Everyone wants to witness these amazing giants of the sea. I’m sorry to hear that the whale activity during your experience wasn’t of the close-up nature, but every trip is different and you never know what you’ll see or witness during a tour. That’s the way with wildlife. We hope you’ll come out again should you visit Maui during whale season. I might suggest one of our lower capacity tours such as our Whalewatch Sail, Whalewatch Deluxe or Whalewatch Plus tours.
