- georginar8530 contributionsPicnic tour Rabbit Island and beyondFabulous easy set up on bikes, self guided so maps were easy to follow.50 km on an e-bike and a touring bike. Lunch was yummy and plentiful from The grape escape cafe. Trails were easy with plenty of birds and open scenery- usual headwind later in the day but earlier no problems.Written 22 November 2024
- Luke J0 contributionsAmazing Spooners tunnel cycleOur experience with The Gentle Cycling Company's Spooners Tunnel self-guided tour was exceptional, thanks to Chris and Bernie. They provided us with excellent bikes and clear route instructions, making the journey through New Zealand's longest disused railway tunnel truly unforgettable. Chris’s local knowledge on the shuttle up there was very informative, ensuring we knew where to stop for pies and scones. For anyone visiting Nelson, I highly recommend this tour with The Gentle Cycling Company—it's a perfect way to explore the Nelson area at your own pace.Written 21 July 2024
- fionab820 contributionsAwesome in AutumnGreat service with drop off and pick up of bikes. Bikes great - loved the gel seats!! And important information given re Mapua Ferry Service not working on Mondays.....and who to phone to charter the crossing.Written 16 May 2024
- 740PaulK0 contributionsCycling in Northeast New ZealandWe found this bicycle tour to be extraordinary. Bernie, Chris and Bridget were very helpful. They gave us great flexibility on picking up the bikes and also dropping them off a bit late. We found that the bikes were in great shape. We bite for two days and enjoyed the coastal route to rabbit Island to be very much fun. However, the trip to Spooner tunnel was extraordinary. We were climbing a hill. We were very glad to be using E bikes for this trip I would highly recommend you use gentle cycling company for your experience in the Nelson area. There’s no better way to see this part of New Zealand then on a bike. We were in New Zealand for two weeks. We found this to be our best adventure.Written 3 April 2024
- rej51750 contributionsNice, gentle rideWe were picked up in the morning by Bernie, the head of Gentle Cycling, who is very focused on her clients. The bikes were great and the day was a good one. The tour took us from Tahunanui to Ruby Bay via Rabbit Island and Mapua. After getting past the airport, we enjoyed the scenery and water views. This is an easy tour that most anyone can do.Written 2 April 2024
- elanbush0 contributionsWaka and Wheels tour is fantastic! We did the Waka and Wheels tour. Everything was outstanding. The communication was prompt and professional throughout. The waka tour was one of the highlights of our trip, so fun and informative. Chris went out of his way to make sure the bike portion was suitable to our time and fitness.Written 2 April 2024
- c0linval0 contributionsA Great Day OutWe biked from Tahunanui to Rabbit Island. An interesting ride that follows to estuaries until the bridge to cross to Rabbit Island. A mixture of surfaces and entirely flat. We had amazingly helpful friendly service from this company. It was 50k return which is the longest we have done. I can recommend it all.Written 14 March 2024
- 561lesleyh0 contributionsWell organised and funWe did the 6 day "Loop the Loop' tour which covered the whole 200K Great Taste Trail and an extra day in Mapua (definitely recommend this extra day to explore this area and have a lovely winery lunch at one of the great venues in the area) This was a most fabulous tour and so well organised by the Gentle Cycle Company. The trip notes provided were excellent with lots of suggestions re where to stop to coffee/lunch etc and the accommodation booked for us at the end of each day was well chosen - very comfortable, clean and often quirky! Every night, Bernie checked in with us to make sure we had arrived safely and were happy with everything. The E bikes were brand new and perfect for the terrain. We loved everything about this trip from start to finish. We will be doing more tours in NZ thats for sure.Written 10 March 2024
- Nomad046182992780 contributionsThe Tuscan Tour...best cycling day possible! To say that I surprised myself today is something of an understatement! Having not ridden a bike in years and being only mildly fit, I happily managed over 30kms of terrain and I am still smiling! WHAT A DAY!!! The weather was superb and cycling was glorious. We also enjoyed an amazing brunch in the shadey gardens at 'The Grape Escape Cafe' in Nelson and a yummy home-made fruit ice-cream in downtown Mapua. Chris, the owner and main operator at Gentle Cycling, prepared us for a super successful day out. This started with him picking us up from our accomodation. Back at base, and the beginning of our ride, our strudy steeds were all ready to go. Chris armed us with all the necessary information, including maps, great tips and specific advice to ensure our safety and success. It struck me how passionate Chris was about ensuring our experience would be the best one for us. He willingly customised the tour information to suit our preferences. Although we were on the Tuscan Tour, we decided not to focus on wine this time, and that was fine too! Note that your day can be completely tailored to your interests, carefully planned or equally left open, as you choose. If you're not sure, following Chris's suggestions is the way to go! No matter what, you will feel super safe and relaxed with the preparation Chris puts in to ensure you have a great day. The 'Tuscan Tour' we booked, took us along the well marked 'Taste Trail' and through Rabbit Island to beautiful Mapua. The crossing on the Mapua Ferry was a well appreciated rest before discovering the delights of Mapua. The vistas around Mapua, looking across the water to the mountains, were sublime. The countryside of gentle fertile hills, is dotted with wonderful galleries, wineries and historical points of interest. A highlight was our visit to the timber toys gallery and shop. The cycling is very doable for all levels of riders and the bikes are second to none. And to top it off, Chris picks you up wherever you decide to finish your ride. We ended at the Somerset Farm Historic Cottage and had the most comfortable and chatty trip back to our accomodation. Thank you Chris and Gentle Cycling Company for a most magnificent day.Written 27 February 2024

