Everything about this trip was brilliant 👏
Really enjoyed this trip, everything was well organised, from the booking, check in, the coach trip to the catamaran terminal. The day we were on the trip, they had advised there was a high risk of sea sickness due to the high winds/choppy water so at least you could prepare by taking medication in advance of the sailing. The staff were entertaining, engaging and really made the trip by providing advise if you were feeling unwell etc as to where the best seating would be and things to try. Very informative as to the whales seen in the area, lifespan, migration habits and the whales they had come to know. We were lucky enough to spot a sperm whale, who was at the surface long enough for everyone on the vessel to see. We subsequently found out the whale's name is Rangatira, a male, well known to them from the nicks/ shape of the tale. It really couldn't have been any better the staff really made this!

      Close up with sperm whale
All touch points with the organization were first class. The VIP package made even more special and comfortable. Our guide was super enthusiastic and helpful.

      Keep believing
This was a great experience and privilege to see a great creature of the deep in real life. The boat was top class for what it was doing. The disappointing part was the long delay in getting us from check in to the pier 10am to 11am - really unnecessary delay, no explanation or apology. The on board staff were fantastic and only for the desire of the experience we would have walked away - so in essence the organisers know you are adaptive audience and will put up with poor service because of why you are there. Great experience - pity about the organisation.

      Disappointed we missed out going
We went into the office, after checking out of our motel hoping to do the trip. We had to be back in ChCh by a certain time, so asked if we could pay, but drive to South Bay instead of taking the courtesy coach so that after the boat trip we could drive south from there. (we had parking available around the corner at a friends home). The lady behind the counter was very abrupt and said no, there is no parking at South Bay, which is not entirely correct. So sorry team, but you missed out 2 people booking tickets.

      Canceled due to weather
Unfortunately our tour was canceled due to the weather. The staff were friendly and getting a full refund because we were unable to rebook on another tour was easy and seamless. My only comment is that a text advisory or smartphone app that sends a notification that lets you know of the cancelation would be useful so you don’t have to turn up to be told it’s cancelled

      A Kaikoura must do
Very well organised tour. Ran smoothly and to time. We were briefed that it was going to be a little rough and offered the option of pulling out of the tour. Luckily for us sea sickness is not an issue. The entire crew were friendly and full of knowledge and happy to share. We saw lots of bird life, seals , hector dolphins and best of all 2 whales. Had a fabulous morning and an experience to remember.

      Well worth the money
We went out for a Whale watching trip with this company and were thoroughly impressed. The attention to detail was brilliant. There was a safety presentation to start before we headed off on a bus to the boat. Attention was given to those with children and people who might be seasick and advice on how to stop sea sickness which was very useful, I’d not heard advice given before and I’m sure that it helped people enjoy the trip more. The boat ride itself was fun with us crashing through the waves at high speed to the spot where we might find whales. We were lucky enough to see two Sperm whales and to watch them dive. We also saw Dolphins and Albatross which was a bonus. We were told about the species of whales and the reason there were so many whales in the area all year round. The young man who gave the commentary was very interesting and was happy to answer questions. At the end of the trip he gave a lovely speech about how we all represented our own country while visiting New Zealand and that we should leave it as we found it, it was quite a moving end to a great trip. Thank you for a fab day

      Whale Watching Tour
My wife and I decided to try our luck with catching a glimpse of nature’s biggest mammal and it didn’t disappoint. We picked the 8.45am slot (midday and early afternoon already booked up) and sailed out the bay in search, we were warned before hand that it was choppy so took some tablets to counter it - that didn’t work! We were sick as dogs for most of the trip. However, the treatment by the staff was second to none, and we weren’t alone being sick! I’d say half the boat was. So, if your going and they warn you, heed the advice. The trip it’s self was awesome, highly factual and we got to see many animals on the tour. It took us 3 attempts to locate a whale but we finally did and was blessed with witnessing a sperm whale sat on the surface. Despite the sickness it was well worth it and I’d do it again for sure, just not on a choppy day!

      Amazing
Was warned of sickness warning with rough seas that morning but was fine. Took a while to find a whale but luckily got to see one right at the end. Comfortable seating inside the boat and plenty of room outside.

