About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- L2307TWkj0 contributionsDisappointingWe've done many cruises and tours around the world and we were underwhelmed by Great Sights overall. I had been warned they are hit and miss so I probably should have booked another company. Our driver Adrian was good. But on the boat the service was ok, but not warm or welcoming from most of the crew. One thing I would suggest is DO NOT order the picnic lunch for $40. One of ours was a vegetarian box which contained an appalling, empty and bland sandwich, and less food overall than the non vegetarian option. Even that was pretty average for the price. The cheese and bickies were plastic cheese too. We also spoke to a couple who had gluten free and were extremely disappointed by how stingy and poor it was for the price. They didn't even get the little chocolate we did...which has no gluten. Of course Milford itself was magic. But I would suggest another company if you're expecting a great experience.Written 20 February 2025
- erino6620 contributionsNew experiences, new places, New ZealandThis was a wonderful experience from start to finish. Ivan was brilliant as both tour guide and driver, with impeccable timing with all his jokes! The cruise was beautiful and the staff were all great on board as well. A must see in the South Island!Written 19 February 2025
- rematkotp0 contributionsIt was a road trip and we stopped at places to take pictures or walk etc. Not at all rushed. Excellent guide cum driver.Great road trip, not rushed, comfortable and guide/driver had vast knowledge of the place and history and educated is.Written 28 January 2025
- 431dmitryb0 contributionsAVOID BY ANY MEANS!!!Terrible tourist company - they have left me on the Mt.Cook. I was 5 min before, but the driver Paul decided to leave earlier. I called customer service less then 10 min after the bus departed, but they didn't return the bus. Nor they booked a hotel for me or gave me food vouchers. Total ignorance of their customers! AVOID BY ANY MEANS, especially the driver Paul - very unfriendly and messy driver that constantly leaves people on Mt.Cook. On the next day he left 2 ladies! This is not funny!Written 19 January 2025
- marktH8004ZX0 contributionsEnjoyable but need to not rush driversTook 3 tours with GreatSights. The tour information was interesting except the one from Queenstown to Christchurch. They have frequent stops to stretch your legs which is nice. Overall it was enjoyable. My only complaint is that the bus drivers all seemed very rushed to make the schedule. On our Milford Sound trip we hit traffic on the way back, it started raining, and the front window fogged up. The driver drove with the window fogged (very quickly). I wish he had pulled over until the window cleared. Both my other trips they left without all the people being on the bus. One was at a small pullout that didn’t have cell reception. Rather than taking a quick look for the missing people, he honked the horn once, waited a minute, and then took off. When the people on the bus complained about the missing people, the driver was very callous. They really need to allow more time in the schedule to allow their drivers to deal with out of the ordinary situations. I don’t think anyone would have minded pulling over for a foggy window or waiting an extra 5 minutes to look for people that didn’t make the busWritten 1 January 2025
- ashwatramani0 contributionsWell planned journey. Poor Guide. My wife & I along with our 4 year old son did this tour from Christchurch to Queenstown on the 22nd of December. My rating is low mainly because of the driver. The Good - Very well planned trip and really nice stops along the way. We stopped at Geraldine for breakfast. We then stopped at Lake Tekapo, followed by Lake Pukaki and then Mount Cook. On the way down from Mount Cook, we stopped at a couple more places including an orchard and then finally Queenstown. The bus was very very comfortable - had USB charging for phones and wi-fi as well. The Bad - We spent 10 days in New Zealand and every single person we met and interacted with were very nice, except for this driver. I think his name was Nui, and he was extremely unpleasant, rude and short all along the way to me and my wife. He seemed very grumpy whenever we asked him a question, and his narration along the way was also very dull and seemed as if he was just doing the narration for the heck of it. Except for our driver, i think the overall tour was good.Written 24 December 2024
- Stay470340156620 contributionsLove the travel guide! We were taking the 745am bus from Queenstown to Tekapo. I was going to catch up on some sleep on the way BUT I was amazed by the scenic views AND our erudite travel guide! He knows everything on the road, flowers, trees, weeds, crops, cattle, shops, spots, glaciers, lakes, even history and recent events!I totally enjoyed his commentary along the way. The journey is also well planned that we always get a chance to stretch our legs before it gets too long. Too bad we parted our ways early at Mt. Cook. Looking forward to next trip in coming days!Written 5 December 2024
- Guide487714930690 contributionsDo not book on GreatSights. This tour is a whole fu@s*ng clown. such a waste of money. I went to NZ for my birthday trip and this trip was the most expensive trip of mine. 8/11 at 7:30am, was supposed to be my trip. I arrived at the pick up point at 7:25 but I am unable to find to vehicle as there's just a lot of them their waiting. I was worried. At past 7:30, I was looking for a way to contact the operator but couldn't reach them as I was using an australian number. Nobody is contacting me which should have been done. The hotel in ny pick up point was just too nice to let me use the telephone so I was able to contact the operator only to find out that they already gone and just left me there without contacting me to any of my contact details that they have. I am asking for a refund because it's their fault but they are just too greedy. Please don't ever book on this agency. Great Sights is the name of the agency.Written 11 November 2024
