Weather be damned, we loved it!
Had a wonderful time despite the weather. Having said that, our photos look amazing. Such a beautiful part of the world. A bit confusing knowing which coach we needed to board but once onboard the driver was excellent and very knowledgeable about the whole area. Boat trip was equally informative and got close to photographic areas.

Don't count on seeing Lake Tekapo. Not worth the money!
We took the GreatSights Queenstown to Christchurch via Mt Cook & Lake Tekapo tour and it was unfortunately unpleasant. We were only given 5 minutes in Lake Tekapo which was good enough only for a queue to the toilet. No time for quick pictures at the Lake or even a peek at the little church of good shepherd. If that is how little time we'd get, it shouldn't be advertised as if it's a tour highlight. It's misleading. Most passengers were very disappointed. Our driver was unorganized (blamed our group for "messing up" when it's his responsibility to keep all passengers in line). He was ill tempered, rude, and he actually left a solo passenger behind at one of our stops and blamed her for it (she was on time or a minute late at most). The audio sound system in the bus was also terrible and we couldn't understand the driver commentary, little as it was. These affected the quality of the tour by a lot. Given the amount paid for a real tour, I would not recommend this to anyone.

GreatSights' Grand Spectacle of Incompetence - A Masterclass in Customer Neglect
In the spectacular performance orchestrated by GreatSights, I must applaud their mastery in disappointment and utter disregard for customer satisfaction. I had booked an option to fly back from Milford to Queenstown, which was booked with Air Milford through GreatSights. After the completion of my cruise, Air Milford personnel were nowhere to be found and GreatSights driver has no information on our flight. After requesting other tour operators to place a call to Air Milford, we came to know that the flight was cancelled. This completely spoiled my evening plans. There was complete absence of communication. Instead of a timely heads-up, we were left to stumble upon the flight cancellation ourselves. Two hours later, an email arrived – a tad fashionably late, considering we were already resigned to a marathon bus ride. Let's not forget the thrilling subplot – the immaculate distancing from the third-party villain, Air Milford. GreatSights skillfully booked us with them, but when the inevitable cancellation struck, they washed their hands clean of any responsibility claiming that the flight was cancelled due to poor weather. Mind you—the weather was perfectly fine and two other companies (True South and Milford scenic flights) were fully operational and they even tried to see if they had space on their flights to be able to take us. Whereas Air Milford was nowhere to be seen. In conclusion, GreatSights and Air Milford, your grand spectacle of incompetence has left an indelible mark on my expectations of customer service. I eagerly await your next act, wondering what surprising catastrophe you have in store for your unsuspecting audience.

Chaotic in the end , nice trip
Milford Sound is very nice, the trip on the boat was good! At the pickup point for the bus in Te Anau, there was quite some chaos. On the return trip, the bus had no fuel anymore, this of course in the middle of nowhere. After 3,5 hours another bus came to pick us up. The driver was wonderful in organizing everything and kept her good nature.

      Wow a wonderful wet experience
The weather was truly awful as rained all day but this actually enhanced the experience as the creeks and rivers on route were full and fast flowing. Milford Sound was absolutely awesome with so many waterfalls along with those on route from Te Anau which would be less spectacular on a nice sunny day. The tour operator Fiordland Tours based in Te Anau were great as no more than 15 passengers per bus, provided great commentary and plenty of sightseeing opportunities on route and on return. Great cruise as well

      Excellent expereince
It was a wonderful day trip. Our diver and guide Luke Schumm was friendly, funny, informative, and helpful. He knew the ecology, and conservation of the land and explained it well. He made appropriate stops to take photos. Milford Sound is a spectacular place and the cabin crew showed us the highlights and pointed out sea loins and seals. It was a day well spent.

