One Tour to Rule them all
We did a LOTR tour with Vicky because hubby is a fan (of LOTR, though we thought Vicky was awesome too 😉). Even though I am a LOTR novice, I thoroughly enjoyed the stream of anecdotes from the making of the movies, and getting to see the scenery was fantastic. A great way to see beyond the Queenstown city centre, and dressing up was a hoot too. Thanks, Vicky, for a fantastic experience!

      Best Lotr tour in NZ
From the moment we boarded this tour I was impressed!!! Within minutes we had left Queesntown and our guide Vicky’s commentary was on amazing discussing all thing related to the filming of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings. I’m a huge fan and thought I knew everything about these movies but I was wrong these guys know their stuff and even when I came home and googles the information they were spot on. The filming locations we visited in this 4hr tour were some of the most beautiful spots I’d visited in the South Island. This company has exclusive access to Arcadia Station in the Paradise valley were you get to stand at the exact locations they built the set for Beorns house from the Hobbit and Isengard from the Lotr plus many other movies, this was by far my favourite filming location we visited on the tour. When you are at this private property you actually get to see all the other lotr tours parked about 2kms away only wishing they were at this spot, you definitely feel privileged to be in this tour. This tour is amazing value on all aspects and I feel is the best tour to choose if you are into learning about Middle Earth, nature, history and the filmmaking that has taken place in the area. 10/10 Pure Glenorchy.!!!!

      Rainy day but still nice
Nice tour. Would have been better if it wasn’t raining. But was able to see many filming locations and the drive through the amazing countryside was great.

Fascinating and beautiful New Zealand LITR scenery tour
Our tour guide Vicky really brought this tour to life because she was able to explain some behind the scenes info about the movie making. Even if we weren't crazy fans of the books and the movies (we are) this would still be great just for the beautiful scenery and interesting descriptions of the mountains, trees, and lakes. The costume and sword picture-taking session in the woods of "Lothlorian" was more fun than I expected it to be. Vicky was able to hold our interest the whole time with stories and descriptions of how the movie used the beautiful geology of New Zealand to create Middle Earth. This company also had access to some private land for the tour which makes it quite unique. I would highly recommend this tour company.

      Excellent LOTR tour
Awesome tour! Francesco was a fantastic guide, and a true Tolkien fan. Pure Glenorchy gets exclusive access to a farm with an INCREDIBLE view and a Hobbit filming location. Had a blast dressing up and swinging swords in Lothlorien!

Shane really makes this LOTR tour, amazing!
Our guide, Shane really made this tour so interesting and fun. He knew all the great tidbits that you don’t typically hear about, was warm, friendly and funny. He took us to where Frodo/Sam/Gollum saw the Oliphaunts, to Isengard, and to the forest where Boromir met his fate. We got to dress up in character. The drive was spectacular. Especially as you get closer to the southern alps in Mount Aspiring. I highly recommend this tour and count yourself lucky if you get Shane as your guide.

Beautiful views of southern alps/New Zealand countryside
Overall great experience and great weather. The guide Tammy took us from Queenstown to mt cook, she did a great job guiding us and giving us tour information, plus had a great choice in music! Shane also guided us from mt cook to Christchurch in a timely manner, he taught us much about the geology of the region including how the rock flour is what contributes to the blue color of lake tekapo. He also guided us in a timely manner and kept level headed, especially due to issues we had with the vehicle stalling and due to a personal event he had so kudos! Overall very happy with the tour and both guides. My only comment is would it be possible to extend the tour duration 0.5- 1 hour longer? The walk at mt cook is beautiful and takes 3 hours to walk to and from. We had 3 hours to complete this, so I think building in that 0.5-1 hour into that stop would help allow us to walk at a slightly more leisurely pace. We were able to complete the walk and it was manageable, but we had to walk at a faster pace and only stopped briefly at the viewpoint to take pictures.

      Loved it!
We just got off this tour. Amazing! Shane was super knowledgeable about Lord of the Rings as well as the fauna, geography, and culture of New Zealand in general and the Queenstown area in particular. We visited multiple LOTR filming locations and Shane had still shots from the films to help us visualize how the scenery related to the films. A definite must do.

Dan, our guide, was knowledgable, friendly, kind, and funny. Really kept on top of making sure everyone was well looked after. Plenty of stops at locations and services, and the the time we were in the van passed quickly, with Dan giving us lots of information and stories about what we were seeing. Lots of props and costumes to enhance photos and the day, but absolutely no pressure to use them if you don’t want.

      Great LOTR tour in Glenorchy
We visited plenty of of LOTR movie locations and Shane also pointed out the locations for some of other movies like Wolverine Xmen, Mission Impossible, etc. best part is we get to dress up and take pictures in the Lothlorien forest. Thanks Shane for the wonderful experience and for geeking/nerding with us fans of LOTR. Lovely company too meeting the other 2 guests from Melbourne.

Queenstown based tours are more heavenly than one can imagine. On the way to Glenorchy we come across the million dollar scene of the mountains and the blue water lake. You can spend a whole day photographing in Glenorchy. As we go to explore the various spots where 'Lord of the Rings' cinema was shot you get to reach Paradise too, a truely remarkable spot aptly named so. Over all experience was excellent.

