Overview

Take a walk through history on this 2-hour food tour of DC’s U Street, formerly known as Black Broadway. Avoid the hassle of navigating on your own and instead follow a guide through historic neighborhoods once frequented by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Going with a guide ensures you visit hard-to-spot landmarks and murals, as well as cafes and restaurants loved by locals.

What to Expect

Meet the guide at 11:30am at Ben’s Next Door in the heart of historic U Street. After greetings and introductions, whet your appetite with a tasting of Ben’s famous chili.

Continue on a walking tour of U Street and Shaw, two historic neighborhoods that were once the heart of black culture in America. Pass by famous landmarks and murals, many of which are unmarked or hard to find without the knowledge of a guide.

As you learn about the impact of U Street’s music, art, and architecture, stop at a variety of establishments loved by locals for a tasting menu that includes chili dogs, Ethiopian entrees, and Jamaican tea.

After two leisurely hours, the tour ends in Shaw, home of the famous Howard Theatre. Leave with the knowledge that a portion of your ticket price goes to the area's residents in need.

Few things to keep in mind...

Food tours are about the history of the establishment and how they survived through tough times and still to this day, please the masses. Keep that in mind because the food might not be what I would typically eat in a restaurant but trying fair...More

Highlight of visit to DC

All great. We visited four family owned restaurants and met the owners. We learned the history of the establishement, their owners and the ethnic food. As we walked from one restaurant to the other, we were told about the various buildings we were passing and...More

Interesting tidbits about the neighborhoods and fun foods!

My favorite part of this tour was getting to try foods/places I normally would not have gone to by myself. We went to 4 places; 1 of which (the Ethiopian restaurant) I would have never tried otherwise. I also liked learning about the neighborhood and...More

Hi Jessica! Thank you for taking the time to write us a review! Sometimes when we have such a small group, the tour doesn't run as long as there is less to coordinate with each restaurant stop. Our goal is for you to leave the...More

Authentic DC, a feast for all the senses

The U Street tour with Aleena was fantastic. Great family activity with our teenagers. We're locals but had never explored this neighborhood and learned so much about its rich history and eclectic culture. It's a feast for all the senses. Colorful architecture, blooming gardens, vibrant...More

What a gem in a sea of mediocre food tours...

Don't miss this foodie tour! Part history, all delicious, we had the best time learning about DC's rich history with food, and all the people that came here to make it that way. So often you travel to Washington DC and learn about our nation's...More

Check the tour company for later tours. I believe there is more than one company providing tours. However, if your arrival is on time you will be able to make the 11:30 tour. The initial meet-up site (Ben's next door) is... More