      Not to be missed
Had a great trip out to Milford Sound, our Great Sights driver, a young 22 yr old man was so funny on the way he made the trip even better. The scenery was breathtaking out to the cruise and then on the cruise even better. The box lunch was fresh and delicious and plenty to eat. Great value, highly recommend

      GREAT SIGHTS AWESOME TOUR!
Positive: Professionalism, Quality, Responsiveness, Value Had a awesome time today with great sights traveling from Queenstown to milford sound (day trip) Got picked up at the frankton bus shelter and parked our car for free at the carpark next to it (10hr time limit mon - fri) we went on a Saturday so was good for all day. There were only 6 of us due to the borders closing with covid but our tour guide DAVID was awesome, a top bloke who was easy to talk to, informative and done a long day out with us (12+ hours) and drove us safely there and back. Had a few stops along the way (lunch/toilet breaks at kiwi country in te anau) and some other sight seeing stops which was beautiful. Had a nice little picnic lunch packed for us as well (see pics) thank you mate!

Queenstown to Milford Sound bus trip and cruise
Our Tour guide Paulie was outstanding and the commentry was the best we have had and we have travelled in NZ and other parts of the world. The trip was just wonderful and the timing was great so it didn't feel too long. The Covid protection worked well on the bus and everybody adhered to that but when we got to Milford Sound on the Juicy Cruise the system was extremely floored with nobody wearing masks and that didn't make sense.. The Cruise is worth doing however but the bus trip was great. Thanks to Paulie.

      Would not use again.
This is the worst tour operator I've had the displeasure of dealing with. I booked this for my non-english speaking family and was promised headsets- only to be told they are not available closer to departure date. Every interaction was a pain. Will not recommend.

Queenstown to Milford Sound Full Day Tour
A friend and I booked an Intercity tour but ended up on a Gray Line bus and I'm sure glad we did, thanks to the wonderful driver, Mark! He was warm, cheerful and full of in-depth knowledge on the region which he shared with us through his continuous commentary through the day....thanks to this, the long journey flew by before we knew it! Furthermore, he went above and beyond his call of duty by offering his own lunch pack to us, when he found out that we didn't have any lunch. I can't say enough about how touched we were!! The tour itself was perfectly organized and the free tea/coffee/cookies on the cruise was just what we needed after getting drenched on the cruise deck. We were lucky enough to get a gorgeous sunny day making the whole thing simply perfect! A little note for anyone planning to book this trip: pick up your lunch at Te Anau as the cruise starts as soon as you reach the cruise terminal and there is no opportunity to pick up anything. Also, do not waste the extra bucks on booking the Intercity NATURE Cruise, it is exactly the same as the Intercity REGULAR cruise and is just a money-making gimmick by Intercity (as confirmed by the employees on the cruise)

      GreatSights- Worse service experience ever
We arrived the meeting point early but bus left us behind and it took us 45 mins to get onto the bus! We booked the Milford sound day tour online, and the website asked us to wait at the YHA lakefront bus stop (which is a 17mins walk from our hotel) at 7:09AM. We arrived the meeting point at 7:00AM, waited for 15mins and no one came to pick us up. We did not receive any phone calls even though the company has our contact number. We made a phone call to GreatSights at 7:16AM to confirm if the bus coming or not. The operator said they did not receive any pick up information, but they do have our booking detail (So they know they have 2 passengers but THEY DO NOT KNOW WHEN AND WHERE TO PICK THEIR CUSTOMERS UP? And not even try to call them??). The operator asked us to go to another pick up point which is Athol St. I told her it would take 15mins for us to get there and she said it will be fine. She suggested us to take a cab but we barely see any cab around (Why can’t they just ask the bus turn back to pick us up? I understand that it’s not fair to other passengers but wouldn’t that be faster than asking us to chase the bus???) Then operator kept us on the line for 5mins, while we were already on our way to Anthol St. When she got back onto the phone she asked us to go to another location, the Millennium Hotel WHICH IS FURTHER AWAY FROM WHERE WE WERE. The operator said the bus will wait for us, I even left my phone number to her and confirmed with her if the bus driver has my number. BUT THEY NEVER CONFIRM WHERE YOU ARE BEFORE THEY LEFT. We ran all the way to the third meeting point under the rain. When we were like about 50m away from the Millennium hotel, we saw the bus were driven away. Then we received a call from GreatSights and the first sentence was like “Where are you now? I don’t understand what took you so long to get there, the bus left. I thought you were on a Taxi, the bus waited for so long. Now find a taxi and I will give you a call.” Then she hanged up the phone. WHAT THE XXXX?! 1. Your driver left your customers behind. 2. Your company has our booking reference number and our contact number but did not make any calls. 3. Your staff asked the customer to go to another meeting point and when they arrived the bus left in front of them. And now you blame your customers??!!! What do you expected? We keep running under the rain to chase your bus? Very disappointing. So I called GreatSights again. The operator is not the same one from the first 2 calls, so I have to explain my situation to her again. I said it was not our fault and we did our best. This lady is more reasonable and she sent a taxi to us and it took us to the tour bus. When we hopped onto the taxi, the operator kept us on the line for 5mins. When she got back onto the phone, she asked “Who is on the phone now? I told her my name. Then she asked if we were on the taxi. We said yes and she said “Thank you”. As she was about to hang up the phone, I asked if we have to pay for the taxi fee and she replied the company will take care of the taxi fee. Gosh it was a tough morning.... I had read though the comments on Trip advisor and seems like we are not the only one who had this kind of bad experience. GreatSights please make investigation on this. It really does matter and what we asked for is very basic.