- Livingthegoodli0 contributionsWhat a day!My husband and I travelled throughout NZ without a car (newly retired). Figuring out how to get to Queenstown from Christchurch was challenging and then I found this tour! Worth the cost as you get to your destination and get to see New Zealand's South Island stunning scenery. Awesome, clean, comfortable coach with large windows-we sat back and watched the magnificent scenery unfold. They gave us the pickup place in Christchurch for 7am and it appeared right on time-I could not believe it. Paul was our expert driver-especially on those windy roads. So happy he was driving and not me! From Lake Tekapo, to Mt Cook, small towns, stopped for lunch at Hermitage Hotel (our cost) and the amazing drive into Queenstown arriving on time about 7pm. A long day but it never felt it. Stopped along the way where you could get snacks and fresh muffins and coffees (our cost) - clean bathrooms. it was one of our favorite days in the breathtaking country of New Zealand. I thoroughly recommend this trip. Thank you Greatsights for providing a phenomenal travel experience.Written 10 November 2024
- gasperro0 contributionsWorth It, With Room for ImprovementDefinitely worth it in terms of not having to drive ourselves to/from Milford Sound from Queenstown. Bus drive was scenic throughout, with our tour guide giving good commentary on the sights and life in NZ. The cruise was lovely - recommend skipping the lunch ticket and grabbing a cup noodle from the on-board shop :) Super, super windy if you go above deck, dress appropriately and leave hats at home. The overall logistics of the tour could use some improvement - there didn’t seem to be a good system of keeping track of passengers, so we spent a lot of time tracking down one or two people down at each stop, putting us behind schedule. Sometimes the driver just counted heads or asked to make sure the people around us were on board. No one got left behind but I wasn’t expecting to babysit fellow passengers. This was complicated by some people getting on/off at Te Anau - we spent five mins thinking two people were missing but they in fact left the group. Additionally, the stops in Te Anau were not long enough; the very first stop on the trip had wayyy too many coaches pull up at once and the cafe was severely overwhelmed. Felt like a scheduling issue from the tour providers. Food was out of stock, people were complaining their order wasn’t done and their bus was leaving, lines for the toilets, etc. We barely had time to get a coffee before our driver was starting to gather our group. Had to absolutely house our food items as we were told we couldn’t eat on board. We also specified our drop off point when we bought the tour, but the driver just told us to go up front (while driving) and tell him where to stop, as we barreled into Queenstown (he really floored it on the return trip) Only two people got up, as the bus isn’t super stable winding through the roads. Everyone else just got dropped off on the edge of CBD. All fine and good, just unexpected since we were picked up closer to our hotel, so we had to Uber back. All in all, worth it with some room for improvement. These buses seem to be shared among the big tour providers too, so wouldn’t sweat it on which provider you book through.Written 9 November 2024
- BoardingPass5845590 contributionsExcellent super duperI really appreciate our trip booked with great sight our coach driver Mr shailander was a great man not only in driving he also gave lot of information about nature history and many more things 7 startsWritten 8 November 2024
- Camper399757213600 contributionsOk bus boat service not so muchBus trip was fine and entertaining but the picnic lunch is a joke. They say a chicken picnic lunch. What you get is a chicken sandwich with next to no chicken on it,a small bag of chips, 2 cookies, 2 tiny chocolate balls a chocolate bar, small cheese and rice crackers and an apple. That is not a chicken picnic lunch, no where does it mention sandwiches. Great boat trip and scenery ruined by false advertising the lunch.Written 18 October 2024
- Lobsey20130 contributionsAmazing! The tour of Milford Sound was amazing. I would recommend springtime - we had a clear sunny day and the melting ice meant the waterfalls were everywhere. The bus driver was excellent, he gave a lot of great background along the way and was really kind and helpful.Written 9 October 2024
- Explore348282612270 contributionsAmazing and well organised tripThis trip was beyond expectations. We had the most wonderful driver Jeff Hill who made the bus trip interesting travelling from Queenstown to Milford sound. He was so bubbly and interactive telling us stories, interesting facts and also stopping at Mirror lakes, Te Anau, Eglinton Valley, we also saw Keas in the wild. The Milford cruise on pure Milford was amazing. This was great value for money, so well organised, the bus was roomy and glass roof is great for this experience. Overall such a fantastic experienceWritten 21 August 2024
- donnar4510 contributionsWeather be damned, we loved it!Had a wonderful time despite the weather. Having said that, our photos look amazing. Such a beautiful part of the world. A bit confusing knowing which coach we needed to board but once onboard the driver was excellent and very knowledgeable about the whole area. Boat trip was equally informative and got close to photographic areas.Written 12 March 2024

