Seeing Wonderful New Zealand by train
Beautiful trip to see across the South Island. Great views, changing landscape East to West. I could go to the open car to take pictures, and the ride was comfortable.

he scenery was stunning, must do experience
The TranzAlpine train journey was simply amazing! The scenery was stunning, with snow capped mountains, deep gorges and lush forests passing by. The train was comfortable and the large windows made it easy to soak in all the breathtaking views. It's must do experience in New Zealand.

    Great train journey
We had a good experience with the Tranzalpine train from Christchurch to Greymouth. About a week prior to the journey, I called KiwiRail and asked for a request if we can be seated on the right side (forward-facing) of the train and they did their best to accommodate our request as there's no guarantee where you'll be seated. But based on my experience, it didn't really matter which side you were seated as you will experience great views on both sides. Although the train was full of passengers on that day, we managed to go to the open-air viewing. What I really like about this train journey is the commentary as you pass by each point of interest. You get to learn a bit of the history of the place. I gave it 4 stars as I thought it's a little expensive (NZ$219 for a standard one) based on my experience. The views became boring towards the end of the journey, and all you can see are trees on both sides. Also, with the price, I think that food should've been included.

Struck good weather so scenery and confort excellent. Nga Maunga Aotearoa unspoilt in many places. We need to ensure our original landscapes remain untouched by progress.

Brilliant experienece, wonderful staff less so customer communications.
Excellent product, train, staff, scenery etc. BUT.... be careful about how the back office management of customer communications. They Don't. Last week we waited at greymouth for return journey to Christchurch. Due to leave 2.05. At check in at 10 we were advised train incoming was late. Station staff had zero information on likely new ETD. Train came in hour and half approx late. Left at 3.30pm. Key issue was train problem occurred with engines just 45 minutes out of Christchurch. Tranzalpine knew of the likely delay time by 9.00 am yet said nothing to those of us waiting at Greymouth. We lsot thre chance to change our arrangements for arrival at Christchurch . We learned of problem from incoming passengers. A really unprofessional approach was taken with someone walking through train to apologise. etc but he didn't get the issue re: customer management. I emailed the company mid morning. They advised train staff would pass info sometime later. It never came to passengers waiitng on the platform. A brilliant experince but maybe company relies on us to perservere.

    Great experience
As I expected, the journey was memorable. There was very informative commentary delivered via headphones. Arrived into Greymouth early.

    Scenic plus review
I would recommend the Scenic Plus ticket from Christchurch to Greymouth. The scenery is amazing - I spent 90% of the journey in the observation car. As someone who finished a Geography degree over 30 years ago and has done nothing related to it since, it was like a glacial/alluvial landform revision course but you could equally enjoy for just being spectacular. My wife informs me the commentary was very informative - although I missed most of it. Food and drink good. Nothing much in Greymouth - either head back on the return train or plan to move straight on.

    Great Journey!
We loved it. Very comfortable carriages and our seating assignments had us sitting on the other side of the train on the return so we got to see both views. Train seemed very clean and the staff were super friendly, helpful and professional. Only 2 things that could have been better were that the headphone jacks didn’t work very well and the part of the trip with all the viaducts and tunnels had the outdoor observation cars temporarily closed. Otherwise we loved the whole trip and want to do it again already!

Relaxing train ride with stunning views
Beautiful views, especially around Arthur's Pass. There's an audio guide available which is great but not mandatory (you can turn it on or off as desired). Comfortable and nice bar where you can get some drinks or snacks. Very relaxing vibe throughout the whole journey.

    Splendid
Thoroughly enjoyed our one-way standard class journey on the TranzAlpine from Christchurch to Arthur's Pass. Comfortable and clear viewing from our table seats, interesting commentary via complimentary earphones and of course splendid alpine vistas from the open air viewing car. The buffet car gets very busy so duck in early, plus my gourmet pie was not heated through enough. Note the standard viewing car is not completely open, but still accessible enough to capture those stunning landscapes even though the train charges through the southern alps at a fair rate of knots.

Breathtaking views of NewZealand in a beautiful train car
Incredible vistas. New, modern, clean train cars w comfy tables and seats. Snacks for sale as well. Loved the outdoor train car to experience the beautiful countryside with the wind blowing. Did this as a family of 5–3 teens and spouse. We enjoyed it! Worth doing once!

Our recent trip on the train from Greymouth to Christchurch didn't quite live up to the promotional material. The train was over an hour late departing, and an hour and a half late on arrival in Christchurch. All very well, but standing round a crowded station with no seats or food/drink outlet does not make for an enjoyable wait.
We were on the right hand side of the carriage, and the scenery was largely on the left - not easy viewing and photos were dominated by reflections in the glass. The one viewing car was very crowded and it was extremely difficult to take photos through the dense array of safety bars.
The commentary offered was dysfunctional as the connections to plug in headsets were loose and it was extremely difficult to get a signal.
Staff were friendly and helpful, but the trip could have been much more enjoyable with a few improvements to the facilities. STRONGLY recommend anyone booking make sure they get seats on the side of the carriage closest to the scenery.

Owing to restrictions on travel to NZ due to Convid-19 virus, we found it necessary to cancel our Tranzalpine experience for next Tuesday. Even though our cancellation is more than 24 hours away, we were only able to obtain a 50% refund - not the 100% shown on the Trip Advisor site. This information should be corrected.

We were off to a fantastic trip until we got to Arthur’s Pass. A coal train derailed just in front of our train and our train was stuck halfway along the one way track. Kiwi Rail has to call for buses to get everyone down the Alps. Took 2 hours for buses to arrive and 2 more to get to Christchurch at 11:30pm ruining Valentines Day plans for hundreds. Crew did all they could but were limited by the situation and did not share a lot of information on what was happening.

