Everything about this trip was brilliant 👏
Really enjoyed this trip, everything was well organised, from the booking, check in, the coach trip to the catamaran terminal. The day we were on the trip, they had advised there was a high risk of sea sickness due to the high winds/choppy water so at least you could prepare by taking medication in advance of the sailing. The staff were entertaining, engaging and really made the trip by providing advise if you were feeling unwell etc as to where the best seating would be and things to try. Very informative as to the whales seen in the area, lifespan, migration habits and the whales they had come to know. We were lucky enough to spot a sperm whale, who was at the surface long enough for everyone on the vessel to see. We subsequently found out the whale's name is Rangatira, a male, well known to them from the nicks/ shape of the tale. It really couldn't have been any better the staff really made this!

      Close up with sperm whale
All touch points with the organization were first class. The VIP package made even more special and comfortable. Our guide was super enthusiastic and helpful.

      Keep believing
This was a great experience and privilege to see a great creature of the deep in real life. The boat was top class for what it was doing. The disappointing part was the long delay in getting us from check in to the pier 10am to 11am - really unnecessary delay, no explanation or apology. The on board staff were fantastic and only for the desire of the experience we would have walked away - so in essence the organisers know you are adaptive audience and will put up with poor service because of why you are there. Great experience - pity about the organisation.

      Disappointed we missed out going
We went into the office, after checking out of our motel hoping to do the trip. We had to be back in ChCh by a certain time, so asked if we could pay, but drive to South Bay instead of taking the courtesy coach so that after the boat trip we could drive south from there. (we had parking available around the corner at a friends home). The lady behind the counter was very abrupt and said no, there is no parking at South Bay, which is not entirely correct. So sorry team, but you missed out 2 people booking tickets.

      Canceled due to weather
Unfortunately our tour was canceled due to the weather. The staff were friendly and getting a full refund because we were unable to rebook on another tour was easy and seamless. My only comment is that a text advisory or smartphone app that sends a notification that lets you know of the cancelation would be useful so you don’t have to turn up to be told it’s cancelled

      A Kaikoura must do
Very well organised tour. Ran smoothly and to time. We were briefed that it was going to be a little rough and offered the option of pulling out of the tour. Luckily for us sea sickness is not an issue. The entire crew were friendly and full of knowledge and happy to share. We saw lots of bird life, seals , hector dolphins and best of all 2 whales. Had a fabulous morning and an experience to remember.

      Well worth the money
We went out for a Whale watching trip with this company and were thoroughly impressed. The attention to detail was brilliant. There was a safety presentation to start before we headed off on a bus to the boat. Attention was given to those with children and people who might be seasick and advice on how to stop sea sickness which was very useful, I’d not heard advice given before and I’m sure that it helped people enjoy the trip more. The boat ride itself was fun with us crashing through the waves at high speed to the spot where we might find whales. We were lucky enough to see two Sperm whales and to watch them dive. We also saw Dolphins and Albatross which was a bonus. We were told about the species of whales and the reason there were so many whales in the area all year round. The young man who gave the commentary was very interesting and was happy to answer questions. At the end of the trip he gave a lovely speech about how we all represented our own country while visiting New Zealand and that we should leave it as we found it, it was quite a moving end to a great trip. Thank you for a fab day

      Whale Watching Tour
My wife and I decided to try our luck with catching a glimpse of nature’s biggest mammal and it didn’t disappoint. We picked the 8.45am slot (midday and early afternoon already booked up) and sailed out the bay in search, we were warned before hand that it was choppy so took some tablets to counter it - that didn’t work! We were sick as dogs for most of the trip. However, the treatment by the staff was second to none, and we weren’t alone being sick! I’d say half the boat was. So, if your going and they warn you, heed the advice. The trip it’s self was awesome, highly factual and we got to see many animals on the tour. It took us 3 attempts to locate a whale but we finally did and was blessed with witnessing a sperm whale sat on the surface. Despite the sickness it was well worth it and I’d do it again for sure, just not on a choppy day!

      Amazing
Was warned of sickness warning with rough seas that morning but was fine. Took a while to find a whale but luckily got to see one right at the end. Comfortable seating inside the boat and plenty of room outside.

