- gabbybisschops0 contributionsBest Akaroa experienceSuch a fantastic cruise. The staff were so friendly and kind. They really care about the animals and the nature. We didn't get to swim with any dolphins but I was so happy to have been able to see them and I love that the company cares about ensuring the dolphins are comfortable before putting people in the water with them rather than just getting people in the water regardless. Despite not swimming we got to see dolphins, seals and a lot of bird life. Would highly recommend.Written 29 March 2024
- HackswithRak0 contributionsExcellent day with Black CatI was booked on the 0930 Dolphin Swim. Black Cat is very professional, setting us up with a briefing, wet suits that fit, complimentary lockers for our belongings and dry bags to take along cameras and phones. We set out to find a playful pod of Hector's dolphins. Black Cat guarantees that if you're not able to swim with the dolphins, they will provide a partial refund. The boat captain, Des, and his assistant, Harriet, were very knowledgeable and ensured the comfort of all participants, including warm blankets, hot chocolate and home made ginger snap cookies. Well worth the experience!Written 24 March 2024
- DenaF3430 contributionsFantastic!!!Great experience. Safety and explanation of the whole experience was clear. We LOVED our experience. Granted that you cannot control nature, however we lucked out and dolphins were everywhere. Bonus included penguins and fur seals. Truly a memorable day. Staff and skipper were top-notch.Written 14 March 2024
- j_durban0 contributionsFun morning outGreat tour company. Guides were informative and entertaining. Unfortunately we didn’t get to swim with the dolphins as they weren’t in an interactive mood but it was great to see them swimming beside the boat. Also added bonus was penguins and seals.Written 26 February 2024
- 656kristianb0 contributionsA fun timeIt was an adventure no doubt. We saw several pods of dolphins but when we got in the water they disappeared. We had fun and I got shots of our group rising and falling with the ocean swells, but in the water no shots of dolphins. Because the outing didn’t meet their standards of a dolphin encounter they refunded us all a percentage of our fee and we didn’t have to ask. I thought that was pretty stand up of them.Written 16 February 2024
- 907JLeMay0 contributionsFabulous fun!It was a gorgeous and hot day when we visited. We enjoyed being out on the water. The crew were attentive and friendly. The color of the water was absolutely magnificent. Hector’s dolphins put on quite a show at multiple points of our cruise. We went out into the ocean and marveled at the towering sea cliffs and geological formations. The only downside was that there were too many people on the boat and the journey felt a bit crowded. Other than that, it was a fun adventure.Written 5 February 2024
- petersfun0 contributionsGreat experienceThanks for all, we booked the snorkelling tour with dolphins but as snorkelling was not possible on the previous two tours we were asked if we wanted to change to the harbour tour. That was the best decision ever - we saw at least six groups of 2-6 dolphins right next to our boat - simply wonderful.Written 5 February 2024
- Michele F0 contributionsFantastic trip and wonderful staffIt was absolutely brilliant the staff were amazing. The dolphins were beautiful to see. I’d recommend this company without doubtWritten 2 February 2024
- Jessica F0 contributionsAmazing ExperienceWe had a fantastic time! Even though we didn't get to swim with the dolphins, we spotted many! One of the dolphins gave us a little acrobatic show, which they aren't really known for. We saw an moma and a calf! Our guide Dani and skipper Chris were informative and engaging. Made the whole experience of feeling like an over stuffed sausage in the wetsuit absolutely worth it.Written 31 January 2024

We had a lovely cruise of the Harbor. The captain was very experienced at spotting and attracting the wildlife. He'd play with the engines to churn the water to encourage the dolphins to play nearby. At one point we had 13 dolphins swimming around the boat. We saw penguins, seal pups, orange krill and a jelly fish. The captain was informative and entertaining without talking too much. The woman working below was helpful with my daughter who was dealing with motion sickness.

Hi Chocolateer,
Thank you for your great review and for your kind words about our Akaroa Harbour Nature Cruise. We are proud to say that our skippers are professional and dedicated to providing an entertaining, informative and safe trip for our guests all the while manoeuvring the boat to maximize viewing potential (hence the churn of the engines). Thanks again for sharing your experience and we hope to see you again soon!

A great day out - with a friendly and welcoming crew.
The guide kept us entertained the whole trip with historical and ecological highlights as well as the odd Dad joke.
The skipper handled the vessel confidently and expertly and allowed people into the wheelhouse at one point.
We were really fortunate that the weather was good and there were dozens of Hector's dolphins about as well as fur seals and albatrosses, including the Southern royal albatross.
We highly recommend this tour.

A great couple of hours of entertainment and relaxation with a bit of education thrown in as well.
Dolphins, seals and even krill! Plus a range of bird life...even a Fletcher top dressing plane doing its thing. Informative commentary complete with a good range of tour guides dad jokes...some of them even made you crack a smile. The 2 hour trip was discounted to $67.00 when we visited and they even throw in a free hot drink and a postcard so in reality you're paying a little over $30/Hour per adult head for entertainment and fresh air. That has to be good value.

