      Only word is "excellent"
We got lucky - it rained during the night (and at Milford on the day) so all the waterfalls were in full flight. Tania picked us up and took us for the trip to Milford and back. She was great - a real asset to the company - and her scones (which she got from a local business) were excellent. Kept us amused with her stories (she kept threatening to go quiet but never quite managed it!). The cruise was great - we all got wet but that's par for the course if you want the waterfalls. The skipper nosed in to one waterfall and confessed that the people on the deck he considered to be "targets" rather than passengers as he tried to get as many drenched as possible. Lovely cruise, lots to see, and the bus trip back was again a non-stop commentary from Tania. Loved it all and would be happy to do it again. Thanks Tania

      Stunning and not to miss
The boat trip was awesome and the scenery simply stunning. Can see why it is called the 8th wonder of the world. The underwater observatory is fascinating and well worth a visit too. If you are visiting the area you must visit Milford sound. Only negatives. Expensive parking and pretty mediocre cafe which could be greatly improved.

      Sonia - best driver ever
Our experience was made special due to our driver, Sonia. Sonia was friendly, helpful and made our trip enjoyable. She was also a safe driver, which was important to us for such a long journey (Queenstown > Milford Sound > Queenstown). Would recommend Southern Discoveries solely based on our interactions with Sonia. We look forward to visiting again

      Great cruise with bonus dolphins
The cruise was excellent and ran really smoothly. Amazing views and helpful commentary. Really enjoyed the observatory but my highlight was the two close up experiences with dolphins. #SDShareandWin #SouthernDiscoveries.

      8th wonder if the world!!
This trip was worth every cent! It's a fairly long trip to-from Milford sound but the lovely on board commentary & stories from our driver made it very enjoyable! (I wish I remembered the driver's name!). The boat cruise was stunning! And the buffet lunch was delicious (shout out to who ever cooked the beef cheeks! 10/10). We were lucky enough to see some dolphins & seals on our way back. Also scored an upgrade to the underwater Observatory which was so cool! The team there were very knowledgeable and friendly :) overall, just an amazing experience! Would highly recommend!!!

      Top Notch Tour
Southern Discoveries runs a top notch tour which is well organized and seamless. Our driver and guide Chris, was informative and pleasant, giving pertinent information without talking too much. And the scenery was spectacular. Lunch was simple but very fresh and tasty.

      M have done better!
Our bus tour guide was great and very knowledgeable along our drive. He knew of the right stops to go to and how best to avoid large crowds. The cruise was equally as wonderful, with brunch and scenery just as lovely. I enjoy driving but sometimes it’s nice not to have to deal with the hustle/bustle😉

Really quite marvellous Milford Sound with Greg
We had an unforgettable day with Discovery Tours to Milford Sound in New Zealand! Greg, our incredible tour operator, shared captivating insights into the local environment, culture, and history with some personal stories thrown in to the mix too. We appreciated being shown the sights by a true local & not some clown from Auckland - which we are reliably informed is not a proper city. We were mesmerized by the awe-inspiring beauty and wonder of it all. Lunch was okay too. Thank you for an amazing experience! 🌿🌄 #MilfordSound #NewZealand #DiscoveryTours"

      Exception support on after hours
I had a good experience with southern discoveries. Generally journeys is good and we enjoyed the visit. They have different types of cruises running on different times. We got the larger cruise which left at 1.15 . It had the lunch buffet. Ship at has a cafe in it. I booked the journey on a Wednesday and I wanted to change the booking to Tuesday on Monday night. When I ring them around 6.30pm, they answered the phone and helped me to change the booking. I believe this is a good customers services and really appreciate that.

      Absolutely brilliant, a must do!!
This trip was well worth the money. The cruise itself is beautiful. You get so close up to the waterfall you can feel the water spray. It was so calm and flat you did not notice you were on a boat, and I get motion sickness but not on this trip. The underwater discovery is wonderful. There are 60 steps to get down to it but once down there is is beautiful. Seeing the coral and fish in their natural habitat. We were lucky enough to see a seal chasing mackerel. Would I do it again? Most definitely!!!!

      Highlight of my holiday!
Absolutely loved the cruise and kayak. We got really lucky with the weather so the views were unreal. Some good info on the cruise about the waterfalls + land. Definetely recomend doing the kayak tour- a great way to get close to the water and wildlife and take in the surroundings peacefully + quietly. Our kayak guide Byron was incredibly nice, knowledgable and helpful. Beautiful area!

      Best experience - Milford Sound
Departing Queenstown our driver Gabrielle was warm in his approach and his driving was impeccable - I felt so safe and great commentary - very informative. Milford Sound - driving in - speechless, the cruise was world class, and the buffet lunch was amazing. I didn't want to leave and will be planning a return trip to do it all again. And this is from a New Zealander!!

      Unreliable and disingenuous
Do not, and I repeat, do not book a tour with Southern Discoveries. They are unreliable and disingenuous. My family and I were looking forward to the Milford Sound tour being the highlight of our trip to NZ. Several days prior to the trip, Southern Discoveries sent us a confirmation email complete with a confirmation number and pick-up instructions. Then, 18 hours before departure, they cancelled the trip -- leaving us scrambling to fill our final day in NZ.

