Nice boat ride, great mussels and salmon!
This was a fun excursion, cruising around the sound and tasting greenshell mussels and grilled on board farm raised salmon. There was commentary on board but it was difficult to understand outside. The scenery was lovely, the pace just right, the mussels and salmon great. Only the buoys on the muscle traps were visible; we had thought they might actually pull one up but they're probably too heavy. We received one complimentary glass of wine upon boarding - you need to accept it at that time...beverages are for sale later. The boat is fairly large, although there was not enough indoor seating for the number of people on the trip so be prepared to sit outside. My only complaint is that they never notified us that the docking slip was not as we were told initially, nor were we informed in reminder emails/texts and we almost missed the cruise waiting at the original slip. We only guessed that we were in the wrong place when the departure time was imminent and a large group of people had already boarded the boat a few slips over so we decided to ask. The crew should have walked down and told anyone by the original slip about the change!

Book this tour and ask for Tanya!
I am so sorry it has taken me so long to review this amazing tour as it really was the highlight of our New Zealand trip. We were picked up by Tanya, our WONDERFUL guide from Marlborough Tour Company. Tanya is so knowledgeable (especially as she previously worked at Cloudy Bay, friendly, helpful and happy to wait while we take photos or take photos of us! We adore her! We start at Cloudy Bay where we sample fizzy, white and red before a look round the winery (and some shopping of course!). We then head to Framingham Winery where we sample six different wines before being taken to Picton to join the Odyssey and Captain Nick for a BBQ lunch followed by seafood cruise. As we sail around the Marlborough Sounds Captain Nick tells us all about the area before we moor up and he treats us to locally caught salmon and Greenshell mussels on the BBQ, all accompanied by Sauvignon Blanc obvi! We see lots of wildlife and even get to feed the local ducks and fish! Tanya, Nick and stewardess Rhonda cannot be more friendly, helpful, kind and knowledgable. We really recommend this trip!

Marlborough Sounds boat trip was superb, but our guide ruined the day
Marlborough Sounds boat trip was superb, but our guide ruined the day. As soon as we were picked up, we started to feel uncomfortable with the highly political and biased comments being made by the tour guide (Bruce). We visited two wineries, but felt very rushed at both. The views expressed by the guide continued and a few of us were berated when expressing opposing views (and unfortunately for the guide, a number of the people on the bus are globally renowned experts in these fields!) The boat tour was fabulous once we were able to distance ourselves from the guide, the crew warm, friendly and welcoming. The sea food was delicious and very fresh - the only shame was having to get back on the bus.

      Nice day
Took this tour Sat 30 March. Our driver/guide Finn was exceptional: very pleasant and knowledgeable, and went out of his way to be helpful. Tastings at 2 wineries a very good experience. Unfortunately the cruise was let down by the rain. I’m sure that in better weather that too would have been great.

A little disappointing as we were holing for more vineyards - possibly we were booked on to the wrong tour.
We were looking forward to a wine tour but in fact only visited 2 vineyards, and even here we felt rushed by the guide as he was anxious we were not late for the lunch and cruise. We had been told by our agents we would be having lunch at the Slip Inn at Havelock, but in fact we were going straight to the cruise where we were to have lunch. This was OK - "a build your own burger" from a variety of salads, bread and burgers - with a glass of wine. We cruised out to some green shell mussels bays were we stopped and were given a little talk about the mussels and how they develop in the beds. We were then presented with bowls of cooked mussels to taste. After this the captain barbecued some salmon and again we were given samples to tast.

      Some good, some not so
We booked a half-day wine tour online with the only pickup in Blenheim (cruise ship docked at Picton ). We discovered there was only one bus and one train each day to Blenheim and only one taxi in Picton! We were lucky enough to get the taxi - at a cost of NZ$145 - to Blenheim only to find that the tour bus had then picked up in Picton after all because other cruise passengers phoned to say they couldn't get to Blenheim! Onward to Marlborough wineries with Pete the driver we visited 3 wineries and a chocolate factory. Spy Valley was a really good winery but not so Framlingham where there was no booking for the group and no shade outside (the only space available). Saint Clair winery saved the day with an excellent presentation by French sommelier Vadim and excellent tastings. Overall though f day winery toura more costly experience for us than we expected!

Why else go to Marlborough if not for this?
Excellent tour. A great way to meet friendly people and sample some excellent wines; and more than just the standard NZ pinot noirs and sauvignon blancs (which do get a bit samey). The smaller vineyards are the best - the enthusiasm of the winemakers is infectious - but there was an excellent variety. The lunch was superb and the guide made it informative and fun. Just don't get left behind like we did! We still had a fabulous time.

      Excellent Afternoon Wine Tasting
Great trip, visited 3 wineries with several tastings in each. Excellent, knowledgeable tour guide Lisa who also squeezed in a visit to a chocolate maker. Staff at wineries very informative. Tip: no time to eat anything so eat before the tour

A great Marlborough wine tour experience.
A very well organised tour which introduced us to a range of the wines and wineries of Marlborough, including a fantastic lunch at Saint Clair. Bruce was an excellent guide! All the wineries were set up to receive our small group and the transport was very comfortable.

      Would thoroughly recommend
Mark who guided us on today’s Taste wine tour was the consummate guide and host. The tour itself was very well constructed and great value for money. Unlike a similarly priced tour in Otago we did not feel rushed and had a proper 2 course lunch (which was excellent). Would thoroughly recommend

      Brilliant half day wine tour
Excellent guided tour with Lise, so friendly and informative. Went to 3 vineyards and tasted several wines at each. Also as a bonus we had a quick visit to an artisan chocolate shop. Highly recommended trip

Maybe just opt for a boat tour
I’d like to give 3.5 stars . The problem was the early morning wine tasting - which I guess was described on booking however who really wants to taste wine at 10am? And there were only 2 wineries - nautilus winery I felt was not informative enough . The boat cruise was great although if you don’t like mussels make sure you fill up on lunch - I thought there would have been more free wine on the boat !

