Magic sperm whales spotted from above
This was an all-around wonderful and magical experience! The location, the briefing, the pilot, the plane and ultimately the two sperm whales and three pods of pilot whales made our afternoon magical! Definitely a must, when travelling through Kaikoura and fancy of spotting these fantastic gigantic sea animals from a different angle.

A great flight experience in Kaikoura
Our experience from booking to flight was very prodessional, informed and friendly. All the safety briefings and details of what we would see were conducted in a pleasant way Our pilot was owner, Murray, who had a lovely manner and flew the aircraft in a way to maximise our viewing experience. All in all, a fantastic and informative way to see all that this wonderful are has to offer. also, cost effective and a wonderful way to interact with the fun people of Kaikoura. Thanks to Murray and his excellent team. Catherine and David Campbell, Scotland

      Great professional company
This flight was recommended by friends who did it a few days earlier and loved it. It was a great recommendation. The staff were friendly and professional from start to finish. The pilot went out of his way to spot whales for us but it wasn’t to be. However, we saw loads of dolphins and a few seals and amazing views of the coast from the air.

      Scenic flight
Jake was very welcoming...we were lucky enough to get our own private flight in a Cessna as were the only 2 booked on the morning flight. It was terrific, the views were incredible and Jake gave a great commentary. We even saw a whale briefly as we moved up the coastal road before flying near to the snow capped peaks. It was worth every penny. I booked using the winter offer, combining the flight with a whale watch boat tour. Great value at $165 for both.

      Incredible views, helpful staff
Staff were super helpful. We booked the scenic flight thinking it was a whale watching flight, however, the staff were able to catch a view of whales over the pennisula for us. It was an incredible experience. Kaikoura is stunning. Would highly reccomend.

      Wonderful Experience- Sperm whale sighting
We loved this experience! We had an amazing view of a Sperm Whale, who stayed on the surface for 10 minutes before diving below the surface. Lots of dolphins hanging about too and stunning views of the local landscape. Our pilot was friendly and knowledgeable, we'd definitely recommend this trip.

We were so lucky to actually see three sperm whales, a large pod of dolphins, some seals and a flock of albatross, it was fabulous. Would definitely recommend.

The AirKaikoura 40 minute whale watching flight was excellent from start to finish, and the cost was no more than the local whale watching boat trip!

What a wonderful experience it was to see the majestic sperm whale breathing on the surface, then diving to hunt giant squid in the depths of the Kaikoura trench. The pilot spotted the whales and circled before dropping down for a closer look. It was thrilling but we also felt safe. It was amazing to see so many dusky dolphins in densely packed pods for protection from predators during calving.

The safety briefing information about the marine mammals & geology of the area was most informative, and the commentary during the flight was good too.

It was an experience I shall remember for a long time.

We were lucky enough to get a stunning day for a Whale Watch flight, and on the 9am flight managed to beat the days forecast wind. Personnel were very professional, the plane was well looked after (windows were being polished when we arrived). Seats were well aligned to windows so everyone had a good view. The pilot was great, and very good at spotting whales, also considerate to how passengers were feeling as tight turns around whales can induce a bit of motion sickness. We were lucky enough to see some blue whales, incredible to be able to see the full creature beneath the surface. I felt sorry for people on the whale watch boat below, who would try their best to get near the whales but the whales would dive before they could get very near. Very good value trip, and I would unhesitatingly recommend them. Thank you for an amazing experience.

Air Kaikoura Whale Watching Flight was an amazing experience and well worth the money, especially if you can get a discounted deal. Our pilot Alex was a very good guide and we did get to see a Sperm whale. The pre flight talk about whales and dolphins was also very interesting.

This experience was very special, once in a lifetime. We had such an amazing time, we got off the plane and immediately both said shall we do it again tomorrow. So pleased we did, we saw a blue whale and pilot whales on our first flight, really amazing moments. You get a good view of them from above and our pilot Murray was exceptional, really knew his stuff and good eyes! The flight was very smooth, be aware when you spot a whale you may go round in circles to stay in the same spot but we loved it. The second time we saw sperm whales and really pleased as they are the resident whale in Kaikoura. Also saw a massive pod of dolphins. This team obviously really care about what they do and I would 100% recommend it to anyone. It’s a memory me and my husband will never forget.

I had a flight booked for 9AM but sadly there was too much fog to fly out. The Agency rebooked me for later in the day. The Pilot really rushed us into the plane to see a whale and we got to see a sperm whale! It was an incredible experience and I would do it again. We saw a lot of dolphins and amazing views of Kaikoura!

Spectacular day in the sky. The weather and overall scenery were stunning! Spotted 2x blue whales, 2x humpback whales, the odd seal and various birds. The pilot did his best to ensure all passengers had a chance to see the whales. It's worth being flexible for this experience as my flight was booked for 10am however I was asked if I could hold out until 11am as that's when the whale watching boats would be out and we'll have more of a chance to know where the whales are then (due to the boats having the benefit of sonar equipment). It was great to hear the planes and boats communicating with each other over the radio - all working together to ensure the best day was had by all.

The view from the plane was fantastic. We saw a pod of 100+ dusky dolphins playing, jumping and spinning through the water. It was awesome. Next we saw a few Orcas lazing around on top of the water. The pilot gave an excellent commentary as we flew around the area. Also found out Orcas are not "killer whales" but a large dolphin. Very good, highly recommend.

Hugely disappointed!! Catamaran cancelled as sea swell too high. Half an hour before we were due to start trip. . The sea actually looked incredibly calm couldn’t even see a break of a wave.
We were offered a full refund or a flight on a light aircraft instead to see them. As we’d travelled from Christchurch, and didn’t have another day to try the trip, we decided to go ahead. I asked if the aircraft would get close enough to actually seeing any Whales. Assured pilots from Air Kaikōura very experienced, so not to worry.
Unfortunately, this is not the case, although the pilot did manage to spot sperm, whales and A blue whale plus a group of dolphins. It was impossible to even identify them at all. Really would not recommend the light aircraft, as it really can’t get close enough to the Whaled to see anything much, as you will see from the photographs.
The tour guide was absolutely brilliant though .

7 seater plane gave everyone a window seat. Our pilot found a sperm whale surfacing 15 minutes into the flight. He made sure both sides of the plane had great views while the whale surfaced and then dove. Afterwards there was time to see the seabirds feeding and the dusky dolphins playing.

Excellent service. The flight was significantly delayed but this was due to a sperm whale being sited on the previous flight which the pilot spent time showing his passengers. We then had our flight delayed a little longer to give the whale time to dive and resurface before we went out to give us chance to see it. This worked and we had a good sighting of a male sperm whale. We also saw a huge school of dusky dolphins chasing a shoal of fish. The pilot was excellent and very interactive with the passengers, ensuring everyone was alright and giving everyone plenty of opportunity to watch the whale. Can’t recommend highly enough. If you get chance to whale watch by air, go for it.
