About the operator

- beffffff0 contributionsAbsolutely stunningWe did this tour for my birthday a few days ago as a group of friends and have been looking forward to it since we booked at the start of July. From booking and arranging taxis from an air bnb on the outskirts of town, to the service at check in the team were awesome to deal with. The trip itself was absolutely amazing. The commentary during the flight was informative, with really fantastic views, and the cruise was absolutely stunning from start to finish, again with great commentary. We got to see 3 seals, 2 in the water and one resting on the rocks. That was an extra we weren’t expecting. Weather wise it was a dry, sunny day, which is really what we wanted, as we had more to do once we were back at base, but I would probably also go back on a rainier day just to see the waterfalls in full flow. Even on a dry day they were impressive. The only negatives from the whole day were the taxi being about half an hour late (not the tour organisers fault), so we barely had time to get checked in and to the safety briefing, and that we were on one of the planes where all the seats aren’t window seats, which I had hoped would not be the case, and on the flight back I was unfortunately put in a middle seat along with another member of our group, so couldn’t see as much of the scenery, especially myself being very short. Still a day to remember and I would use the same team again.Written 8 January 2025
- SMOOZA0 contributionsHighly recommendedA very organised tour with hotel pick-up. Tom our pilot was great - made us all feel very safe and provided interesting commentary throughout the flight. The cruise was amazing and included a decent sandwich lunch. Also good that Air Milford passengers have reserved seating on the boat. Beautiful scenery from the flight and the cruise. Overall this is a great way to see Milford sound especially if you’re short on time.Written 5 January 2025
- Curiosity646682223810 contributionsHighlight of the trip!We spent 3 weeks touring both islands and this trip was the highlight for me. Weather was perfect and the pilot provided a lot of interesting information about the geology as we flew, and pointed out lots of landmarks. The cruise was on a smaller boat, so there weren't big crowds like on some other boats. Tip: For the best photos, sit near the back of the plane. The seats in the front are obscured slightly by the wings.Written 5 January 2025
- terribQ7059XJ0 contributionsGreat value! Very funFantastic day trip. Well worth the money. Our pilot was great, and as a nervous flyer, the experience went really well. It was a very smooth and easy transition between the flight and boat and back again.Written 1 January 2025
- U6082MBcarolg0 contributionsA stunning aerial view of Fjordlands National ParkWe flew back to Queenstown on Air Milford after our cruise on Milford Sound. Moa Trek tours had arranged for the transfer. Our pilot, Antony Spoull, did a terrific job preparing us for the slight turbulence and pointing out some interesting facts about the spectacular scenery. He and his dad run a first class operation!Written 26 December 2024
- AJSparks20140 contributionsAmazing flight and great customer service! The staff and pilot provided excellent service from the booking through the greeting and pilot briefing. The flight afforded us specular views of the amazing landscape. Sadly the weather came in and we had to return to base which whilst a shame we appreciated the pilots took the chance and when we landed we were offered an alternative flight or a full refund. That’s what I call excellent service!Written 25 December 2024
- kschmidt100 contributionsOnce in a lifetime experience!A truly unforgettable experience with Air Milford, a flight to Milford Sound & a 2-hour cruise is a "must-do" for anyone visiting Queenstown or the South Island. Our pilot, Emma Penney, was awesome & Air Milford made the experience as seamless & enjoyable as possible. The views from the flight & during the cruise are astounding, honestly an emotional experience that my wife & I will never forget. Highly recommend to anyone looking to travel to Milford Sound & Air Milford is the outfit to do it with!Written 22 December 2024
- Robert5710 contributionsTop experience of our NZ vacation in a few short hours. This will get you everything you'd experience after driving to Milford Sound and booking a boat ride directly. Except, this saves you about 14 hours of driving there. VERY professional staff took great care to ensure we were safe and had a terrific experience. Our plane had 12 passengers, we were 1 of 3 planes the company had that day. The company booked a private boat ride for us that began immediately when we arrived. We took a short bus ride from aiport to boat. Boarded immediately and departed within moments. Our boat tour of the fiord was all the way out to the sea and back again. We saw porpoise and seals along the way. On way back in we stopped at the water falls. I did notice our boat traveled through the water a bit faster than the other boats. From what I could see all the boats took the same path, just ours traveled through the water a bit faster. And, that only enhanced the experience. What we saw from the plane was breath taking. The sights along the way where a high point of our entire NZ vacation. Absolutely recommend.Written 20 December 2024
- trickyvillains0 contributionsA great way to visit Milford Sound! An amazing experience! Have back ups because weather can be a factor (it might be nice in QT but not so good in Milford Sound!). Our pilot, Captain Tom, was brilliant, and all the staff were very friendly. It’s a great flight across to the Sound, and Air Milford take you right to the ferry, which is also a really nice experience. Honestly its just an all in great trip!Written 20 December 2024

