About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- barryg3850 contributionsFantastic! We drove ourselves since we were staying in Te Anau so cannot comment on any bus ride. My advice is as follows if you have your own car which I recommend. Take the early cruise (ours was 11 am), start at 7:30 am go get there, stop first at Mirror Lake before it gets crowded (we had the place to ourselves for 15 minutes or so). Did not stop on the way up other then Mirror Lake and the stops on the way back were let downs after the incredible sights on Milford Sound. Parking is VERY limited. Pure Milford was a delight, smaller groups then what I saw on other boats. Pure Milford was a highlight of our 3 week trip. Had sunny weather which is great and a curse since the waterfalls were not at max. Any questions let me know.Written 25 March 2025
- R3065ABmichaeld0 contributionsExcellent experienceThe views were awesome and the commentary was very good. Well worth the cost.. Would visit again for the experience. Brilliant.Written 17 March 2025
- murrays4480 contributionsMoney well spent..Pure Milford was fantastic. The presentation was equal parts humour and information, they really put the colour into it.Written 12 March 2025
- HeatherS48980 contributionsThe perfect cruiseAbsolutely fantastic. The crew were exceptional- very helpful and their knowledge of the Milford Sounds awesome. Great tour guide throughout the cruise. Easy to listen and understand what was said. Breathtaking tourWritten 11 March 2025
- Bergsveld0 contributionsWell worth itPure Milford boat was clean and spacious with several viewing decks. Staff were very friendly and informative. Food for purchase and free tea and coffee was great too! Lots of opportunities for pictures but many waterfalls were dry. Otherwise the drive to the Sound from Te Anau was spectacular - well worth the visit.Written 9 March 2025
- NeilB25830 contributionsJust book and do it!The tour was excellent, the staff were great and entertaining. The journey to Milford is spectacular and only got better when on the boat. Just book it, you won’t regret it.Written 5 March 2025
- TL13590 contributionsWonderfulFabulous cruise. We were very lucky in that it rained all morning allowing fantastic views of hundreds of waterfalls on our drive from Te Anau. It stopped raining and the sun came out when we were on the boat. The waterfalls in the Sound were therefore spectacular. A fun crew.Written 3 March 2025
- Clara M0 contributionsAmazingThis was an amazing experience with great view and they offered free coffee and tea on board. We had a great afternoon. Also the drive there is amazing and you should plan a little bit more time so that u can take a few of the amazing stops. I would recommend doing thisWritten 27 February 2025
- marikad5820 contributionsAwesomeAn unforgettable experience . Amazingly beautiful sites . The cruise was fantastic and our captain gave a great informative commentary interspersed with a touch of humour. Lunch was really lovely- yummy pie and loved our surprise picnic lunch bag. However, the trip home on the bus was scary and uncomfortable with our driver driving very fast and aggressively.Written 27 February 2025

- tourvb0 contributionsGreat boat ride with fantastic viewsThis was an absolutely fantastic cruise for a couple of hours. 3 deck boat with the best view on top deck but be prepared for high winds especially through the straights. Great photo graph probabilities and lunch was alright but slim for vegetable hater. The deck hands were very friendly and helpful. Well worth the trip driving up to the ferry boats.Written 22 February 2025
- keziai20190 contributionsBreathtaking views. Milford is a MUST! You will not regret it!Milford sound is a must if travelling to NZ! Honestly, the scenery is breathtaking. The coach driver was great, stopping at all the sights and photo ops along the way to Milford. The cruise was amazing! Lots of photo opportunities onboard and the staff happy to assist. Food provided onboard was tasty. Make sure to pack sunscreen and insect repellent. This was the second time I have done the Milford cruise and I would do again! Highly recommend!Written 16 February 2025

I was intimidated by this very long bus ride but ended up loving every moment of it. We paid for the premium seats and sat in the second row (more leg room than first row) - great views forward, to the side and even above! These modern & clean buses have glass ceilings for viewing the steep mountain walls of Fiordland NP. We had beautiful weather and the January days are long so the sun was still up when we finally rolled back into Queenstown. Our driver, Junior, provided excellent commentary that I enjoyed as much as Milford Sound itself. The bus has a bathroom but he did not recommend it and there were sufficient stops w/ restrooms. Bus has intermittent wifi, depending on where it is. Do it!

