About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Andrea M0 contributionsOnce in a lifetime excursionThe scenery was awesome The bikes were in very good condition, even if we all weren't! Mostly level gravel path with only a couple of uphill areas. The Church winery had very tasty Gamay.Written 22 March 2025
- 269carolv0 contributionsGreat bike rideWe really enjoyed our ride from Arrowtown to Queenstown. The ride was easy to navigate and was very scenic. We got the e-bikes which was nice since the route was hilly. Around the Basin made it all easy!Written 11 March 2025
- katemQ5246PX0 contributionsGreat, cruisy trip with beautiful views.Great trip, great staff. We hired an e-bike and were glad we did. It was well maintained and served the purpose well. Beautiful views, easy trails, great directions. Thank you so much.Written 5 March 2025
- Libby E0 contributionsEasy rental and access to trails.Informed and kind staff, decent bikes and easy access to trails made this a fun way to see Queenstown and the surrounding area.Written 4 March 2025
- MongoSchwartz0 contributionsPoor service ruined a great dayIt would be sooooo easy to give this a 5-Star review. But that review would be based on the scenery and the wineries...not the company itself. First, the good: the bikes are in decent shape and they allow you to call at the end of your ride if you want to be picked up somewhere other than the final destination. That was hugely helpful, since we'd been riding and drinking a fair amount of wine, so trying to rush back to an arbitrary assembly point would have been a challenge. But... We stopped by the day before and asked if we could have a map to review that night. Nope. The rather curt counter-person said we could take a picture of the map on the wall, but no paper copy. Alrighty then. When we checked in, the same less-than-nice representative gave us a one-page info sheet (no map), and told us we'd get a map when we arrived at the trailhead. We asked if they had a restroom to use, but, no again, we should find a public toilet somewhere outside. Keep in mind it's a thirty minute drive to the trail head and they want you there well beforehand. So, be prepared. Eventually, we all muster into the van, where the driver says very little. None of your usual informative commentary, just 80s rock on the radio. We arrive and hear the usual amusing/informative banter from the person greeting us, but we notice, hmmm, there's no restroom again. We eventually collect our bikes and helmet (none of which fit on my adult-sized head). There's a pouch on the bike for a water bottle, but, you guessed it, no water is provided, either. But hey, we DID get a map. Off we went. A few other notes.... If you do this ride DEFINITELY get an e-bike. The trail is hilly with lots of loose gravel. It would be a struggle to do it without it. Also, if you do buy any wine, there are no panniers to put your wine in. So bring a backpack. A backpack would also be useful for bringing along, yep, some water, too.Written 3 March 2025
- JimP6920 contributionsHalf Day Ride an Excellent ChoiceA half-day ride by e-bike down into the Gibbston winery area was for us just the right amount of effort, as we neared the end of a very active New Zealand visit. First time on e-bikes, which was a revelation - also downstream, so the effort was limited - past the notorious bungy bridge, a stop to reinforce our lack of enthusiasm for that mad activity - and ended (for us) at the attractive Gibbston winery and a glass of pinot noir before our van ride back to Queenstown. Logistics organizing was smoothly handled - van ride to our meeting point, briefing on the bikes and routing, and meet-up management at the end. Others might reasonably choose either the full-day ride or other appealing and more demanding routes - definitely would endorse using this company.Written 3 March 2025
- teamwalmsley0 contributionsStunning Scenery, Disappointing Service! The bike ride was a nice experience and the shuttle and bike guys were great. However, our experience was overshadowed by a very rude and dismissive customer service agent. She was unwelcoming upon our arrival and rude during the few interactions we had afterward. I have never encountered such an unfriendly and unhelpful customer service representative before. Unfortunately, this tainted our overall enjoyment and experience and as such, we’d be reluctant to use this company again.Written 24 February 2025
- 948angeb0 contributionsStunning SceneryThis self-guided bike/wine tour was fantastic. We went with friends with a couple of us opting for E-bikes which were great. The shuttle from Queenstown to Arrowtown was great with our fantastic driver Jay who was informative, knowledgeable and of course funny! The weather was amazing, Arrowtown was stunning (wish we had more time there!!) I would do this again in a heartbeat :)Written 17 February 2025
- jodimQ9851QC0 contributionsFull day wine ebike tour is a MUSTSpectacular views and ride - a highlight of our trip. Favorite of many bike rides. If you know how to navigate a bike (shifting gears frequently up and down hills while adjusting ebike speed), it's super fun. While i won't ding for one or two people's unfriendly demeanor in the office, it's disappointing when we've done so many tours and everywhere else and staff has been full of fun and energy from the start. These people are in the wrong jobs, and they likely know it as they're not happy. One lady with long hair and pretty bright eyes was super friendly. And yes, a bathroom at the office would be nice. Others say the same.Written 13 February 2025
