About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- johnmY4726HL0 contributionsEfficient ferry service to an amazing leg of the Queen Charlotte TrackWe booked Beachcomber as a water taxi to Ship Cove and back from Furneaux Lodge. The whole experience of using Beachcomber was great, from the first contact with the booking staff to leaving the boat back in Picton - friendly, welcoming staff; clear instructions on when and where to board the boat; a non stop commentary on the way out about stuff generally with stops to look at random wildlife that popped up on the way (seals, blue penguins etc). And they were on time at both ends of both outward and return legs. I can’t really credit them for the scenery along the track itself but it was amazing 🤩.Written 10 March 2025
- OBwan490 contributionsUnique Tour in PictonWe recently arrived in Picton on a cruise ship, and booked with Beachcomber Cruises for their Paua Pearl Farm tour. What a great day! The boat ride to Arapaua Island through Queen Charlotte Sound was beautiful. The boat captain was warm & friendly and was from the area, so very knowledgeable as well. When we arrived at the island, the Radon family was waiting for us at the dock. We had tea in their home as they told us their story and how they started their business. We also learned about how the unique blue pearles are created. We later toured the abalone tanks, seeing baby through adult-sized abalone. It was a fascinating day with wonderful hosts. We highly recommend this activity for your day in Picton!Written 19 February 2025

- W5355IKlouiseg0 contributionsQueen Charlotte sound trip to Ship coveFabulous boat ride along Queen Charlotte sound on a beautiful sunny morning .. Interesting little stops on the way to pick up and drop off people... Ian the skipper was very informative and offered friendly chats on the bridge for us to to ask further questions ..and get more information Only disappointment was only having 15mins at Ship cove...such a stunningly beautiful place ...it was spoilt a lot by having to watch the clock and not having enough time to soak up this beautiful place....appreciate things need to run to time..but would have enjoyed it much more with more time..even 30mins would have greatly improved this experience and I would have given you had given you 5 Stars ,!!Written 12 February 2025

- Extraordinary58690 contributionsA very nice way to spend a morningWe had so much fun. We were part of the luggage transfer for trail walkers. Was led a small part of the trail. Saw the world’s smallest dolphin the hector and the largest the orca. Good commentary.Written 28 January 2025
- Adventure361922556490 contributionsAn a amazing afternoon amongst the SoundsLoved the trip, was a truly amazing afternoon, our guide the pilot/ captain ( if that's what he is called !! ) made the trip interesting, with his knowledge of the area ,with a couple of amusing stories, thrown in. Obviously loves his job!! I would of liked to of gone to Ships Cove, but never mind still a great afternoon, very relaxing!Written 3 January 2025
- 905carinh0 contributionsGreat tourWe had such a great time on this 2.5 hour tour We booked it from our cruise ship and had a thoroughly enjoyable time The commentary was just right - to too much talking but very informative I would suggest this tour - 5 star!Written 28 December 2024

- mahatinu0 contributionsNice cruise on the SoundsWe did the Ship Cove boat trip with Beachcomber Cruises from Picton. Very scenic cruise through the Sounds (and these really are Sounds, unlike Milford, Dusky and Doubtful which are actually Fjords but wrongly labelled "Sounds"!) Had a half hour stop at Ship Cove before returning to Picton. We chose to stay on the upper (outside) deck for the best views but it did get a bit windy at times so bring suitable clothing. Our cruise ship was docked at Shakespeare Bay, and from there we had a complimentary shuttle to a Picton drop off point. From there it was a 5 minute walk to the Beachcomber Cruises office. We had pre-booked, online.Written 13 December 2024
- Cdawd0 contributionsDisappointing tripWe did the Motoura Island stop before going onto the Ships Cove to Furneaux Lodge walk. We'd thought it would be one of the highlights of our trip but it was disappointing. Complimentary coffee on board is advertised but there was none during the 1 hr trip to Motoura Island on the motorboat. We couldn't hear the explanation too well because of the noise of the boat. We had thought there would be more commentary - the people on the mailboat cruise (they picked us up) seemed to have had better commentary. The return boat had issues so we had to wait for a replacement to come, which is fine, but instead of keeping us waiting at the Lodge, where we had warmth and drinks, we were told to get to the boat around 3:45. It was a miserable day but we had to wait on the boat for close to 45 minutes. Poor service. I'd say this is more like a water taxi and less of a cruise.Written 2 December 2024
- David B0 contributionsGreat half day trip on the waterA great experience getting to see places on Marlborough Sound that we wouldn’t have got to any other way. The skipper was really friendly and informative. Given the length of the trip (some 4 hours) the cost seemed very reasonable. Would thoroughly recommend.Written 24 November 2024
- janewO9245SC0 contributionsFriendly efficient serviceFriendly and efficient service between Picton and Queen Charlotte trail, dropping us at Ship Cove and picking us up from Punga Cove 3 days later. Lovely views over the Marlborough Sounds and the crew pointed out wildlife along the way. It was quite pricey but there aren’t really any alternatives.Written 7 November 2024

