4 day Queen Charlotte Walk exceeded expectations
Very professional & friendly company. We did the self-guided 4 day walk & every step worked seamlessly & well. We were helped by perfect weather but the boat connections, track information, accommodation, packed lunches and beautiful scenery have spoiled me for other walks. I normally carry a pack, but not sure anymore… Special shout outs to David’s Chef’s Table at Mahana Lodge & to all the Wilderness Guides staff who do such a great job - especially Di who was a delight to deal with by email and phone.

      Beautiful Queen Charlottes Track
This 4 day guided walk thru the beautiful Marlborough area was such a fantastic experience. The group dynamics were lovely, the weather pleasant and Jake, our guide, was so knowledgeable about the environment, the birds, the local history. The accommodations and meals were better than expected. I'm vegetarian and for the most part the food was tailored to this requirement and still very delicious. There was quite a lot of freedom given to each group participate as to their choice to walk with the group or have some solo time, as well as the distances and days of participation. While I realize that Jake and Wilderness Guides didn't control our beautiful weather, what they did coordinate was flawless! I highly recommend.

A special memory to remember forever!
We arrived to Picton via a cruise ship and were wanting to really explore Picton with our 1 day in port, so we decided to hire some mountain bikes off the Wilderness Guides. On arrival the staff Hayley, Marty, Jake, Alex and Stevo were all so friendly and accommodating. They offered us bottled water and a backpack at no extra cost. When we returned, we surprised them with the news of our engagement. To their excitement they offered us a bottle of champagne as a gift and made us feel so special. Thank you so much for making our engagement that little bit more special, it will always be a fond memory of our time in NZ!

Couldn’t have hoped for a better experience
We went on a three day adventure hiking down the Queen Charlotte Track. Wilderness Guides prepared the trip to the T! From a lovey pick up from our hotel, to clear instructions at their base, packed lunches, beautiful overnight stays and everything in between. The estimated distances were spot on, a very welcoming detail for us first time hikers. We were blown away by the surroundings, the overnight stays and friendliness of the staff. Only sad thing was we didn’t book the 5-day hike! Something to look forward to for a next time.

      A challenging adventure
The Queen Charlotte walk included a lot of steep inclines followed by down hill slopes. The views were beautiful with turquoise blue seas and lush greenery in the ancient forests. The one day kayak was sensational with crystal clear water and a lovely picnic on the beach. Our guide Jake was full of extraordinary information, I learnt so much about New Zealand from him, even though he’s British and I’m a kiwi! Accommodation was superb with delicious meals.

      Bespoke Queen Charlotte brilliance
We wanted to do the full QCT walk but left booking too late to get accommodation in some spots. The folks at Wilderness Guides expertly customised a trip to get us around the no vacancy points and then rejigged it again when one of us was injured. Could not have asked for more.

Superb kayak and walking tour of QCS
Full day kayak and trail walk. Just us as a couple with Alex as our guide for this tour. Full briefing before we got in our kayak and off we went into Queen Charlotte Sound. Flat water and little wind made it easy paddling and we saw dolphins (going right under our kayak), blue penguins, eagle and sting rays and plenty of birds. Alex kept us informed and safe throughout, detailing the history, wildlife and activity in the Sound. After the kayak (just under 3 hours) we beached, changed, grabbed our (provided) lunch and set off on the Link Trail back to Picton. It’s STEEP at the start and trail shoes/walking boots are highly recommended, but after that it’s a steady stroll back to Picton. including the extra to the lookout (worth it), it’s 13km of hike. We lunched at the lookout and barely saw another person throughout the trail. Great organisation and guide (Alex doesn’t walk with you, but took the kayaks back). You can have them take/bring your gear if you don’t want to carry. Totally recommended.