Fantastic trip! 4-5 hours each way in the coach, was comfortable and commentary was great along the way. Plenty of stops and toilet breaks, felt safe driving with Brendan. Actual cruise at Milford Sound was phenomenal and was amazed at the space and setup of the ship! Lunch was well organised.
Note: If you are a group of more than 2, I would recommend boarding the coach at one of the first earlier stops. My family of 5 was broken up throughout single seats on the bus as we boarded at the last pickup location! We were able to shuffle around during the trip 😊

Kia Ora,
Thank you so much for your wonderful review!
We’re thrilled to hear that you had a fantastic time and enjoyed the comfort of the coach, the commentary, and the spectacular Milford Sound cruise.
It’s great to know that you felt safe with Brendan behind the wheel.
We also appreciate your helpful tip for larger groups. We certainly try to keep families together but sometimes single passengers have other ideas. We’re glad you were able to make it work by shuffling around during the journey!
We hope to welcome you and your family back again soon for another unforgettable experience!

The Milford sound tour was amazing! Our tour guide and driver Ian was a wealth of knowledge. We were a bit disappointed when we woke up to a cloudy rainy day, but by the end of our trip we realized that it made it 10x more beautiful. When it’s raining, or just after the rain, there are 10x more waterfalls. They call those temporary waterfalls - the top of the cliffs are just pools of water, so once it starts raining it spills over the top, and since the rock cliffs are granite, it all spills down as it doesn’t absorb into the granite. They were all over the canyon. There were only a few that they called “permanent waterfalls” so we knew we were seeing so many more. Since likely no one wanted to brave the weather, and since the helicopter and planes couldn’t fly in the rain, we had plenty of room on the boat. Also since there were waterfalls everywhere, there were good views all around. I would highly recommend wearing warm clothes and good rain gear and boots if it’s raining, since it gets wet and windy on the top deck, but it’s the best view. We were debating whether to do the flight versus the coach ride, but we were glad we took the coach since we were able to see the country and the drive there and saw the Fjordland national park which was beautiful. They had plenty of bathroom stops. I recommend getting something to eat at the cafe stop on the way. We got something at the cafe, but also walked across the street to the gas station where they had other snacks including ice cream bars, chips, and candy bars. Only the last hour of the ride back home did I start to feel like it was a long day. Final tip: bring headphones or ear plugs for the trip. We had a crying baby for part of the trip, so it was helpful to block that out. If you can, take the trip to Milford Sound rain or shine!

Kia Ora,
Thank you for joining our day tour into Piopiotahi / Milford Sound, and for this fabulous detailed feedback :-)
You take the words right out of our mouth - a visit to Piopiotahi / Milford Sound is special and beautiful no matter the weather. We actually hope for the wetter days so that we can see those magnificient temporary waterfalls cascade down the mountainside. Simply breathtaking!
Thank you for all of your helpful tips to fellow travellers, and for taking the time to share this wonderful review!

We were so excited for this trip as it was so highly recommended. And to a UNESCO heritage site that was not to be missed! Sadly our experience was incredibly disappointing. The bus was packed - which was to be expected- but my wife and I had to split up on the 600km trip as many single riders had taken window seats. Then we quickly discovered that our driver wasn’t a local and spoke broken English which made the tour commentary practically indecipherable. I didn’t think much of that part until later when sharing experiences with people on different buses that absolutely raved about how interesting the information was and how wonderful their driver was. The icing on the cake was on the return trip our driver turned into Mario Andretti passing cars on the winding roads and apparently trying to break some time record. One of the passengers with our trip ended up in the restroom for the majority of the return due to intense motion sickness from all of the weaving. I would highly recommend visiting Milford Sound, but also caution to do your due diligence and use caution before booking.

Kia Ora Justin,
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us.
We are so disappointed that your experience fell so far below the 5* service that we aim to offer, but we appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts.
We take allegations of dangerous driving extremely seriously, and this has been sent to our Coach Operations Manager for their examination. All of our buses are GPS tracked, and we are alerted when the bus travels over 90km, so can check if drivers are driving over this speed.
We hope you enjoy the rest of your Aotearoa New Zealand tour,
Ngā mihi,
Kate

