About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Lyndsey1240 contributionsExperiencing Milford Sound with Pure Milford is a MUST DO!Pure Milford offered an incredible experience during my visit to Milford Sound. Pickup from/drop off at my hotel was very convenient (and I appreciated the slightly later start time, compared to other operators). Brendan was an amazing guide, and broke up the long ride with commentary and jokes. He also worked hard to keep us to schedule, so that we were able to enjoy several bonus photo stops. The cruise was, of course, the major highlight, and the opportunity to explore Milford Sound was one of the best experiences I've had. The included lunch was delicious and generous, and I appreciated that they offered multiple options to cater for different dietary requirements. The cruise operator kept us all laughing, particularly at his Aussie jokes, and also shared interesting commentary that really enhanced the experience. The movie on the ride back was a nice touch and much appreciated to break-up the long trip to Queenstown. This was absolutely one of the highlights of my trip, and I would recommend Pure Milford to anyone looking to experience Milford Sound.Written 11 September 2024
- alexandrahK5229QH0 contributionsMilford in the RainReally great tour option to save driving yourself to Milford Sound! We had cloudy and rainy weather on the day but Milford was still gorgeous with endless waterfalls and great commentary on board the boat. The lunch provided was a hot pie, chips (crisps), apple, muesli bar and ANZAC biscuits along with complimentary coffee/tea/hot chocolate. Couldn't have asked for better! Basic commentary was provided on the coach bus, seats were comfortable! Only downside to the whole trip was the massive lack of heating on the coach - both ways! I found myself cold, particularly on the return trip after enjoying a waterfall too much, and noticed both ways that other passengers also appeared cold; using scarfs to wrap around themselves and sitting in bulky outdoor jackets/putting jackets back on they had taken off. I purchased a merino neck warmer at the Te Anau stop as I was so cold.Written 10 September 2024
- TMC32320 contributionsGreat Value Tour with Breathtaking Views!I left from Beach St, Queenstown. This was a fantastic tour to Milford Sound. On the coach ride, the driver and guide Luke was fantastic (knowledge and safe). The trip to the sound was only shadowed in beauty by the ferry ride through t the fjord to the Tasman Sea and back. The scenery was majestic and breathtaking on the entire tour from Queenstown.Written 31 August 2024
- celine_stm0 contributionsWonderful day at Milford sound!I had a great day! The driver/tour guide was very nice and told us all about the landscapes and everything else. The drives were so beautiful and the planned stops had beautiful views. The boat tour on the milford sound was soo amazing, we saw dolphins, a penguin and some seals!Written 27 August 2024
- Dream630391455380 contributionsGreat experience would definitely recommendIt was an overall great experience, the views are incredible and the driver was crackup with the commentary, only thing making this a 4 Star is the drive on the bus back was like being in the pits of hell due to being so draining and just wanting it to be over lmao If I was to recommend one thing it would be to -Bus there and do the boat ride, but then instead of bussing back it would be the best option to fly back unless you can handle the bus ride back Also another thing to NOTE the buses have toilets but they have locked them due to people not following rules so if you got a short platter then RIP ma broWritten 25 August 2024
- brads4020 contributionsWonderful dayOutstanding trip! Even the bus ride with Shallindra was fantastic. He was very friendly, informative, safe and a great sense of humor! Boat crew was great as well and the photos you’ve seen do not do the actual experience of being there justiceWritten 24 August 2024
- G5555YBchlo_l0 contributionsAmazing experience in Milford Sound!Amazing experience with Pure Milford! We did the couch-boat-couch experience and I would recommend it! We’ve been lucky enough to see some pingouins as well as some seals. We were a bit nervous about the length of the trip in the couch, but it went super fast thanks to our driver who gave us great informations during the drive. Thank you again for those memories!Written 23 August 2024
- nicharris700 contributionsA big day, but worth the trip!We made a last minute trip to Queenstown and I didn’t think we’d be able to squeeze Milford Sound in, but with this tour we were able to. Collection was easy, the onboard commentary on the way was very informative and well delivered. Our driver kept his cool with late passengers and rude road work crews. The drive was as good as the cruise, although Milford sound was breathtaking. The drive home was loooooonnnggg. Food on the cruise was good, free coffee was a bonus. All the staff really helpful and informative. I was disappointed to see the same trip being offered for less than we paid! Too bad so sad.Written 22 August 2024
- 404shanelw0 contributionsGreat experience delivered by an awesome teamOur guides were very friendly & knowledgeable with a great sense of humour. Views were amazing as per. Highly recommend!Written 16 August 2024
- Camper383512305670 contributionsMilford Sound Day tour with Cheeky KiwiThe whole experience of our Milford Sound Day tour was amazing. Our tour guide, Soap went above and beyond making sure everyone gets all the good photos. He also knows secret locations where you’ll get beautiful pics. All round professional and funny at the same time. Top experience!Written 14 August 2024
- Jelaire B0 contributionsWell worth it !!My adult daughter and I went with Robin today to Milford Sounds on the coach. And she was the most incredible driver. Safe, knowledgeable, and very interesting. Didn't even realise we had been on the bus for over 5 and a half hrs with stops. Fully recommend Pure Milford. Cruise was absolutely awesome 👏 well done Robin you were amazing !!Written 5 August 2024
- BillGaventa0 contributionsFun, reasonable, very competentIt is a long day from Queenston, but the coach and driver were excellent. Stan is a very entertaining and knowledgeable guy.Stops break up the trip. We had a picture perfect day on Milford Sound, without as many waterfalls as others have seen because it has not rained a lot lately. But also saw dolphins, a seal, and yellow necked penguin. Well worth it. I could have driven to Milford Sound on my own but it would have taken me just as long, and this way I got to sit back and enjoy, or sleep!Written 4 August 2024
- lexg9090 contributionsAMAZING TIME!! I RECCOMENDOn the catamaran we were able to get sprayed by a waterfall taller than Niagra Falls and see dolphins, furseals, and penguins ! Not everyone sees the penguins so we were lucky. Really enjoyed that I didn’t have to worry about bringing a meal(s) unlike some of the other tour groups. With Milford Sound Coach and Crusie we had a half hour stop in the morning to grab a small breakfast from a cafe and a lunch meal ticket (vegan and gluten free option available) was provided for us on the cruise. No hassle!! Everyone encouraged us to visit Milford Sound while visiting the South Island (they were correct) and I cant recommend this tour enough. Cam, our driver, was incredibly friendly and personable. Commentary from our driver was excellent: we learned geology and history facts about the area. We stopped at many areas in the park and were able to take photos, enjoy scenery, etc. This coach (unlike Great Sights, etc) has rooftop windows which is a GAME CHANGER for a couple reasons. 1) as you are in Fiordland National Park there will be times it’s only possible to see the mountains by looking UP- not out. 2) on the drive back to Queenstown you can see the stars if it’s a clear night ! My friend and I stargazed for an hour from our seats on the bus. Coming from a city in the States, Im not sure I had ever seen so many!Written 2 August 2024
- 297iqtidara0 contributionsStunning day out in the MilfordAmazing day out, yes like other reviews mention it is a long day looking at a 5 hour bus ride twisting turning there and back, longer on the way with extra scenic stops however the views are so amazing you don’t really feel it! Leaving before sunrise and returning after sunset! Brian our bus driver was amazing had a wealth of knowledge to keep us interested on everything around us along the way. The only thing to mention might be that the places they pick up from are limited so we had to uber ourselves there and back. Would be great if they add more pickup options.Written 27 July 2024