      Well worth it.
We booked this with InterCity but ened up on a Gray Line bus. Santiago, our driver was very informative and provided commentary on the way to Milford Sound, how anyone can talk for 3 hours and not be annoying is beyond me, but he managed it well. There were quiet a few stops on the way to the Sound for sight seeing and a few walks. The picnic lunch was much better that expected, and the cruise delightful. A car caught fire in the Homer tunnel on the way back, and so we were stuck in Milford Sound for and extra 4 hours. Santiago took this in his stride and his demure kept everyone calm. True we did get back to Queenstown at 1am, but that isn't the bus companies fault and they did put the extra effort in to get us back as quick as possible. I highly recommend Intercity/Gray Line for a day trip to see Milford Sound

      Queenstown Tour
Our guide to Milford was a jovial chap named Adrian who was called in last minute to replace an injured crew member. He was extremely knowledgeable about the surrounding countryside answering all the questions we had and remaining upbeat and positive throughout. He pulled over numerous times to stop for scenic overlooks, short walks, etc. From there the boat tours along the fjord were lovely and the flight back was absolutely breathtaking. I highly recommend this option as it saves time on the trip back allowing you potentially to enjoy some afternoon activities in queenstown that might be impossible with the ride back. Our pilot was Tom(?) and he also pointed out key sights and remained calm throughout some briefly rough turbulence. Thanks for the amazing experience to the entire team. Pictures are from the flight only.

The tour company runs a decent operation however there are aspects that need to be improved. Signed up for the Queensland—Milford Sound tour on February 1st. The bus showed up right on schedule and the vehicle was very clean. Each seat had a water bottle. There were three stops for photo sessions and sight seeing—the Chasm was especially breath taking.
Now for the negative. The toilet did not flush the entire round trip. The driver drove competently but he had a tendency to follow the vehicle in front closely—often times at less than one bus length or less. This meant the velocity could not be moderated simply by letting off the gas to slow down. Instead there was constant braking and acceleration which lead to many passengers getting nauseated—yours truly included. Needless to say it was the longest 9 hour bus ride and I contemplated renting a car at the last stop. Tailgating is dangerous and leads to accidents. Additionally the driver would safely pass slower vehicles during long straight aways but would cut back prematurely forcing them to brake suddenly—again not a safe maneuver.

