What to expect
Following hotel pickup in Queenstown, board the luxury coach for a leisurely drive to Milford Sound, part of the UNESCO-listed Fiordland National Park. Departing the shores of Lake Wakatipu, travel through the scenic countryside to Te Anau for a brief lunch break before continuing along the renowned Milford Road. Your driver provides informative narration and lets you stretch your legs during short walks and photo stops en route to your destination. Upon arrival, board the Milford Mariner for your Milford Sound overnight cruise. The purpose-built vessel is designed for the fiords, with an observation lounge and large open decks to view the many landmarks, such as Mitre Peak, accompanied by commentary from the nature guide on board. Keep your camera on hand as you pass waterfalls, rainforests, and glacier-carved cliffs, and search for South Island marine life such as New Zealand fur seals, Fiordland penguins, and bottlenose dolphins. In the afternoon, the Milford Mariner anchors overnight in the tranquil waters of Harrison Cove. Enjoy kayaking or exploring the shoreline on the tender craft with a guide, or just relax on deck. Then sate your appetite with a delicious 3-course buffet dinner, served in the spacious dining saloon. If you’d like, you can purchase a drink at the licensed, onboard bar before retiring to your private single or twin-share en-suite cabin. The next morning, enjoy a cooked breakfast and further cruising before returning to Milford Sound Wharf. After disembarkation, either return to Queenstown by coach or by scenic flight (if upgrade selected). Optional Upgrade (Coach/Cruise/Fly): End your Milford Sound cruise on a high note aboard a one-way flight from Milford to Queenstown. After discovering Milford Sound from the sea, board the plane for a spectacular aerial view of alpine scenery including glaciers, rivers, and rainforests. A courtesy shuttle delivers you from Milford Wharf to the airstrip located only minutes away. Please note: Flights are weather dependent. If due to unfavorable weather conditions the flight does not operate, you will return to Queenstown by luxury coach and be refunded the difference.

Best part of our holiday and worth every penny!
Feb 2020 • Couples
We took the return coach trip from Queenstown and then the Milton Mariner for the overnight cruise. This was a full two days but we were only the second overnight to run following the rain closure so very lucky to be there!

Che our coach driver entertained us with his interesting and amusing commentary on the outward trip. On arrival on the boat we were offered sandwiches and fresh muffins and hot drinks were on tap for the whole trip.

We can’t fault the crew. They worked really hard as a team and were impressive to watch. Bene did the commentary when out in the lake and also on the tender that took us for a little boat trip. His knowledge of geology, history and wildlife was impressive!

We had a lovely buffet meal in the evening and plenty of choice at breakfast. Cabins were very clean and comfortable.

My husband went out on a guided kayak paddle and a few brave soles had a night swim. Being there for the sunset and sunrise made the whole experience magical and worth every penny. If we knew the weather was going to be so perfect we may have booked a scenic flight back to Queenstown. In all this was a fabulous experience and one we would highly recommend to others.

Overnight Cruise of a lifetime
Apr 2019 • Couples
From the bus ride with driver Cameron to all the staff on the ship I felt so comfortable and learnt many things about New Zealand - the culture and the environment. It was a wonderful way to spend a night on our honeymoon. The three course dinner was amazing followed in the morning by a great buffet breakfast. Would recommend booking im advance in order not to miss out on this experience.

Milford Sound Mariner Overnight Cruise - Excellent
Dec 2018 • Couples
Very pleased with the way 'Real Journeys' conducted their cruise.
My wife and I were picked up at The Scenic hotel by taxi and taken directly to the Real Journeys centre. This was arranged for us and we just had to be at the hotel reception ready.
The coach journey seemed early initially as it set off at 9.30 yet did not need to be at Milford Sound until 4.15. The reason for this became apparent once we had set off with our fantastic driver, Brad. We stopped at many great and interesting places for rest breaks and photo opportunities, so we had a tour before the tour!!. Brad was a wealth of knowledge about NZ, nature, history as well as being a good and steady driver.
Organisation for the Milford Mariner was perfect. The ship was in great condition, cabins were clean and functional, bed was comfortable and gave a good night's sleep.
Food was good and plentiful and care had been taken to put like minded people together on tables for 6.
Lovely cruise in the evening with a stop for those who wanted to do 'activities'. Scenery was stunning.
Following morning, after an early breakfast, further cruising down the sound and into the Tasman Sea, where we were most fortunate to see a humpback whale.
Docked about 9.30 and back on coach trip to Queenstown with just a couple of stops on the return journey.
Overall very good value for money and a most memorable 2 days.
Definitely recommended.

Did Milford and Doubtful; best company in the Fiordlands!
Oct 2018 • Couples
My girlfriend and I first went with RealJourneys on the Doubtful Sound overnight cruise, and simply loved every single element of it. The food, the crew, the course, everything from top to bottom exceeded our expectations. Because of that, we decided to do the overnight for the Milford Sound as well... suffice to say, RealJourneys is 2 for 2 in our book! I really dont think there is a single thing I can come up with that didnt match or exceed expectations.