We were able to check-in our luggage from 10am at Greymouth Station right after we checked out of our hotel. The check-in process was straightforward but you should arrive early if you have luggage as the station building is small and gets busy. You should be careful to check size and weight restrictions for luggage as these will typically be less than an equivalent plane journey.

The train itself is a tourist train operated by KiwiRail since there are no commuter trains outside large metropolitan areas in New Zealand. The train is purpose built for sight-seeing with large windows and glass roof to maximise scenic views. In the Greymouth to Christchurch direction the best views were found on the left hand side of the train, although we did have seats on the right hand side. There are great views on both sides. You won't be given a choice of seats as they are allocated automatically.

There is a outside viewing car available. For standard Scenic passengers the viewing car is right at the rear of the train so does involve walking through several carriages of a moving train to reach it. For Scenic Plus passengers the viewing car is just behind the Scenic Plus carriages.

There is a GPS activated commentary that can be listened to through provided headphones. If I'm honest, I did find some of the commentary a bit dull but there was still some interesting information. You can just remove the headphones if you don't want to hear it.

Staff continually move through the train to help passengers, provide safety information and keep the carriages safe and clean. The staff were always very professional. There is a buffet car serving a range of hot and cold food and drink including some meals that can be reheated. The Scenic Plus ticket provides an enhanced at seat meal service for a premium ticket price.

I have done the journey from Christchurch to Greymouth by car which is a spectacular drive but by train you can see it from a different perspective where you can relax in comfort.

We had been planning to do this trip with friends for some time and finally managed to co-ordinate dates to suit as we wanted to do it in wintertime. It was a fabulous day out to celebrate my husbands 70th birthday. We couldn't fault the whole experience which was extremely well organised from start to finish and we had good weather to make the day and see the winter wonderland of the Southern Alps.
We felt the food and beverage options on the train were well priced too.
We rather wished that we had spent the night in Greymouth as there wasn't much time there.
It is a long day out especially if you have children as you leave at 8.15 and return around 6.30 but it is certainly a wonderful experience. Loved the open air carriage to take photos from.

Kia Ora Diane B, Thank you for your lovely feedback and the five-star rating. So great to hear you finally got to experience TranzAlpine with special people for a special occasion! Very pleased you also had a stunning day to have a clear view the Southern Alps and made the most of our outdoor viewing carriage. Yes, a stopover for the night in Greymouth is definitely recommended, but if people do not have time, the train arrives into Greymouth at 1:05pm and departs again at 2:05pm, which is ample time to get to a local café for lunch before embarking again. We hope you enjoyed your onward travels equally and that you'll join us again soon. Best Wishes, Karen | The Great Journeys of New Zealand

Beautiful train journey. The scenery was fantastic even in late summer so winter may be even beautiful. We drove from Christchurch down to Milford Sound via Lake Tekapo and then up West coast to Greymouth. Took the train for the last leg - relaxing - may have been a bit expensive by switching to the rail for this segment because we could have driven by car to Christchurch but wanted to take the rail that was so talked about. No regrets.

What a beautiful experience! we boarded the Tranz Alpine Train for a comfortable ride through all of the beautiful terrain that we have enjoyed. The train, being a scenic train, was equipped with earphones so we could listen to a historical narrative as we traveled across the country.
Crossing the South Island from Greymouth to Christchurch, the Tranz Alpine is considered one of the worlds greatest train journeys. We traveled from west to the east of the through Arthur's Pass National Park.
From the comfort of our carriage we saw the lush beech forest, deep river valleys and the spectacular peaks of the Southern Alps in the distance. We descended to the windswept Canterbury Plains before arriving in the city of Christchurch.

Such a relaxing way to travel and great to just sit back and watch the views go by. So much better than driving over. The cafe car provides good sustenance and a good range. There were longish ques each time I visited, both ways, but good opportunity to chat with your fellow passengers. The audio commentary provided was very interesting. Recommend staying in Greymouth overnight (or longer) rather than doing the same day return trip. Recommend inquiring via Great Journeys about packages as we did.

Standard tickets were sold out so we had to fork out for "scenic-plus". Glad we did! It was trip highlight. Crisp white napkins, unending bubbly, great service and a lovely lamb stew.
The 5-hours of scenery was unforgettable - simply SPECTACULAR. Being a photographer, my bliss was standing in the 'open viewing carriage' where you can take photos through open windows not hampered by reflective glass. It was a sensory delight being out there, smelling train smells, whipping through tunnels, across gravel riverbeds and mountains, the wind in your hair!

Just write a review to let know people what's happening
Be aware if you book a ticket with them it's not a tourist attraction as like they say even if their price are expensive it's just a train so if there are late for some reason and you are not able to see something which was my case because when we were on the train during Arthur pass it was completely dark they don't do any refund or any compensation.
So before book and spend lot of money be aware and just understand it's just a train service and not a tourist trip like as they pretend in their website. They do lot of rules to be able to not refund you even with 2hours delay so also don't plan anything else on the day.

What they say
"Experience the South Island’s striking natural landscape by taking a train between Christchurch and Greymouth. Along this journey you’ll see epic vistas, travel the edges of the ice-fed Waimakariri River, traverse the Southern Alps, and see miles of native beech forest."

Reality
If they are late you don't see anything and they don't do any compensation or any partial refund

So if you are thinking to book with them just think of it twice before especially the train from Greymouth to Christchurch who already leave late.

Kia Ora Leliapoh, Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We are sorry to hear you were disappointed with your journey. Delays are a rare occurrence for us but unfortunately sometimes do happen. Unfortunately, when you travel in winter, the sun does set earlier so some views are more visible out of day light savings. We hope to welcome you back in the future. Best Wishes, Karen | The Great Journeys of New Zealand
