Great trip by Southern Discoveries and Air Milford in Queenstown
This was our last big excursion of our trip to New Zealand from US. Our driver over on the coach, Shayle, was excellent. Very knowledgeable and it was easy to understand his instructions and details. He took good care of us. The fly back was just breathtakingly beautiful-I highly recommend going back this way. The eight seater plane was operated by Emma at Air Milford. She explained what we were seeing and the aerial view-I was awestruck by the beauty.

      Fantastic day out
Absolutely fantastic day out. Jamie our driver/guide was great, really friendly and knowledgeable. We had plenty of stops on the drive to Milford Sound to take photos. The boat trip & observatory were well worth doing, the scenery is spectacular. The picnic lunch was also very good!

      Fantastic time for all.
Our bus driver was brilliant great knowledge and humour explained so many things. We felt safe through the whole trip. The boat ride through the Milford Sounds was superb. The whole trip from start to finish was superb with heaps of laughs, food on the boat and photos. Recommend to the MAX

      Milford Sound coach tour
Coach trip was good, but long on the way back could do with breaking that up as well. The boat trip was good except that the toilet facilities were basically all broken and for a full boat doesn’t work well. Overall good day though

Wonderful trip - skip the observatory!
The Milford Sound experience was wonderful - the commentary was good, the waterfalls were plenty and nice and the free coffee was welcome and timely. The underwater observatory can be skipped and the only reason I have a 4 grade. We can say we did our part by paying and contributing to this observatory. It had rained the previous couple of days but there was bright sunshine during our boat ride. would like to see this on a rainy day too now.

      Better than the other trips.
Spend less time on the bus AND visit the unique underwater observatory! Travelling from Te Anau is much shorter than from Queenstown.

A Long Day - But Beautiful Scenary
Milford Sound is awesome! Beautiful ! Buffet was pretty OK. Be aware though, that the journey to/from Queenstown is a long one…essentially a 12.5 hr trip with a 1hr 45 min cruise. The nature component of the trip was the driver providing a running commentary of flora and fauna en route to the Fiord.

Excellent, efficient, informative, and a good length of time to view the amazing nature around. We didn’t go to the observatory as wanted to be outside. Highly recommend.

Great journey to Milford Sound and Underwater Observatory
Our reason for visiting Queenstown was to experience Fiordland National Park. Unwilling to drive the many miles to Milford Sound, we booked the Milford Sound Cruise with Southern Discoveries. We were fortunate enough to be upgraded by Nathan to the Milford Sound Cruise and Underwater Observatory tour. The bus journey was a bit long, but our guide, Shale, made it enjoyable with his knowledge and Kiwi humor. Since the scenery along the Milford Road was spectacular with distant vistas and through rain forests, the time passed quickly. The weather was superb and thus the cruise was very enjoyable with mountain peaks, mountain ranges and waterfalls always in sight. The buffet was tasty and the underwater observatory was interesting. We highly recommend the tour.

Queenstown to Milford sound, the guide made the day!
A 4-5 hour trip to Milford Sound from Queenstown had me concerned but I needn't have worried. I was unaware that Brandon was not just a driver of the bus but a well informed and entertaining guide that made the time fly by. He even demonstrated his driving skills when confronted by a recently fallen tree! We had a great day out and would recommend such a well put together trip.

      Incredible & unforgettable
I only had 2 full days in Queenstown so was unsure whether to do the trip but it was worth the full day and worth every penny! The journey there was just as incredible as Milford itself. The weather varied throughout the day but the views are super in any setting. I had Keith as a driver who was amazing and insightful. Would recommend to anyone!

Excellent experience overall on the Southern Discoveries tour
We had an excellent experience overall on the Southern Discoveries tour. The bus ride from Queenstown, the cruise, the buffet lunch (good vegetarian and vegan options) and the underwater observatory are all great. Don't forget to take a warm beanie for the cruise, and some insect repellent if you are going to the underwater observatory.

Travelled after the washout of the road in convoy - not a problem. Was on a small minibus, which was quite uncomfortable and we had not been given an option to go on the bigger bus. There was limited legroom and on the way back there was an issue with the heating and aircom which led to excessive heat and an uncomfortable journey. The driver provided a long commentary on the way there, which showed that he really understood the area. However, many of the comments were inappropriate and very sexist. The boat tour was fantastic. The picnic lunch was good.

