Blown Away
Jan 2020 • Friends
Finding our tour organiser was simple - we were given clear instructions and updates through the TripAdvisor app - and we found our tour and boarded our mini-van.

Janet, our driver was immensely knowledgeable and gave us information on everything. Our seats at the back of the van gave us quite a decreased view, but this was offset with plenty of quick stops for panoramic photo opportunities. Honestly some of the most breathtaking views ever.

The journey to Christchurch was 90 minutes, which we were prepared for. Janet gave a great commentary on the heartbreak and triumph that is Christchurch today. As well as points of interest, spectacular street art, and development/destruction, she also pointed out potential lunch spots and toilets - important info for us travellers👍👍 - and then gave us two stops for sightseeing and then lunch.

Our trip home was a different road - a mixture of a steep decline - lunch did not enjoy that bit - totally my own fault - and then flat plains with a strong wind that was determined to blow us back to Australia!! Janet delivered us safely to our division point, where half our group went to a farm visit and we continued on with a new driver to The Giant’s House at Akaroa.

Luckily Rob was quite outgoing and comedic which made the transition quite smooth. Two of our group members had sustained injuries previously so Rob organised to bring us in closer than normal to the Giant’s House - thank you for going above and beyond what was required, I don’t think two of our group would have gotten in otherwise. And this was definitely well worth the effort to get into! Absolutely loved this artist’s vision of a fantasy garden-scape.

Thanks CLT for an amazing day.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review of your time with us on your Banks Peninsula and Christchurch tour including the Giant's House. I am really pleased that you enjoyed yourselves and had such a wonderful time with your driver/guides, Janet & Robert, who were with you that day. We pride ourselves in hiring dedicated, knowledgeable, and engaging tour guides that know how to step up to every occasion, and it's great to see that on this particular day they did just that! I'll be sure to pass on your kind words to both of them. It's also great to hear that you enjoyed your visit to the Giant's House too, which has became one of the most popular attractions to visit in Akaros. Overall, we are really happy that you were able to have such an enjoyable day thanks to our itinerary and guides. Thanks again and I hope you get to visit Akaroa and Christchurch again soon!

Don't Take This Tour if You're Taller that 5'5"
Jan 2020
The tour bus seated sixteen people. The seats were narrow with virtually no leg room. My husband I and were so uncomfortable that when the bus made it's first stop we asked for a transport vehicle to come and get us and take us back to the wharf. We were more than willing to forfeit seeing Christchurch and the Giants House. The tour guide asked a shorter woman to change seats, which she did. The new seat was a sit better, but my knees still bumped the seat in front of me. Also, it was next to impossible to see any of the sights that were being pointed out. The three hour round trip to Christchurch should never be taken in a packed van of that size. I would have given 0 stars to the tour, except for the private tour of the Giants House by the owner. We chose to walk back to the wharf (almost a mile) rather than get back on that van.

It was always disappointing to receive poor reviews, especially when you receive a 5 star review for the same tour for the same day. The vehicle the reviewer is complaining about is a 16 passenger seat VW Crafter with coach seating, panoramic windows and is less than 12 months old. Having spoken with the driver who looked after the customers on the day, they were the last to arrive and board the vehicle and were unhappy with where they were seated in the coach from the outset. Please read both reviews and judge for yourself.

Visit to Akaroa and Christ Church
Dec 2019
Tour guide was extremely knowledgeable about both Akaroa and Chrsit Church. Christ Church is quite a distance from Akaroa which was a lovely seaside town. Felt a little rushed in Christ Church, but our time in port was limited.
Was surprised to see still much of the ruins from the earthquake.
The Giants House was like nothing I have ever seen, an eccentric French artist has created usually beautiful creations in tile.

