- CarysMelba0 contributionsIt was a great experienceIt was great, one day was sunny and there was a swimming opportunity, the next day , returning down the sound was cloudy making everything mysterious. The crew really take care of the passengers, the facilities are comfortable and the food great.Written 15 February 2025
- Rudy A0 contributionsSpectacular⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Doubtful Sound Wilderness cruise was an unforgettable experience from start to finish. The journey itself—starting with the bus and boat trips over—was smooth and well-organized, building anticipation for what was to come. Once in the Sound, everything was absolutely amazing—the breathtaking views, the peaceful atmosphere, and the insightful explanations from the guides about the surrounding areas. Their knowledge and passion really added to the experience. It was truly an incredible and unforgettable experience. Highly recommend.Written 15 February 2025
- Batts650 contributionsCruise and dinner very worthwhileThe Earnslaw cruise and dinner was excellent. The buffet BBQ supplied offered a huge selection and was very tasty. The only thing we did find lacking was instructions, when we arrived at the farm, as to when and how the dinner was to be served. It was all very vague. We also thought there would be more said about the history of the property. But that said, we really did enjoy our evening.Written 15 February 2025

- ptboPete0 contributionsA unique experienceA unique experience riding on an old steamship. It can be quite warm in the cabin on a hot day but lovely out on the open deck. The view of the lake and surrounding hills were impressive and the visit to Walter Peak and farm quite informative. Be aware though, that there are different types of excursions. I thought we had booked the farm experience which included the buffet meal and sheep shearing demo but had mistakenly chosen the Eco tour which included a tour of the gardens/orchard, tree planting and a delicious charcuterie lunch with all items being made on the farm or locally.Written 12 February 2025

- peb7470 contributionsDoubtful Sound is beautiful and quite magicalWe made this trip 10 years when it was operated by people who really did care about the area, history and wildlife. In comparison, RealNZ who took over the operation are simply a tourist operator and sadly the trip reflected this eg photo of the RealNZ boat exhaust polluting Doubtful Sound throughout trip. But if you can ignore the obvious commercialisation and want to see the beauty of the Sound then the trip may well be worthwhile for you. Good luck.Written 10 February 2025
- gilchristroberts0 contributionsFantastic trip, a must do!Amazing overnight trip. Spectacular scenery and very knowledgeable guide, Gabriel, gave excellent commentary throughout the trip. Staff were all very accommodating and friendly and worked hard to make sure everyone had a brilliant time and that things ran smoothly. All meals and snacks were good (scones when we boarded, snacks before tea, cake before we left the next morning, plus dinner, evening cheese board and breakfast!). Comfortable cabin and clean facilities. Welcomed into the wheelhouse at any time to chat to the Skipper and watch what's going on. Kayaking guided by PJ was a lovely way to experience the environment, followed by a swim before dinner. Was lovely to be secluded and not see any other boats at our overnight mooring. The 'sound of silence' was a lovely experience. *Onboard the Wanderer.Written 9 February 2025
- schatzieNoosa0 contributionsEverything perfect, but the dog was handled badly😢What a close to perfect evening. Lovely cruise, amazing food and magic scenery until the sheep shearing show. Being a dog lover I felt saddened to see a dog denied water after sitting on a hot podium in full sun numerous times a day, having to run up and down steep hills to chase sheep, then sitting back on the podium panting, exhausted to be padded by hundreds of tourists and not a bowl of water in sight! When I politely asked the dog handler if there was a reason why the dog had no access to water he became very defensive. Asking me if I accused him of dehydrating the dog....if she was thirsty she could drink down the lake, about 200 metres away while still on the podium being padded by many tourists? Unbelievable!🤨Written 7 February 2025

- DBbrad0 contributionsPoorly Mannered GuestsI was not sure about booking a buffet dinner and should have listened to my instincts. The food was good, but of course not warm. I don’t care for jostling with other guests to get my meal. This was exceptionally disappointing, it was like a competition to fill our plates. There were children running around with no respect for their turn in line. The same was true for lining up for the boat. Adult guests ran (yes RAN) onto the boat and saved seats. To say this was supposed to be a romantic evening is such a stretch. The demo was interesting but again, children were running up on the stage as the dog was working the sheep in the field behind. The crowd talked throughout the presentation. We must have been very unlucky to be part of such a crowd.Written 2 February 2025

