      The only way to hike!
My first multi day walk - challenging but manageable tracks, amazing scenery, friendly hikers and professional staff - with my luggage transferred each day, beautiful accommodation and food, this is the only way to hike! Very reasonably priced for the service provided.

4 day Queen Charlotte Track walk
I, my wife and three children aged between 11 and 16 did the 4 Day Independent Queen Charlotte Track Walk - Furneaux Lodge, Punga Cove and Portage Hotel - through Wilderness Guides in January 2025. This was our first multi-day walk as a family. We all loved the trip. I was happy with Wilderness Guides. I also considered that the price we paid (about NZD 1,100 per adult and NZD 900 per child) - for the 4 day walk, 3 nights accommodation, ferry and daily luggage transfers, and daily packed lunches - was reasonable, if not, good value. I will recommend the Queen Charlotte Track Walk and Wilderness Guides to friends.

      4 day Independent Upgrade Walk
The views were stunning, scenery and bush took our breath away. The walk was tougher than we thought it woud be, particularly the rocky surface on days 1, 2 and some of day 3. It would be great if there was more distance signage on the track e.g. every 5 kms. We also thought more toilets (longdrops) would be helpful. The accomodation at Furneaux Lodge & Punga Cove was great, the Portage felt a bit run down & in need of an upgrade. The bar/restaurant had run out of chardonnay in the middle of January! We were generally shocked by the lack of Marlborough Wines availabe at all of the bars and restaurants, of particular note the absence of Cloudy Bay. Wilderness Guides were good to deal with generally except when we had to postpone our dates for a health reasons and a family bereavement. We met lots of lovely people every day on the track and at our accomodation.

A truly spectacular experience, couldn't recommend more highly!
My husband and I did the 4 Day Upgrade Independent Walk - Furneaux Lodge, Punga Cove & Portage Hotel through Wilderness Guides in December 2024 and it was truly one of the best things we've ever done! We both love to walk and hike, but also appreciate good food and comfortable lodging when we're through, and this tour delivered big time on both counts. The hike itself was incredible, definitely challenging (both in terms of daily distance and elevation gain/loss) but completely worth it because we got to see things we couldn't have seen otherwise, specifically along the ridges which afforded views of the Marlborough Sound in sometimes two different directions! The rainforest part of the walks were equally mesmerizing. We could not be happier with Wilderness Guides, they were completely professional (and kind!) at every step, sending us off feeling completely prepared, with even a sack lunch that exceeded expectations. All accommodations were nicer than we're used to ;-) and the food in their restaurants was delicious. Everything went completely as planned, and we really couldn't recommend Wilderness Guides, and this particular tour, more highly!

Wonderful time in Queen Charlotte Sound
This was amazing! Kayla was our guide but all the staff was great. Plenty of up front training (I'm not an experienced kayaker) and then wonderful time on the water. Great lunch, too! Loved seeing the smacks of jelly fish and all the sting rays. I'd recommend for everyone!

A hike to remember: Wilderness Guides Queen Charlotte Track 4 day guided walk
This 70+ km hike was a memorable experience. From the initial briefing to the final debrief, Wilderness Guides excelled in their professionalism. The weather was perfect - mainly sunny but not too hot. The outward water taxi ride allowed an hour to experience the birdlife on Motuara island before landing at Ship Cove for an interesting history lesson from our excellent guide, Jenna. Each day's walk varied in its challenge, and views were stunning throughout. The track is mostly very well maintained and much of the hiking is in the shade of the bush with plenty of birdlife. The only downside is the use of the track by fast-moving mountain bikers giving no notice of their approach. Overnight accommodation was extremely comfortable, particularly at Furneaux Lodge and Punga Cove. All meals were provided and the food was excellent and very plentiful. Anakiwa and the end of the trail came all too soon!

One of the best Hikes I’ve done
We did the 4 day hike of the Queen Charlotte. From pickup to drop off the trip was fabulous. Great team from Wilderness. The hike was challenging on some days but very doable. Accommodation was tops and in some lodges food was more on the higher price. We would have preferred more casual dining but not complaining.

      Cannot recommend this company enough!!!
Cannot recommend this company enough!!! I took a school group of 12 from Australia to Picton to do the Queen Charlotte Track and the sea kayaking. The guides Jake and Shaun were excellent! They were so knowledgeable, fun and enjoyable to be around. Martyn and Hayley had exceptional communication skills leading up to our trip and we were very pleased with how they managed and oversaw our trip, including accommodation and transfers. Our students rated this trip an 11/10! We will definitely be booking this again 😊

Nice MTB trails for all levels
I came off cruise ship and rented an e-mountain bike for 4 hours. (Half day). Nice trails, well marked, not too crowded (but narrow, so caution at turns). I took easy trail and also wandered through town. Helmet provided but no lock or safety vest. Staff super helpful. Bikes in good shape with many features.

      Well-Planned Hike, Flawless Execution
This is the second time in 20 years that I have selected Wilderness Guides to coordinate my 4 day hike of the Queen Charlotte Track. Both times everything went flawlessly, from pickup at our hotel, in-person briefing of the track and what to expect along the way, boat transportation to the beginning of the track, selection of lodges and rooms, to final drop-off again at our hotel. I felt comfortable that if we had any snags along the way, we would receive a fast and courteous resolution. Their website provided helpful information, along with their maps. I would definitely choose to work with them again.

