Brilliant trip to Milford Sound and cruise the Fiord.
Brilliant trip with a great coach driver Greg, who’s knowledge and communication was first class. The trip was well planned, on time, and covered all the items you would want to experience.

      Good cruise overall
We booked a 3 hour discover more cruise but the boat returned back well before the 3 hours was up. The cost of car parking took the edge off the trip. The parking price was a real scam. Disgraceful prices. I feel sad to be a Kiwi. So many people saying how over priced the parking was. The cruise was good, just shorter than we expected.

Bus journey was great.. but the boat was overcrowded.
We did this tour on Friday, The day before we were phoned by the company offering us a free upgrade to view the underwater observation place. We accepted gratefully. But unfortunately it was not mentioned on the day? The bus ride there and back again was fantastic. Roland was a great driver and told us very interesting things about the area. The actual boat ride was crammed with to many people. A very large group of people were singing loudly in their own language and dancing on board and not to be outdone another group decided to have their own singing and dancing show. Because of these people we were not able to hear the commentary by the on board crew about the area and waterfalls. Unfortunately we did not enjoy the experience as much as we had hoped we would.

      Fantastic 1h45 tour
The 1h45 tour was fantastic, the sun was up so the colours and scenery were really beautiful. The boat goes pretty close to the main waterfall so you can see them very well and take pictures. You also have free coffee and tea, which is great because it gets pretty cold. Me and my brother had a wonderful time :)

      Superb cruise on the Sound
Awesome cruise from start to finish. Milford Sound is truly a wonder of the and the cruise is the best way to see it - we had a wet day, which makes it even more epic as all the temporary waterfalls are active!

Tour driver, Paul, shared great Maori legends & stories en route...extra nice
Our tour was on time and that is the result of Paul being very conscientious. His storytelling was delightful and helped the long bus trip move along quicker. The bus had a sun roof and we stopped for restroom breaks frequently. Overall, it was a good experience. Lunch buffet was good and well supplied and we were incredibly fortunate to have beautiful weather. The only way to add the last star was to give us more time on the actual boat. We were out and back at the dock too quickly for me.

      Safety warning.
The coach driver was not very professional. The boat trip was great a 5 plus. The coach trip was very stressfull. In the first 30 minutes of our trip the coach driver had whilst driving the bus. Received and carried out a phone call. Kept reading his day/run sheet, taking his eyes off the road. Kept turning around to talk to a passenger who he obviously knew. This passenger was seated in the first row near the door. When the passenger spoke he would look directly at them. I did not feel safe and spent the whole trip watching the driver ready to yell at him if he was about to run off the road.

All that we had hoped…and more
After an early morning pickup near our hotel, drive/guide Keith proved an excellent driver and tour guide whose knowledge was encyclopedic. It revealed how much he loves this spectacular land and his desire to share it. The four hour coach ride was punctuated with well timed and selected stops as we wound our way through the valleys and climbed into to mountains before the drop down into Milford Sound. That’s when the ‘spectacularity’ really ramped up. We picked a perfect day. As we are here in shoulder season, we were able to make our reservations just a few days ahead for the day with the best forecast. And it was…the best day! Our buffet lunch was delicious. The waterfalls were everywhere. And the stop at the underwater observatory was interesting if not awe inspiring. I’m glad we did it. Highly recommend this company.

      Highly reccomend the Observatory
Great cruise. The Captian / Guide provided great commentary. The under water observatory is well worth doing just for the design/logistics let alone the sea life.

      Terrific day on the sound
We just headed terrific day, cruising the Milford sound and having the optional underwater observatory and kayak tour. The amount of time on each activity was terrific for a one day trip. The cruise was beautiful, we had perfect weather which helped and the staff was very helpful and engaging. The kayaking was short, but gave us an opportunity to see a seal and some birds up close as well as the glacial water as it tumbled down into the river.

