      Amazing Kayaking and Tour Guide!
We did the kayak tour in Milford Sound, our tour guide Kaitlyn was amazing and so so passionate and knowledgeable about the area and New Zealand on the whole. We got an amazing weather day and the views were spectacular. The underwater observatory is also incredible, don’t miss this!

      Only word is "excellent"
We got lucky - it rained during the night (and at Milford on the day) so all the waterfalls were in full flight. Tania picked us up and took us for the trip to Milford and back. She was great - a real asset to the company - and her scones (which she got from a local business) were excellent. Kept us amused with her stories (she kept threatening to go quiet but never quite managed it!). The cruise was great - we all got wet but that's par for the course if you want the waterfalls. The skipper nosed in to one waterfall and confessed that the people on the deck he considered to be "targets" rather than passengers as he tried to get as many drenched as possible. Lovely cruise, lots to see, and the bus trip back was again a non-stop commentary from Tania. Loved it all and would be happy to do it again. Thanks Tania

Cancelled flight due to weather, no refund
When the flight is cancelled and have to spend extra 2 hours getting home in a bus, you will only get refunded $350 for 2 person, making the coach and cruise to be about $350 per person. Contacted them several times, they said that they told Expedia to refund, but nonetheless I still did not get refund for the flight portion. I will never ever use them again and will caution fellow travelers of using them. I understand flight is weather dependent. But refund the money when flight can’t take off.

      Stunning and not to miss
The boat trip was awesome and the scenery simply stunning. Can see why it is called the 8th wonder of the world. The underwater observatory is fascinating and well worth a visit too. If you are visiting the area you must visit Milford sound. Only negatives. Expensive parking and pretty mediocre cafe which could be greatly improved.

      Great cruise with bonus dolphins
The cruise was excellent and ran really smoothly. Amazing views and helpful commentary. Really enjoyed the observatory but my highlight was the two close up experiences with dolphins. #SDShareandWin #SouthernDiscoveries.

      Top Notch Tour
Southern Discoveries runs a top notch tour which is well organized and seamless. Our driver and guide Chris, was informative and pleasant, giving pertinent information without talking too much. And the scenery was spectacular. Lunch was simple but very fresh and tasty.

      M have done better!
Our bus tour guide was great and very knowledgeable along our drive. He knew of the right stops to go to and how best to avoid large crowds. The cruise was equally as wonderful, with brunch and scenery just as lovely. I enjoy driving but sometimes it’s nice not to have to deal with the hustle/bustle😉

      Absolutely brilliant, a must do!!
This trip was well worth the money. The cruise itself is beautiful. You get so close up to the waterfall you can feel the water spray. It was so calm and flat you did not notice you were on a boat, and I get motion sickness but not on this trip. The underwater discovery is wonderful. There are 60 steps to get down to it but once down there is is beautiful. Seeing the coral and fish in their natural habitat. We were lucky enough to see a seal chasing mackerel. Would I do it again? Most definitely!!!!

      Highlight of my holiday!
Absolutely loved the cruise and kayak. We got really lucky with the weather so the views were unreal. Some good info on the cruise about the waterfalls + land. Definetely recomend doing the kayak tour- a great way to get close to the water and wildlife and take in the surroundings peacefully + quietly. Our kayak guide Byron was incredibly nice, knowledgable and helpful. Beautiful area!

      Unreliable and disingenuous
Do not, and I repeat, do not book a tour with Southern Discoveries. They are unreliable and disingenuous. My family and I were looking forward to the Milford Sound tour being the highlight of our trip to NZ. Several days prior to the trip, Southern Discoveries sent us a confirmation email complete with a confirmation number and pick-up instructions. Then, 18 hours before departure, they cancelled the trip -- leaving us scrambling to fill our final day in NZ.

      Milford "cruise"
Coach driver Chris was great, knowledgeable and great dry sense of humour.he gets 5/5. Boat trip OK. Downsides - couldn't hear commentary on top deck. 4 loos in total not nearly enough for 450 people. People were fighting over seats, families were split up to eat. Once you found a seat, you had yo leave it to get your food. So the first 10 minutes were finding a seat. Then 20 mins queuing for the buffet the 20 minutes eating. So missed nearly half of the sights that we'd come to see.