We went in NZ Spring and did the day trip from Queenstown. Great day trip if you are pushed for time on your travel itinerary. Bus trip is long, but the knowledgeable and entertaining Shailendra (bus driver) made the trip feel safe and short. The morning tea stop in Te Anau is short, especially given multiple tour buses arrive at the same time, thus bottlenecking all services at the local cafes and restaurants. However, I understand the stops are short in order to make it to the Milford Sound Cruise.
Cruise is great and the views are majestic. Bring a camera and definitely a raincoat/poncho for the cruise.

We had a great experience! Our bus driver, Richard, was very friendly, and he explained and shared a lot of things about New Zealand along the way from Queenstown to Milford Sound. The bus ride was also comfortable even though it was a long journey from Queenstown to Milford Sound, which took approximately 5 hours! The cruise ride was great, but the wind was too strong that day, so we mostly stayed inside and only occasionally went outside to see the waterfalls.
We had a few stops for pictures and stopped at Te Anau for a bathroom and coffee break. Overall, I think it was a great experience. Our tour guide was great and friendly—Richard really gave his all to provide the best experience for all the passengers. Fortunately, we did not have any bad first-hand experience with other tourists, but since it was summertime, there were a lot of foreigners from all over the world.
The road was a bit challenging for people prone to travel sickness, so it’s a good idea to prepare your medicine if needed.

I took a day trip from Queenstown to Milford Sound with Great Sights. My bus left at 7:40 a.m. and did not return until 8:20 p.m. It was a long, but exciting day.
Milford Sound gets 200 days of rain per year. The previous day was one of those days. In fact, the rain caused the authorities to close the road to Milford Sound due to the danger of avalanches. The rain also caused many waterfalls to appear in full bloom. The day I went was glorious sunshine, so we were able to see the waterfalls in nearly perfect weather.
We stopped for morning tea at Te Anau. Lake Te Anau is the second largest lake in New Zealand. I saw float planes in the lake, awaiting passengers. The Takahe was thought to be extinct until it was rediscovered in the nearby Murchison Mountains in 1948. There are now about 500 Takahe in the country. They are usually the size of a chicken, but the one near the road in Te Anau is much bigger.
We drove through the Eglinton Valley. The Mirror Lakes were beautiful. When we stopped at Monkey Creek, there was a Kea (Alpine Parrot) in the car park. This one wanted to get on the bus.
To get to Milford Sound, you have to pass through the Homer Tunnel. It is one lane wide, so you have to wait up to six minutes to be able to enter. There were beautiful waterfalls to look at while waiting to go through. After passing through the tunnel, we saw more waterfalls.
The coach brings you to Milford Sound, where your boat is awaiting. I will review the cruise portion in a separate review. After the cruise, the coach takes you back to Queenstown, with only one stop in Te Anau.

The only great part of the day was the boat tour on Milford Sound, which was breathtaking despite the bad weather (prepare to get wet!).
However, I really wish I had booked through another company, here’s why;
1. The bus was extremely cold both there and back, and felt colder on the way back because we were all soaking wet. We asked the driver multiple times to turn the heat up and he said he had, but there was no change. Everyone was sat in coats, hats and scarves and I even had to buy gloves because it was unbearably and uncomfortably cold.
2. We missed out half the stops because ‘we ran out of time’ but the stops we did do, we were only allowed there for 5 minutes maximum before he would honk the horn to get people back - he almost chose to miss a toilet stop because of the bad time management but multiple people requested it, so he did stop in the end. We had no stops on the way back because of time, despite earlier being told we would go to those stops because we missed it on the way.
3. The bus was not in good condition, he might strips were broken, air con panels hanging, toilet was out of order. Driver said that operations locked toilets because cleaners couldn’t be bothered to clean and it was easier to lock them… one of the main reasons I booked this bus was because of the toilet onboard, but it appears they’re not functional, despite it being listed as a current amenity on the website. The other main reason for booking was for the glass top roof, but it was so dirty and clouded over the whole time, you couldn’t actually see out of it.
4. Pointless commentary.. driver was talking about how slow the car was going in front of him, then later said ‘he’s gone up to 80 so that’s good’. Also pointing out hay barns and saying that’s where hay is stored?? I know driver was just covering and is new to this route but there was a lack of knowledge and I don’t think I gained any knowledge.
It was just a really bad experience considering how much money I paid, I would never recommend this to anyone.