Guide for Day 1 who walked with us only 2 hours instead of the full day to the Lodge.
We signed up for the 3 day Independent Walk with add on Guide for Day 1 only. The staff at Wilderness Guides were responsive and prompt in their replies and queries. Also communicated well with the briefing on the morning of Day 1. Everything was as expected on the QCT EXCEPT for the Day 1 guide service. We expected the guide to take us to completion of Day 1. While he was knowledgable and friendly, he basically accompanied us only till lunchtime at Schoolhouse Bay. He left us about 1.30pm so that he could hurry to catch the 4pm ferry at Furneaux Lodge. Felt let down as we had paid for a guide for our party of 6 pax so that he can help to pace us to complete Day 1 confidently. Instead he really only walked with us 2 hours to Schoolhouse Bay for lunch. We struggled on our own for the next 4 hours in the afternoon. We had no idea how much distance was ahead and how fast we needed to be. And we were left to fend for ourselves. That was the biggest letdown! Wilderness Guides should change their policy and ensure that the walking group is accompanied all the way to Furneaux Lodge. That is why we have paid the extra NZD1380 for the Guide on Day 1. Feel short changed that we did not get the service we expected.

      Great day guide walk
I took the one day guided walk at Queen Charlotte track. The guide was fantastic, the views amazing and the size of the group was good, just 5 of us (great trip mates as well). I think it’s overpriced but I will repeat again.

      Brilliant experience, expertly organised.
We did the 5 day deluxe Queen Charlotte hike with stays at Furneaux, Mahana, and Lochmara. The whole exercise was well planned with great info and advice, and meticulous attention to detail. Marty was great at advising about whether and how to curtail walks if needed. The lodges were wonderful with great food and excellent facilities as well as beautiful grounds.

      Queen Charlotte Walk
After two postponed bookings due to Covid international travel bans we finally got to experience Steve from Wilderness Guides fantastic service. He went out of his way to collect us , give advice, and shuttle us to the ferry outside his role. Our walk went very smoothly, upgrade walk accomodation was quality and the ferry service is great. Awesome experience
Walking the Queen Charlottee track is an amazing experience. Walking with this company made it unforgettable. Wilderness guides are efficient and friendly. Our guide Alex even provided plunger coffee every day. He was supported by a great team in the office.

On a clear day you cans ee forever
What a wonderful way to see the Marlborough Sounds...a four day tramp with all the trimmings. The size of the group (10) made it a very friendly group and gave Jake (Tour Guide) the time to move between each of us. Jake was an excellent guide recounting the areas fauna and history. We were spoilt by lovely tramping weather - 19-20 degrees with a little cloud cover -and what I think was a great walking track. Three of the days were 20km plus but easily manageable. The tramp from Furnough to Punga was only 14, sop repite before the longest day and the two relatively steep inclines on each of Day 3 and Day 4. Some excellent variations which enabled members to go kayaking if they chose. Accommodation at Furnough, Punga and Portage was very comfortable and nice to have access to a bar(1) after a hard days tramp.

Wonderful 3 day Queen Charlotte Sound adventure
We have just completed a fantastic 3 day adventure organised by Wilderness Guides along the Queen Charlotte Sound. We went for the hike/bike/kayak option with stays at Mahana Lodge and Portage Hotel. We were blessed by 3 days of wonderful March weather with sun and temperatures in the low 20’s for the first 2 days and then an overcast but dry day for the kayak leg from Torea Bay back to Picton. All 3 days are doable if you have good fitness but the 30km mountain bike section from Mahana/Punga to Portage was very tough. Even though the track was quite dry there were still some very steep climbs and descents that needed some good bike handling skills and also a lot of fitness/strength. There was quite a lot of pushing the bikes and we only averaged 7km/h. We didn’t see or pass any other bikers on this section, which probably says a lot. Then for the kayak we chose to have a guide and Jamie from Wilderness was superb. Friendly, knowledgable and expert with the kayaks. We were very lucky as we were his only clients but the group size is a max of 8, which would still feel very enjoyable. We did 17km in about 4.5 hrs which felt about right and saw eagle rays, shags, gannets and quite a few seals both on land and in the water. The Mahana Lodge was a lovely place to stay with the Chef’s Table option providing a very memorable dining experience after a full day of walking. Portage Hotel was also very comfortable with good food and service plus a pool or swimming off the beach to recover. This is such a lovely part of the world to visit.

