Happy Days
Hoping for fine weather, we should have been disappointed with the misty clouds and scattered rain. However the weather actually contributed towards making the trip more memorable. We had a night at Birchwood Cottages, then we’re taken by their minibus on the drive to Milford. Many stops along the way, including morning tea with provided scones and tea/coffee, plus a running commentary from Jamie whose 25 years of experience truly showed through the imparted knowledge.
It was a great day and the cruise took us the full length of the fiord over two hours with more commentary and humour by our skipper. The scenery was enhanced by the beautiful waterfalls created by the recent (and current) rain.
Back on our coach, on the way “home”, Jamie took us on a brief walk alongside Marian Cascade which was just stunning!
Delivered safely back in Te Anau, we had a great roast meal at “The Ranch” and another cosy night at Birchwood Cottages, to complete a really happy stay in Te Anau.

Spectacular, dramatic and far better than we expected. This was our first visit. We were really impressed with Real Journeys organisation, the bus trip from Te Anau, our driver Jill and the stops for photographs were on point. Highly recommended.

Extremely Long Drive - But Worth It
Sep 2019
Spending such a long time in a coach with strangers is not normally how I like to spend a day - it is a full day - but it was worth it. The views were amazing. The lunch was extremely disappointing and the bar only took cash on the boat. Otherwise a great long day.

well run operation from hotel pickup to Milford Sound and back
Mar 2020
Real Journeys is a well run organization with good staff, really nice buses and good vessels. We did a day trip to Milford Sound I early March. early pickup from our hotel, a long bus ride with good commentary about NZ, farming, nature, geology, all the long way to Milford Sound. Road is open only to tour buses at this time, so timing was essential. Coach driver Chris was very knowledgeable and accessible for comments and other information. . The time on the Sound is not so long, but the waterfalls, and fjord stunning. The Captain took us out to see the seals, other wildlife; good crew.

Lots of closeups of waterfalls in the Sound
We did this while based out of Te Anau. Picked up at our hotel real early and got back about 6 or 7pm. Worth it! Due to the recent floods the roads were washed out, in process of repair. We had to get to a certain point to caravan vehicles. Appears that caravaning may become the norm as it makes traffic more organized. Bring warm clothing if you want to be out on the deck. It can get chilly. We booked through Real Journeys

Kia Ora. The recent weather effects certainly make things challenging for tourists and tourism operators alike so we appreciate your feedback - it's great to hear you rate your Milford Sound cruise so highly. We hope the rest of your visit to our region is just as memorable. Kind Regards - The Team at Real Journeys.

A Long Day Trip, But Worth It
Mar 2020
We did this trip from Queenstown. Our driver was Phil, who was the consummate professional: made sure we were kept informed about the day's agenda and timings and gave us a brilliant running commentary on the area's geology, ecology and nature. The guide on the boat was similarly informative and approachable. A really great day out.

Almost a demerit when it came to boarding the boat: having, as requested, kept to schedule all the way from Queenstown and not wasted any time at our comfort stops, we arrived and queued up in hammering rain to board, only to be told by the lady "they don't want you on for half an hour yet". They did change their mind when we pointed out how unimpressed we were at a timetable that seemed to apply to us but not to them, so 'nuff said, but for future reference guys: that could have created more than few unhappy customers......

One caveat: this is a VERY long and tiring day; we were seriously washed out at the end of it, with a five-hour drive from our hotel to the tour vessel, a couple of hours on the Sound, and a similar drive back. It's well worth it, you will see and learn an awful lot, just be ready for the long trip.

Book this from UK
We were hoping to drive from Te Anau to Milford Haven and cruise from their .Since leaving the UK the extreme rain has resulted in only escorted coaches in a convoy are permitted to Milford Sound. No cars or private vehicles
Therefore we booked from Te Anau late and it cost $169. We met the coach at 7.30am. We stopped a few times on route to see the sights before reaching the escorted area. It started raining (heavy) at about 10am and didn't stop until we were driving back. The rain created spectacular waterfalls along the drive and cruise at Milford Sound. It was difficult if not impossible to take decent photos from the coach or boat and only if you and the camera were soaked. We couldn't appreciate the mountains but we saw how dramatic the thousands of waterfalls were. This was a nature trip and assume the rain was the nature. The road had been washed away and may take weeks or months to repair (if this rain continues).

Milford sound coach and nature cruise

Our Milford sound experience was amazing. Spectacular scenery for the duration of the bus ride from Te Anau through the Fjord lands to the cruise itself, it really is a ‘must do’.

Absolutely loved!
The Nature Cruise Milford Sound (at 10.30am) was excellent and I absolutely loved the cruise guide, Andrea (hope my memory is right) who was knowledgeable and played the piano during the trip. Fortunately, it was a bit of sunny and cloudy weather I had and not crowded cruise.

- Departure: if possible, please departure at Te Anau so that you can enjoy the view without heavy crowds. (I have booked via VIP Milford)

- Nature vs Scenic : It seems not so different, but I absolutely enjoyed Nature Cruise where I can see seals and Tasman sea.

- Snacks : Complementary coffee was good and food/drinks options were very in a reasonable price. It was joyful to have a glass of beer during two hours cruise. (CASH only)

A great operator
Jan 2020
We did the 14-hour coach tour & nature cruise a few days ago, and found it to be very good value. The booking process beforehand was very efficient, and Phil our driver was wonderful. So knowledgeable, friendly and humorous - not to mention a great and safe driver. The nature cruise and provided lunch pack was excellent, as was Richard the onboard guide. We were fortunate to be at Milford on a warm, clear day but I think it would be magnificent in any weather. It is a very long day if you decide to coach it both ways, but you can at least enjoy some of the stunning scenery out the window, and there are ample toilet stops along the way (especially on the way over). Would highly recommend Real Journeys; they offer a very professional and high-quality service.
