About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Sunshine3076680 contributionsDolphin swim insteadUnfortunately this business is closed. The website says temporarily but most locals think it’s unlikely to reopen after several years and Marine mammal regulations shifting. There is a place I found that’s a snorkeling trip off Stewart Island to the south. I just did two different Hectors dolphin swims in Akaroa instead. Respectful to the dolphins, and amazing!Written 20 February 2023
- katief9170 contributionsThe best!We spent yesterday morning swimming with the seals and enjoyed it immensely! I couldn't have had a better experience with the seals. The tour the were very carefully not to abuse the natural wildlife during the tour and explained the time before we set off (ie keep three meters away etc), except they forgot to tell the seals! These lovely creatures playfully somersault around us, looking us directly in the grave from less than a meter away. I always felt totally safe underway the expert care of Al, who was very helpful and expert.Written 24 September 2022

- KookaburraSydney0 contributionsFirst classThis was a highlight of our New Zealand trip. As three older women with basic snorkeling experience we were very well looked after by the caring and patient staff. The wetsuits did indeed keep us boyant and warm as promised! We were lucky enough to experience swimming with the seals who acted as if we were not even there. Would highly recommend this tour.Written 17 February 2020
- IanS2780 contributionsHighly recommended - top class outfitThis is a top outfit. Online booking and Pre event confirmation was easy and well handled. Equipment was top notch by my book. Everyone we met was really friendly and helpful - everyone couldn’t do enough to make our experience really great. Briefing was thorough, but light hearted, both before leaving base and on the boat. As luck would have it we didn’t get an up close and personal seal experience, but this wasn’t due to a lack of effort - anything but. Despite that we had a great experience, and a good day out.Written 13 February 2020
- Roberta R0 contributionsFantastic ExperienceThis was an amazing experience. We saw multiple seals in the water and one of them got very close to us and even showed off and jumped! The trip was very well organized and I felt safe the entire time. Our guide was extremely attentive and helpful, making sure we got to see the seals in the water. Would recommend this to anyone visiting New Zealand.Written 6 January 2020
- bluessskies0 contributionsamazing seal viewingsthe best experience to swim with seals in their natural, undisturbed habitat. wonderful to get an up close interaction with seals that are wild and uncaged. guides are really friendly, and definitely prioritise safety over everything, ensuring that you stay warm throughout the experience. highly reccomend!!Written 14 December 2019
- Charlene G0 contributionsSealsThe most amazing experience. We went out with a small group of people. I had my two boys with me, 10 and 6. They helped me with the boys, so they could have a memorable time. A once in a lifetime experience, a must thing to do. They are so accommodating and well run business. Loved everything about it. Enjoyed learning about the seals and was happy that my 6 year old could get in the water and swim with them.Written 22 November 2019

A few days before it was scheduled to take place they notified me that condition will most likely not allow the activity to take place. - Germanviking880 contributionsLife changing!!The seal swimming was one of the best things I've done in my life, it totally changed the way I now look at the ocean, it was breathtaking! They where so close and curious😍 And as if that wasn't enough, we met an orca family on our way back (yes i cried) it was so beautiful🐬 and saw a tiny blue pinguen!💙 You never know what the ocean has to offer so it's definitely worth going for it 😉Written 18 March 2019
- Andrewswitzerland0 contributionsFun day outWe had a fun day out with them. Unfortunately we didn’t bring a waterproof camera. We saw seals close up on the rocks as we swam bye and the one or other deal shoot bye in the water. They considered that not to be the usual interaction you get with the seals. Their refund policy is more than fair. We had Anyway a great day out with a super friendly seal crew.Written 7 March 2019
- C1652KGandrewr0 contributionsThe highest standards of seal swimming! We had a great day. We saw one seal who swam with us for a minute or two andsaw lots more on the rocks. The tour operator felt this was not a true experience and refunded us the majority of our payment. There is a 96% success rate in swimming with seals and apparently we were in the 4% that were considered unsuccessful. I believe this company holds itself to a ridiculously high standard. Well done lads!Written 3 March 2019
- LordVelcro0 contributionsBrilliant trip, a real holiday highlightExcellent trip out to see and swim with the Kaikoura seals. Very well organised, good quality wet suits and snorkelling equipment plus a very knowledgeable and professional team running the trip. It was very safe and also very respectful of the seals too, making sure that we shard rather than invaded their space. Swimming and floating alongside those beautiful creatures was one of the highlights of my NZ trip. Thanks very much to really nice family team that run the trips. Very highly recommended.Written 18 February 2019
- Lucy_Slad0 contributionsAmazing experienceI had such a great time on this trip. The company was very well organised, friendly and really worked hard to make sure we got the most out of our time. I really liked the fact that the emphasis was on not disturbing the seals natural behaviour and watching where they go and seeing if they want to come closer. The seals were amazing to watch and being in the water and seeing how they move was breath taking.Written 10 February 2019
- matthewra0 contributionsVery well run tour to swim and sea wild sealsVery well run tour. Short bus ride, short boat ride so not so much seasickness chance. It is very possible to do sunrise dolphins and this tour at noon or later in the day. All real nature tours are weather, conditions and wild animal behavior dependent. They offer a partial refund if they cannot get you a body length from seals int the water. Very nice folks run this. Our first swim - with young seals was mostly a fail, so we went to a mature group near shore and had a long, very engaging experience.Written 9 February 2019

What an incredible afternoon! This was a magical experience during my weeks of traveling around the South Island. The lunchtime tour was cancelled as with the conditions it wasn’t going to be a pleasant experience. Vanessa from Seal Swim was very upfront about persevering with the 2pm swim- that we may get out there and there may not be any seals in the water or we may not be able to see them properly due to the conditions. All 3 of us were still keen to give it a go, and as it turned out there was nothing to worry about.
We swam in two locations and saw numerous seals in the water. They are often curious about these snorkeling humans and had no concerns gliding past us with their beautifully smooth underwater acrobatics. Alistair, our guide, acted as a spotter from the surface and gave us pointers on how best to position ourselves to see the seals. The company was very proactive in advising us what we were not allowed to do to ensure that the seals did not feel harassed or threatened by having us in their environment, and I appreciated their strong stance on this.
This really was a wonderful afternoon and a unique experience I thoroughly enjoyed. I couldn’t stop smiling afterwards!