      Great tour - fair price!
We were extremely happy with the "Milford Sound Discover More Cruise" we booked - you get a lovely view over the sounds as well as a short trip to the underwater observatorium, where you can see black corals. FYI: As expected, there were lots of other tourists as well.

A great way to see Milford Sound and surrounding area, without the stress of driving
The bus ride made timely stops for photo opportunities and restrooms, and our driver, Keith, was very entertaining and knowledgeable about New Zealand, as well as safe and conscientious. The boat was also a wonderful experience with incredible scenery and helpful staff and captain. We loved the entire experience!

Going to Milford Sound was an incredible experience and I would highly recommend it for the majestic scenery. However, I would not recommend booking with southern discoveries if you are going to be driven by Greg. He ruined the bus ride (which all together is about 11 hours) with his arrogance, misogyny, racism and politics.

He went on multiple inappropriate rants about various things including a rant over the microphone about the closure of the Tiwai smelter. He also made disparaging comments about previous customers, all who just happened to be women including describing customers he wanted to ‘throttle’. He went on about customers from different countries and made unprofessional and unnecessary comments.

The commentary was non-stop, painful and extremely unprofessional. A good bus driver should be non-judgemental, professional and be able to pronounce correctly māori names- this should all be part of our experience of New Zealand culture.

However, the bus itself was very comfy and we enjoyed its big windows including on the roof. The cruise was also good and the lunch was algood.

Really gutted that our experience was tainted by Greg’s unprofessionalism.

Such a great day! Great driver who has a vast amount of knowledge, the use of Te Reo was awesome for myself as i am Maori and it is so great listening to some of the stories my ancestors experienced. We stopped at a few places for photo opportunities and we are so blessed for such a beautiful country. The bus was cosy enough for a bus, nothing too great except for the views and the big windows to see the view - we sat up the front but we realised if we hadnt bought the extra "front seat" option, it wouldnt have mattered at all. The catamaran was great, clean toilets, great amazing staff, opportunity to buy hot food and snacks on board at a reasonable price that you could expect on a voyage like this. I dont have anything to complain about with this crew - i would go through them again in a heartbeat!

The journey to and from Milford Sound was both exhilarating and entertaining. Greg’s golden commentary and profound knowledge of the South was an enlightening experience. It made what could have been a long coach trip very quick and enjoyable. Every twist and turn revealed an authentic piece of New Zealand culture.

Greg went above and beyond by ensuring that we had a way back to Queenstown, as we were unable to book a scenic flight to Queenstown from Milford Sound.

We had a golden day on the cruise itself, where there was no sign of rain and we were able to enjoy Milford Sound in a way that is not commonly known for this place. Commentary on board the cruise was informative and the scenery truly justified why it is a wonder if the world.

Packed lunch included for an additional $20 pp was generous.

    Highly recommend Southern Discoveries.

What a wonderful tour that we had yesterday, besides the magnificent sceneries and how beautiful this part of South Island is, I think Southern Discoveries’ little touches and outstanding service and hospitality has left a great lasting impression on my group.

From our driver Gabriel who threw in so much valuable information and knowledge about the region and where we went past, detailed explanations on names of places, and stories about recent events and their impacts on the region - to our guide on the cruise (whose name I cannot remember sorry) , again with wise knowledge about Milford Sounds and a cheeky sense of humour!

I visit Queenstown often every year to snowboard but never took the opportunity to explore more than the ski fields and boy am I happy that I had booked myself this tour. The places that we went to were just breathtaking. I might be bias to say the snow made it look 10 times better! ( but that is because I’m a not summer and sun person ).

But yes it really was the staff that elevated our experience and we were very thankful. Worth mentioning that the taxi that was supposed to pick us up in the morning was a few minutes late (which did not bother us AT ALL, we were enjoying the morning view from our hotel) - but southern discoveries went above and beyond and left us a sorry gift at our hotel which we only found out after arriving back in the evening. We could not believe it and were very touched by the gesture.

You’ve heard it all before, support local businesses. And it is still important to do so! Keep these tours and travel companies running for us and New Zealand’s future. Would love to come back with my little ones in the future for them to experience what we did. Thanks again Southern Discoveries!