Nice friendly staff in the Beachcomber Cruise office. Easily accommodated a day change for us.
No fuss check in and left on time. We had a great Skipper for our cruise, Ian’s commentary brought interest and some humour to the passengers. The vessel was large and stable and provided good viewing through the large windows. Mail bags were exchanged and passengers delivered and uplifted from various points.
Would recommend this trip. It is good value.

We booked this cruise from a very helpful member of staff in the Beechcomber office on the quayside late Tuesday evening for yesterday afternoon’s cruise. We went to East bay and Endeavour Inlet ( it is a different route each day). We had expected the scenery to be spectacular which it was, but the bonus was the skipper ( Jason)’s informative commentary. He was knowledgable, relaxed and amusing. We moved from the upper deck to hear it better inside the boat. Most people automatically opt for the top of the boat which is possibly better for views but you do need very warm clothing. The boat travels very fast so hand onto your hats! Great job Beachcomber!

This was a fun and interesting way to spend an afternoon in the beautiful waterway Queen Charlotte Sound. The weather was perfect and that enabled us to enjoy the fresh air along with the gorgeous scenery. The skipper's commentary was interesting and informative. He had spent his entire working life on the water here and his skill in manouvering the boat into a position to drop and pick up mail bags was impressive.

The company offers GoldCard discount, but only if you book by phone which attracts a credit card fee. I went to make a one way booking on the mail run but they initially refused to give me the discount even though there are no exclusions in their advertising, I had previously received the discount on a one-way booking, and the office had confirmed the fare would be discounted, in advance.
The commentary on the trip, like that on many ferry & bus trips, was engaging for the punters but riddled with inaccuracies (e.g. ‘the NZ King Shag is the world’s rarest seabird’ – it’s not even New Zealand’s rarest, maybe the 4th. ‘The karori (sic) introduced by Māori is the size of a mouse and didn’t do any harm to the environment’ – far from the truth). Overall, there was a distinct ‘brown man good to the environment/white man bad’ theme. In reality Māori were responsible for the extinction of around 50% of NZ's vertebrate biodiversity prior to European settlement.

Hi Bob55Auckland
Thank you for your review, I'm sorry to hear that you were not happy with your discount. All of our payment options include the credit card surcharge of 2% if you book online, over the phone or in person. Discount cards entitle guests to 10% off any scheduled cruise or day walk, not one way fares, this has always been the case with our reservations. We will pass your comments about the skippers commentary onto the team so they can fact check their statements. I'm sorry that you did not enjoy this.

