We drive through historic Skippers Canyon and explain the goldrush history of it. Short walks and plenty of photo stops are a feature of the tour. At Skippers School, a picnic is prepared. We spend about 30 min at Skippers School before we head back to Queenstown.

Stunning scenery, superb views, amazing history.
Wow! This is an amazing tour, promoted as unforgettable - it certainly is! This is a small group, half day, personalized tour in a four wheel drive vehicle taking you a scenic and historical gorge, on one of the worlds most dangerous roads. So not for the faint hearted. However, I never felt at risk and totally trusted the skills of my experienced driver, who carefully manoeuvred to the side when encountering another vehicle . This gravel road was carved by hand by miners over 140 years ago after gold was discovered and is made from a very narrow cut in the middle of a sheer cliff face, along side the Shotover River. This place is seeped in history from the gold rush days 140 years ago to the farming of today and Greg, our tour guide, was an excellent source of knowledge. photos don't do it justice, its definitely worth experiencing it in person.

          The best photo ops
I started out, thinking we would be driving in the Canyon, but soon realized that we would be driving on a narrow mountain rim road. I was nervous and excited at the same time!! Our driver, Wolfe, was reassuring and a good driver. He made many photo op stops and the picnic was perfect, best coffee too, but wine or tea was offered He explained areas of interest very well and my fear was dissipated as we travelled and saw the most beautiful scenery, all 4 of us felt it was the most worthwhile tour to have done, loved it all! We booked it as an extra tour, through our Grand Pacific 19 day tour, Janine Courneyea

          One of world's scariest roads...
If the driver had not mentioned, I wouldn't have known Shippers Canyon Road is listed in many websites as a dangerous road. The drive up from Queenstown is scenic, overlooking the Shotover River at many points. I enjoyed getting out of the 4WD for the short walks and the little picnic near the old school.

An unforgettable experience, what a beautiful landscape.
We did the track our selves with our 4 wheel drive. The very narrow road along the splendid rough gorge is most of the time only one car wide and leads along deep and steep abysses. But the landscape is stunning and, just like us, the cars we came across took each other into account by waiting at slightly wider sections of the road. To drive this road you need some courage. But the reward is beautiful scenery and views of the gorge. Eventually we reached the place where jetboats sailed the wider part of the canyon and river. This is done by groups of tourists through the Skipper organization that operates from Queenstown. We met a guy there who was washing out the sand of the river bank, he founs some gold slivers. That was without doubt the reason for the construction of this road in the year 1850.

          A favourite place
I love this canyon with its spectacular scenery. MY second time through and loved it just as much as previously. Thank you Willy for the bus ride and commentary, and the photos taken while we were jet boating.

          Beautiful canyon - excellent tour
This is a very nice 4WD tour of a beautiful canyon and river. Our driver and guide was a German guy - really knowledgeable about the area and wildlife. The tour included tea or coffee with tasty cheese and crackers mid-morning. The views are wonderful.

Easily the highlight of our trip
We went on a 2-week trip to NZ in a big group of 12 persons, and this was one of the tours we booked, which they gladly accomodated in two vehicles as a private tour. We planned our trip around top-rated tours in tripadvisor, and yet this was easily, easily, the highlight of our trip. Definitely a hidden gem as it does not seem to be on the top of the to-do list of many, but our experience with them suggests it should really be. Wolfy was thoroughly entertaining.

Small group 4x4 tour of Skippers Canyon
This was a fantastic day. Our guide Greg was so informative. You could tell he truly loved this place and so did we. I would rate it the best tour we did in New Zealand. It was well worth it and I consider good value for money. We stopped at many places for photo opportunities and loved the wine and cheese on the way along with tea and home made biscuits. All very good.

          Amazing Tour
Skippers Canyon is considered the eight most dangerous canyon in the World. You will do a 4x4 tour through narrow paths, bridges, mountains surrounded by trees and rivers. It is an unique experience that will transport you to the golden years outside Queenstown. You will have the chance to try to find gold with the same tools and the way the gold finders did many years ago. A different experience. If you are visiting Queenstown you can’t missed it! You will enjoy it!!

Stunning scenery guided with such fun, enthusiasm and knowledge
Our guide, Wolfie, was an amazing leader, driver, and all round fabulous guy. We had a great time enjoying good company, wine ( part of our tour on one of the stops) and humour in the most spectacular surroundings. We came away with some superb photos. The four hours of our trip just flew by! I can not recommend this trip highly enough.

          The real back country tour
We had heard for years about The Skippers Road, however the reality far out does the stories told about it. The ride is over a 20 Kilometre dirt road that is steep, rough and travels along cliff sides, but what a thrill! Arthur our driver/guide certainly knows the road and the areas history, the former being very evident when he drove what seemed like suicidally close to the road edge (not in reality) and stop in precarious places for a chance to take spectacular photos, even if to remind you of the ruggedness of the country. The end of the road, for this tour, is at the abandoned settlement of Skippers, where the only building left standing is the restored school house. It is quiet and a lovely place to have morning tea. We did have great weather and I could well imagine this being a completely different experience in inclement weather.

          A relaxing yet thrilling ride
The view was decent, but perhaps even more memorable was the narrow mountain road, one side of which leads to a steep downward slope. We often feared the prospect of falling down the mountain, but fortunately the driver was experienced and drove slowly. Our tour guide, Arthur, gave us a comfortable amount of information as well as opportunities to take good photos. He was also polite and punctual. Do prepare for dust, though, especially on windy days!