- 181suzym0 contributionsGreat family trip and really helpful and sensible teamWe had intended to do the full 32km ride but were gently encouraged at check-in to consider one of the shorter less challenging rides. Our son hadn't ridden for a while and as soon as he got on the bike we realised the longer ride would not be possible. The team were super flexible and gave us options and advice. We opted for the shorter route and they picked us up at the agreed spot. My only quibble was that the gears on the bike my son had were too stuff for him to turn them down (he's 6 years old). So we had to stop every time there was a hill and mostly had to walk up the hills, which made for a much longer ride than we'd planned! All in all a good day though.Written 12 February 2025
- Robert L0 contributionsThe Arrowtown to Queenstown bike track is a must do, the scenery changes are amazing! The ride from Arrowtown to Queenstown was amazing, it is a must do. The scenery is ever changing and the ride at points can be a little challenging especially navigating the very high suspension bridges. We stopped for a swim, watched bungee jumping and we all said on future holidays we should investigate bike rides in these locations (def e-bikes). My 4 not 5 star review is the customer experience ad some of the interactions with shop staff was less than impressive. When we arrived and checked in I was glad we got checked in with the staff member I did, I watched and listened to the other staff member who was borderline rude to the guests she was supposed to be serving. We then were collected by the bus driver who was very pleasant and then final before the ride the gentleman who did our safety presentation was excellent, great presenter. We then went off on our ride as we tried to conquer the harder hills (thank god e had the e-bikes) my daughter and I could see my wife struggling a bit. We discussed what gears we used and speed of e-bike with her and off we went again. She was still struggling but we just thought it was user error. About 2/3 of the way my wife & I exchanged bikes and immediately I could see it was not user error but a faulty bike with there seeming to be an issue with the chin/gears. I road the bike with issue most of the way back to Queenstown as my wife was definitely more exhausted then my daughter and myself who had a great experience on our original bikes. On getting back to the office unfortunately we were greeted by the staff member I had seen provide poor service in the morning, on advising her we had issues with the chain, she was completely uninterested and dismissive and changed the subject to focusing on us returning our helmets to the rack. So as I said the ride is a must but the customer experience is a bit 50/50!Written 3 February 2025
- Adam D0 contributionsGreat way to exploreHired e bikes as a family of four to do the Arrowtown to Arthurs Point ride. Driven to Arrowtown where we were given our bikes and clear directions. Had plenty of time to explore Arrowtown before setting off. E bikes meant we all stayed together regardless of riding ability. It also meant we got to our pick up way in advance so decided to extend our cycle back into Queenstown. Great day out on the trails!Written 16 January 2025
- NCHKCA0 contributionsSharing details I couldn’t find in advanceSharing details I couldn’t find in advance…The 21-mile route that starts in Arrowtown follows the Arrow River Bridges trail, then turns onto the Twin Rivers Trail, and finally the Frankton track by waterfront near the airport, on down to downtown. There were 2-3 short segments on country lanes used by cars, but I never encountered a car. No restrooms at check-in shop in CBD, and in Arrowtown you have to go away from the trail entrance a bit to find the public toilets. The quality of the trail is pretty much as advertised, almost all groomed gravel. There are many hairpin turns to watch out for. I went on a sunny day, but wish I had brought sunglasses that transmitted more light, as you’re often in the shade while you’re navigating turns and such. My e-bike was a light duty mountain bike with front suspension only and a slightly cushy seat. The power was good - 3 levels - I used level 1 almost all the way, and level 2 only for a few of the steep hills. I am not a super-serious biker and almost always ride on roads - but I was able to do this trail in 1.5 hours (plus one brief water break stop). This trail requires enough attention that you aren’t seeing the scenery very much - so I could see dedicating more time to the ride if you want to stop more often and take in the scenery. The whole thing is a great value for the money. It’s a great ride - enjoy!Written 12 January 2025
- Departure5383690 contributionsFriendly mini bus Transfers from Queenstown to winery area; visited 4 wineries for tastings/food, whilst riding e-bikes!Loved the whole experience! Very well organised so the transfers went smoothly and the ride was fairly flat so we could have been on any type of bike. Wineries were lovely - surroundings, food and wine were all very much enjoyed!Written 15 December 2024
- 512sharleanm0 contributionsExcellent day out e-biking the region!Am amazing day! It has been a highlight of our trip! The views were spectacular from the start to the finish! From the booking to the check in process, to being dropped off to our pick up! The bikes were excellent and the winery recommendations were awesome! Would highly recommend this to everyone!Written 4 December 2024