I was in two minds about taking a ride on the TSS Earnslaw. Let’s face it you are spoilt for choice with activities in and around Queenstown. But, I can now say confidently, it is well worth it.
Firstly, it’s an historical steamboat launched in the same year as the Titanic. It is coal-powered and you can watch them load the coal from the wharf, then on route via the viewing platform in the engine room. This feels like you have stepped back in time.
Secondly, we had a female captain and she welcomed people to come by and ask questions as well as walk around the front and side of the steamboat. There was a genuine sense of pride about the steamboat by all the staff onboard.
Thirdly, there is music and a cafe on board. As I was traveling solo, I ordered coffee as soon as I boarded the steamboat and settled at a table near the piano. This was a treat. The pianist was excellent and played a mix of instrumental and ballads. She even encouraged people to join her and the two brave people that did, had wonderful voices.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed it. You can get off the steamboat at Walter Peak High Country Farm for lunch and various activities, which about 70% of the passengers did. I opted to stay on board and enjoy the scenic ride back into Queenstown.

Booked the TSS Earnslaw trip with the Walter Peak Horse Trek and we thoroughly enjoyed both aspects of the trip.
The steamboat is a real step back in time experience, with a pianist in the lounge playing throughout the trip, which was lovely.
When we got off the ship at Walter Peak, we were met by David, who took us to the horses and accompanied us on the ride.
Both my husband and I and the other person on the ride, all had previous riding experience, although none is required for this walking trek.
The horses were just perfectly behaved, well turned out and obviously very well cared for.
The views on the ride, of the mountains and the lake were just breathtaking and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience and our first time on a horse for over 11 years.
Credit to our guide, David, too, who made the whole experience a memorable one.
We returned to to the cafe after the 40 minute ride, where we found a lovely afternoon tea waiting for us to enjoy before returning to Queenstown on the ship.
Overall it was a fantastic 4 hour experience.

The trip over on the grand old Lady of the Lake, TSS Earnslaw, was such a joy to be on. This was a wonderful way to view the most beautiful landscape that is Lake Whakatipu and it's surrounding environment.
It's a wonderful way to arrive at Walter Peak Farm.
Our Eco Tour was a wonderful way to share in the ongoings at this beautiful part of Aotearoa. And having the opportunity to plant native trees to put back forests of long ago was quite a thing.
The chef put on a fabulous platter with produce from the farm garden. I wish I hadn't had such a big lunch 😊
Overall, I recommend this tour to anyone who has interested in exploring a beautiful place, on one of the oldest running steam ships on the world.

TSS Earnslaw was a treat for a lovely ride on the lake. The boat holds a lot of people who are doing various tours. Piano player was a nice touch. Once at the resort, the patio was a bit warm in the sun but too beautiful to sit inside! They have tables of various sizes and you aren’t stuck at a long table with strangers. The manager comes around and invites tables up to the buffet, which we thought was a great idea until we were invited at almost the very end. The line was very long inside and we watched numerous people coming in for seconds and dessert before we even reached the first section. There was NOTHING left at the appetizer/salad station and it was never replenished. They did replenish the hot station and meat stations and what we ate was tasty. The dessert was delicious as well but only halfway thru they were ushering us to go to the show. No waitress in site and no way to pay the bill, we had to leave our half eaten desserts to head across the property to the sheep shearing show. We figured we must have time to come back and settle our tab and visit the gift shop after the show. WRONG…. Our waitress did arrive to the amphitheater and we were able to settle our tab. The sheep shearing show started great and was informative, until the man who was shearing the sheep cut the sheep and suddenly there was a large amount of blood all over the sheep and the man’s hands. He assured us it looked much worse than it was and he kept going. This was horrifying and several people abruptly left. When he was done, he rendered no aid to the sheep and put him back in the enclosed pen. He then demonstrated the dog herding portion of the show. We were told to head back to the boat as it was ready to leave. I thought, finally, he’ll care for the hurt sheep. But instead we saw him coming to the dock and working on the loading bridge of the boat. I’m truly saddened thinking about the injured sheep and between that and the disorganization of the buffet, I simply can’t recommend this activity.