- Snakegut250 contributionsFirst Class Flight Above the Fjordlands! This flight was one of the single best experiences of my life. Weather pushed our flight out from a short hop to a longer air tour of the region, and it was absolutely incredible. Antony was amazing from greeting us at the port hub, escorting the group to the plane, and then the flying was outstanding. It's a small plane so expect a few bumps, but even those were smooth and so fun. The views of the fjord, the coast, and the incredible landscape of the area are absolutely incredible. I killed my camera battery taking pictures and video. So stunning. If you are going to the South Island - do this trip. My ONLY regret was that we took the bus out and flew back - knowing how great Milford Air and Antony are - should have flown both ways. 5 out 5 - 100% recommend. Worth the price!Written 3 December 2024

- U4337JGwaynem0 contributionsMemorable Scenic FlightWe enjoyed a memorable experience this morning: the Big Five Glaciers Overflight. Kudos to our pilot Tom. His expertise in the Captain’s Chair along with an abundant knowledge of the area made for a marvellous flight. Tom, who speaks fluent NZ English, passed on details of the lay of the land – clearly – as we flew over this most magnificent natural landscape. It was fortunate that our flight occurred on a fine November day. Not too many clouds. We highly recommend this awesome New Zealand experience and thanks again to Tom and the team at Air Milford. Well worth it.Written 20 November 2024

We had planned to do a fly, cruise, fly trip to Milford Sound, including a fiord cruise. However, as was the case 22 years ago when we were last in NZ, weather didn't permit the lake cruise. HOWEVER, we did get to fly to and from the Sound this time, and the views from the air were stunning. The professionalism of the flight crew was great and while we were a bit disappointed in not doing the fiord cruise, it was clear that the staff was interested primarily in keeping us safe. Still an excellent experience and one we will cherish.

Dear Sheryl,
Thanks for taking the time to share your flight on Trip Advisor, it means a lot because I empathise how high the anticipation would have been to finally return 22 years later and complete the full Fly/Cruise/Fly combination. However Milford Sound can have other ideas, this past year the final rain tally was 8.8m (347"). This is only just shy of the all time record of 9.2m (362") record. Obviously this directly translates into flight itinerary disruptions.
Our goal is to achieve the best out of every situation, and I'm so satisfied that you have the same philosophy when it comes seeing the positives of the overflight. As they say, third time lucky, so in this situation I hope you can return to try with us one final time and we can put the full combination together!
For future travellers, it looks like this disrupted weather system will continue until at least the middle of January, so having this in mind is excellent for setting the expectation. And like we suggest for all guests, ideally book on the first available day so in case of bad weather, we have alternate days to roll your booking to the next fine weather day.

We booked air transport to and from Milford Sound because we were scheduled for an overnight cruise. Unfortunately, we had completely underestimated the potential weather impact. Luckily, the entire crew at Air Milford worked to arrange alternative flight arrangements to ensure we made our overnight cruise as well as our flight home. The pilot, Antony, even arranged to have the cruise ship's bus driver drop us off at a different airfield when weather prevented him from landing in Milford Sound for our return flight. We travel often, and our experience with Air Milford far exceeded our expectations.

A brilliant experience, fantastic crew, and great views! I organised a surprise scenic Queenstown flight for my partner's birthday and, to my absolute delight, Air Milford upgraded us to the Milford Sound flight (big shoutout to Sara!). I had been to Milford several times before, but to see it from the air was such an amazing experience that I will remember forever! Would highly recommend.

