- martindM7093KR0 contributionsGreat kayaking experienceGreat experience. Hadn't kayaked for many years, great to get to do it again, and in a great location. Our guide was Peter. He was very knowledgeable about the area, the history and the wildlife. Would recommend this trip.Written 30 December 2024
- charliebR7206DE0 contributionsGreat full day of activities for AdventurersThe sea was perfectly calm and no wind making it a perfect day for kayaking. Everyone in the group including Quentin our guide was fun and friendly making the trip even more enjoyable. The self guided bike tour around the crater rim was magical and the Ebikes made it much less challenging so that you can enjoy the views and explore even beyond the recommended route without it being a hardcore workout.Written 23 December 2024
- L3764BPhannahs0 contributionsExcellent experience in nature! We had a fantastic time out in the Harbour! We booked through Bookme which was smooth, and were contacted by the company to say that because the weather was good, we would go further and was that ok - yes!! Peter was a great guide, chatty, informative and made everyone feel welcome. We were lucky enough to see seals, dolphins and lots of birds! No penguins, they are in the next bay over which is protected. We had thought about doing a wildlife cruise/swim as well but after doing this we felt we had already had an amazing experience and didn’t need to splash out on the expensive, less eco friendly tours. Peter was very thoughtful about the wellbeing of the dolphins, ensuring that when we spotted them, we didn’t approach them, but stayed nearby to see if they would come to us, which they did! What a beautiful way to enjoy nature, thanks Peter and co! HasWritten 14 December 2024
- Navigate434562804210 contributionsGreat time - you won’t regret it!It was a great experience, I highly recommend it. Peter was a brilliant guide, had a great sense of humour and was very knowledgeable about both the cultural and geographical history. We went out on an overcast morning and got caught in a bit of rain, so didn’t manage to see any dolphins but it was still a fun experience none the less! Definitely a fun experience even if you have next to no experience like us!Written 7 December 2024
- donyah2120 contributionsIf only one thing, do thisWe started at Onuku Marae on a calm day AND we actually saw hector dolphins. They came by and went around our Kayaks. We also saw Shags, Cormorants, seals and pubs ☺️ Highly recommended Peter, our guide on the water who was energetic and enthusiastic to ensure we see and do as much as we can.Written 4 December 2024
- teillom0 contributionsChill sea kayakingLovely tour. Very peaceful out on the water and lots to see up close. Very friendly and helpful tour guide, Peter, who provided a relaxed vibe and you felt like you were in good hands.Written 28 November 2024

- Journey174942958400 contributionsLovely morning with lots of animals and info!Peter gave us an amazing tour of the marine reserve. We saw Dolphins right after launch, seals and all the birds the region has to offer. Peter also told us much about the geology and both historical and cultural importance of the place. We always felt safe and as avid sea kayakers Peter also showed us some fun gaps and caves to go through - always respecting marine life and vegetation. All in all, couldn’t recommend this enough! Go in the mornings as wind will be down.Written 24 November 2024
- gasgenie0 contributionsBreathtaking views over AkaroaThis e-bike tour was offered to me as a replacement for the.kayak safari I had booked - weather and wind were too unfavourable for being on the water. I would thoroughly recommend it as an activity to do around Akaroa. There are spectacular views to be had by getting up to the heights above the town, and an ebike is definitely needed to conquer the hills. It isn’t very physically taxing, but I would say that given the steep descents some degree of confidence on a bike is advised to maximize the enjoyment of the experience. My guide, Peter, is normally a kayak specialist but proved equally adept as a guide for the bike tour. He was cheerful and enthusiastic despite the early start and the cold wet blustery conditions, very knowledgeable (especially given that he is not a Kiwi) about the history of the area, Māori culture, the surrounding ocean and wildlife. He was attentive to my comfort and safety. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in his company and can imagine that he would be a great kayak guide as well.Written 20 November 2024
- Kareem Q0 contributions"We're gonna need a bigger boat!" 🦈Great experience! Our guide, Peter from Norwich made it very enjoyable and memorable. He provided us with a nice insight of Akaroa with it's history and some fun facts about the flora and fauna located around the beautiful peninsula. Highly recommend it! 👌Written 20 November 2024
- Alexandra_K_B13130 contributionsGreat Sea Kayaking Experience!!We had an amazing time with Peter! He was incredibly knowledgeable about the history, flora, and fauna of Akaroa, which we loved learning about. There was some wind in the beginning, and he made us feel super comfortable with the waves. It made for a true sea kayaking experience! The wind completely died down early in our trip, and we were left with the glassy harbor. Would highly recommend this experience!!Written 11 November 2024

- Msapers0 contributionsWonderful tour of Akoroa! We had a fantastic sunrise kayak tour with Greville this morning. Weather was perfect, water was calm, and Greville was great...so knowledgeable, entertaining, and fun! What a wonderful way to see the beautiful area surrounding Akoroa and get a good workout at the same time. Saw some wildlife including seals and marine birds. Heard a lot about the Maori history and geological formation of the area. Highly recommend.Written 31 October 2024

- jonathone9310 contributionsPeaceful and great for beginnersA peaceful excursion. Got to see different birds and rare rock formations in the shoreline. Unfortunately no penguins or dolphins this time of year. However, Stuart, our guide was friendly and gave us interesting knowledge about the bay. I would recommend this, but in penguin season!Written 28 September 2024

Our guide Jake made the day special. He was very knowledgeable and passionate about sea life, kayaking and New Zealand, and he ensured all of us were safe and able to enjoy all the bay had to offer. He was also sensitive to preserving the peace and well-being of the animals and environment. The group was small (four plus Jake). The two person kayaks were very stable, and included foot pedals for steering and a skirt around the cockpits that helped keep us dry. We saw Hector dolphins (from a non-threatening distance), tasted seaweed (actually delicious), held strange sea creatures and learned a great deal about the bay and New Zealand animal and plant life. And we had a lot of fun! Thank you Jake for a fantastic day!!