We were able to move our reservation up a day due to predicted rain. The e-bike upgrade was very reasonable also and we were able to make the 60k loop to Arrowtown and back during the day ride. Manager of shop was very pleasant and accommodating before and after our ride. Strongly recommend.

Brilliant fun, thought 3/4 of a day would be enough, but would did less that 1/2 the wineries and would love to have biked more and then drank more!
The whole meet at the shop, van ride to bike collection point, and the comprehensive safety brief were all well run and co-ordinated. Then we were off. Following the very clearly marked bike path, Criss crossing the river at times, the weather was perfect, the bikes were smooth and well maintained. We managed 4 wineries inc lunch but the day gets away with you for sure. If I'd had another day I would have done this again to get to some other venues. Have to peddle faster and drink faster or less maybe?
We got the collection point, the bikes were loaded for us and all too soon it was back in the van trundling back to QT, full of tales of differnent wines whilst comparing overall speed and distance data on our phones, ever competitive!

Pick up and drop off from central Queenstown makes this experience easy. After heading out to pick up our bikes, we were shown how to use the ebikes and given instructions to send us on our way. The ride is decent, some steep edges and narrow paths but decent quality the whole way. Important to note: there is a suspension bridge and its a decent height that may be difficult for people with any fear of heights or falling. Once you get to the winery areas there is plenty of options. Would recommend taking yourself a backpack if you plan on buying any wines whilst out.

Great service from the moment we booked until we were picked up at the end of the tour. What a nice way to spend a day, cycling amongst such cool scenery and such different vineyards.
We're glad we upgraded to ebikes, it'd be a bit tough on the legs using standard bikes.
A little hillier than we had anticipated, but it was our first time cycling in a few years.

Thanks AlistarW pleased to hear you had a great day out biking with us. E-bike upgrades are a fantastic option and no-one has ever regretted it - especially as we live in the mountains. Cheers the Around The Basin team.

This was a really fun day! The service provided by Around the Basin was super. Especially the last minute scheduling change. You meet downtown and they bus you out towards Arrowtown , then fit your bike and safety talk. Give you the map and you're on your way. With the 3/4 day, we biked up to Arrowtown and had coffee. Highly recommend this as it was the most beautiful part of the ride and shaded. Then returned and started the winery tour in Gibbston Valley. Great wineries and beautiful views into the river canyon. You really don't need the E-Bike, but they made it lots of FUN! Highly recommend!

Hi Imapepper79 - great to hear you enjoyed our Bike The Wineries 3/4 Day Ride.
We do offer a Bike The Wineries full day ride that starts a little earlier and begins in Arrowtown - a great option if you want to see Arrowtown and have a coffee pre-ride. It was great you opted to bike to Arrowtown and back to the ride start point, but for some people the extra 12kms can means more ride time - less wine time :)
Cheers and lovely to hear you had so much FUN!

This was a top notch operation. We did the 3/4 day winery tour which we thought was a good balance of biking and wine tasting. We also took the e-bike option which made the day less taxing and allowed us to get to more places.
The information at drop off was good, the staff were really friendly and helpful and picked up our wines from the wineries and us from our finishing winery.
The trail is a fun, safe trail that is good for all levels of riding. You can visit as many or as few wineries as you like.

From beginning to end, it was a great trip. The pickup in Queenstown went well. The bikes were easy to operate. We stopped at the new Church winery, which is at the end of the trail. We were served some good wine and had great food enjoyed in an uncrowded peaceful setting. Josh picked us up on time and took care of the bikes. All we had to do was enjoy the trip.

You really don’t need the 3/4 day. 1/2 day is plenty. You also really don’t need an e-bike . It’s easily doable on a regular mountain bike. Beautiful scenery and good wine.

On our half day winery ride you will get to about 3 wineries maximum. With our 3/4 day option that you chose, there is a little more riding and you should have time to get to 3 - 4 wineries plus have time to enjoy lunch somewhere. In general most people comment that they wish they had more time but good to hear you had ample time even riding on regular bikes. Cheers for the review.
