    Up close with alpacas
I've always wanted to visit Shamarra Alpaca Farm so on recent day trip to Akaroa we went for a day-after my birthday treat (please note you do need to book first, you can't just turn up). Unfortunately, being July, although it wasn't raining at the time, it was damp underfoot and there was low cloud, so what I imagine would've been beautiful scenery was somewhat obscured. I'd highly recommend wearing gumboots during the wetter months. We didn't take a change of footwear and although there are brushes there to get rid of the excess mud, our shoes were still left a bit dirty which we were conscious of when we then went on to Akaroa. It's also a bit muddy in the winter months around the entrance to the farm shop so we traipsed mud into the car. The road/driveway up to the farm is single lane, however the staff are awesome at ensuring you won't meet someone coming the other way. The staff were all very friendly and polite. We learnt so much about alpacas. We got to get up close to a number of them, including some younger ones. To my surprise, the male alpacas are more sociable than the females. Our tour group were small, we met a lovely family over from Sydney, I hope the rest of their travels around NZ went well. The hot drink and snack afterwards is a great idea. I'd highly recommend this farm tour to anyone who likes alpacas. It would just be better to do it in summer.

    We loved the alpacas!
We loved getting up close to the alpacas, they are so cute and fluffy, and they were happy to be patted! The guide was very friendly and knowledgeable, she knew all of the alpacas names and was happy to take photos for us. The farm is in a beautiful location with stunning views of the Akaroa Harbour. Tea, coffee, juice and homemade biscuits at the end of the tour was also a very nice touch. This is a must do if you are going to Akaroa!

    Wonderful Experience
My husband and I were delighted we visited the farm with very friendly staff and really stunning panoramic views! But the best thing of all is we get to be close to these beautiful creatures, the alpacas! We enjoyed the experience and we will definitely come back with the whole family members.

    Absolutely worth a visit
Absolutely loved it! So many cuddly alpacas, and a great opportunity to get up close to them. The staff were friendly and very knowledgeable. Definitely good value for money. Plenty of time to see/pet/feed the alpacas and complimentary biscuits and drinks at the end. Definitely on my list for somewhere to go back to. Went with mum who isn’t a huge alpaca fan (like myself) but she also had a fantastic time and said it was well worth it. The property also has magnificent views over Akaroa and surrounding mountains, we had a perfect weather day for it!

    Awesome experience
We had a wonderful time at the farm. The staff is wonderful, knowledgeable and serviceminded. Out tour guide, I, was really good and made sure to guide kids to the animals who like petting the most. The alpacas are wonderful creatures and the background with the Akaroa harbour, Akaroa and the mountains just made it even better.

    Best experience ever!
My boyfriend and I booked the alpaca tour and all I have to say is that it was such a good experience, I’m so glad we did it, the tour guide was so nice and very knowledgeable, we were like 10 minutes late because we got a little lost but they were still really nice… I fell in love with the alpacas!!! After the visit they became one of my favorite animals 😬🧡 If you have the chance to go don’t miss out the opportunity, it’s 100% worthy.

    Locals visit for first time!
We are locals who have a bach in Wainui and so have driven past it for many years - but had never been to Shamarra So we decided to be tourists in our own back yard and arranged a visit after a lovely lunch at French Farm Winery. We had such a wonderful time - much more laid back and much more contact with the beautiful animals than we had expected. Cuddles, feeding the alpacas, watching their amazing faces and learning about their care. Lydia is so kind and nice. The views were stunning - breathtaking even for us who live here. The shop is marvelous. So as locals we highly recommend visiting Shamarra - a very memorable and relaxing experience.

    Highly recommended by the locals
We are locals living in Akaroa harbour basin for 30 years - but had never been to Shamarra until our relatives in London told us they follow Shamarra on Instagram. So we decided to be tourists in our own back yard and arranged a family trip. We had such a wonderful time - much more laid back and much more contact with the beautiful animals than we had expected. Cuddles, feeding the alpacas, watching their amazing faces and learning about their care. Lydia and her colleague "I" who guided us were so kind and nice. The views were stunning - breathtaking even for us who live here. The shop is marvelous. So as locals we highly recommend visiting Shamarra - a very memorable and relaxing experience.

    CERTAINLY WORTH A VISIT
Certainly worth a visit and we were lucky enough to have the delightful Lydia to show us all her favourite Alpacas. She was so knowledgeable and knew them all by name and their different habits. Beware the shop - a reasonably priced tour ended up very expensive when including a beautiful rug I couldn't resist!

We had a "private" tour around the farm as there wasn't any other booking besides us that day. Lydia (our guide) was fantastic in explaining to us everything about her alpacas. She was very knowledgeable and we could really sense her passion and connections with the alpacas! Lydia patiently answerd all our questions and even shared interesting trivias of different alpacas. My wife and i enjoyed ourselves thoroughly and it was definitely worth the drive from Christchurch to Akaroa. Thank you Lydia and Shamarra Alpacas for the wonderful experience!

The drive from Christchurch is about 1h20min. The ticket is 55USD regardless if you buy it online or on the spot, the difference is only to book your spot as it might get busy. There are 3 timings per day.
You get to spend about an hour with alpacas, feed them, pet them, took pictures. There is coffee/tea/water and homemade buiscits after the experience.
Very nice day spent, I would recommend to everyone who loves animals and beautiful sceneries.

This was without a doubt the highlight of our trip, so much that we went twice on our two day visit to Akaroa.
Lydia our guide was brilliant and we learnt so much about these adorable alpacas that are extremely well cared for and loved. As soon as we arrived, we knew we wouldn’t want to leave. We will always treasure the special time we spent cuddling , feeding and patting the beautiful alpacas and learning about their funny personalities. They are truly amazing and the babies so gorgeous, the fantastic views are an added bonus.
If we could have taken a couple of alpacas home we would have but managed to take home some beautiful knitwear from the well stocked shop instead. We will be back and already planning our next trip just to visit you, this time bringing more family.
Big thank you Lydia, for welcoming us and making this memorable visit an experience we’ll never forget :-)

Awesome experience! Their last tour is 4pm and we arrived 10minutes late but they still accommodated us and let us join the last tour. The staff, Lydia and Chen are both great! Gave us a lot of facts about alpacas and interacted with us from start to finish. It also seems like all the alpacas are well taken care of.

I had a great time visiting the alpaca farm in Akaroa. It was a one-hour tour that included a lot of interesting information about alpacas, such as their behavior, personality, and lifespan. I learned how to tell the difference between male and female alpacas, and how they interact with each other and with humans. They were very friendly and gentle, and my kids enjoyed feeding and petting them. The farm was located in a beautiful spot, overlooking the sea and the sky. The scenery was breathtaking and added to the charm of the experience. The farm facilitator was very knowledgeable and passionate about alpacas, and gave us a detailed briefing before and during the walk. They also kindly accommodated us without a prior booking, which we really appreciated. The tour ended with some light refreshments and delicious homemade cookies. It was a perfect way to end a lovely day. The farm visit was very well organised and enjoyable. I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves animals and nature.

Not only was the experience of feeding Alpacas in one of the most picturesque places in the world amazing for any animal lover, the BEST thing about this tour were the staff. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable and only too willing to help out. Our 1 year old got upset and not only did they help us leave the tour (when we asked) to calm him down, but once he had some refreshments (offered by them), we were welcomed by staff to rejoin the tour. Staff told us about individual alpacas including their name, their family and their temperament and were too happy to help us take photos. We would recommend this tour to anyone visiting the Akaroa region.