What an amazing experience! I really recommend this tour to everyone, it's such good value for money and to swim with beautiful, inquisitive fur seals in their natural environment is incredible. The staff were fantastic, the wetsuits and gear clean and in top condition...this is a very professional family-run business. This will be a highlight of any South Island holiday.

Swimming with the seals was an absolute highlight of our South Island trip. We were really impressed with the family run Seal Swim Kaikoura, awesome guides and excellent gear, they were a great help with our 8 year old, highly recommend them! There is complete respect and care for the seals and their environment, and once you’re in the water the seals are confident and curious and will come right up to you. An unforgettable experience!!

This was the absolute highlight of our two week New Zealand tour. I have to admit, I was a bit intimated and nervous ahead of time. I went because my partner wanted to go. But the team are incredibly experienced, having run this as a family business for decades. I felt really well looked after and safe with our guide Matt. I left telling everyone how amazing he was at looking out for everyone’s individual needs. We had a family on our boat with two young kids and I was so impressed at how well he adapted the experience for the youngest of them. And as an asthmatic, Matt was aware of my condition and knew how to look after my needs. Never felt safer! This is a unique and incredible (and dare I say magical) experience that I would recommend to families and people of all ages. Hands down, the best thing we did this summer and an experience I’ll remember for a lifetime.

I took my two grandsons (13&11yrs) on this trip ... we all loved it ! It is such a different experience to be in their environment, they are fast, cheeky, curious and delightful to watch .... so sleek and supple, capable of enviable body movements. The quicker you just learn to relax and float in their environment the closer they come . ... looking directly at you with their huge eyes!Graeme our guide was fantastic at choosing a sheltered spot and letting us know what to do to get the most out of the experience.Having the great quality wet suits was imperative . Overall this dad and daughter team work skillfully together to provide a very memorable experience that we will certainly talk about and share for many years.

It was awesome! Took my girlfriend here for her 21st birthday present and it was a blast. Boat ride to the seals is fun as heck and exhilarating and the swimming was great. Once you get over the initial cold shock you are fine since the wet suits keep you perfectly warm and it's easy to stay buoyant even if you are new to snorkelling like us. The swimming is easy and not tiring.
We saw almost a dozen seals in the water and tons more on the rocks around us. Most of those in the water came within 3m of us and some even brushed against my girlfriend and I. It was incredible and they are super curious and cute.
We also got to see two orca on our boat trip back, which was not planned or expected but awesome.
Highly recommend it you want a fun experience or are planning to do a trip to Kaikoura any time soon.

I can't begin to describe how amazing this experience was. The guides were super friendly and informative, the equipment was great and swimming with the seals was one of the best experiences of my life. You can relax and float around while seals swim right up and interact with you. When you turn away from them they are so playful and interested that they follow. There are hundreds of seals on the rocks surrounding you and I even saw some seal pups. I had gone swimming with the dolphins the day prior and if I were to choose between the two this would be my pick. If you can bring an underwater camera I'd absolutely recommend it because you will want to relive this experience over and over again.

I'd been wanting to go swimming with seals for years so in finally ticking this experience off my list I'm stoked to say that it was all that I had imagined and more.
A combination of perfect weather & water conditions, paired with the super friendly, knowledgable & caring team at Seal Swim Kaikoura (plus of course the NZ Fur Seals themselves) make this one of the best eco-tourism experiences I've tried to date.
A bit of a side note but as the NZ tourism industry reels from the impact of Covid-19 it would seem that this family run eco-tourism business which has been operating for 30+ years will not only survive but thrive through these trying times with the pricing of the seal swim experience very affordable for both Kiwi's and International tourists alike.
The gold star is that all this awesome is achieved whilst fully living the Tiaki Promise ; )
In summary Seal Swim Kaikoura scoring 10/10 for a totally immersive nature based experience that is true value for money!

This experience really is a must do while in Kaikoura. To come face to face with NZ fur seals in their environment was completely magical. The team at Seal Swim Kaikoura, were friendly, welcoming and passionate about the local wildlife and environment. The gear was excellent and kept us cosy in the water and Allister made us feel safe at all times. The kids had an absolute blast.

This was a first rate experience from start to finish. Excellent friendly informative staff, well organised and an absolutely delightful encounter with the seals. This activity was the highlight of our trip around the north and south islands. We will recommend this trip to anyone who will listen and encourage all visitors to NZ to get to Kaikoura and swim with the seals with Kaikoura Seal Swim

Hello, i'am afraid you'll have to wait for an answer from the swimming tour. From our experience, it would be difficult.. but not impossible. Our guide was swimming with us, we were 4 people with different level of ease. swimming in the waves, near the rocks can be tricky. but everything was really safe.
still, i can't imagine you leave the kids on the little boat, so that's what make it difficult.
have a nice experience

Hi. We will be in nz in August this year, however I can't seem to see any info about weather this is a year round attraction? Does this tour operate in August??
Written 16 May 2018
Hi,
I don’t know about August....that would be their “winter” so even with wet suits, I expect it would be cold. I suggest that you contact them directly through their website! Sorry....