      So much wildlife!
We may have been lucky but we had a fantastic experience with Whale Watch Kaikoura and saw 2 sperm whales, a pod of Hector dolphins with two babies, albatrosses, seals, and a blue shark! We didn’t want to leave!! As others have said - the sea is choppy so do take sea sickness tablets. We are prone to sea sickness and took medication prior to departure and fortunately felt fine and really enjoyed the experience. Crew were very knowledgeable, especially Jack who did most of the presenting.

Best crew we could ever wish for!!!
This really was an incredible adventure! We knew the sea would be rough (28th Dec 4pm sailing) so we had taken medicine before we set off and thank goodness we did because then we could actually enjoy the trip! Our kids (aged 8) were called the ‘VIP’s’ on the boat by the crew! They were always making sure they felt ok and checking that they could see the whales! We really really appreciated the care they showed them and all the passengers!! We got to see 3 different whales and a fantastic whales tail! Our commentator for the cruise (I can’t remember his name but he had a whale tattoo on his leg and own a real whale tooth which he let our kids hold!) was absolutely brilliant- so many cool facts and identified all the whales for us. The captain, spotter and all the deck crew were fantastic too! Huge thanks for such an incredible adventure even in the rough seas!

Great once out on the water!
This is the 2nd time I’ve been lucky enough to go whale watching In Kaikoura and returned wanting my husband to hopefully experience this amazing trip. Unfortunately our early morning boat was cancelled due to rough sea conditions as we were at the counter to check in. Obviously we were both incredibly disappointed but both of us understand that safety is paramount and this is Mother Nature and thus no ones fault. However, there was not an ounce of empathy or understanding shown to us or any other customer that I witnessed as they were told there trip had been cancelled. The staff attitude was very matter of fact and at the point of arrogant during some interactions I witnessed. I appreciate they deal with the public day in day out and have to cancel many tours but they need to remember for many this is a once in a life time opportunity. Maybe it was a lack of maturity over blatant disregard but I was honestly taken aback at their attitude as this is the opposite of my experience with all other tour operators and the people in general In NZ. We asked about options and were told about a plane option or ‘waiting list’ which involved us either hanging around or returning for the later boats to see if they would sail. If there were no shows we could take their place (in the que with anyone else on the waiting list). We were very close to getting our refund and leaving as we both felt so disheartened and frustrated at the way we had been treated but decided to hang on and see if the next boat left. Everything from this point was great. The next boat went out on a rough sea warning (no young children, reduced mobility, pregnant) and we and many other waiting list got a seat. The sea was abit rough but my husband and I were not sea sick (a few passengers were) we had 3 sightings of sperm whales which was great. The boat crew were informative, friendly and genuinely seemed to care about passengers having a positive experience. Our tour guy Hadlee deserves a special mention as he was super! A great day overall but tarnished by staff attitude we experienced initially.

Cancelled Trip & No Alternative Offered
Booked whale watch quite a way in advance. Unfortunately on the morning of our visit the weather meant it was cancelled. That isn't their fault and we were refunded straight away. A bit later went back to the gift shop and I heard a couple being offered a flight in lieu of the cancelled trip at the same cost. I queried why I hadn't been offered this and the response was you should've been but sorry the Lady who served you is new. By that time we couldn't sort a flight and therefore double disappointment for the kids. It's good there is this option but it should be offered to everyone.

Watch the Leviathan in a ver respecful way
Awesome spot in this Planet to meet sperm whales in a very respecful way. 4 boats operating, 3 at the same time, always keeping a safer distance to the sperm whales to breath and then dive. Excellent class onboard by local guides. If you feel sea scikness and have time in your visit, postpone your tour in 2-3 days. It's worthwhile to visit the spot in better sea state.

On a recent three week road trip down south, we decided to do a Whale Watch tour while staying in Kaikoura. We booked a few days in advance, and decided to pay the extra $$ and upgrade to the Captain’s Cabin fare.

From start to finish our experience was absolutely wonderful. We booked online, which was very easy to do.

We arrived at the Railway Station (where the booking office is, and where the tours depart from) shortly before the 10am checkin time. The staff at the booking desk were very helpful, and advised they were still waiting to hear from the Captain to confirm the tour was going. There was a bit of a swell. After a few minutes the gentleman on the desk came back and said he’d spoken with the Captain, and the tour was definitely going ahead. He gave us our boarding passes and told us there would be an announcement, and that as VIP Captain’s Cabin guests we would have a special van to take us from the booking office to the boat.

