About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- R2948EBhelend0 contributionsExcellent tour with and Graeme was a very friendly and knowledgeable guideAn excellent all day tour with our guide, Graeme. Everything ran to plan except that due to adverse weather the scenic flight had to be abandoned and we returned by coach. But Milford Sound did not disappoint - a wonderful day.Written 15 March 2024
- Jeff R0 contributionsTake the flight back!Never was a great guide on the bus -- moved us along quick enough to hit lots of stops along the way, but never pushy about it. Great drive. That said, taking the flight back is an amazing experience. There are phenomenal views every moment that you just can't get any other way. I'd give it 10 stars if I could! Yes, it's a little pricey. But we'll worth it.Written 13 March 2024
- Susan D0 contributionsWonderful day!Amazing experience from top to finish! Shelly was a wonderful guide and driver, knows the park and the drive and the road like the back of her hand and managed to somehow have us see all the amazing spots but not seemed rush but then still do everything in a day. The boat tour of the sound just takes your breath away with the light, the water and the magnificence and the views keep going with the return to Queenstown by small plane. Sure you can drive it all and worry about the parking and the drive and the timing. OR truly sit back and enjoy the experience with this well run crew.Written 13 March 2024
- ront8180 contributionsGreat day traveling to Milford SoundWe were fortunate to have Chelsea as our guide and driver. She was terrific in every way. Concerned for our safety and comfort, informative, entertaining, and enthusiastic about the whole experience. The boat tour really allowed us to see the splendor of the region. Unfortunately, the weather did not allow us to fly back to Queenstown as planned but that only slightly impacted our enjoyment of the day. I highly recommend Altitude Tours and feel lucky that Chelsea was able to share her love for and appreciation of this beautiful part of NZ.Written 12 March 2024
- timbE8421XP0 contributionsAmazing day at Milford SoundMore waterfalls than we could count after recent rains. Pam our guide was personable, knowledgeable, fun and an excellent driver. Learned a lot. Stops along the way were timely and worthwhile. Milford boat tour was amazing. Crew was friendly and competent and the boat comfortable and well maintained.Written 5 March 2024
- C4146PRjayb0 contributionsHighly recommendedThis was an amazing experience. Milford Sound is stunningly beautiful and the drive went quickly with great insight and educational commentary by our guide, Sinchan. Sinchan did an excellent job personalizing the experience for each participant. Unfortunately, the return flight was cancelled due to weather issues; but it was nonetheless a trip that we will remember for a lifetime. Highly recommend this tour and our guide, Sinchan.Written 4 March 2024
- Trek134229342070 contributionsA grand day out! After a delayed start due to a mix up with a passenger pick-up, we had a long and scenic drive with entertaining and informative commentary from Nev our driver. Arriving on time at the ferry terminal, we were handed our lunch packs before boarding for a trip around Milford Sound. Tea and coffee were available on board, and there was a large enclosed area where we could sit out of the chill weather, yet still enjoy good views of the impressive scenery. The boat literally goes to the harbour mouth and then returns with each leg lasting about 45mins. On our return leg, we encountered fur seals and bottlenose dolphins that played happily in the wake of the boat. Sadly, due to the weather conditions, we could not fly back as planned, so hopped back on the minibus with Nev for our return journey. This is a good day out, but when booking, bear in mind that your return flight is entirely at the mercy of local weather conditions. It’s a long drive, but our minibus was comfortable and expertly driven, and our travelling companions good company.Written 1 March 2024
- brooklynh9720 contributionsUnforgettable experience of New Zealand's west coastPhenomenal! Don't miss this experience. Our guide's name was Neville (hope I spelled that right), and he was wonderful. Funny and informative, with just the right balance between giving us lots of informative commentary and letting us enjoy the views while listening to movie soundtracks. I loved driving through the beech forests, and the views from the boat were stunning. I definitely recommend taking the scenic flight back if weather permits. We were able to see the stunning west coast from land, sea, and air all in one day!Written 26 February 2024
- wolfeam10 contributionsAwesome tourExcellent tour! Very smoothly run. Perfect amount of stops to break up the driving. Weather was beautiful so we were lucky to be able to fly back. Sinchan was an enthusiastic and knowledgeable tour guide. Thank you for a great experience!Written 25 February 2024
- 2KSTravelers0 contributionsExcellent TourOur guide, Graeme, was great! Shared history along the way, gave us time at all the picturesque stops to take photos, and a fun personality! It was a long day but perfect for us to relax after flying from the U.S., then Auckland to Queenstown the day before. Sunshine and waterfalls made for a perfect cruise. This small group tour is the best way to see Milford Sound from Queenstown.Written 24 February 2024
- KJG7800 contributionsAwesome day from start to finishMy husband and I were really looking forward to our coach, cruise, flight experience at Milford Sound and the day did not disappoint. The 5 hour + bus journey (in a minibus for 16) flew by with our driver / guide Sinchan on top form - making sure everyone got involved, sharing interesting facts (geography, botany, history, craft beer and more!) and keeping everyone amused! The boat was small enough to make sure everyone had space and could see all the top sights. Best of all, our flight back to Queenstown was awesome. We had a wonderful view of the Sound, the mountains and valleys, lakes etc. All in all an amazing day out!Written 22 February 2024
- Departure591679733750 contributionsChelsea, Chelsea, ChelseaMilford Sound is a geological marvel that is somehow upstaged by the effortlessly friendly and professional tour guide, Chelsea. During our brisk smooth ride , Chelsea managed to strike an utterly brilliant balance between unpretentious discoursing on the environs and letting the views speak for themselves. She is a knowledgeable guide with a gift for gab not unlike a top tier talk show host. If you do Milford Sound, ask for Chelsea.Written 20 February 2024
- Y4290YIrichardm0 contributionsGreat guide and driver and boat trip, but annoying cancellation of plane and poor seat on coachChelsea both guide and chauffeur was great. Boat trip and Captain were very good, with enough explanations about the history of the are delivered in a mature manner. Negative was that we were advised that only a slim chance of flying back die to weather. We wouldn’t have done the tour if we had know it would be 8 hours drive. Also get ting in last stop meant that we couldn’t sit together and I was in the back seat and their is not enough shoulder room for 4 adults, especially as I suffer from claustrophobia. But Chelsea asked guests to move after the cruise which was a lifesaver.Written 18 February 2024
- SOOMINie0 contributionsGreat tour & it’s a mustEverything was great. Nev was very helpful & so passion about what he does. I still wish my flight back was possible - understood weather wasn’t allowed with Mother NatureWritten 18 February 2024
- Navigator051020136710 contributionsFirst class day!Tommy was our guide - fantastic friendly knowledgeable first class ( apart from supporting Arsenal!) - trip on the boat was amazing and then a brilliant flight back with Kurt to Queenstown - highly recommend Altitude and finished off the day with a beer in their craft bar in FranktonWritten 15 February 2024