Beautiful walking tour across northern NZ
We did the 4 day guided walking tour. The guide (Jack) was excellent and the walk is also excellent, mainly due to the incredible views and the variety of bush. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 stars is because we were unlucky with the weather. The track was extremely muddy due to too much rain which also restricted the views for the first two days. There had also been many landslides which didn't affect us but was evidence of the dreadful weather that the track had suffered recently. Wilderness Tours though is a 5 star establishment. They really look after you. The lodges were excellent as was the food. Only negative was the lack of staff which is a problem across NZ as we had to wait almost 3 hours for our mains at Furneaux lodge.

We recently visited Picton as part of our NZ cruise. We wanted to explore the sounds and make the most of our day and booked with the Wilderness team and couldn't be happier with the choice. After delays with docking/getting off the ship, we made it just in time, and the entire team were so understanding and helpful from the moment we arrived. All gear/equipment was provided and we were fortunate to have amazing weather. Our guides were great super friendly and informative and really allowed for time to enjoy the environment whilst pointing out the local wildlife. We kayaked 10km we were told and were bussed back to where we started. The scenery was breathtaking and this tour was such a unique way to see the sound. Price was very reasonable especially compared to onboard.

Would highly recommend this tour and company to anyone wanting a great half a day in picton 😊

We were very impressed by the beauty and variety of what we saw. Even though we stayed in the inner sounds area, there were lots of birds and rays, with hidden coves to explore. My daughter and I were the slowest kayak in the group but the guides did a good job making us feel supported, with one at the back chatting with us, while the faster paddlers were with the lead guide. My husband and 9 year old son were happy at the front. The group all came together at regular intervals. Once we were into the coves, away from the pier, the pace was gentler and we all stayed together easily as there was so much to see. Explanations of the area and animals were interesting. Overall, this was a really good way to see the area, and was doable with children.

I had the most stunning morning kayaking in the sounds, with the guide Jenna. She was so knowledgeable about the sounds and local area! She told us all about the history, plants and birds in the local and New Zealand. She was a lovely girl and would throughly recommend going on a tour with her. The journey in the van was really nice, on the way back we stopped at a look out the view absolutely incredible!!
Would 100% recommend Jenna as your guide!!

We loved this tour. Our guide was Marty and he was really knowledgeable, interesting and kind - no problem with our slowish pace. What a beautiful part of the world and so close to home. Even though it’s nearly winter, it was calm and warm and we didn’t get wet at all. Highly recommend this experience, it certainly exceeded our expectations.

We had the best time with the BEST guide, Emma! Emma was incredibly knowledgeable, passionate, experienced and interested in our experience so that we enjoyed every moment, which we absolutely did.
The rest of the crew were just and great and made for a brilliant day.
…they even chucked some snacks in for us to keep us fuelled along the way. Legends.
Such a beautiful & vast area to kayak, we highly recommend Wilderness Guides!

This was a great half day trip out of Picton. The location of the starting point was very handy, right in the center of town on the bay. The scenery was wonderful, the length of the trip and pace were just right for us. Our guide was excellent, she was very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable about the area (she was from Picton).

Jamie led a terrific group of 8 on a paddle around Marlboro Sound. He was very knowledgeable and kept a smooth pace to allow everyone to keep up. We saw birds and eagle rays in the bays. We particularly enjoyed starting in the harbor and ending in a small bay so we saw more of the sound instead of up and back. We highly recommend this tour.

Wonderful morning. Emma was terrific guide, very safety focused and knowledgeable about the area. We saw sting rays and eagle rays, and she knew just where to take us. It was hard work at time in the waves, but so worth it. Kayaks felt very stable. Gorgeous area.