The only great part of the day was the boat tour on Milford Sound, which was breathtaking despite the bad weather (prepare to get wet!).
    However, I really wish I had booked through another company, here’s why;
    1. The bus was extremely cold both there and back, and felt colder on the way back because we were all soaking wet. We asked the driver multiple times to turn the heat up and he said he had, but there was no change. Everyone was sat in coats, hats and scarves and I even had to buy gloves because it was unbearably and uncomfortably cold.
    2. We missed out half the stops because ‘we ran out of time’ but the stops we did do, we were only allowed there for 5 minutes maximum before he would honk the horn to get people back - he almost chose to miss a toilet stop because of the bad time management but multiple people requested it, so he did stop in the end. We had no stops on the way back because of time, despite earlier being told we would go to those stops because we missed it on the way.
    3. The bus was not in good condition, he might strips were broken, air con panels hanging, toilet was out of order. Driver said that operations locked toilets because cleaners couldn’t be bothered to clean and it was easier to lock them… one of the main reasons I booked this bus was because of the toilet onboard, but it appears they’re not functional, despite it being listed as a current amenity on the website. The other main reason for booking was for the glass top roof, but it was so dirty and clouded over the whole time, you couldn’t actually see out of it.
    4. Pointless commentary.. driver was talking about how slow the car was going in front of him, then later said ‘he’s gone up to 80 so that’s good’. Also pointing out hay barns and saying that’s where hay is stored?? I know driver was just covering and is new to this route but there was a lack of knowledge and I don’t think I gained any knowledge.
It was just a really bad experience considering how much money I paid, I would never recommend this to anyone.

My wife and I and our two daughters wanted to visit Milford Sound and decided on the GreatSights Day Tour from Queenstown. The luxury glass-roofed coach was spacious and comfortable and our driver was professional, informative and entertaining. The trip to Milford Sound is exceptionally scenic including alpine forests, glacier valleys, cascading waterfalls and mountain peaks. The stop at Lake Te Anau, the largest lake in the South Island was enjoyable, as besides the lovely views, it gave us a chance to stretch our legs and have cappuccinos and croissants at the very nice tour supported local gift and coffee shop. The stop at Mirror Lakes was also enjoyable, enhanced by the wonderful views. Upon arrival at Milford Sound we boarded a luxurious and spacious catamaran with plenty of indoor seating as well as large outdoor decks that enable you to really appreciate the awesome splendour and beauty of the fiord, including the towering Mitre Peak and the spectacular Stirling and Bowen waterfalls plummeting into the sea. The live commentary provided during the cruise was interesting and informative and we were fortunate to see dolphins and seals. The lunch provided on board was tasty and fulfilling. After the cruise and at the start of our trip home, we were also fortunate to see a kea mountain parrot up close. Overall the tour was absolutely awesome and extremely memorable.

We thoroughly enjoyed our day trip from Queenstown to Milford Sound. The coach driver and tour guide Luke was awesome - quick witted, gave us great information on our way to the Sound and looked after everyone on board. The coach is comfortable and clean and has the glass roof which really makes taking in the scenery all the better. Lunch was handed out to everyone as we arrived at the wharf to board our catamaran for the cruise. The staff onboard were very friendly and welcoming. Be prepared with a rainproof jacket to make the most of your cruise. You will get wet under a waterfall at one point and everyone out there was loving it (but you need to have your own jacket or grab one from the ship cabin). It’s a long day for sure but there were frequent stops in the morning for toilet breaks and food plus some shopping along the way. Hopefully you will also see some dolphins on your cruise and seals too.

I wish I could review the food and the service/experience separately. I thought the service and the experience of Milford sounds was just amazing! In fact it is high up there in my list of wonders seen! Truly beautiful experience.
My only complaint was the food quality. It was honestly subpar and tasteless. I wish it was better because the service of the folks inside including the captain was truly top notch and that would have definitely deserved a 5 star rating.