Thanks for the great review of your Akaroa to Christchurch tour with Giant's House. I'm glad you had such a nice time in both the beautiful Banks Peninsula and Christchurch City. The Giant's House is an incredible local attraction in Akaroa with stunning mosaic sculptures and well crafted gardens. With regards to your comments about the time in Christchurch, the tour includes a 30 minute stop at the Botanical Gardens, a 20 minute guided coach tour of the CBD and a 45 minute stop for lunch in the central city before heading to the Giant's House. For those who wish to spend more time in Christchurch, our usual Banks Peninsula and Christchurch Sightseeing provides more time to explore the city and its surrounding landmarks. Regardless, I'm glad you had such an enjoyable time visiting both Christchurch and the Giant's House. Thanks again and I hope you get to visit New Zealand again soon!

Not enough time
Dec 2019
Transfer from the ship was dealyed, so we arrived at 1032 at the meeting point, our bus had already left and we needed to take another one. 120 seconds seemed too much...
45 minutes in Christchurch for Sightseeing at University, then 45 minutes in CBD to get some takeaway food, not a single photostop during the trip to and from Christchurch...

Stop at giants house was late and not much time either, had we decided to take the bus to go back. So we decided to walk back to the ship, which gaves us some extra minutes

The scheduled report time is 10.15 with a 10.30 departure. On the day of travel we had around 150 passengers booked on various excursions and nearly everyone had checked in and received their boarding passes for the various excursions by around 10.00 am. For those that arrived early we were able to arrange early departures and for the very few who were late we held a vehicle back to catch up with the excursion. The reviewer actually arrived some 10 minutes after the scheduled departure time and the late departure which was not something we could control obviously impacted on the time in Christchurch. Had the reviewer arrived at the time requested he would have had a more complete day.

Exceptional Customer Service
Oct 2019
We were a group of 6 senior adults who engaged Leisure Tours for this tour. The tour itself was as advertised. Christchurch was a bit disappointing as they have not really recovered yet from the destruction of 3 years ago and our time at the Gardens was too short. We spent too much time at The Giants House leaving less time at other venues.
The reason I titled this "Exceptional Customer Service" is because we were on a cruise and when we arrived back onboard the ship I discovered that my pocket camera must have fallen out of my backpack.
As the ship was pulling out of the pier I called Leisure Tours office. The manager listened my tale, said " that tour guide just pulled in let me check". He came back to tell me they had the camera. He then asked where the ship was going the next day, asked what tour we were doing and arranged for me to pick up my camera the next morning at the Information Center.
Thank you for the exceptional customer service!

Thank you for taking the time to submit your review. We are sorry to learn that you found the tour of Christchurch a bit disappointing, as our Banks Peninsula and Christchurch Excursion does receive some excellent reviews. In addition most customers like to spend longer at the giants house. It is great to hear that you found our customer service exceptional.

Visiting the Giant's House is whimsical and fun!
Nov 2019
We had a lovely time on our tour and particularly enjoyed going to the Giant's House. We met the artist/owner who clearly has her own way of doing things. She was colorful and quirky and quite adamant about not taking any pictures inside the house. (You can buy a book with pictures of the inside and of the artist.) We asked if we could take her picture and she said, "no." But she was happy for us to photograph all of the outside art. It's quite a collection.

Our time in Christchurch was interesting but rushed. I would have liked more time to explore, particularly the areas still suffering from major earthquake damage and the memorial with the white chairs to the victims of the earthquake. I would at least have liked a few photo stops. It's not easy to get good pictures while on a moving bus. We did get a little time for lunch and a few minutes to wander in a pretty botanical garden, but an extra 30-60 minutes would have been helpful. For those of us on a cruise ship, our time was limited, but I think we could have managed that and still made it back with time to spare.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review of your Christchurch City and Giant's House Tour from Akaroa. I'm pleased that you enjoyed your guides and that you enjoyed your shore excursion as a whole. I'll be sure to pass on your kind words to Josie at the Giant's House when I next speak to her. With regards to your comments about your time in Christchurch, we do our best to spend as much time in the city as possible, including a 30 minute stop at the city, a guided tour of the city by coach, and a 45 minute stop to explore the city by yourself. We would love to spend longer in Christchurch but we are limited by the cruise ship berth times at port, and we have to allow for enough time to be back at port before the last tender. Even when we have a decent amount of time before the last tender (which is most days), many passengers can still feel nervous when we try to stretch that time beyond its schedule - plus we have to meet the owner of the Giant's House at a particular time too so it works better this way. We do have a much more comprehensive tour of Christchurch City on our standard Banks Peninsula & Christchurch Sights which offers more sights and locations in and around Christchurch City. This tour allows for more time in the city compared to our combination tours such as this one. Thanks again for the review and I hope you get to visit New Zealand again soon!