Number One Driver of Number One Bus
The tour was wonderful. Despite the various weather we experienced: rain, heavy fog, snow and luckily bright sunshine at Milford Sound. Our driver Mr Stein of Bus #1 managed keep the trip on time and fun. He was very respectful, funny, professional and knowledgeable. He is excellent, the Number One Good Driver! We enjoyed the great trip. Wang

Probably this was the worst decision I have ever made to go with Southern Discoveries. A really horrible experience. We pre booked our meal( GF) and hence didn’t carry our own food but we had to hear in the cruise counter that our meal preference is out of stock. Hence we had to literally starve .
I confirmed in the morning from the Southern Discoveries counter (110 beach street) that the coach will drop us in the same pickup point ( i.e. 110 beach street) . But the coach driver was in hurry on our way back and he forced us to get down in some other location ( somewhere in city).
We were a group of 6 people including an infant and the oldest person was of 80 years old. I requested multiple times that it will be too much for them to walk to the pickup point( where I did park my car this morning ) and also its tough to carry the car seat all the way. But the coach driver was too adamant and was very rudely repeatedly asking us to leave the coach immediately.
We didn’t have any other choice but to get down there itself.
This really spoiled our entire holiday and I would not recommend this service to anyone.
Note: I have been here in Queenstown multiple times and have done this milford sound coach and cruise tour( with other service providers ) N number of times. I have never experienced similar situation .

The bus ride made timely stops for photo opportunities and restrooms, and our driver, Keith, was very entertaining and knowledgeable about New Zealand, as well as safe and conscientious. The boat was also a wonderful experience with incredible scenery and helpful staff and captain. We loved the entire experience!

When everyone went upstairs for the view, staff offered buffet lunch without further noticing customers either in prior or on site that they only offered the lunch for around 45 mins (not for the whole cruise trip) - which when I got downstairs for my buffet lunch with extra pay, everything was packed up!!!
I ended up having some snacks and awful sandwiches as a compensation!
When I asked for refund, they turned me down. What a ridiculous arrangement!

The scenery is spectacular and our guide was entertaining and knowledgeable. We had the buffet lunch on the boat and it was average for the $50NZ price. Staff didn’t replenish food trays and many missed out on some food items. Lots of great photo opportunities but a long day on the bus. There’s no getting around that though.

An outstanding trip and truly memorable experience. A long excursion from Queenstown which passed seemingly quickly due to the magnificent scenery with amusing (and informative) commentary from the coach driver - Stan. I look forward to our next trip with Southern Discoveries.

What an experience! We had the wonderful Keith as our driver and his knowledge of the area and its history was so interesting and made for a very entertaining drive. He stopped off at key viewing points for photo ops and explained so much about the areas so we know what we were looking at. He really made the day special by going the extra mile. Once we got to Milford Sound, boarding instructions were very clear and the cruise was INCREDIBLE. Even on a dreary day we were in complete awe of the waterfalls and beautiful scenery. We even saw some seals! The boat commentary was great also. Great day!

Spectacular. We were prepared for the rain and so were able to enjoy the trip. The guides were great. Going by coach allowed us to relax and enjoy the ride out and back and the stops we made along the way only added to the trip.

Thank you for choosing Southern Discoveries as your Milford Sound operator. Nga mihi,

Great journey to and around the Milford Sound. Couldn’t have been better especially with driver Stan sharing info and stories along the way. We learned a lot. Amazing views through bus windows and at stops along the way. And boat trip was magical especially driving up to the waterfalls. And water observatory was cool too. Highly recommend the Southern Discoveries crew!

I travelled with a friend from Oz and we definitely got the VIP treatment from Greg our driver and very informative guide. We laughed most of the way there and back. He was a crack. Great teeth. What could have been a long silent journey was anything but. The views: Some of the most spectacular scenery at every turn. Plenty of photo opportunities and pit stops. Lucky I took a bottle with me to take in fresh glacial water from Monkey Creek. A highlight. Milford Sound: breathtaking and I great reminder of how precious our environment is. The buffet was great, I recommend the cous cous. A great day out and well worth the cost for what we were able to see. Highly Recommended.