Next time though, I wouldnt mind some dolphins :)

Glorious
Milford Sound is a stunning location, best experienced in a leisurely and receptive manner, not rushed and hurried. So why try to fit it in after a long drive when you'll only have a hour or so to appreciate a natural marvel? The tidy and neat Milford Mariner is the perfect answer. After a guided exploration and a top buffet dinner, sleep overnight actually on the Sound before more magnificent photo opportunities the next morning. Wonderful, helpful staff, too.

Iconic and memorable
Apr 2018 • Couples
We saw everything Milford Sound has to offer: sunshine in the evening and the typical rain / wind / mist in the morning which meant that waterfalls appeared from everywhere! Cabins aren't very big, but it's only for one night; food and drink were plentiful. I suggest you add on the underwater viewing gallery: it is safe and secure and has a superb selection of rarely-seen marine life. One other tip: drive to Milford, don't get the coach from Te Anau. This will enable you to stop for photo opportunities wherever you want to and - despite what it says on the road signs - you can park directly outside the port building after 4pm if you get a pass from Real Journeys reception.

Exceeded expectations
Mar 2018 • Couples
OK, there's an element of luck in a tour like this, and we had great luck. Sunshine and good visibility the first day, smooth water, and then light steady rain all night that fired up the waterfalls for the next morning. Our bus driver, Carl, was fantastic, a true adventurer who could share his enthusiasm and knowledge in a fun way. The boat crew was super friendly and accommodating and the food was top notch. All in all a trip to remember forever.

Overnight Cruise is definitely worth it
Jan 2018 • Couples
We wanted to see Milford Sound - but wasnt sure what to book as there are 100+ options. Luckily we found this overnight cruise with transportation from Queenstown. The bus picked us up at a bus stop right next to our hotel, which made it super easy. As other pointed out the drive as long, but filled with lots of stops and luckily the bus was not full so there was enough extra space for everyone.

The cruise itself was great, you get underway pretty quick and experience waterfalls in no time. We opted for the kayaks to get out on the water, it was very enjoyable -- there is plenty of area to kayak in peace away from others. Our kayak guide was very cool - but she made sure to keep an eye on everyone. We never felt rushed on the kayaks which was great after a long bus ride. They do have two tender boats if you dont want to kayak - our cruise was pretty much split between kayakers and boaters.

Crew member Brad was really helpful on several occasions on the cruise - we really appreciated his suggestions and quick fun wit. He really made us feel welcome aboard and was happy to answer any question.

The cabins are very clean and have a full shower, so you can clean up after Kayaking if you happen to get wet. The food was above our expectations for small boat & quick cruise. They do assign you seating at dinner, but breakfast is freestyle. We met some very nice folks at dinner so we didnt mind being assigned a table.

We opted to fly back to Queenstown - it was well worth it if you have the budget. The views were amazing and our pilot was professional but very easy going - making everyone feel comfortable.

I think staying overnight makes the whole experience less rushed and you have plenty of time to really get to see Milford Sound.

Good way to see the sound but ...
Dec 2017 • Couples
I was really excited about this tour based on the description but, while it was fine, I was a little disappointed. Unexpectedly the bus ride from Queenstown was great. We had a terrific driver/guide and they stop frequently for coffee/restroom breaks/short tour walks. The boat facilities were very good but the boat staff needs some training including the captain with respect to guest interaction. A good example of needed training - the bowsprit of the boat with the anchor mechanism is roped off and indicates staff only presumably for safety concerns. 1/3 of our staff treated it as their private viewing area (they were not working on the anchors) for the sightseeing while the guests were jockeying for position in the allowed spaces. The food on board was decent and met expectations. The kayak trip is primarily a 'follow-me' trip without any discussion and there are a lot of sand flies that I would have appreciated a warning about ahead of time. I'd still recommend the trip but would be careful to set low expectations.

Bits of advice about the trip
Dec 2017 • Couples
We took the coach cruise flight option .

Coach left on time and was comfortable but some of the seats were broken and so the recline was continuous . This upset some of the people sitting behind us. Cameron coach driver gave a pretty continuous informational commentary . If you want to break and want to sleep bring some ear plugs and headphones.

It takes all day to get to Milford. Then yo7 get on the boat. Bring warm wet weather gear so you can stand under the amazing waterfall with a change of clothes . You then get a kayaking or motorboat ride around part of the sound. Take the chance to jump into the water for a swim it’s cold but there are prizes at dinner for being a swimmer.

be ready to get up very early because the first light on the sound is spectacular.

Next is a two hour cruise which is really very beautiful.

Next is a two hour cruise which is really very beautiful You get off the boat at about 9 AM and either jump on a coach for six hour ride or go to the airport for a flight home.

The flight is really worth it. the views are just unbelievable as you fly out over the sound and over the glaziers and mountains. Back to Queenstown in time for lunch. Very small 7 seat plane with a good commentary of the sights.