Beautiful area
Nov 2019
Our driver was very informative and gave us information about Christchurch City, and the earthquakes and damage to the area and the re-building of the city. Loved the Giants House Tour, it has many statues outside made up of broken tile, etc. and there are many plants, flowers, shrubs, and trees. Great tour, I highly recommend it.

Thanks for the great review on our Christchurch City and Giant's House excursion from Akaroa Port. I'm really pleased you had a nice time and got to learn a lot of information about the city of Christchurch. And it's great that you enjoyed the Giant's House too. This is the first season we have conducted this particular tour, so it's so nice to see that people are enjoying themselves! Thanks again and I hope you get to visit New Zealand again soon.

Very disorganized and poor communications upfront
Oct 2019 • Couples
The Ruby Princess was an hour late getting in which I understand creates a lot of headaches. That said, the tour operator had one person checking on for many tours and well over 100 people and it was very chaotic. I am not complaining about him as he did the best he could but he needed help!!! Then communication was poor. He said due to backlog of buses a bigger bus was going to take us to town to our smaller buses. We thought downtown Akaroa, not 1.5 hours to Christchurch. Then upon arrival to Christchurch our bus was not there for another 30+ minutes.

Once we got our assigned guide and bus, she did a great job!! Kudos to her! The new bus had big time technical issues with the sound system and she worked around them the best she could! Plus the shoulder straps to our seats belts kept locking up, making them very tight.

Not too impressed with the tour operations and equipment. Luckily we had a great guide! Not sure on using this company again.

We completely understand your frustrations however, those should be directed at the cruise ship and to some degree the poor weather on the day. As you mentioned, the cruise ship decided, for no apparent reason, to begin their tenders an hour late on this particular day. Due to this, it meant that the tenders and coach loading areas were much busier than usual and hence there was a backlog of coaches, waiting on passengers. As you will have seen the loading area is very small with only five coaches permitted in the loading area at any given time. Our given departure time is 10.30am, however, with the late tendering by the cruise ship, by 10.30 we had less than a quarter of our 200 plus pre booked passengers. Rather than delay the departure for those who had managed to get off early and to avoid our customers standing around in the miserable wet weather we loaded our coaches with those customers we had ashore. Although many of the customers were doing different tour options all were travelling to Christchurch and the first part of the excursion is the same in all cases. What this meant was that some of our customers had a little longer in the Christchurch than those who were delayed in coming off the cruise ship. However, everyone got to experience the tour that they had booked. This change to our normal procedure was explained to everyone as they were loaded on our coaches and for those who understood what was happening this arrangement to get them moving and not have to wait in the rain was most appreciated. Logistically as a company we were extremely organised, given the circumstances, and to say that were weren’t is a complete unawareness of what was happening on the day. As for the other matters you raise, I am a little confused to why you have taken issues with things that were to be expected. Firstly, you booked the Christchurch Sights with Giants House, which is not a local tour of Akaroa as you should have noticed in your itinerary. Secondly, all of our tours that leave from Akaroa to Christchurch include a 30 minute stop at the Botanical Gardens/Christchurch Museum for people to explore on their own, as per our published itinerary. As for the technical issues you experienced on the second coach, this is something that we have looked into – but we cannot find any issues with either the seat belts or the sound system and no issues have been reported by any of our drivers or other customers.