      So much wildlife!
We may have been lucky but we had a fantastic experience with Whale Watch Kaikoura and saw 2 sperm whales, a pod of Hector dolphins with two babies, albatrosses, seals, and a blue shark! We didn’t want to leave!! As others have said - the sea is choppy so do take sea sickness tablets. We are prone to sea sickness and took medication prior to departure and fortunately felt fine and really enjoyed the experience. Crew were very knowledgeable, especially Jack who did most of the presenting.

Best crew we could ever wish for!!!
This really was an incredible adventure! We knew the sea would be rough (28th Dec 4pm sailing) so we had taken medicine before we set off and thank goodness we did because then we could actually enjoy the trip! Our kids (aged 8) were called the ‘VIP’s’ on the boat by the crew! They were always making sure they felt ok and checking that they could see the whales! We really really appreciated the care they showed them and all the passengers!! We got to see 3 different whales and a fantastic whales tail! Our commentator for the cruise (I can’t remember his name but he had a whale tattoo on his leg and own a real whale tooth which he let our kids hold!) was absolutely brilliant- so many cool facts and identified all the whales for us. The captain, spotter and all the deck crew were fantastic too! Huge thanks for such an incredible adventure even in the rough seas!

Great once out on the water!
This is the 2nd time I’ve been lucky enough to go whale watching In Kaikoura and returned wanting my husband to hopefully experience this amazing trip. Unfortunately our early morning boat was cancelled due to rough sea conditions as we were at the counter to check in. Obviously we were both incredibly disappointed but both of us understand that safety is paramount and this is Mother Nature and thus no ones fault. However, there was not an ounce of empathy or understanding shown to us or any other customer that I witnessed as they were told there trip had been cancelled. The staff attitude was very matter of fact and at the point of arrogant during some interactions I witnessed. I appreciate they deal with the public day in day out and have to cancel many tours but they need to remember for many this is a once in a life time opportunity. Maybe it was a lack of maturity over blatant disregard but I was honestly taken aback at their attitude as this is the opposite of my experience with all other tour operators and the people in general In NZ. We asked about options and were told about a plane option or ‘waiting list’ which involved us either hanging around or returning for the later boats to see if they would sail. If there were no shows we could take their place (in the que with anyone else on the waiting list). We were very close to getting our refund and leaving as we both felt so disheartened and frustrated at the way we had been treated but decided to hang on and see if the next boat left. Everything from this point was great. The next boat went out on a rough sea warning (no young children, reduced mobility, pregnant) and we and many other waiting list got a seat. The sea was abit rough but my husband and I were not sea sick (a few passengers were) we had 3 sightings of sperm whales which was great. The boat crew were informative, friendly and genuinely seemed to care about passengers having a positive experience. Our tour guy Hadlee deserves a special mention as he was super! A great day overall but tarnished by staff attitude we experienced initially.

Cancelled Trip & No Alternative Offered
Booked whale watch quite a way in advance. Unfortunately on the morning of our visit the weather meant it was cancelled. That isn't their fault and we were refunded straight away. A bit later went back to the gift shop and I heard a couple being offered a flight in lieu of the cancelled trip at the same cost. I queried why I hadn't been offered this and the response was you should've been but sorry the Lady who served you is new. By that time we couldn't sort a flight and therefore double disappointment for the kids. It's good there is this option but it should be offered to everyone.

Watch the Leviathan in a ver respecful way
Awesome spot in this Planet to meet sperm whales in a very respecful way. 4 boats operating, 3 at the same time, always keeping a safer distance to the sperm whales to breath and then dive. Excellent class onboard by local guides. If you feel sea scikness and have time in your visit, postpone your tour in 2-3 days. It's worthwhile to visit the spot in better sea state.

This was a pretty impersonal experience.

I will say it was amazing to see two sperm whales and dusky dolphins for a birthday trip. The boat was comfortable, beautiful, and clean. The location itself is absolutely stunning.

