About
The walk, led by your nature guide, is on a well-formed track across the peninsula, through spectacular coastal forest to a secluded sandy beach. As dusk sets in and daylight diminishes, venture by torchlight through the native forest with the stars and forest night sounds around you. The walk will take about 45 minutes one-way and the track emerges on to Ocean Beach. This wide sandy beach is where kiwi are often found feeding among the grasses and seaweed. Here in the darkness you may spot the Southern brown kiwi (Rakiura Tokoeka) - often searching for food. Afterwards retrace your steps through the forest to Little Glory Wharf for your catamaran ride back to Oban township on Stewart Island. Please be sure to dress weather appropriate and bring insect repellant. You must arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled departure to check in.

    Stewart Island Experience
Stop: 4 hours - Admission included
At dusk depart from Stewart Island's Halfmoon Bay in our catamaran for a cruise across Paterson Inlet to Little Glory Cove. During the cruise pass Ulva Island (a predator-free sanctuary) and learn about Stewart Island's rich history. Once at Little Glory Cove, disembark onto a wharf at the southern part of the peninsula known as The Neck. Here in the darkness you will get to see the Southern brown kiwi (Rakiura Tokoeka) - often searching for food. What a disappointment
Really disappointed, not so many days on Stewart Island and our trip was suddenly cancelled
Due to vessel engine problems. Was really disappointed as staff although arranging refund did
Not go to any attempt to move to other options other than to say they were fully booked.
Not really satisfactory.

Kiwi encounter
Feb 2020 • Friends
Last night our group of 6 joined this tour and we weren't disappointed. The young enthusiastic guides and boat skipper made it so great. And of course our beautiful bush and kiwi!!
Well prepped beforehand we just had to take it all in. We were rewarded with a sighting where the kiwi busily foraged and went about its wanderings while our guide kept the red light on it for 10 minutes so we all had a close up of our national emblem in the wild. No kiwi on the beach but alas there was a feral cat on the prowl.

Great Kiwi encounter
The tour started with a comprehensive introduction to the Kiwis in New Zealand and the typical wildlife we would come across on our trip.

In the trip across the seas, we were fortunate to have a good weather day, allowing us to see a spectacular sunset and the chance to spot penguins, seals, albatrosses and dolphins.

The walk through the forest started in the dark and we had to use our torches discreetly and even after scouring the beach, we weren’t able to spot any kiwis. We were about to give up hope when, on the return trip, we spotted two sightings of the Southern Brown Kiwi, rummaging through the ferns and bushes for their grubs. Red light was used to shine on them, apparently it does not frighten them, but we had to keep real quiet and take turns to watch them feed.

We were glad to have made this trip and spend our Christmas Eve in an unforgettable way. Real Journeys has great guides for this trip, who were experienced and very knowledgeable and took great care of us, making us hot chocolates and coffee during the sea trip.