We were in a group of seven. Joey was a fantastic guide with great knowledge of the history, flora & fauna of the lake and surrounds. Kayaking is a great way to see all of this in a peaceful and natural way. We were so lucky to see a local dolphin within metres of our kayak! It was not too difficult for us kayaking novices. Just need a good sense of balance and mild fitness. Highly recommended.

We had a wonderful kayaking experience with Joey. He was extremely knowledgable about all the coves, animal and plant life, and obviously, about kayaking. He gave us a brief, but thorough safety run through, then we hit the water. Joey was able to answer all questions, keeping a running commentary about the area. It was a very fun excursion that we would willingly repeat. We encountered many birds and one adorable penguin floating along.

Jake and Joey were amazing guides. They were extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. We are not experienced at kayaking but these guides quickly put us at ease. They pointed out some amazing wildlife during the tour. Jake and Joey were very safety conscious. I can highly recommend this tour and would gladly do it again.

We drove down to Akaroa from Christchurch specifically to go kayaking. It turned into such a fantastic trip.
After grabbing breakfast in town, we went on the 11:30 am tour with Jake and Joey. They were very friendly and helped us get all of our gear for the adventure. Jake took our group of six people in three kayaks around the harbor.
Jake was an extremely knowledgeable guide. He knows a lot about the birds, geology, and history surrounding the harbor. He kept our group informed while we kayaked around. I kayak frequently and love when I have a knowledgeable tour guide. It makes it worth the price.
We saw many birds (my new favorite are the Shags!). We even got to see two dolphins!
All in all, it was a beautiful trip. This company takes safety seriously and will change the trip based on the winds. The guides are knowledgeable, and the scenery is positively gorgeous. Highly recommend!

From booking through to arriving back on shore this was an excellent company to work with and they delivered a top notch experience. Hazel was our guide and was exceedingly good - she was knowledgeable, friendly and got on well with our group.
There is a lot to see and we were lucky to have calm water.

Joey was a fantastic guide. He was knowledgeable about the local geology and wild life. We enjoyed his jokes and eye for spotting details (fun to know you can brew beer from the roots of the cabbage palm and cool that we tried seaweed.) Exploring by kayak is the best way to appreciate the details of this unique ecosystem and support it by making a sustainable transport choice! Super fun time paddling :)

Before this activity, my partner and I had virtually no experience with kayaks (and I also have an irrational fear of octopods hiding in seaweed, which: irrelevant), but our guide, Joey, was both professional and personable, so we were able to relax very quickly.
The summer day we did this was remarkably similar to a winter's morning, but the rowing kept us warm and distracted. The pace and distance were totally manageable for us, and there was always something to look and marvel at. I really enjoyed the sea caves (the tide prevented us from getting too close, unfortunately) and seeing terns diving into the water. My partner enjoyed all the views, plus the fact that neither of us capsized.
Joey (an American) surprised me (an actual Cantabrian), with his wealth of knowledge of Akaroa harbour: geology, ornithology, Maori history, European history, local salmon farm mishaps, where to get decent fish and chips, I could go on. Whatever topic I brought up, he always had some facts or stories to share about them.
We didn't see Hector's dolphins on our particular journey, but we are both still so pleased we had this experience. I already had many happy memories of Akaroa from my childhood, but seeing it from on the water itself has given me a more intimate appreciation for the entire harbour.

Fantastic choice for a scenic kayak tour in the gorgeous Akaroa marine reserve!
We knew that swimming with dolphins was a risky option for Akaroa (never guaranteed) but still wanted to see the sights of the harbor.
Found the Akaroa Guided Kayak Safari and were super happy with the experience!
The volcanic basin waters and beaches were of course beautiful, but in terms of the tour everything was really well done.
Easy to find the pickup spot, the kayaks were excellent, the splash skirts kept even mom warm and dry, and Jake our personal tour guide was engaging, knowledgeable, and funny!
He also took some spectacular photos of us out on the water, provided after the tour for no additional charge.
Thanks for the great tour, everyone at AGKS!

Hi, are the any restrictions for pregnant women? My wife will be 17weeks and our dr. Says it won't be a problem. Also, is it possible to reserve a 2person kayak?
Thanks!

Hi! I wanted to know if this is something that a senior could also do. Are there any options for three people kayaks or canoes? Where my mother could sit in the middle and use the paddle minimally?Thank you in advance for your response.
Written 22 October 2018
As far as I could tell they mainly had one or two person sit in kayaks. I think however that it is possible for just one capable paddler to manage the kayak while the other just remains a passive passenger

I see the forecast is for 11C and cloudy. do we need wetsuits or warm clothing? how wet do you get kayaking? I'm a little hesitant as I hate being cold. thanks