Clearly this company takes out many people and this is the end of the main season- which I understand. The front desk was in a rush and not particularly.... well down to earth. It was strange that they had a safety video you watched before the bus ride to the boat and then they repeated the exact same thing onboard. Jokes from the crew fell flat and even at one point an insensitive joke about body weight was made. The captain was lovely and probably the most friendly of the crew- with a great job navigating around the sperm whales. One seasick woman was lying down in the back of the boat crying and miserable.... I’d like to have seen her take some ginger, have an eye on the shore, and be near the engine... although most of us were perfectly happy :)

Overall I am glad we went, but I wouldn’t recommend this company to my friends. There are smaller, cheaper, more personal tours elsewhere.

No whales sited at sea, but after they were radioed about a whale next to the marina, they pretended they couldn't see it (despite the passengers all pointing at it), refused to let us look at it despite it only being a short distance away, our time was up. They chose to refund an entire boat load of passengers 80%, rather than be late. Zero financial sense there, especially when the following cruises would be spared whale searching time, it was right in the bay. Can't fathom the logic, hope the owners are happy with money being unnecessarily refunded.

The reception on arriving is dreadful and chaotic. We joined a queue for tickets though not sure if this was the right thing. We cram ourselves in amongst the people browsing the gift shop and those who our trying to queue bumped and nudged by other bystanders. Then someone shouts not to queue now if you're booked on the 10.30 trip which we were. More shuffling around. Eventually we get the tickets, then told to go to the briefing room. Yet another airless cramped space where we wait for half an hour for the briefing which is basically a safety video about donning lifejackets etc. Eventually we are boarding the bus to take us to the boat which is on the other side of town.

The onboard experience is better, the boat crew are are competent, attentive and in good humour. it took a while to find a whale but the crew have the gismos to locate one. That's when all hell breaks loose.

Suddenly there are two other vessels from the same company bearing down on the location, plus a helicopter, plus a light plane. With all the noise from the aircraft it's impossible to have a conversation or appreciate the moment..

Rules state that there should be no more than three vessels, inc. aircraft within 300 meters of the whale. It's difficult to judge distance but I think the aircraft breeched that. As far as I could see Whale Watch adhered to the rules, though taking it to the wire at times. I wonder if the pressure to deliver a sighting is too great. The boat operators of course are not responsible for the aircraft but they presumably have to co-operate with them.

I felt sad for the solitary whale. The noise and commotion must have an impact. Whale Watch states that some of the money received goes towards marine research. I hope that it is a meaningful contribution as otherwise I can see no upside in these whale watching operations whether by boat or air.

Returning to the marina after not spotting any whales we hear the office radio the skipper to tell him there was a humpback whale right in the bay where we were heading. However our skipper chose not to take 5 minutes to see a humpback 200 to 300 metres away, instead returning us to the Dock despite us asking to see the whale. As we docked we again heard the lady on the radio saying the whale was right there had they taken us, the volume got turned down abrubtly. Our family on shore had been standing with our bus driver who told them she had radioed the ship. Our captain couldn't spare 5 minutes to let us see a whale, instead choosing to refund the entire groups 80% fee. Why?? Making the next sailing a few minutes late wouldn't have mattered as they didn't need to go way out to sea, the whale was 5 minutes from the marina, so time would have been saved. The irony is that everyone on shore, other fishing boats and recreational vessels all got to see the whale, everyone saw the whale except the boat load of people who had paid to see a whale. Disgusted, and does not make financial sense to refund when a whale was right there, all for the sake of a few minutes.

P.s. They pretended they couldn't see it, despite us all being able to see it, and unfortunately for them we had already overheard the conversation and knew that they knew, so couldn't even be honest.

Our tour was initially cancelled due to the winds that had come in causing very rough seas, so we booked back on for the first trip of the next morning, which was still advised of high sea sickness levels. It was very choppy out still & because we were the first trip out we didn’t know where the whales would be located.
Within the first 25minutes we made a couple of stops and a little echo locator was popped in the water to help us at least work out the direction of any whales. With help from the other companies a sperm whale was found, we only just made it there in time to see him give his tail a flick as he went for his deep dive.
After some more checks we were lucky enough to have a 2nd whale in the area and managed to spend a good 10minutes watching him swim around before taking his deep dive.
Lucy was on the commentary and she was fantastic, really factual and interesting but also stopping commentary to let us what the whale in peace.
Given we knew neither whale would be up any time soon our tour took us over to find the pod of dolphins that were playing off shore.
    Awesome trip all around.