The whole trip from start to finish was breathtaking. We were picked up in Lower Shotover, Queenstown at 6.45am. Nev, our driver and tour guide was so knowledgeable and informative and he went out of his way to make as many interesting/photo stops as possible. His stories of the area as we traveled to and from the sound brought the whole tour to life. He knew the area intimately and had a great sense of humour. What an amazing resource Altitude Tours has.
Very personalised experience and, despite the van being full, we all had very good views from the mercedes van as we travelled to Milford Sound. The trip to Milford Sound was even better then the Milford Sound cruise! Stops to view and bathroom breaks (where you can get coffee and food) were ideally spaced.
We opted to return home in the van and we had space to spread ourselves out as some people had booked return flights so the van was only 50% full. We took our own lunch from a bakery shop in Queenstown and were glad we did this as the provided lunches looked disappointing. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this tour and Nev. We had perfectly clear weather and we would consider returning again to see it in the rain and mist. Charles/Lynna - Hong Kong.

We would highly recommend this tour! It’s a long day but totally worth it. Our tour guide Ash was amazing, super knowledgeable and lots of fun - and stopped at lots of awesome places along the way! The drive was in was just as good as the Sound.

It’s easy to see why this tour is rated so highly. Milford Sound is truly spectacular. I’m very glad we booked it with a smaller group and had Sinchan as our guide. He was very informative, entertaining and accomodating. He was very good at breaking the ice and getting everyone to feel comfortable.
The only unfortunate piece was that we couldn’t fly back due to cloudy weather. It was still very enjoyable.

A long drive nicely broken up by either Graemes informative commentary or his eclectic 26 hour playlist! Also plenty of great stopping points en route. The sound cruise was comfy inside the boat and great outside fir photos. Great waterfalls and seals! It is a long drive, but very comfortable. Nice one Graeme.

While the scenery on the trip to Milford sound is awesome, the drive there is more than four hours. Nevertheless our guide and driver Sinchan provided many educational facts about New Zealand that gave us a much better understanding of the country. He went to great lengths to ensure that everyone got the most out of the experience. Furthermore he was very entertaining, relational and interacted significantly with the members of the group so that we all felt like family by the end of the day.
