Like stars in the night but with glow worms!
Well organized; friendly, courteous and knowledgeable staff. The walk in the cave, the force of the water, the boat ride, the glow worms... We loved the experience. Great place.

No Doubt that it was a great experience
We did this cruise today and we're really pleased that we chose Doubtful Sound over Milford Sound as the road to MS has been closed for a week. It was a 7 hour experience and even though it was a cold, wet day, the boats and coach were warm and comfortable. Food could be pre-ordered and collected at Lake Manapouri or you could bring your own. There was free tea and coffee aboard the boat taking us across the lake or you could purchase other beverages. Food and drinks could also be purchased on the boat which took us around the sound. All the staff were friendly and helpful and we picked up lots of interesting information from the commentary. The scenery is spectacular and it is just a lovely, relaxing day.

      Wonderful sight to see
Amazing to see the cave formations and glow worms in their natural environment. Tour guides seemed to be new to guiding this experience so were lacking a little confidence so would have been good to have them partnered with someone who was a bit more experienced to give more details about the workings of the caves.

      Great family activity
Once in a lifetime experience. Can be scary for young children as caves are dark and wet. The boat ride reminded me of Willy Wonkas chocolate boat ride. Boat ride relaxing and informative.

Glow worm tour well worth it
Alex our guide was well informed and shared his knowledge with excitement. We enjoyed seeing and learning more about the glow worms. The sheer volume/power/beauty of the water and the caves themselves were equally impressive. The pathway construction to enable this tour was amazing. We also enjoyed the boat ride to the caves, the informative Q&A and nature walk.

Outstanding value-for-money experience in a gorgeous location
After a fun drive to Te Anau from Queenstown, we were welcomed onto the new catamaran by Chris (captain) and Warren (first mate). Warren provided useful and interesting commentary on the ride and once at the cave, the professional cave team took over and ensured our safety and enjoyment. The water was flowing wildly and the glow worms looked like stars in the sky. After the cave we had refreshments and Toby gave a very interesting video presentation on the life cycle of a glow worm. On the ride back everyone was happy and relaxed. It's a truly great value-for-money experience that I would recommend to everyone as long as you can bend a little as the entrance to the cave is low. Enjoy.

      A great experience.
It was an excellent trip! A fantastic experience. The staff were great. All commentaries on the 3 legs were exemplary and very enjoyable. We wouldn't order the cheese platter again, very expensive for what you get. Much better to go with the food available on the cruise.

      Really great experience
Overall, this really exceeded my expectations. I found the glowworms to be interesting, but the whole experience from the walk through the (very wet) caves and the sensory depravation boat ride in the dark, all really made this value for money. I recommend.

      Magical!
The glow worm caves themselves are absolutely stunning, one of the coolest things I've ever seen. The forest around the caves is also beautiful. Minus one star for the guides being very scripted/bored and the "nature walk" being a five metre path to a pavilion with some posters then we had to leave after about two minutes.

      A truly amazing experience.
We went in August so the worms were not at peak activity, however this was still one of the highlights of the trip. Tour guides were great, explaining what the glow worms were and fun facts about the caves. No pictures allowed (your phone wouldn't be able to anyways in that dark) but I almost preferred it. It was a surreal experience floating in a little boat in the pitch black, the only sound was the water gushing through the caves. As your eyes adjusted more and more of these little blue dots appeared. It felt like you were floating in the void of space. I loved it. If I return to New Zealand I will definitely be returning.

Fun, beautiful and well worth it.
Amazing trip! The boat across was very scenic and the guide had great facts about what you were looking at. Once we arrived, we were given a very informative talk about the glow worms. Our guide Heath was fantastic taking us through the cave, with lots of fun facts and jokes along the way while seeing an amazing underground formation. The glow worms themselves were absolutely beautiful. A trip myself, and my family will treasure forever. Thanks RealNZ!!

      Dont waste your money.
Do not waste your money. You cant take photos. Such a waste of time and effort. The only good part of it was the talk at the end of the tour while you are drinking a not so great cup of hot chocolate. The talk was fantasic and learnt a lot but still not worth it.

      Great tour
Great trip with RealNZ to see glow worms. Well-run and informative. Went with kids aged 5 and 8, they were perfectly fine with staying quiet/silent when observing the glowworms, but keep this in mind if you are going with younger children who might struggle with this!

Really enjoyed our Doubtful Sound trip with Deano our bus driver. It was a long journey but the trip was broken up by a morning coffee stop on the way to Mannapouri followed by the cruise across the lake before the bus journey to Deep Cove (with several stops for great photo opportunities). The Sound itself was beautiful and there was a point where the captain asked everyone to be silent to appreciate the area. Unfortunately one persons near us decided to take noisy photos which spoiled it to an extent but overall the trip was wonderful. Having done Milford as well )see other review) I would do Doubtful until the Milford Road is fully repaired

Amazing views of Glacial Fjords, Majestic mountains, opaline waters and swirling cloud formations. We normally choose small group tours, but the only way to see Doubtless is large group. That said, Real Journeys did a great job of coordinating a large crowd across 4 busses, 2 boats, and 12 hours. The breathtaking scenery and comprehensive history lessons on board the boats make this a must see excursion. Wear layers, bring big spray and pre-order lunch when you book the tour.