We had the best day ever travelling from Te Anau to Milford Sound & back. Greg our driver, was the perfect balance of getting us safely and smoothly to and from our destination as well as entertaining 50 odd people with his absolutely hilarious commentary and comments. It made a long what could have been boring coach trip very quick and fun! Instructions of what to do and what not to do you were very clear and concise and the whole thing from go to Lowe was smooth /simple /easy completely stressed free. The cruise itself was excellent , extremely informative commentary was very interesting facts about the area both geologically and the history. I would highly recommend southern discoveries and we plan to do it all again in the future with our kids. Excellent!!

This was such an enjoyable experience! The nature and scenery is stunning and unique of course, and the Southern Discoveries service made a real difference. The tour felt like the 'premier option' for visiting Milford Sound from Queenstown, and it was very well organised. E.g we got on the coach at an intermediate stop just outside of central Queenstown - but it was clear that an effort had been made to keep seats available for people joining the coach after it departed central Queenstown. The coach itself was comfortable, and the driver was fantastic - he had very insightful commentary during the drive, delivered with great style, including a good dose of humour. The cruise in Milford Sound was great - the boat was modern and in good condition. The buffet lunch on board was very tasty, and I would strongly recommend including that option when buying tickets, because we were hungry by the time lunch came around and the quality of the lunch made a real difference to how we enjoyed the cruise (the buffet seems like a much better option that getting a lunch box with a sandwich, and there aren't really any other options for eating). Highly recommended, and I'll likely do it again one day!

My first time to Queenstown and so happy I choose this tour. Our coach driver was fun, informative and enthusiastic. I booked a premium seat so was able to video amazing scenery along the way. We stopped at a number of sites allowing us to take lots of pictures. The mirror lake was a site to behold. It had snowed the night before so the mountains were an amazing site. We spotted a kea and stopped to watch and film the antics of this funny bird. I enjoyed drinking glacier water straight from the river. The travel through the Homer Tunnel was amazing as well as hearing the history of it. The boat ride on Milford sound was breathtaking. It was wet, windy and misty which didn't matter as it added to the mystique of this amazing place. So many waterfalls to view. I can highly recommend this trip to everyone.

Thanks so much for this great review. We're so happy you had a great trip with us, those premium seats are definitely worth it to get the best views out the front of the coach. Milford on a misty wet day is pretty special. Hopefully we'll see you on a trip again. Nga mihi

If you are worried about the long day (5hr bus trip each way), don’t…It is absolutely worth it! Our bus driver (Keith) was amazing - his commentary on the way was very informative and he stopped many times on the way for bathroom breaks, photo opportunities and leg-stretching. We were very lucky to get active snow fall near Milford Sound and Keith stopped the bus to let us all jump out and have a play - it was magical! Milford sound itself is just breathtaking. The whole day is the highlight of our trip to Queenstown. We were here in early August and I strongly recommend dressing warm (even for the bus). If you have an extra coat to bring for over your legs on the bus, I recommend it.

This tour is highly recommended! From booking our tour at the Queenstown office where the staff were very helpful and knowledgeable, to the moment we boarded the bus we knew that this tour was shaping up to be a great one!
The coach is modern, spacious and comfortable (even for one of us being over 6ft) and has a great glass roof to take in the view. Our tour guide Greg was awesome. He explained the day in detail to the group, provided some great local advice, knowledge and combined this with a great sense of humor which made the day really enjoyable, comfortable and go very quick.
The picnic lunch was filling and delicious. The cruise around Milford Sound was amazing and the boat modern and spacious and it also gets up close to a waterfall and we even lucky to see some dolphins too!
We have both traveled a lot around the world and this tour is up with the best. Many thanks Greg and the team at Southern Discovery, we will recommend, 5 stars!

Kia ora Chris Wow this review has really made our day. Thank you so much for taking the time to pass on your feedback. We're so glad you had such a great day with us. It's been so awesome taking our fellow kiwi's to Milford Sound on our coach trips. Did you know we actually have a few less seats in our coach to allow for more comfort and extra legroom. We'll be sure to pass on all your lovely comments to the team, hopefully we'll see you back in Milford Sound soon. Ngā mihi, Ciara
