This is a great trip even if you’re not really into boats, or the idea of sailing is a little bit scarey. We had winds up to 30 knots or more (50km/hr) and the Tucker handles it with comfort. Our Skipper, Wayne, installs confidence and humour, while the 2 crew couldn’t do more to make everyone happy. A trip ashore to a gorgeous island was the highlight. Small groups make it especially enjoyable.

The R. Tucker Thompson was the highlight of our bay of islands stay.
The ship itself is wonderful. The sails are entirely manual so one of the first things you do is help hoist the sails. The whole trip is full of great moments. Whether it is the absolute beauty of the bay of islands or the quiet moments when you admire the elegance of the rope knots.
As we got out further on the water, the crew informed us we could climb to the top of the sails and this was fantastic. Climbing up is tough and a bit intimidating but once you get up to the top - Magic. Feeling the wind blow on your face as you look out upon the stunning sea and islands. For a fleeting moment you feel the adventure and freedom that sailors used to feel in a different time. I ended up climbing up to the top twice!
The crew were also great. In particular we enjoyed the young sailor Zeron who shared about the bay, the history and his personal connection with the boat. The R. Tucker Thompson is used to help teach teenagers about responsiblity and team work. Judging by Zeron and the other crew member's attitude - it is working. He was awesome.
Also Captain Tim was as salty as a captain as you will ever need on a sailing ship. It was a lot of fun chatting with him.
You will get as much as you put into this tour so climb the ropes, get on the boat and go have an adventure on the R. Tucker Thompson.

Despite the less than perfect weather, little sun followed by overcast skies but most disappointing but for a very short while little breeze for full sailing, we had an excellent trip. The crew, under the watch of Captain Ben were friendly, informed and went out of the way to ensure one and all was having a great time, whether climbing the rigging, raising the sails or just relaxing "on the water". Highly, highly recommended.

Well organised and very friendly, professional sailing cruise on a two masted classic small sailing vessel. Commentary, historical anecdotes and banter were interesting and good humour. Morning tea/coffee and delicious cream and jam scones and the a very tasty lunch. Stopped at truly beautiful and historic bay on one of the islands - the beach is nice sand and the bush behind the bay is full of native birds.

I went on this cruise as a single person and enjoyed every minute. Interaction was encouraged but I diidn’t feel I had to . The crew were fantastic - really kind people who clearly love what they do. The best part of the experience is knowing that young people of Northland may one fat benefit from my $ spent on this cruise.

We had a wonderful day on this tall ship - hoisting the sails, climbing the rigging, taking the helm, swimming and of course having a great lunch with a cold beer. Wayne is an informative and friendly skipper.

However, our most amazing moment was on our short lunch walk on Moturua Island where we were lucky enough to spot a kiwi!

But whether or not you spot a little guy, this trip is highly recommended.

Kia ora, thank you for your feedback. We're glad you had a great time on board. We have heard of Kiwi being around in daylight in the past few weeks, it is unfortunately because of the drought conditions. We are all working on getting water out to the islands for our poor birds.

What a brilliant day! The crew were so friendly and informative and happy to chat. The boat readily swallowed up a crowd of us with plenty places to sit, stand or climb the rigging or bow sprit! You could get involved or just chill out. Lunch was delicious (thank you China!) and we had opportunity to go ashore to an island either by boat or swim! A fabulous day made very special by the crew and especially the captain ( sorry can’t remember everyone’s names) Highly recommend this trip for a relaxed trip around the Bay.

The sail was an excellent experience with capable crew; however, the wind was very light and we therefore had difficulty with sail power only. Guests were allowed to climb the masts and swing out into the water. Lunch was good with second servings of the food available. We made a stop and took a zodiac to shore to walk through the forest to view birds.

It was a full ship (47 guests I think), but great fun. The seating on the wood deck could be tough on one's behind, but well worth it! Lunch was very good and altho' we were one of the last few to board after our island stop, there was plenty left for us! Wayne was a great captain ... but suggest you sit close to him in order to hear his interesting and informative stories. He selected an island which was not crowded with other ships and we really appreciated that. Wish we had taken the other path on the island though ... those folks saw a kiwi (not normally out during the day, but there's been a bad drought so they forage whenever they can).

Kia ora, thank you for your lovely review and appreciate you taking the trouble to submit it. We apologise for the delay. Yes there were kiwi out in the day last year and unfortunately this year we have another drought so we are concerned for our birdlife again.

A marvellous day. In awe of the skilful and friendly crew (Skipper Ben, ably assisted by Jess, Michelle and Abby) who made it a day to remember. Scones and lunch delicious and plentiful too. Such a great cause too, supporting young people to find their best selves through team work and onboard experience. Thanks 🙏 again for a wonderful day.