Soon after the announcement came for us to meet the van at the ramp and along came the lovely Terry, our friendly van driver. She was a delight, and on the ten minute (or probably a bit less) trip to the boat at the jetty, we had a lovely conversation.

Terry dropped us very close to the boat, and there were other staff to show us where to go and assist us onboard if needed.

I’m not too good on my pins and stairs can be a bit of an issue, but there were good handrails and I took my time up the single flight of stairs and got to the Captain’s cabin very easily.

There were only four of us in the cabin, which seats 12 (plus the Captain and our hostess). The seats are very comfortable airline-type seats, and we could sit wherever we wished as there was only one other couple in the cabin.

There was a bit of a swell and we had to remain seated when the boat was moving, but when the Captain turned the engines off when some wildlife was sighted, it was more smooth.

We saw albatross, dolphins and a humpback whale who came really close to the boat as if to say “hello”. We could hear him breathing and see the spout as he breathed out. Amazing.

All the staff were great, Terry in the van, Sara our lovely Captain’s Cabin hostess, Fiona on the mic giving us all the information and of course not forgetting our Captain Jack. Thank you to everyone for making our day wonderful.

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip, and felt it was worth every cent extra to do the Captain’s Cabin experience. Would highly recommend.

The boat experience was excellent. We had a VIP ticket which gave us access to the upper deck and there were only 7 of us so we were able to look out from all angles of the boat.
The commentary was first class and very knowledgeable and photos were shown of the species talked about.
We saw a whale and were very close to it enabling us to have a great experience.
My reservations of this company weren’t to do with the trip itself as that deserves 5 stars.
On checking in we were told we’d been moved from the 7.15am slot to 3.30pm, despite us booking 3 months in advance. We told her we had booked on the early morning trip for a reason and we wanted that one. She told us we couldn’t have the VIP ticket we had booked as it was full and then she decided we could have a ticket for that area but we couldn’t have the food that goes with it. We accepted that only to find it was all a mistake and we were able to have our tickets (there were only 7 out of 12 seats booked) and our food. By this time the queue was out of the door!
The day after I went to the shop to buy some souvenirs and despite the pens having $3 written on them I was charged $4.90 and told it was a mistake. I was also charged the price of large postcards when they were small.
It’s a shame the back room team aren’t as efficient as the boat crew.

I would definitely recommend this trip, inevitably it's a 'must do' when in NZ, but in common with other contributors, there are provisos. Firstly, just to say up front that Kaikoura is a special place and very much worth the visit. The whale watching is a big boat, full of other passengers who crowd the deck with you to get a view of the whales. They spend up to 45 mins under water and then surface for about 5 minutes, so, there's a lot of time spent hanging around waiting for them to come up. The time is filled by the commentator with a lot of interesting whale and marine info. As the whales dive, everyone on the deck has their cameras out trying to get the 'tale fin' shot..... along with at least one other boat load and a small aircraft buzzing overhead. So, it's great, but fore-warned is best so that you know what to expect. On the day we sailed, we saw three "whale dives". On our way back, we sailed alongside an enormous pod of Dusky Dolphins who were very playful and put on a great show, so in fact this was the highlight for me.

Myself and a friend had booked and paid to go on the 3:15pm boat on Saturday. When we arrived there was an announcement made over a loud speaker to inform us that the trip had been cancelled due to bad weather. Obviously we know nothing about sea conditions, but it was a stunningly calm day and we got the feeling that they just couldn't be bothered to do the last trip of the day!

We queued up to see if we could rebook for the following day, but were told that they were fully booked until Monday (we were only there for the weekend so that wasn't an option). We were then told that our only option was to get a refund which would take 10 working days. I think it's appalling to make us wait 2 weeks for our own money to be refunded?

Luckily we then came across Air Kaikoura who got us on a whale watching flight the next day for CHEAPER than the boat trip had cost us! The staff there were visibly shocked that our boat trip had been cancelled and said that it doesn't sound right, which reinforces our view that they just couldn't be bothered!

If you want to see some whales in Kaikoura, I would highly recommend Air Kaikoura as an alternative to this cowboy set-up.