From start to finish, this tour was disorganized. There was so much miscommunication between the third party that they used to attract customers and their actual website. Unfortunately, this company fails to warn buyers on these third-party sites of the possibility that the flight back will be canceled if enough individuals are booked to make it financially beneficial. The flight was "canceled" because of the "weather not being suitable to fly the plane," but in the same breath, tried to sell me a helicopter ride back for 995 NZd (~650 USD). No problem with this tactic as it is a business, but the lack of transparency is a serious issue as it displays a lack of respect for patrons' time and money. Otherwise, you are stuck riding a 5-hour bus ride back to Queenstown, looking at the same sites you did on the way up there. Did not get back to 8:30 pm when most of the other activities are long closed. Moreover, they don't offer a breakdown of how much will be returned if this happens. Therefore, they can choose to return whatever amount they deem suitable for them. Very disappointing day better off doing a shorter tour with someone else.

Kia ora Onna Thanks for the feedback, here and on other sites as well as direct. As discussed, your flight was cancelled from Milford Sound due to safety - our top priority. The parameters for helicopters are different to fixed-wing aircraft, and you are quite right that this was an option offered to you on the day. Unfortunately, if it is not safe to fly we are unable to offer that service. All collateral our end and on all third party sites highlights the weather dependency of this product, and I apologise if the third party site you utilised was not clear on this. In terms of a refund, customers are refunded the difference between the coach/cruise/coach and the fly/cruise/fly - as you booked through a third party site there may have been a different refund policy that we are not privy to. I hope you enjoyed the rest of your tour through NZ. Kind regards Kerry

Absolutely incredible. From the coach ride up with an amazing driver (Brad) who made the 4+ Hour drive enjoyable & informative, to an amazing cruise, topped off with a scenic helicopter back home and landing on a glacier? Words can’t describe how amazing the day was. This is a MUST DO!

This was our last big excursion of our trip to New Zealand from US. Our driver over on the coach, Shayle, was excellent. Very knowledgeable and it was easy to understand his instructions and details. He took good care of us. The fly back was just breathtakingly beautiful-I highly recommend going back this way. The eight seater plane was operated by Emma at Air Milford. She explained what we were seeing and the aerial view-I was awestruck by the beauty.

We were very satisfied with our day trip to Milford Sound. Southern Discoveries picked us up from our apartment in the morning to our coach. The coach was comfortable, airconditioned, with glass roof ceilings just like in the photos. The bus driver/tour guide was very skillful, informative and had some funny stories to keep us awake. The cruise was great too, spacious and not too crowded. The views of course were amazing. But the highlight of our tour was the flyback home with Milford Air. We had a lovely pilot. It was safe and definitely worth it. Not just because its only 40 minutes back to Queenstown but we had the most amazing views from above. We were a family of 7 with kids youngest 5 yo and the eldest 15 yo, so this combination was great for us. And they even shuttled us back to our apartment afterwards.

Upon the cancellation of my flight back from Milford Sound, I was assured that a refund would be processed. I provided my card details on November 21st for the refund. The company claimed to have processed the refund on November 22nd but failed to provide any transaction number or solid proof of the transaction.

After a 10-day waiting period with no refund appearing in my account, I contacted Southern Discoveries again. They provided only a screenshot of the refund transaction with an internal terminal ID and the last four digits of my card, yet no refund was received on my end. This prompted me to raise a dispute with my travel card company, Wise, but even after 15 days, there was no resolution or substantial update from their side.

As a customer living in Melbourne, Australia, physically approaching Southern Discoveries' office is not feasible. The lack of clear communication, transparency, and prompt resolution has made this experience extremely frustrating. I am still waiting for a proper resolution and feel left in the dark regarding my refund.

I am sharing this experience to alert potential customers of the challenges that may arise, especially regarding refunds and customer service responsiveness. I hope this issue gets resolved soon, and better practices are put in place to handle similar situations in the future.

Wow, we truly had the very best day and I’m not sure if anything will ever top it. Keith was a wonderful driver/ guide. He has a soothing, calm tone and a whole heap of knowledge. Although the bus ride was long, it never felt it. We had a few stops along the way for bathroom, coffee, and photo opportunities. Keith went out of his way to make the journey enjoyable. The boat ride was also delightful and it certainly helps that we had stunning weather (winter sunshine).
What made an already great day even more wonderful was the scenic flight back to Queenstown. Our pilot, Ryan, was excellent. We took off from Milford Sound and journeyed through the Fiord National Park. My face hurt from smiling. It was stunning and an experience I will never forget. Thank you.

Stunning views, entertaining commentary. We had snow almost all the way there and back but clear for our boat trip. Felt completely safe in the hands of our driver, Gabe.

What an adventure. Worth the money to do this! The views and experiences were one of a kind! The bus ride is long from Queenstown. Very nice breakfast stop along the route. The cruise could be a little longer. Boxed lunches onboard the cruise were very good! The flight back to Queenstown was amazing!

We had an amazing time on the Milford coach, cruise and flight. Brad was an amazing tour guide, we learned so much on the way to Milford. We got a sunny day on the water, even though there wasn't as many waterfalls, we saw seals and got some epic photos. The flight back is a must do!!