A spectacular journey by coach, boat, coach and boat ( in that order) and then return. Superb organisation of the event from the early morning taxi pick-up at the hotel right through to the end. Brian, our driver, was friendly, helpful, informative and amusing; drivers and guides in other parts of the journey also performed to a high standard. Except by sea, there's no way to Doubtful Sound except by this route. It's a must.

Upon a heart-breaking last minute cancellation of our Milford Sound tour by a different tour company, we were able to secure this tour for the next day on short notice. As "consolation prizes" go, it was a pretty good tour. Ian Frew was our very funny, informative and entertaining "Nature Guide and Coach Operator" who almost made me forget my disappointment in missing the Milford tour - seems New Zealand is not quite ready for the influx of tourists and there is some difficulty in maintaining healthy staff to accommodate all the tours they are booking. Very happy RealNZ was able to come through on extremely short notice. This tour takes you on a lovely coach and boat ride(s) to some scenic spots. Ian totally made this worthwhile, props to him.

Our travel agent booked this tour as part of our overall package and we probably didn’t pay sufficient attention. So Doubtful Sound is very scenic and the staff at RealNZ are very nice and helpful however, for us it was a bit too much travelling. If Queenstown is your first stop in New Zealand, the trip is probably worth it, however we had driven from the top of North Island to Queenstown and seen lots of great scenery on the way. We were picked up from our hotel at 0720 and the coach set off around 0745 to do a few more pickups before setting off around 0800. It’s a two hour drive to the lake with an extensive commentary and then 50 minutes across the lake for a 40 minute coach transfer across the southern alps to the cruise itself which then takes around 2.5 hours. We saw some seals and possibly some penguins. It’s worth noting that if you’re a nervous passenger the transfer is on a gravel road with a 1:6 gradient in part. You then travel back, arriving in Queenstown around 8pm. There was a good packed lunch as part of the package and the boat has a good selection of drinks and snacks, taking credit cards. In retrospect, we probably would have opted for the Milford sound tour as it’s more convenient.

Full day. Starting in Queenstown with a 2 hour bus ride, 1 hour boat ride, 1 hour bus ride and about 3 hours cruising through Doubtful Sound (then all of that back) and it was 100% worth it. Every bus & boat ride was filled with the most spectacular views and also information. The views you see seem unreal and take your breath away. Pictures and videos don’t do justice for this beauty. I am so thankful I was able to experience this with my husband. I never knew there was such beauty. 360 views everywhere. Literally everywhere you look is incredible.

My favorite part was when they stopped and turned off the boat and had everyone silent. You could only hear the natural noises. It was an amazing few minutes.

This was an amazing experience from start to the end. Our coach driver Dino was an absolute gem, providing live commentaries. The tour comprised of a coach ride to lake Manapouri (2 hrs), on a catamaran in lake manapouri (50 mins), then a coach ride on Wilmot pass (50 mins) and at last a boat ride on Doubtful sound for 3 hrs. Each part of the journey was a different experience.

Thoroughly enjoyed our trip to this natural wonder filled with beautiful sights. Our bus driver, Brian, was extremely knowledgeable about the fjord, forest, sights and development of the power project. Disappointing that we did not get to see any dolphins or seals but we did get to see penguins. Very well organized. Appreciated that tour company did not try to sell souvenirs or photos. A very long day (13 hrs) but well worth it. Lunch box food was good and plentiful. Also, at 6'9", I found coaches comfortable!

We really enjoyed our Doubtful Sound cruise. The experience from start to finish was very professional and well timed. The bus to boat to bus to cruise process was seamless with minimal waiting. Even though the falls were not exploding, it was still a magical experience. We were at Milford Sound the day before and the falls were on fire. But, we had to deal with driving rain. So this experience was different and a nice compliment to Milford. Highly recommend this cruise.

Doubtful Sound is WONDERFUL, and the scenery on the drive is diverse stunning. There was a lot of commentary, but it was all very informative and fun.
The staff was great. From the front desk to the guides, we had excellent service and felt well taken care of.
We pre-ordered lunch, and were glad we did. Otherwise we would have been quite hungry. There is a café at the stop before the first boat, but you don't have much time to go to the bathroom, order, and wait for food, so ordering a pre-packed lunch is a great option. If you can't find where to pick up your lunch, they will load it on the boat for you, you just have to ask. There is a sign that we didn't see until the boat was pulling away, but they had our meals on the boat anyway. Thankfully!
If you are trying to decide on Doubtful vs Milford, I believe the main differences are that Milford is more spectacular in terms of mountain height, and Doubtful has more waterfalls. SO MANY WATERFALLS! I also have heard that Doubtful is less touristy. We didn't do Milford, but this is what we heard from people on our tour who did both.
It is a long day though, and it will likely rain, so pack for cold/wet. We spent a lot of time in our jackets, especially because we chose to sit outside on the boat rides. Totally worth it though!! I wish I had packed a scarf, beanie, or something to cover my ears!
Also, if you get seasick, take meds. The boat is mostly steady, but as it got closer to the sea it definitely started rocking quite a bit.
Overall, I would 100% recommend this company for a Doubtful Sound tour, or any other tour they may offer. We had a great day.