Have been thru Glenorchy on previous trips but was unaware of the filming sites of my favorite Lord of the Rings. Our tour guide Ben was very informative and we had an awesome time watching fellow tourists dress up and participate in role playing some of the scenes. Thank you for the scenic tour to Paradise and back.

From the booking- the communication with Kate was punctual and she fit us in on our preferred day and time. Ben greeted us and with a short introduction we were off to collect the other fellowship members for the day. He had LOTR enthusiastic commentary and punctual lines from the movie. indeed a true LOTR fan. As a local I have walked, picked up rocks and stared off into these scenic LOTR scenes many times not actually knowing the same spots were where Peter Jackson saw his vision. Pleasantly surprised and full of smiles. Great half day out with my visiting mother and a small group. Ben encouraged all to take time recreating the scenes, to help take photos and of course play dress up. Recommend for locals and tourists. oh the the morning tea was delightful!

I am writing yet another review here because I was not able to find a reply button to your comment on Bookme.

No, I was not late on the day of the tour. In fact, I was there five minutes earlier than our pick-up time and the guide even thanked us (me and the Taiwanese family) for being on time and making his job easier. My pick-up site was Shotover Steet and it was the very first pick up place so I made sure I got there early. I also did not wander around during the picnic and make everybody wait. I do not even know how you came up with that idea. I am not that kind of a person and I was always around the group during the group activity. This is truly outrageous.

Just because I left a negative feedback, it does not mean that you can write a comment full of lies. I am beginning to wonder if this is how you respond to all of your below 5* feedback. If you do remember me as clearly as you think, I am the one who carried an action camera around the whole day. I recorded everything with timestamp, including me saying hi to you “before” the scheduled meeting time and me being the first one to board the van after the picnic. And let’s just say that I was that extremely obnoxious tourist who had no sense of time as you were so subtlety trying to imply in your comment. Does that really justify your manners and how I felt for the entire duration of the trip?

Finally, the only reason I decided to leave a review two months after the trip is because I saw the e-mail from Bookme late. I left all of my other tour reviews only last week as well, but thanks for your concern.

You are right. You are No. 1 Glenorchy tour company, and that’s why I chose your tour, but it is also exactly the reason I believe that everyone else deserves to know what happened to “some” of the people who did not quite enjoy it.

Like previous reviews have said, this tour is great whether you are or are not a LOTR fan. Ben was a terrific guide. The scenery is beautiful the info on fauna, the gold prospecting, and general history of the region very interesting. The chance to allow everyone’s inner child to emerge for 15 mins or so, in LOTR costumes, to play act is such fun. If you don’t want to act yourself, there will be others who will amuse you highly with their antics! Those who have seen Top Of The Lake and Wolverine will also appreciate sites you will recognise. The homemade morning tea is a nice touch. Thanks Ben for a great morning

We booked this tour as it was recommended by the staff at iSight - the tourist info’ place. The recommendation was more than justified. Our guide and driver was Dan, who was very knowledgable and informative not only about the LOR element, but about other movies, flora, fauna and geography/ geology. The weather was great, which always helps on a tour of this nature, but we had a great time and would recommend this trip to others.

Thanks Joel! This tour was the highlight of our time in Queenstown! The tour was jam packed with great LOTR's locations, breathtaking photo opportunities and some delicious snacks in Glenorchy. My girlfriend is a die hard LOTR's fan and thoroughly enjoyed Joel's LOTR's anecdotes during the tour. I myself have only seen a couple of the movies and was blown away by the incredible scenery that Glenorchy and 'Paradise' had to offer. All in all a wonderful morning!

When I was searching for tours to Glenorchy, a month before our trip to Queenstown, I already saw this but hesitated to book as I thought it is a bit expensive. I booked it last minute. Guess what? it was all worth it! Joel is a fun and friendly tour guide. The scenic views are surreal! Even if you are not a big fan of LOTR, you will still enjoy the tour. You will want to watch LOTR again or if you haven't seen it yet, you will want to watch it after the tour.

Trip started at 13:30 with a choice of pickup points in Queenstown, dependant upon your hotel.

Journey to Middle Earth began by heading towards Glenorchy with a stop on the way to point out a series of filming locations.

Onwards to Glenorchy for a tea / coffee / snack break with a toilet break.

Heading into the depths of Middle Earth, with an unexpected stop to look at flowers…. Well, had to be done :-)

Arrived into an area where only Pure Glenorchy have access too see more filming spots for LOTR as well as other well known movies. Swords, clothing and Gandalf’s staff were available for people to don and have pictures taken

Joel gave an excellent commentary with pertinent facts along with enough comedy to keep the commentary sounding fresh (A difficult talent to master on a repetitive commentary)

Highly recommend this trip for any LOTR fan

I had an impromptu tour in Queenstown and glad to found Pure Glenorchy as most of the LOTR tours only runs in the afternoon. Kate (who processed my booking) and Joe (our tour guide) were so warm and accomodating.

Tour was not just about LOTR but Joe also discussed some history and details on each places that we’ve went to.

So happy to be on the exact same place where the movie was filmed with few behind the scenes info. It’s really worth the price! I think they are the only ones who do the 4hr tour and the others are just 2hrs that’s why it’s really worth it.