      Top notch wine!
We were taken to several wineries and discovered there was much more to Marlborough wine than good old Sav Blanc. We sampled a number of different and innovative wines and enjoyed a top class lunch en route. Thoroughly recommend this tour. Grateful thanks go to Tanya, our guide, for making this such an enjoyable experience. Her vivacious personality, knowledge and enthusiasm made this a memorable experience and one of the highlights of our New Zealand road trip.

Run, do not walk, to do this cruise. We were taken out on the Mantra, which is a comfortable, lovely boat. There are secured beanbags on the bow so we could relax and lounge in the sun while sipping our complimentary wine. It's an easygoing and informative tour around the Sounds where you learn about the area, aqua culture and pointed out some interesting properties and sights. The food is excellent! We didn't have lunch in anticipation and I would recommend that - there is so much to eat. Bread with local olive oil and dukkah, local salmon cooked to perfection (partner said it was the best salmon he has ever had), clams and a few big bowls of local mussels. Absolutely spoiled and didn't even have dinner later that night, we ate so much. Superb value for money. All of this while taking i the gorgeous Marlborough Sounds. Captain Brittany was informative with commentary and gave us a comfortable tour on the water while Claire looked after us with food, drinks and great banter. It was an amazing afternoon with these ladies, who so clearly love where they live and sharing it with you. An absolute must-do when you visit Picton!!

After a couple of days of miserable weather, we hit the jackpot today with the sun appearing and the wind calming down. We had Ed as our skipper and Sommer as the first mate/cook/host. Both were amazing with our 5 and 7 year old boys. The cruise itself was very relaxed as we meandered through the initial sections of the sounds. We spotted a seal swimming past during our adventure on top of the beautiful scenery and stop at the mussel farm.

When we got to the mussel tasting.... it was closer to an all you can eat experience! And the mussel's were soooo fresh! An absolute highlight. So if you are heading on this cruise, ensure you have a very light lunch prior. The salmon tasting and vino was also delicious.

We finished the activities by feeding some blue cod close to the shore in a bay.

    Notes for other travellers:
    1. Very relaxed feel with rolling commentary. For example - very different to say a cruise chasing dolphins.
    2. Mussels were delicious!! And in abundance! Very light lunch prior recommended.
    3. Pack a hat that won't blow off so you can stand on the front section of the boat which has no shade protection. Sunscreen is supplied.
    4. I can imagine this would be pretty tough with children that wanted to play/exercise. Need a parent matched up with each child at all times.

    Would recommend this cruise.

From the moment we stepped onboard we were welcomed and looked after by Summer and Skipper. Lucky enough to see a seal devouring a large salmon, we also saw a large pod of dolphins and spent some time with them following the boat and putting on an aerial display, at no time did we feel that there was a schedule, rather plenty of time to experience what the sounds offered. Both staff were informative and genuinely keen for us to enjoy the day. The bread and dip was great and there were more mussels and clams than we could eat. The final treat was some excellent salmon ( not the one the seal was eating) expertly cooked by Skipper. Thank you for a lovely day.

The tour of Marlborough Sound was beautiful. The captain took us to stunning locations on remote bays and his commentary demonstrated his passion and knowledge of the area. My husband has a disability with mobility and sight issues and both the Captain, Nick and Rhiannon were extremely helpful in assisting him to allow the best experience. The tasting plates of the local seafood was lovely. The vessel was lovely snd well maintained. Thank you both for this very memorable half day trip.

We dod the cruise on November 13th and there was only two of us and they still took us out which we were pleasantly surprised. From the time of boarding we had a magical 3 hours going through the Marlborough Sounds which is just breathtaking.
The three staff were very knowledgable of the Sounds, polite and accomodating. We had an amazing mussel platter and got shown a salmon and mussel farm which was very interesting. Well worth taking this trip with a great company that runs the vessels.

We joined a large group of fellow Boomers exploring aspects of Queen Charlotte Sound on a sunny February afternoon. We enjoyed local mussels and salmon and a lovely glass of Wairau River Sauvignon Blanc. Our cruise explored local bays, a green shelled mussel farm, duck and fish feeding. It was very laid back and friendly, with nice staff. Suggest you sit on the back deck rather than inside if it’s a nice day… grab a cushion for extra comfort. A nice way to explore the Sound.

Fantastic day out! Picked up from accommodation, enjoyed two wineries - Cloudy Bay & Saint Clair, followed by light bite and walk around Picton then boarded the Mantra for our cruise on the Marlborough Sounds. Nicole the skipper was great as was Heather our tour guide. Enjoyed fresh mussels, garlic butter & white wine clams, & salmon done on the BBQ. Feed fish & saw lots of dolphins on way back in. Highly recommend!

Excellent tour and highly recommended. We were lucky, clear blue sky, warm and not windy in the middle of Winter. Great experience especially with the Seafood Odyssey tour. Reception staff (Summer) and our tour guide ( Claire) was exceptionally helpful. Good communication skill, friendly and very professional during the whole tour. All of us ( four) had a fantastic half day out. The sight seeing was exceptionally good on a clear day, The seafood provided by the tour company was fresh, tasty and finish off with a glass of local wine, Yammm....... .

Nicole, Jeffrey and the captain were so friendly, knowledgeable and fun on our cruise. The food was absolutely delicious! I’m now a salmon lover. The Sauvignon Blanc was nice and chilled and just wonderful. Beautiful views, great narration by the captain. Small group so easy to move around the boat. I would definitely recommend this trip and would certainly do it again!