We had the most amazing experience on this trip. The Earnslaw trip to Walter Peak farm was just beautiful (we were so lucky to have lovely weather too). Lots of coffee, tea and snacks to chose from to purchase on the boat itself, and then THE MOST AMAZING buffet lunch that exceeded all our expectations. Had a great time listening to and watching the sheep shearing talk & demo and watching the sheepdog do her magic as well. Would 110% recommend this trip as a MUST do for any visitor to Queenstown - really worth it to include the buffet lunch. It was a big highlight during out trip :)

Came her to enjoy a getaway birthday for few days. Took a look on my option and I picked this highly recommended activity. We departed at 5 pm and returned at 9 pm.
I upgraded my ticket from the lunch option to the dinner option to have the sea food option. Enjoyed exploring the steam boat, a band was playing nice songs, made the 40 min pass so quick. Upon reaching the shores of the restaurant, the whole crew were waving hello to us. We arrived to the Earnslaw restaurant before sunset which was a good opportunity to take photos. Dinner was superb, variety of options for the open buffet section, lots of yummy salads, cheeses, appetizers & delicious desserts, Charcoal grilled meat, personally I went to the sea food. The crew were so friendly, loved how they served me with a candle and a cake platter as it was my birthday. The sheep show was interesting, the presenter was enthusiastic as he was instructing the lovely dog with one word or two.
Upon our return back to town, I sat next to the band, lovely music and vibes with add to another birthday song :).
Overall, had an amazing experience.

This was our 2nd trip on the TSS Earnslaw, the first being 11 years ago, but this time we decided to do the BBQ lunch at Walter Peak. It was a beautiful Saturday at the end of November and very busy. The boat is a stunning relic of the past which strangely matches the sublime landscape it traverses. At Walter Peak farm we were herded (pun intended) to the new looking amphitheatre where the sheep/dog show takes place. It was a good display but by this time 1pm, all we could think about was lunch. The homestead was a short walk away surrounded by the most beatiful gardens full of spring blooms. Tables had been assigned already and we found ourselves on the terrace with an amazing view of the lake. We ordered some drinks (not included) and waited to be called to the buffet. While our table was great, unfortunately we were one of the last to be called, so some of the items were depleted. This was a bit disappointing for the 2 vegetarians in our group as it seemed to be mostly the potatoes & roast vegetables. It was still a great buffet, and the desserts were excellent. Before long it was time for the return leg so there wasn’t really any time to have a little wander around the gardens, unless perhaps you were amongst the first to eat. The price of the drinks both at the farm & on the boat, plus the way the buffet was managed, were minor disappointments but overall this was a lovely way to spend a sunny afternoon in Queenstown and experience the beauty of the lake.

We were booked for an afternoon cruise only but on check in we discovered that the boat had broken down. We were re-booked onto the evening cruise and upgraded to include the dinner at Walter Peak.
What a fantastic experience! The boat itself is fascinating and took us 45 mins to our destination for dinner. It was incredibly well organised with great service, food galore at great quality - including plenty of fish / shellfish options.Multiple choices of desserts and the lolly cupboard!
Followed by a sheep shearing demo in the auditorium before our return trip to Queenstown. A lovely multi genre family trip enjoyed by all.

The TSS Earnslaw is a wonderful old restored steamboat. The cruise is like stepping into a bygone era. For machinery geeks (like me) visiting the engine room was so cool. We were very pleasantly surprised about the dinner and visit to the farm. The buffet dinner was one of the best buffets we have ever experienced and the location of the restaurant overlooking the lake was beautiful, particularly with the sun setting. The farm show was an unexpected bonus after dinner. They demonstrated sheep shearing and dogs herding sheep. It was quite enjoyable and we learned a few things in the process.
Highly recommended!

Great day. Trip on the Earnslaw was relaxing and there was food and drink to buy plus an entertainer. Would recommend not to eat as BBQ lunch was yummy and lots of salads meat and sweets to choose from. You could go to a sheep shearing demonstration but we just sat in the beautiful gardens and looked at the mountains and lake. Very relaxing and enjoyable.

Hello, wondered if anyone can advise a timeline for the 11am and 1pm cruise?
Ie if you get the 11am cruise does that mean you eat at 12pm and if you get the 1pm cruise lunch at 2pm?

I went on the morning cruise. Lunch was on a private farmhouse on a private island at 1pm. You need to book in advance for the cruise and pick the lunch option separately