- Nick S0 contributionsBikes Beers and great fun!A great day out! We talked to Bernie about the ride before booking and she was really helpful explaining the type of bikes and terrain. Spent a bit more time next to busy roads than we'd have liked, but overall a great experience. The bikes were well maintained and good quality Bernie and her team were great.Written 9 February 2024

- Cozzo000 contributionsWatch out for the headwinds!Very helpful. Good setup. Everything went well on our trip from Tahahunui to Mapua. Couldn’t blame them for the strong headwind all the way or us getting lost in Richmond. Maps aren’t great so have your own and plan your stops. Takes longer than you think and worth. Getting the earlier ferry to Mapua.Written 22 January 2024

We were extra lucky as we got a perfect weather day, which made this really special. Chris picked us up from our accommodation, supplied us with good, easy to use e-bikes, talked us through the route and gave us paper and electronic mapping, as well as recommending food and drink stops along the way.
The trail is mostly beautiful, running along the coast - in one section it is alongside a main road in a more built up area, but on a distinct cycle path - and the loop of Rabbit Island is particularly lovely, with the chance to stop along a huge sandy beach.
We did the winery tasting (the tasting is pretty brief, the best bit was also having lunch in the garden restaurant), as well as stopping at the Grape Escape café (more sitting in the sun, beautiful garden) and the Eddyline Brewery.
We had such a enjoyable day we overshot our timing - our full distance was over 60k, with several stops - but Chris was unfazed and simply arranged to pick up the bikes from us the following morning.
Excellent day, really well put together.

The e-bike made the ride a breeze. The views along the trail was amazing. The wine tastings were great. Chris and Bernie are such lovely couple who made sure we know what to do and where to go to make the best of our experience. Thanks 😊

Kia ora,
Thanks so much for your kind review. The wine tour is our most popular tour, and as you said, the e-bike makes it easy to enjoy the coastline to Seifried's winery.
Thank you for choosing to cycle with us!
Very best wishes,
Bernie and Chris

Family of 8 and we had the best time! Chris gave us amazing tour map and we had such a great day, we rented the E-Bikes which were definitely worth it and enjoyed the beautiful vineyards. There was something for everyone and was so easy to communicate with Chris pick up and drop off points. We will definitely be back for another tour next time we are in Nelson! Loved it!

Beautiful and fun easy ride around the estuary. It's a good way to see plenty of sea birds. and Bernie were helpful and knowledgeable.
The wine tasting was a little perfunctory but we enjoyed it, and had an excellent lunch at the winery.

Note - TA did not give the correct option to select - we did the self guided e-bike but we did not have the Gentle Cycling Company set anything up for us.
We decided to just rent the e-bikes and go it on our own with regards to wineries etc. We booked a table for lunch at Seifried winery and before we went there, we rode out to the beach at Rabbit Island - we didn't stay long, just a quick look and then did a bit of back tracking to Seifried. We had a nice wine tasting and lunch there. My husband had the muscles and really enjoyed them, and I had the chicken sandwich and thought it was okay. After lunch we cycled to Te Mania for another wine tasting. Another nice tasting although they were very busy and it took a bit of time. We were told that there was an excellent place to taste/buy cheese just another 500 M down the road but we didn't do that.
In total we rode about 50K and using e-bikes was excellent as a more relaxing option, no sweat involved :-). The Great Taste Trail was fun and beautiful.
I am a cyclist and had never tried an e-bike but for this type of thing (meaning I'm not looking for a workout), I absolutely loved it.
The company was easy to work with and efficient. They told us that when they open at 9 AM they get a big rush, so we held off and showed up a bit before 10

We were looked after so well from the moment we booked to the end of the ride.
No stone left unturned. We all agreed that the cost was very reasonable considering the standard of the e-bikes.