Great commentary on the bus from Te Anau to Milford. Very knowledgeable and friendly. The cruise was stunning. Scenery as awesome as expected but dolphins riding the bow wave, seals lazing in the sun was a bonus,
Were lucky enough to get a deal where it was cheaper to get the bus frpm Te Anau that it was just to do the cruise. So lucky we did, the bus part really added to the trip.

From the moment we got on the bus in Te Anau, our bus driver started telling us about everything. He was very very knowledgeable about the area to Milford Sound and kept it all very interesting. Even adding is jokes. Our photo stops were absolutely amazing. The cruise through Milford Sound was also spectacular and our captain again very knowledgeable about the area.
The weather wasn't too bad. We thoroughly enjoyed our day.
    Thank you so much 💓

The coach ride to Milford Sound was smooth, our driver/guide, Keith was informative and provided various scenic lookout points for photo-taking, he even volunteered to take our photos. His timing was punctual and we were in good hands under his care. Great to have chosen Southern Discoveries!

I had the real pleasure of taking the Southern Discoveries-Go Milford Tour today from Te Anau. This was truly one of those days where you could take a picture of literally everything you see, and feel so lucky at the end that you were able to visit. I highly recommend staying in Te Anau and doing this tour from there as doing it from Queenstown adds about five more hours of travel, and leaves less time at the Sound. That also limits how often you stop on the way, while we made five or six stops, each well worth the time (and such photo ops). There are several options at the Sound-again, I highly recommend making sure you are on a Nature Cruise and adding the Underwater Discovery Center. Not only is the Nature Cruise longer, with excellent narration, but it's a smaller boat that stays out longer and pulls up to not only waterfalls, but seals! It drops you off at the Discovery Center -which doesn't take long, but is interesting-then you board a different boat to return to harbor. And that's when you realize you made the right choice! Our second boat had been an Explorer cruise, was a larger boat-and had three large tour groups! Our experience was much better! Lunch is a picnic lunch-but better than I was expecting, a pleasant surprise with coffee and tea the entire trip. There are also other drinks and food available for purchase-including a lovely looking soup. Overall-this was just a wonderful trip, made particularly special thanks to our bus driver Reece. Reece was a very safe driver, professional and organized-but a local who truly loves his job and the area, and it shows. His generosity of spirit made this one of the best day trips I've taken-and I'm on my 29th country. Very impressed with everything today-thank you Reece and Southern Discoveries for a spectacular trip in a spectacular Park!

I was skeptical going in. I normally despise bus tours - I prefer touring at my own pace, stopping where I want and exploring places where the tourbusses aren't.

But after a few days of driving in an economy subcompact, I decided the 9-ish hours to Milford and back were a bit much for me to spend behind the wheel. So I bit the bullet and bought some coach tickets.

And I was not disappointed. It was worth every penny.

For one thing, the Homer Tunnel was closed while they cleared an avalanche on the milford side. I would not have known that, but my driver did. I would've been stuck in traffic near the divide, getting more and more frustrated as time went on. Instead I sat back and had regular updates, got the opportunity to wander around while we waited, and generally relax while an inquisitive kea attempted to dismantle another tourist's rental car.

Our driver and guide had a wonderfully dry sense of humor and was articulate and informative. The entire drive to the sound was a long stream of amusing anecdotes, local legends, history, and even geology. The bus itself was surprisingly comfortable, and timed stops to keep everyone from getting too antsy. The stops themselves were in places I would've stopped to see anyway - Te Anau, Mirror lakes, Knob Flat, The Divide, etc. Due to the delay we didn't have time to stop at a few other spots that I'd've liked to have seen, but perhaps next time.

The cruise itself was a nice excursion. I'm pleased that they held the cruises until all the delayed busses could arrive. It meant there was precious little time to sightsee around Milford itself, but it was made up for by a pleasant boat excursion, a nice lunch, and a lot of beautiful scenery. It appears that pretty much every boat takes roughly the same course, so perhaps the cruises are all fairly equivalent, but it was a fun ride.

The ride back was quieter and the bus driver showed Taika Waititi's "Hunt For the Wilderpeople", which was a cute bit of NZ filmmaking. I talked to a friend who as it turned out had taken the same tour a few years ago and had been shown "Whale Rider." Apparently showing NZ films on the bus is a Thing.

It wasn't a cheap ride, but it wasn't stupidly expensive either, and definitely worth every penny. Certainly there were a lot of tourists even in the off season, but it was so ridiculously beautiful and so much fun that even vaguely-misanthropic me didn't care one bit.