      Magnificent Memories
4 Day Guided Walk including 1 day Kayak Queen Charlotte What an amazing journey. While I didn't walk, the others in our group said it was beautiful. First 2 days were challenging but manageable. 3rd day was very challenging, some opted out of this day. (Himself and I took the opportunity to take a scenic flight which was beyond beautiful). Pelorus Air picked us up from Punga Lodge and dropped us off at The Portage. Day 4 was the kayaking across the Torea Bay. Very beautiful, the day was calm and clear, the water like glass which was perfect. It was a long trip, and we were glad when it was over, but the trip itself was enjoyable. Anyway, back to commenting on Wilderness Guides, they provided us with a problem free adventure. All of their team were so much fun and engaging. Our guides were Sean and Kayla. I'd travel with them again anytime. Great sense of humor and awesome local knowledge. The surprise was having a hot 'cuppa' on the tracks. Lunches were plentiful, we took extra nuts and bars just in case, but didn't need much. The package price was very fair, the accommodation was first rate, and the food was beyond expectations. OMGoodness the beds at night were super comfortable too. Each property provided quality shampoo, conditioner and soaps. Will definitely use this company again. Thanks guys :)

      Loved mountain biking the QCT!
We had an amazing 3 days on the QCT. We signed up for the self-guided hike/bike/kayak option, but actually ended up doing 2 days of MTB and one day of kayaking as we were enjoying mountain biking in NZ so much! The Wilderness Guides team made everything very easy- swapping our MTBs out for kayaks at the appropriate stage and so on. The MTB experience was really fun with amazing views, tiny coves and beautiful forest all the way. We upgraded to eMTBs and that was super fun, and meant less pushing up the steep sections. Accommodation (Mahana Lodge and Portage Resort) was fab too. Highly recommend. And if you like MTB i would be tempted to do the whole 3 days on the bikes - it was super fun.

We had a wonderful experience seeing the Queen Charlotte Sound up close. Our guide, Helen, was very informative, professional and friendly. She made the whole tour very enjoyable with her knowledge of the area and the wildlife. The tour was well organised, safety conscious and on time. All staff who we dealt with were friendly and helpful.
The bonus was a lovely sunny day with a light breeze!

We recently visited Picton as part of our NZ cruise. We wanted to explore the sounds and make the most of our day and booked with the Wilderness team and couldn't be happier with the choice. After delays with docking/getting off the ship, we made it just in time, and the entire team were so understanding and helpful from the moment we arrived. All gear/equipment was provided and we were fortunate to have amazing weather. Our guides were great super friendly and informative and really allowed for time to enjoy the environment whilst pointing out the local wildlife. We kayaked 10km we were told and were bussed back to where we started. The scenery was breathtaking and this tour was such a unique way to see the sound. Price was very reasonable especially compared to onboard.

Would highly recommend this tour and company to anyone wanting a great half a day in picton 😊

We had the most amazing time doing the half day kayak tour. We were very lucky that we were the only people to have booked on to the tour so we had the luxury of a private tour from Alex, our tour guide. He was really friendly and kind, providing us with a lot of interesting facts and information. As we aren’t experienced kayakers, he ensured we were okay and the tour was at our pace so we never felt rushed at all. Furthermore, the views, landscapes and wildlife were incredible. It was an amazing experience, definitely would recommend!

We had the best time with the BEST guide, Emma! Emma was incredibly knowledgeable, passionate, experienced and interested in our experience so that we enjoyed every moment, which we absolutely did.
The rest of the crew were just and great and made for a brilliant day.
…they even chucked some snacks in for us to keep us fuelled along the way. Legends.
Such a beautiful & vast area to kayak, we highly recommend Wilderness Guides!

Great afternoon on Queen Charlotte Sound sea kayaking with Rikki as our guide. She did a fantastic job telling us about the flora and fauna in the area as we paddled. We saw stingrays and seals along the way as well. I would highly recommend this experience- especially with Rikki!

This tour exceeded our expectations. All the equipment provided was in great condition, nice small group, and above all a wonderful guide. She was so informative about the surroundings, took us to all the best spots, and never rushed the group.

Would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Picton who wants to see the region surrounded by outstanding landscapes and the wondrous sea life.

We are a family of five (kids aged 14, 12 and 9) and this was a highlight of our recent cruise around NZ. Our guides Jake and George were great fun and the scenery was spectacular. We were lucky enough to also have a seal swimming in the water around our kayaks!
It was a very affordable private tour, and the guides were flexible around when our cruise docked. Would definitely recommend them!

Jamie led a terrific group of 8 on a paddle around Marlboro Sound. He was very knowledgeable and kept a smooth pace to allow everyone to keep up. We saw birds and eagle rays in the bays. We particularly enjoyed starting in the harbor and ending in a small bay so we saw more of the sound instead of up and back. We highly recommend this tour.

We were very impressed by the beauty and variety of what we saw. Even though we stayed in the inner sounds area, there were lots of birds and rays, with hidden coves to explore. My daughter and I were the slowest kayak in the group but the guides did a good job making us feel supported, with one at the back chatting with us, while the faster paddlers were with the lead guide. My husband and 9 year old son were happy at the front. The group all came together at regular intervals. Once we were into the coves, away from the pier, the pace was gentler and we all stayed together easily as there was so much to see. Explanations of the area and animals were interesting. Overall, this was a really good way to see the area, and was doable with children.

I had the most stunning morning kayaking in the sounds, with the guide Jenna. She was so knowledgeable about the sounds and local area! She told us all about the history, plants and birds in the local and New Zealand. She was a lovely girl and would throughly recommend going on a tour with her. The journey in the van was really nice, on the way back we stopped at a look out the view absolutely incredible!!
Would 100% recommend Jenna as your guide!!