We did not see whales. Completely understand the concept of Mother Nature, and there are no guarantees , however we felt the ‘oh well times up, tough, we did our best’ mentality was a bit much, as others have commented on.

Also, anecdotally, I really challenge the ‘96% success but boo hoo you are in the 4%’ ...... I suspect you the company will need to review the 96% statistic’s accuracy based on talking to others, or at least break it down by season.
Our captain did a great show of coming down from her post, listening to the whales and going back up, at one stage joking about our tense faces on the way ..... to be honest, it’s no joking matter when 100 people have been bounced around for 3 hours on for many their only day in kaikoura, told to stand up and sit down and there’s a 96% chance of seeing a whale, but oh well time it up.
Also, staff receiving messages on their radios constantly and talking amongst themselves about what is actually happening certainly didn’t build confidence in the honestly and integrity of the experience.
I challenge you whale watch kaikoura not to respond to me with the same copy and paste PR line that you have given in response to countless others.
You are going to need to think differently to continue to flourish as a business in these changing times . Cheers

We booked this tour a few hours before it was to depart and had zero expectations of seeing any wildlife but, how were we wrong!

Easy check-in process with modern comfortable transportation for all ages. We had a great Captain and crew that gave clear instructions and commentary throughout the duration of the tour.

There were a few attempts to track down a Sperm Whale and it was cool to see the process and tools the crew and captain used to find them. Once we did find one and it was easy to understand the process and when to take the best pictures with guidance from the crew over the microphone. After that, we followed a pod of dolphins and was surprised to find a Hump Back whale that breached the water and gave everyone on board a spectacular show. It was such a thrill and we appreciate that we were able to stay out for the entire 2 hours. We found that we got the best views upstairs but it was more personal on the lower deck as you were closer to the wildlife.

Hands down, most memorable experience we have encountered and it was an highlight of our South Island trip. Would highly recommend local tours like Whale Watch Kaikoura and understand that not every tour is the same. We were very lucky and blessed to have had this experience and wish all future tours the very best!

Was on the whale watching trip this morning and was very disappointed. We didn’t see any whales while out at sea, which is unlucky, but with wild animals I understand there are no guarantees. But we overheard the captain being told over the radio there was a humpback whale in the bay. Sure enough as we were sailing into the bay to dock we saw a humpback whale leaping out of the water in the distance, with a few other boats watching close by. We pointed the whale out to the skipper and asked if we would be going over to look, and he just pretended he couldn’t see it. We then docked and sure enough everyone was gathered on shore watching the humpback whale! The icing on the cake was when someone radioed the captain again to say the whale was still there and had our boat been over to look. No explanation for why we couldn’t go over to see the humpback whale, they simply pretended it wasn’t there. I suspect that because there was another tour afterwards they just didn’t want to take us over as it would have made the next tour a few minutes late- instead they refunded us all 80%, however I think we would all have rather gone over to watch the whale for even a few minutes. Surely it would be better for their business to run a few minutes late rather than refunding most of the money???

Kia Ora Thank you for taking the time to submit a review after your experience with us. Feedback, positive or negative, from our customers is important and taken very seriously as we continually strive to improve the level of service and the quality of experience we deliver. Every effort is made to deliver a quality tour and experience at all times. We are sorry to hear that you were not able to see a whale on your tour. Due to us running multiple tours a day, we need to adhere to a strict time schedule and sometimes this means that we run out of time to find a whale. I have passed your feedback on to our management team for further review. We hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in Kaikoura.

High seas forced the boat cancellation and we were offered a 30 minute substitute airplane ride with “Wings over Whales” (same price).
Saw 55+ foot SPERM Whale and over 100 hector dolphins. And just spectacular scenery over the coast line!
Great pilot Mike - very smooth take off and landing in the higher winds off the seas.

We took the 7:45 tour and ended up seeing 2 whales, albatross, hundreds of dolphins, and even some seals. It was really incredible. The crew was amazingly knowledgeable and we learned so much along the way. The boat was very nice and well maintained—you can tell they’ve put a lot into safety, comfort, and functionality. We were so impressed with the crew’s efforts to find whales for us to view, and with everything else they did to make our time enjoyable. This was a top highlight of our entire NZ trip and I would highly recommend to anyone / any age.