The coach left me on the side of the road at a tiny pit stop in the rain. I wish I was joking but apparently the bus driver magically counted the right amount of passengers on the bus in order to leave the stop.
I tried to contact Great Sights on the day I was stranded and the operator on the phone didn't offer any help other than to tell me to get to the next pit stop by a particular time to ensure I can get back on the coach. When I asked how am I supposed to do that since I don't have a spare car in my pocket, I wasn't offered any other options other than to stay where I am and get picked up on the coach's trip back to Queenstown. That would have meant a 6 hour wait with zero guarantee that the coach will pick me up.
If you are a solo traveller, like I was, please make yourself known to the driver and others on the coach to ensure you are not forgotten and assumed present.

Very well organised tour, long day but well worth it as Milford sound is a must see and a competitive price for a full day tour,
Annette was brilliant she gave informative commentary on the journey to Milford sound as well as a suitable amount of stops on route, and made it a comfortable journey.
We did not opt for the meal, so can’t comment on this, but you have the facility to purchase food at one of the stops.
This trip is suitable for all, clearly as there was a mix of all ages on the trip.
I would definitely recommend, and thanks Annette for a great day.

The day tour with Great Sights from Queenstown to Milford Sound was definitely worth it. Our driver was David and he was very informative, and wasn’t afraid to have a joke. David has many years experience and was able to provide a lot of information about the area. The trip itself is a very long day as in total you’re gone for around 12 hours but the views the whole way are amazing.
The cruise was very cold but we did go on a day that was forecast for rain. The mountains and waterfalls in Milford sound are amazing to see in person and we even got to see some seals and penguins.
All in all it is a great experience and worth doing if you’re visiting Queenstown. Plenty of picture stops along the way and if you get a great driver like we did, you learn a lot as well.

May 2023
we are a group of 5 looking forward to this milford coach tour trip in May 2023 which ended with great disappointment. it started off well with the pick up point from Rydges Hotel Queenstown which was book and with bus in time. The next pick up took unusually long with pick ups and mess up registration and the trip is extremely long and boring. One stop at Te Anau was short and brief and has to rush off to catch the milford sound cruise. Not much information provided and i was of the opinion to have lunch around nice area and not packet lunch box which is miserable. Lunch box does not look appetizing at all. The Milford cruise is nice overall but not the packet lunch. The problem starts with the return trip, it was definitely a rush trip with the driver driving recklessly with the over run timing. To add on worst is the return drive which the driver swerve around the route to make it back Queenstown and near miss was observed. I guess the whole tour group will have no contest over the dangerous drive on the return trip. The drop off point is a big issue it is book for Rydges Hotel and the driver simply drop all in the middle of nowhere in town. The weather was still drizzling and we have to find our own way back. In the end, we have to street hail 2 taxis to bring us back accommodation and the charges for less than 2km ride is $40 each. It is ridiculous for Great Sightw to simply change the drop off point without giving due consideration to the passengers who are stranded out of no where. Definitely not acceptable. We are just glad to be arrive Queenstown safely, overall it is totally unacceptable and definitely will not recommended this tour provider.

We are sorry to hear that the tour was tiring for you, and you had some issues from your point of view. We believe that the tour may not be suitable to everyone and that is the reason we mention the itinerary, the duration of the tour and stops in the tour description. The Milford Sound tours operate to a tight timetable to make sure everyone has a chance to enjoy photo stops along the way. We may also experience some delays due to unforeseen circumstances which are out of our control. However, our drivers are always willing to make up for it.
Additionally, thanks for your feedback regarding the bus driver. Our coaches are monitored for speed, and we have GPS tracking to ensure these trips are done safely. We would appreciate if you can contact us giving the booking details to investigate the case in order to our team address the situation and improve our services. The food comments will be also pass on to our operation team.

Took this trip on New Year's Day! What a start to the new year! Absolutely amazing day with lots of stops from Queenstown to Milford Sound, then a 2 hour 'cruise' and back again. Extraordinarily beautiful and every aspect of the experience worked really smoothly- pick ups and drop offs on time, and everyone pleasant and considerate. David Gordon ("Gordy") was an excellent driver and his local knowledge was very informative and really enhanced the trip. Thank you!

What company is this? There are several companies that offer this trip. I don’t see the company name anywhere in the info. Thanks.

Hi,
We are visiting New Zealand and would like to take your tour on August 22 for two.
It is July 31st here today in the U.S.
I went to order the tickets for $113 and now back up to $164.
Can I still get the $113 price for August 22 for two people?
Thanks,
Laurie

Yes. The cost covers coach to Milford, lunch on the boat and the cruise around the Sound. You can get very wet under the falls if you choose to. Coach back to Queenstown also covered