We were so excited to go to Milford Sound during our visit to New Zealand. Unfortunately it didn’t turn out the way we had hoped. We intentionally booked this tour because the company only half fills the boat with customers allowing for more room for viewing and movement. On the day of our cruise the boat was completely full with nowhere to sit or see the sights. It was pouring rain which is obviously no fault of the company but it did make things more difficult with so many people. The boat and the bus and the staff were very nice but the entire experience was lost due to the crowded boat and lack of space.

Kia Ora,
Thank you for joining our Milford Sound exploration, and for taking the time to share your considered feedback.
We are delighted that you enjoyed the warm Kiwi hospitality on both coach and cruise from our fabulous team, and that the rain did not dampen your spirits! We do say the wetter the better at Milford Sound as it really comes alive with waterfalls after a deluge :-)
Thank you for your feedback on the volume of people on board. We always operate below our maximum surveyed capacity, however we understand that these numbers need to be frequently looked at and so will take this on board during our next review.
We really apprecitae you taking the time to share the feedback, and hope you enjoy the rest of your time here in Aotearoa,

What's annoying is being told to be 10 minutes 'early' for a 9:30 departure, when the actual depart is 10am. So we wasted almost an hour of a precious NZ day.
If you're going from Te Anau, ignore the times given, and be at Hollyford at 10am for a 10:10 departure.
Our driver was great, Milford is beautiful.

Kia Ora,

We are sorry to hear that your pick up time was miscommunicated to you, and you ended up waiting longer at the cafe. It seems that there was a delay on your day in particular which resulted in the coach leaving later, so we do apologise for that.
It is a shame that this was the stand out part of your day in Fiordland and Milford Sound, especially with such amazing photo stops, stunning scenery, fabulous commentray and spectacular cruising on the agenda.
We are glad you enjoyed the trip after the later start, and hope you have safe onwards travels,

Thanks to covid it wasn’t crowded at all. Caught the bus from Te Anau which is what I’d recommend. The driver, Dave, was entertaining in a very kiwi way. The entire trip is like a classic yarn and the volume isn’t so loud that if you chose to not listen it’s easy enough. There were several stops along the way to hop off and get some photos. The boat, the Gem of the Sound I believe, was very nice and tidy. Sanitation and tables marked off for distancing. Crew were all friendly and knowledgeable. The sites were also amazing and they get really close up to the shore a couple of times, once to drench you with a waterfall (if you want).