Pilot Alex did a fantastic job and helped me cross one of the top rated falls off my bucket list (sitting in the co-pilot seat). I've done 9 of 12 top falls in the world and Sutherland Falls New Zealand didn't disappoint. Normally it takes 4 days to hike or "tramp" as they call it to the falls. Instead I did the overflight which was breathtakenly beautiful. Air Milford top notch service with special cudos to Jo who has an amazin customer service gift. Congrats to the team!

Dear Dalia L,
Thank you for sharing your review of Air Milford with the TripAdvisor community.
It was our pleasure to host you recently and help you tick of another of your 12 top waterfalls in the world. It sounds like an enthralling bucket list, it must have taken you to some incredible locations in the world and we are really proud that our little corner of the world was involved.
The Sutherland falls are super cool, they tumble 581 meters in three cascades from lake Quill, which is a high alpine lake in Fiordland National Park. As you say, one way to access it is by foot, on the 4 day Milford track, which is one on New Zealand's great walks. Or, you can join us for a 1hr scenic flight from Queenstown and get incredible birds eye views of the falls and the wider region.
On behalf of the whole team, thank you for your kind feedback and all the best for finishing off your list!
Sincerely,
Mary,

Before leaving Australia for a few days in Queenstown we booked a Fly/Scenic Cruise/Fly flight to Milford Sound. Online booking was easy on a very good website. Email confirmations were prompt.
On the day we booked the weather was not suitable and the flight did not go ahead. We were scheduled however for the following day which was a cracker with blue sky and a scattering of light cloud. We were picked up from our hotel at the nominated time by a taxi provided by Air Milford. Reception and briefing at their operational HQ at Queenstown Airport was friendly, professional and informative.
I was impressed with the brand new 10-seater Turboprop Cessna Caravan 208. This high-wing aircraft provided excellent viewing. Its cabin was comfortable and relatively quiet for a general aviation aircraft. As an aviation and flight simulation enthusiast, I was chuffed at the opportunity to fly in the co-pilot seat on the outbound leg to Milford Sound.
The flight was visually stunning. While it was in February, there was a dusting of snow on the peaks thanks to the weather of the previous day. Our pilot, Tom, provided a knowledgeable, ongoing commentary of the major features enroute. The climb out was a little turbulent. For those not experienced in smaller aircraft flying, this is normal, especially over mountainous terrain, and not to be feared. At cruise altitude of 9000 feet (2700m) it was smooth flying.
Arrival at Milford Sound, included an amazing approach into the confines of runway 11. Our pilot accompanied us to a waiting coach which took us on a 5 minute ride to the Milford Sound Cruise Centre where we embarked on a 1.5 hour cruise, exploring the awe-inspiring majesty of the Sound and its waterfalls.
On return to dock, we were met again by our pilot for the return flight. The flight path back to Queenstown was different to the outbound leg with spectacular views of deep mountain valleys and mountain peaks with permanent coverings of snow. Our final track back to Queenstown Airport took us up Lake Wakatipu alongside The Remarkables mountain range.
This is an awesome and highly recommended scenic activity if in Queenstown. Air Milford has a 100% safety record and is to be commended for its service and professionalism. It surely beats a 9 hour return road trip to Milford Sound.

Hello CaptAus,
As I was your pilot on the day, I’m happy to respond to your review.
Firstly, thank you for your positive and informative review. We appreciate your comprehensive summary of the experience from booking, right through to the completion of the flight. And as an aviation enthusiast, like me, it is great to hear how much you enjoyed your experience. On a personal level, I’m happy you felt your experience was handled professionally, as this is our aim for every flight.
I enjoyed talking with you on the way over to Milford, and it was good to see that you recognised many of the prominent landmark features from your previous flight simulator experiences. If any of our guests have a specific requirement, we will do our best to accommodate that. I’m glad we were able to get you in the co-pilot’s seat, as someone familiar with aviation, you were able to see what was going on inside as well as outside the cockpit.
With regards to the weather, we were lucky to see fresh snow on our flight. Living and working in the Southern Alps, we have to be prepared for hot and sunny one day, and snow the next. During February, which is often our hottest month, we have seen a great variance in temperatures, from snow, right through the mid 30’s (Celsius). Weather changes rapidly, making for challenging operating conditions at times.
Milford and the Southern Alps speak for themselves. We are very lucky to be able to show this area to our guests, and I’m happy to hear you enjoyed your time with us.
Best regards,
Thomas,
Air Milford Pilot.