We had high expectations as this was a top rated Picton excursion and we were only in town two days. We were first in line and nestled in our seats up top. The first thing we learned was that hats will blow away up there if not held onto. (Wish that had been in the write-up so we would have been better prepared,)
The trip details weren’t as clear as they could be so expectations were not in alignment. Captain Jason was a personable man with a fun sense of humor. However, we could not hear him on the upper deck. We made only two mail deliveries. We did see dolphins, but only for a few seconds. And the group got off the boat for about 20 minutes at Ship Cove where Captain Cook’s commemorative monument is. That was nice. The disappointment came on the way back when we turned from mail boat to water taxi, picking up walkers shuttling them from place to place. We would have preferred a lodge stop along the way for coffee in the same span of time it took us to pickup and deliver all of these walkers. The four of us ended up on the boat’s main floor, trying to see out water-splattered windows for the entire way back. (We noticed some Picton passengers hardly left their seats in the 4 1/2 hour sailing.) Not sure why this excursion was rated so high. Maybe more details for passengers to better understand what to expect (that the 4 hr trip is really mostly running errands). To end on a positive note, Jason’s commentary was engaging and full of interesting information. The reservations team was also terrific.

Hi Packlady2015
Thank you for your review, we are glad to hear that for the most part you enjoyed your trip out on the Mail Boat. The nature of a Mail Boat is that we do pick up and drop off things along the way giving guests a chance to see the most of the sounds as possible, heading in and out of all the smaller bays and coves along the way.
Thank you for your kind comments about our team, our skippers and reservation team work really hard to ensure that every guest has a really memorable and personal experience so we are glad to hear that we delivered on that part.
Many Thanks!

An enjoyable afternoon. Be prepared and take warm clothes and a jacket in case the weather turns and you want to stay seated on upper deck. There is coffee on board and you can purchase a reusable cup for just a few $ and it’s a great keepsake. It was fun to see the kids and locals (and their dogs) at each stop, keen to meet the boat and exchange mail.
The commentary from the pilot was interesting as he was native to this area and knew a little of the history. Take some snacks and you’ll have a great trip!

What an amazing way to experience the Marlborough Sounds and get a small insight into how people live in the remote coves. Sitting on the top deck gave the most awesome views, Dress warm for the wind whatever the weather is on land! The captain’s commentary was spot on and informative and he was accessible on the bridge o have a chat with and ask questions. The whole trip lasted just under 4 hours and was well worth it!

Four of us joined our knowledgeable and fun Captain, Jason and about 60 others on a boat trip to deliver mail. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much mail scheduled for the day and the sound was super windy.
A tightly fitted hat with a chin strap or a hooded coat highly recommended if you sit on the upstairs outdoor deck. Which is highly recommended. However be prepared for wind and cold. You can also get wet from ocean spray if you sit on the sides.
The seats in the covered main cabin were comfy but you couldn’t see out the windows because they were spotted with water. It was also stuffy and crowded.
We saw a few dolphin, birds, a few fish, a few seals, and some beautiful scenery on the way out to a stopping point near the Tasman Sea where Captain Cook landed. We stretched our legs a bit and then jumped back on the boat. This first half of our trip was super fun.
The 2nd half was extremely disappointing. We stopped several times to pick up people and transport them from one little remote resort to another. We also picked up hikers and transported them. This took us to the same spots as when we rode out. It also added 30 minutes to a very long, windy, cold boat ride.

Hi Allison C
Thank you for your email, we are sorry to hear that the Mail Run did not meet your expectations. Part of the tour does include the visits to the resorts to pick up people who have been out walking for the day, we do find that most people enjoy these stops as you get to see some of the more bays and coves and adds some extra interesting stops.
We hope to see you in Picton again at some other time,

I have to say this is the most disappointing cruise trip I have done in New Zealand in three weeks.
For $75 we sailed across the channel to drop people off at a lodge, then moved to the next cove to feed fish for 10 mins, then went slowly passed a moored log container before viewing a big cruise ship and then picking up folks who had visited a nature reserve.
NOT the trip that was advertised or expected. If I had wanted to be on a bus/taxi I would have not signed up.
I contacted the company about my experience but did not hear anything back except "they sent my comments to corporate". VERY poor.

Hi
The cruise is run by Beachcomber cruises and the number is +6435736175. They have an email if you check their website but Trip Advisor doesn't let me include links. They also seem to be on Facebook and Instagram. There's no indication on their website that they're not operating the office and I would think the service is running even without passengers as it's the only food and mail lifeline for some of the people out in the Sound.