          Fantastic Individual Tour
We were picked up literally at our doorstep by Arthur who took us off on our tour to Skippers Canyon. It was fantastic to hear all the history of the road - something you wouldn't have got if you drove yourself. Arthur is full of local knowledge and the history of the area and it was fantastic to hear how the early gold miners lived in the back country. We had two teenagers with us who normally prefer to be "on their devices" but they both were enthralled by Arthur's stories and the surrounding countryside. The school at Skippers has been fantastically restored and it is such a shame the cottage burnt down. It is interesting to see how the pioneers lived back then and imagine what life was like for them. Highly recommended tour. We loved it! Thanks so much!

          Magestic Tour
Three fellow small-coach tour travelers along with my husband and me took this amazing side tour through the incredible Skipper’s Canyon and were treated to jaw-dropping scenery at every turn of the twisting 4-wheel-drive road. A warning sign at the entrance to the canyon states that many insurance companies will not insure vehicles traveling this road, and at the end of our trip, the guide mentioned the fact that this road is ranked in the top 10 “most dangerous roads” in the world. Had we known that, we might not have taken the trip, but then we would have missed what most surely should be ranked as one of the 10 “most incredible views” accessible from a car. The mountains are the incredible stars of the show—rugged, jagged, gorgeous giants luring us ever onward. If you have the chance to visit Skipper’s Canyon outside Queensland, go for it! It’s a journey with the only possible regret being passing up the chance.

Many people asked me why I was booking a tour of NZ rather than doing a self drive. This tour to Skippers Canyon is the reason as I am absolutely sure that either I would never have found this and/or I would have given up driving on the shale tracks long before reaching the best parts.

Great experienced drivers with good knowledge made this tour exceptional. The narrow shale track is not for the faint hearted as the slips and sheer drops at the side are both spectacular and daunting. On reaching the school house at the top of the track, coffee and wine were served with nibbles - very much like a sundowner on an African safari - and most welcome. The aerial view of the Shotover river with the jet boats hurtling through the gorges was spectacular from such a height as was the view of the miners' tracks, now used by mountain bikers, coursing through the valleys.

Absolutely stunning and a must do.

If you are fortunate enough to have Wolfie as your driver and guide, then you are in for a treat. He picked us up from our hotel in a comfortable 4WD minibus before 8.30am and returned us nearly five hours later. Wolfie’s driving skills, intricate knowledge of the area covered and his own stories and memories was outstanding. He gave us regular stops for photo opportunities and even offered to take snaps himself if he thought that he was in a better position. Thoroughly recommended.

Gordon, our guide and driver could not have provided a more enjoyable, comprehensive, informative and accommodating morning for our group. His local knowledge and driving skills combined into a first class commentary for the entire journey through spectacular scenery and jaw dropping vistas. A trip well worth making for anyone visiting Queenstown.

This was an incredible tour. We were part of a small group in a single van. After leaving the main paved road, we got on to a dirt/gravel road recommended for four wheel drive vehicles only (and may I add along with an experience driver for this area). The road was by in large single lane. When approaching an oncoming vehicle, one or the other would generally have to pull aside so the other could get by. The views were spectacular. These were views that you could never see by staying on the main road. Our driver would stop along the way where views were exceptional so that we could get out to take photos. The driver was very knowledgeable about the area and shared much information about what we were seeing. At the highest point of our journey, we stopped at the site of an old school house, homestead, and cemetery. This was (I believe) the highest point for most guided tours of the canyon. It was also a break point where we could visit the school house, use the potty, stretch our legs, and have a "high tea". Our driver opened up the back of the van, folded out a table, and provided coffee, tea, wine, and "high tea" snacks (such as crackers and cheese and cake pastries). There was another tour group at the top when we arrived. That group had 6 - 8 vehicles and they all traveled together. Each vehicle held maybe 6 passengers plus the river. I would highly recommend our "Unforgettable" tour. It was one of the highlights of our NZ trip and would repeat if in Queenstown again.

Unforgettable Skippers Canyon Tour went above and beyond expectations! We called really last minute and they were able to accommodate two of us in a private tour of the Canyon (which is absolutely breathtaking by the way!). We had freedom over our experience and we’re able to ask for specific spots to take photos. Our guide led us to the best photo spots. He was very knowledgeable and had impressive driving skills. Once we mentioned we were LOTR fans he made sure to point out filming locations and showed us images directly from the movie so we could see exact locations. Would definitely recommend to everyone!

A great tour led by Wolfy, despite the winding, narrow road you feel in good hands with him.
Unique impressions of Skipper's Canyon, small group, frequent photo stops and the Lord of the Rings fans didn't miss out either. Snack with coffee and biscuits, then we were given excellent New Zealand wine, crackers with cheese were served with it, all in all a successful trip of around 4 hours.

Skippers Canyon was a place that really drew my interest when I started researching the Queenstown area. The scenery looked spectacular but the road looked terrifying. So I decided to hire this tour so that I could watch the scenery and leave the driving to a professional.

Greg was our driver. He picked us up right on time and was a very friendly fellow. Turns out he was also very knowledgeable about the history of Skippers Canyon and the S C road. As we drive through the canyon he gave us the entire history of the people, places and things that made the canyon far more than a pretty sight. It came alive.

My only disappointment had nothing to do with Greg or the tour company. It was the disappointment of seeing how mankind, in pursuit of gold really decimated the upper portions of the canyon.

The drive is certainly not for the faint of heart. There were several times when there were audible gasps from passengers as Greg pulled over to the side of the road near the edge to park. But we developed great confidence in Greg’s driving as the trip wore on.

This was the best thing we did in Queenstown. Absolutely amazing views. Spent @ 4 hours on the backroads w/ Del (4wdexpeditions.nz) in a super comfortable Range Rover. Great driving skills needed!! Learned a lot about the area, the gold mining era, the area now, etc. Fabulous 1/2 day outside the hubbub of downtown Queenstown (which is wonderful too).