we are a group of 5 looking forward to this milford coach tour trip in May 2023 which ended with great disappointment. it started off well with the pick up point from Rydges Hotel Queenstown which was book and with bus in time. The next pick up took unusually long with pick ups and mess up registration and the trip is extremely long and boring. One stop at Te Anau was short and brief and has to rush off to catch the milford sound cruise. Not much information provided and i was of the opinion to have lunch around nice area and not packet lunch box which is miserable. Lunch box does not look appetizing at all. The Milford cruise is nice overall but not the packet lunch. The problem starts with the return trip, it was definitely a rush trip with the driver driving recklessly with the over run timing. To add on worst is the return drive which the driver swerve around the route to make it back Queenstown and near miss was observed. I guess the whole tour group will have no contest over the dangerous drive on the return trip. The drop off point is a big issue it is book for Rydges Hotel and the driver simply drop all in the middle of nowhere in town. The weather was still drizzling and we have to find our own way back. In the end, we have to street hail 2 taxis to bring us back accommodation and the charges for less than 2km ride is $40 each. It is ridiculous for Great Sightw to simply change the drop off point without giving due consideration to the passengers who are stranded out of no where. Definitely not acceptable. We are just glad to be arrive Queenstown safely, overall it is totally unacceptable and definitely will not recommended this tour provider.

Kia Ora, We are sorry to hear that the tour was tiring for you, and you had some issues from your point of view. We believe that the tour may not be suitable to everyone and that is the reason we mention the itinerary, the duration of the tour and stops in the tour description. The Milford Sound tours operate to a tight timetable to make sure everyone has a chance to enjoy photo stops along the way. We may also experience some delays due to unforeseen circumstances which are out of our control. However, our drivers are always willing to make up for it. Additionally, thanks for your feedback regarding the bus driver. Our coaches are monitored for speed, and we have GPS tracking to ensure these trips are done safely. We would appreciate if you can contact us giving the booking details to investigate the case in order to our team address the situation and improve our services. The food comments will be also pass on to our operation team. You take the luck of the draw as far as the weather is concerned and this time, Milford Sound was very wet but spectacular nonetheless and the cat was very comfortable. Coach trip was entertaining with our Great Sights driver rather elaborate and loose with the facts.......but in a humorous manner ! Fantastic scenery on the way to and from Milford, very similar to Scotland. A most enjoyable trip but take the sea dog tablets.....for the coach journey.

Kia Ora Gordon M, Thank you for writing about your wonderful experience! Milford Sound is spectacular indeed, and I believe it is more beautiful in the pouring rain. It is the only place I know of that looks better in a bad weather. We're glad to hear that you enjoyed the coach ride and the cruise. Thank you for choosing us and we hope to see you again soon! All the best for your future travels, Maye and the team at GreatSights

The day tour with Great Sights from Queenstown to Milford Sound was definitely worth it. Our driver was David and he was very informative, and wasn’t afraid to have a joke. David has many years experience and was able to provide a lot of information about the area. The trip itself is a very long day as in total you’re gone for around 12 hours but the views the whole way are amazing.

The cruise was very cold but we did go on a day that was forecast for rain. The mountains and waterfalls in Milford sound are amazing to see in person and we even got to see some seals and penguins.

All in all it is a great experience and worth doing if you’re visiting Queenstown. Plenty of picture stops along the way and if you get a great driver like we did, you learn a lot as well.

    This is an odd one.
The Sound itself is simply breathtaking and is a must-see if you’re based in the South of the South Island.
The Real NZ packed lunch was excellent and the commentary en route from our driver, Craig, was witty, knowledgeable and a real time-passer.

The issue and reason for only 3 stars is the 5hr each way on the coach from Queenstown.

Real NZ have a glass roofed coach and you miss no views… but 5 hours each way is a killer.

If you are thinking of this trip there are a couple of options:
Base yourself in Te Anu and reduce the journey to 2.5 hrs each way.
Drive yourself and get onto the overnight cruise experience to spread the journey…

You can fly, though this is very costly. In this case Helicopters are recommended since you will get to land on a glacier on the way!

Kia Ora Jonathan! Thank you for taking time to write us a review. Our company offers options to visit Milford that do not require 5 hours of driving. However, the one-day trip to Milford Sound is the most popular as people may make the most of their time. Apart from it, we hope that you enjoyed it:)