It was a well organized trip from start to finish, our drive from Queenstown to Milford Sound was very smooth from pick up at Frankton Bus Exchange and back! Very timely, once arriving on a cozy and comfortable coach to Milford Sounds, we did not have to wait very long to board our ferry! Had a nice light packed lunch waiting for us and the ferry ride was nice! I highly recommend booking with Pure Milford as our driver stopped at all the 'touristy' spots for a chance for everyone to take pictures on the way there. He was very patient, funny and helpful. Thank you Pure Milford :)

Thank you for joining our excursion to Piopiotahi / Milford Sound, and for this fantastic feedback!
Sounds like everything was just right on your day into Fiordland!
It's a long day, but with so much to see on en route, as well as the spectacular destination, the hours really whizz by :-)
We really appreciate your kind recommendation to others, and hope to see you back in Piopiotahi again soon,

We thoroughly enjoyed the tour to Milford Sound, thanks to a well organized itinerary and our amazing tour guide and driver Nev. He is a true professional - very knowledgeable, providing an impressive amount of information, great sense of humour and very entertaining. It would be a longer trip without Nev’s commentary. He also made a significant effort to look for options for flying from Milford back to Queenstown, which became impossible because of the weather, but he made several calls on our behalf. Finally, Nev is an amazing driver which also made for a better trip. We highly recommend this tour with Altitude Tours and thank Nev for a job well done.

Pure Milford offered an incredible experience during my visit to Milford Sound. Pickup from/drop off at my hotel was very convenient (and I appreciated the slightly later start time, compared to other operators). Brendan was an amazing guide, and broke up the long ride with commentary and jokes. He also worked hard to keep us to schedule, so that we were able to enjoy several bonus photo stops. The cruise was, of course, the major highlight, and the opportunity to explore Milford Sound was one of the best experiences I've had. The included lunch was delicious and generous, and I appreciated that they offered multiple options to cater for different dietary requirements. The cruise operator kept us all laughing, particularly at his Aussie jokes, and also shared interesting commentary that really enhanced the experience. The movie on the ride back was a nice touch and much appreciated to break-up the long trip to Queenstown. This was absolutely one of the highlights of my trip, and I would recommend Pure Milford to anyone looking to experience Milford Sound.

Participated in the Milfond Sound 1-day tour on March 19. The tour guide Brendon was very professional and had a beautiful voice. He explained the whole trip clearly and stopped at 7 scenic spots along the way for tourists to take photos. He managed the time very well and put a cow stuffed doll on the front of the car to help tourists not get on the wrong car.

Excellent day trip all round. Driver Brian entertained us all 4 - 5 hours of the journey there with interesting facts and stories about the area we travelled through. The landscape was beautiful and the cruise itself was stunning. We were lucky to see seals, but too warm for penguins. Despite a bad weather forecast, the weather couldn't have been better, with dramatic clouds forming over and around the mountains and plenty of blue sky. Photo stops along the way broke up the journey nicely. Coach was very comfortable and they even provided a chicken or veggie pie with snacks for lunch on the boat. Overall money well spent for a long day's outing. Would highly recommend.

It is impossible to describe the impact that the Milford Sound has on one, it is spectacular in every respect and should be on everyone's "must see" list.
There are two ways to get to Milford Sound, the first is the expensive option flying in from Queenstown and the other is the lengthy but cheaper option by road, we chose the latter.
It is a four and a half hour road trip, each way, so what better way than in a luxury coach which is part of the tour by the operators, Pure Milford. Our driver was the outstanding Debbie who is not only an excellent driver but also very knowledgeable on local matters and she kept us informed on the way down with her commentary on places of interest and of historical value.
As the photo shows, the cruise boat "Pure Milford" is magnificent and the skipper's ongoing description of the many features and geological aspects of the Milford Sound was very interesting.
The Milford Sound is majestic and spectacular, photos just don't do justice to the grandeur of the place. The mountains bordering the lake are massive and feature an abundance of waterfalls of all sizes which flow into the lake. The two hour cruise took us out into the open ocean and we were lucky to spot two of the elusive Tawaki, or Fiordland Crested Penguins completely out of season, we also saw fur seals basking on some rocks.
The cruise included lunch which comprised several food items appropriate for eating without cutlery.
The trip home was a bit quicker as there was only one stop at te Anau to buy some food or use their restroom. Most passengers on the bus slept, or tried to sleep on the way home.
The organisation of the tour was excellent and although the trip there and back is a lengthy one, it is well worth it once you have experienced the effect that the Milford Sound has on one.
We have no hesitation in recommending Pure Milford as your tour operator.