Kia Ora,
Thanks for joining our day tour to Milford Sound, and for sharing this lovely review with us.
There aren't many upsides to Covid, but less crowds and more space and time to enjoy magical Milford is certainly one of them.
We're so thrilled you enjoyed the experience from start to finish with wonderful crew and spectacular scenery.
Well done for getting involved in the waterfall experience too; are you looking 10 years younger yet?
Thanks again for choosing Pure Milford and we hope to see you in Piopiotahi again soon,

What an amazing day! Wayne, our driver, kept us entertained with interesting stories of the area for the duration of the journey to Milford sound. The reports we had heard of the beauty of the trip did not prepare us for the sheer majesty we encountered. The cruise, also, exceeded our expectations. The crew on board the Gem ensured that we had an entertaining trip (special thanks to Ryan and Jasmine). Sadly the glacial facial failed to live up to expectations lol. Thanks to COVID we enjoyed plenty of space. Get in now before the masses arrive again.

Outstanding day. Debbie our driver and guide was just superb. Friendly, efficient, effective, knowledgeable, and the most excellent driver! The cruise was everything we expected, with a lovely modern boat, great crew, good fun commentary from the skipper, some real highlights on the 2 hour cruise and a lot of interesting stuff. Would not have missed it. Can’t recommend highly enough.

This was an amazing trip! The whole experience ran very smoothly - the coach pick-up, the lunch, the cruise itself. The staff on board the catamaran were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. We were fortunate to see the Sound in glorious sunshine, so there were many photo opportunities for all. What did mar the day for us was the return coach journey to Te Anau. Although the driver was at great pains to tell us that the coach had air conditioning, this was clearly not the case! With no stops on the way back, and very little air on the coach, the heat became almost unbearable. We certainly pitied those passengers who had to tolerate the heat all the way back to Queenstown. A disappointing end to an otherwise brilliant day.

Thank you for joining our coach & cruise exploration of Fiordland, and for taking the time to share this wonderful feedback.
We are delighted to hear that the day ran like clockwork, and it was such an amazing experience for you.
The scenery is spectacular no matter what the weather, but what is not to love about a sunny day in paradise :-)
We are sorry to hear that the journey back was so uncomfortable. That is ceratinly a less than ideal way to finish such a fantastic day, so we will follow up with our coach provider to ensure that this does not happen again.
Thank you again for joining us, and for all of this valuable feedback!

Kia Ora,
Thanks for joining our coach & cruise tour from Te Anau, and for sharing this lovely feedback!
Joining in Te Anau is the perfect way to experience the best parts of the tour without the earlier start and later finish of the Queenstown comrades. The 12pm sailing manages to hit the lunchtime sweetspot, but still just misses the lunchtime rush. Pure Magic!

As expected, the experience with the boat ride in-between the valleys and mountains was truly amazing. We were lucky to have a beautiful sunny day which gave us a good experience. On the other hand, as there is no rain, we didn’t see lots of waterfalls except a few small ones and of course, Stirling Falls are still beautiful. We also saw pods of dolphins and one lonely seal ! Lunch was included and it was basic ( either hot chicken/mushroom or hot veggie pie to choose from ) , fruit and some snacks. We would like to have had more options to be provided as one of us was not catered for. Drinks and other food can be purchased on board.
Driver is very informative and helpful in giving us commentary and lots of brief stops for some very scenic photo opportunities along the way. The journey itself felt quite long as is 2 hours from Te Anau and 3.5 hours from Queenstown. I am glad someone was driving instead of us.

Thank you for joining our day tour to Piopiotahi / Milford Sound, and for this lovely feedback!
It certainly pays to have a seasoned pro take care of the driving, allowing you to fully absorb the stunning sights throughout the day!
We do say the wetter the better at Pioiptahi / Milford Sound as thousands of ''pop-up'' waterfalls appear after a deluge and bring the fiord to life!
There really is no such thing as bad weather though, as Piopiotahi is also simply stunning on a sunny day too.
We hope to welcome you back on a wetter day in the future!

Driver excellent - friendly and informative. Nice stops on the way to break up the drive. Loved the boat ride, and were so glad to have the very good lunch that was served. We are on a lengthy road trip and we’re thankful to have opted for the bus taking us on the road in, which was so busy. Definitely a must do for travelers to NZ.

Thank you for choosing to join our coach & catamaran exploration of Fiordland, and for this wonderful feedback.
We are big advocates for the coach option when visiting Piopiotahi / Milford Sound. Leave the hassle of driving to the seasoned pros so you can sit back, relax and soak up the endless stunning sights! There is so muhc to see - you won't want to miss a thing :-)
We are honoured to be labelled an NZ ''must-do'' and hope we get the opportunity to meet you at Milford again,

There did appear to be, but possibly only for real emergencies. We did have a bathroom break on the way to the Sound, as well as various stops for photo opportunities. However, the driver asked everyone to use the bathroom on the boat or in the terminal before starting the return journey as he would NOT be stopping on the way back to Te Anau. This may only have applied to that one particular coach - I can only relate to our personal experience……