Skipper Kate and her all-girls crew were great hosts for our 2 hour tour.
Kate provided an informative commentary covering the historical, geological and wildlife of the harbour. We were fortunate to see some hector dolphins fairly early into our cruise, although most sightings did not last for long. Further down the harbour we stopped at areas where shags, gannets and seals we’re residing.
I recommend you take a jacket whatever the weather. We left the Akaroa wharf on a warm sunny afternoon with almost no wind. A couple of kilometres down the harbour there was a cool wind which got stronger and colder as we went. Well before the harbour entrance we came into sea fog which lowered the temperature further.
A great adventure exploring the richness of nature in the harbour.

Hi Barry5252, woohoo go the all girl crew - that's so awesome! We are so glad you had such a great time out with us. Thanks for also recommending for other potential passengers to wear warm clothes, the weather is always a little unpredictable out on the water, so it's a great reminder! We hope you can join us again one day soon.

Amazing Experience! Set off from Akaroa and within minutes we had spotted an hector dolphin, Everyone was in high alert to spot more. The crew did a great job to ensure social distancing and the commentary was excellent by the skipper. We managed to spot some Penguins, NZ fur seals and a pod of Hector dolphins at the harbour head - AMAZING..as we headed back to akaroa we spotted an hump back whale. Amazing trip

Friendly and helpful crew led by the wonderful Kate. Saw dolphins, penguins (which apparently are rare but on that day there were quite a few) and seals. The only thing I would recommend is taking binoculars for the seals (not that near) and the penguins (very small!).

A very succussful cruise.
We found pods of a few Hector dolphins close to the headlands to the Pacific Ocean. They circled, chased, and ducked under our boat in numbers from 2-4. My wife observed a trio of dolphins breach as if performing a synchronization routine, an image of a lifetime.
I was able to catch (barely) photos of them cavorting but neither saw nor had the opportunity to capture this wild, spontaneous action. I did get a number of good images of the other sea life and of the headlands landscapes which were partially trapped in sea fog banks.
Thanks to the advice of the reservations desk, we avoided a mob scene of school children on the similar morning cruise. We fit in well with our co-cruisers who were practically all adults.
After Seasickness issues on a whale seeking cruise, I began taking seasickness pills 2 hours before departure, kept taking per instructions, and avoided wearing to much clothing to avoid overheating. Also, this cruise was in better protected waters with much smaller swells.

Thanks for the great review. If possible we do try to group people on cruises and swims that will go well together, it works better for everyone. Akaroa harbour is amazing, it can look different every day with the way the fog sits or the sun shines, it is truly beautiful! So glad you enjoyed the trip and the Dolphins were keen to put on a show!

We are avid wildlife & natural history travellers and as such have done many tours and trips around the world based on these interests. Therefore we understand that wildlife viewing can be a hit & miss affair based on the day. But our Black Cat wildlife cruise was exceptional in that we had terrific weather, sightings of large numbers of Hector Dolphins and young approaching the boat, white flipper penguins, sea lions and were able to venture into the Pacific to see a number of albatross. The commentary was great, the skipper & crew had a good knowledge of the area, history, landmarks & wildlife, plus the boat was large comfortable and stable for photography. Would highly recommend to anyone finding themselves in Akaroa looking for a quality tour. Thanks for a great experience.

Black Cat deliver a fantastic tour which I highly recommend. Over the course of two hours we saw multiple dolphins, fur seals and one penguin and we received fantastic commentary on the area and the formation of the caves and inlets. Our family of five loved the experience.

We will be in Akoroa on Celebrity cruise ship, 14th March 2020 and would like to do this cruise do you run a pick up service from the cruise terminal ? can we book directly with you?
Written 23 November 2019
I booked direct but you'll have to ask the business if they do a pick up service.
Written 24 November 2019
Is this cruise within flat water of harbour or out in open sea. Concerned about seasickness - is this likely to be an issue?
Written 11 June 2019
It was like glass the day we went on the cruise, but as I said in my review, we were really lucky with the weather.
Written 7 July 2019
Very interested in this tour cruise, especially possibly seeing penguins in the wild. We will be traveling from Christchurch for a day in Akaroa on either June 20 or 21, 2019. I am having difficulty finding transportation from Christchurch to Akaroa for that time of year. After extensive searching, the only one I found is through Bookme on a bus called Akaroa French Connection, which doesn't get us in Akaroa until 11:10am and the return bus departs at 4pm. Are you aware of other options for June? Does Uber or a taxi provide services in that area? Thank-you.
Written 14 April 2019
Sorry, cannot really help either except to say Uber or Taxi would be very expensive. You would possibly have enough time to do a boat trip between 11am and 4pm but nothing else. It is winter then too so likely pretty cold. Would recommend an overnight stay as sea may be rough and boats may not go.
Difficult decision for you. Maybe wait until you arrive and decide then.

We will travelling from Christchurch center to Akaroa, not sure the time we could arrived. Thus will like to book at 3:40pm timing. If on the everyday, we could arrive for the earlier timing, could we change to earlier timing?