Despite the 2 metre swell taking its toll (moderate sea sickness was predicted despite the glorious weather!) the ‘team’ delivered on whale watching. A sperm whale finally played ball and strutted its stuff for 10 or more minutes, with a classic tail fin finish. So job done. Throw in a basking seal, and an albatross, and not a bad day overall, despite the relatively steep price $175pp - albeit some of the funds go towards whale conservation and if all else fails there is a refund of 80% if there is no sighting. So a bit of a no brainier, if you can cope with the sea sickness….

We can definitely recommend the whale watching tour if you are in Kaikoura or nearby. Our boat was very comfortable and modern, the speaker who accompanied our tour, very entertaining and the staff generally friendly.
Unfortunately, we had not seen any luck and no whale that day, but plenty of dolphins and albatrosses. Since you get 80% of the ticket price refunded if you don't see a whale on the tour, that was actually half as bad for us. You still got offered something and in the end for a very low price.

Our captain quickly located a sperm whale (Holey Moley) and then a bit later two orcas (Bentley and Jigsaw) that we watched feed for a long time as a small group of dusky dolphins played around them. We paid for the upgrade to the Captain's Cabin, which was definitely worth the extra money as we had a viewing area that was reserved just for us. This made watching the whales much easier as only 5 of us were in our group (the Captain's cabin holds 12 while the regular cabin holds about 70?). In addition, we had more help in spotting the whales plus sodas and lunch. I definitely recommend the upgrade (short people may have real difficulties seeing from the regular viewing area). Finally, bring a camera with a LONG lens. Out of respect for the animals, the boat stays a bit of a distance from them. That means photos are difficult for regular cameras/phones. Still, it was GREAT.

Following advice from another traveller we upgraded to the Captains table, which was definitely worth the extra $50 each, as you get a lot more space in the cabin. Plus you get the top section, sides and front of the boat, with only 12 people to share it with, so loads of room. The company is very experienced and the boat is super fast and steady, so even with 2m swells it was okay.
We saw one whale and then lots of dolphins, we thought it was great, as did everyone else.

I was a bit hesitant to take this trip as I have been on unsuccessful or underwhelming tours in other places, but this trip was the real deal. We spent quite a bit of time near sperm whale Holy Moley while he 'refueled' with oxygen, before seeing two impressive views of his tail when he dived. It was a very special experience.
We also enjoyed being able to see some other wildlife from the boat such as seals, dolphins, albatrosses, mollymawks and petrels. The commentary was excellent – not only educational and interesting, but the guide Eru was entertaining and funny.
We recommend paying the extra for a seat in the Captain’s cabin, as the higher view from inside is good and there is dedicated space at the outside railing.
This whale watching operation runs very well. The refund was prompt when our first attempt was cancelled due to unsuitable weather, and the crew went to some effort to successfully net a random disposable face mask spotted in the ocean. Good to see kaitiakitanga in action.

The truth is that i had very high expectations for this activity. However, the company cancelled the tour because the whales had left the area where they normally operate. In my case, i had planned Kaikoura for a specific day because we had few days left in the area. I understand that the company has no fault or control of the weather or the whales and therefore, in case of these circumstances, decide to cancel the tour, as bad as it may be for me. What made me angry is the following: after cancelling the tour, they offered us all the option of doing a tour along the coast in which, for half the price, you could go out with marine fauna without seeing whales, such as dusky dolphins. After waiting another 45 minutes, they decided to cancel the second tour because they did not have the necessary capacity (we signed up 28 people and they needed 40 people). Kaikoura in theory is a destination specifically designed to see marine wildlife and everyone who visits it goes specifically to do this type of activities. after driving 2 and a half hours from christchurch (5 hours in total counting the return trip), due to the lack of only 12 people we could not go out to do the tour. A bit unfair, isn't it? I don't understand how this company, which in theory is the best in town, does not offer services that adapt to the demand considering that many people do not go to Kaikoura for more than 1 or 2 days. At the very least, they should try to offer some kind of marine experience to those who stop there, since they boast so much about their privileged environment. In short, I think the company should be better prepared to deal with this kind of problems and, for example, reduce the minimum capacity required so that, in the event that whales cannot be seen, people who want to and have made the effort to go to the area can see some kind of wildlife. Despite this, the refund for the cancellation was quick and easy.
