        Fabulous guide and glorious scenery
We started our day with a fantastic guide, Dani. She is seriously the best driver we have ever had anywhere in the world. Safe, knowledgeable, clear, fun, helpful. We were blown away by her sense of humor and organization of the day. We had all ages and abilities in our group. One heli-hiker and one heli-scenic cruiser. It took five minutes to drop off the heli-hiker at the airport just outside the entrance to the park. On the day we were there, the skies were blue and never clouded over. Dani made sure people were prepared for the sun. She also spoke with each group to determine how long they wanted to hike. Several only wanted to be on the Hooker Trail for an hour or two. So she made arrangements to meet them, and transport one to the Heli-scenic flight and another group to Mt. Cook for lunch. Then she came back to get the rest of us three hours later. Three hours allowed us enough time to hike to the end, have 20-25 minutes for our bagged lunch and then hike back. We are in our 60’s and fit (and had trail shoes on our feet). On the way back, we picked up our Heli-hiker and still had plenty of time to top at the Salmon farm and for ice cream on the way back to Queenstown. It is a long day, but a great day with a variety of experiences and wonderful stories from Dani. It was one of our best days in NZ.

Great way to get from Christchurch to Mount Cook
We travelled from Christchurch to Mount Cook with Cheeky Kiwi Travel, in a minibus. Pick up was late, because of a problem with the original vehicle, which was unfortunate. However, the rest of the journey was very good. The guide/driver was excellent, talking almost continually about the various places we were travelling through, giving great information. We stopped off several times on route, and the scenery for most of the journey was spectacular. This is a great alternative to those not wishing to drive while on holiday.

        Easy, full filling, stunning.
Fantastic tour to say the least. Well organized with proper bus stops for coffee/bathroom breaks, sightseeing spots and photographs, delicious lunch and of course absolutely stunning boat ride and a flight. Pure joy. Wonderful guides. Very relaxing yet reach and full filling tour. Must do!!!

        DONT DO IT
Our trip from Queenstown to Mt cook was good and our guide was amazing. But our buses abd driver/tour guide changed for the next leg. There were only few stops made for quick toilet breaks as the driver was running late. He detoured thru inland and all we see was cows and sheep. We had a Maori commentator and she kept talking for first couple of hours. The experience was terrible, no value for money and I have requested for refund.

        Worth it.
Overall an exceptional tour. Stops were great. Food options for purchase were really nice. Bus was comfy. Only downside was the long wait for the helicopter and plane ride. Jeff was a very informative and friendly driver who dropped us off at our accommodation at the end of a very long but enjoyable day.

A beautiful day with a challenging trek (for me)
The only bad part of the trip was time amount of time available for the Hooker Valley Trek but it was understandable given the distance from Queenstown. While some of our group made it the full length, the headwinds going up the valley, my short legs with new knees and our desire for lots of photos of this beautiful location kept us about 1/4 mile from the end before we had to turn back. It was an absolutely gorgeous day which translated into many stops for pictures. The stop to pick up heli hike folks also impacted the time though not too terribly and also understandable given the need to make the trips more economical for everyone. The stop at the Salmon farm was interesting though I fear it gave some in our group the feeling that they could sit and eat something which took even more time!

        Very poor time management
I have booked several trips via Tripadvisor relying on 5 star reviews and have not been disappointed until I took this trip. Cheeky Kiwi offers two 12 hour day trips to Mount Cook, one for the Hooker Valley (HV) hike and another which includes various other options like flight-seeing etc. in addition to the HV hike. Since my husband and I were only interested in the HV hike we booked this trip assuming that since no other options were offered in this tour, there would be no time wasted in detours to the Mount Cook airport for drop-offs and we would have the full 3 hours designated in the itinerary to complete this highly recommended hike . Well that did not pan out. We reached the Mount Cook area at 10:50am and the driver stated that we would be heading to the airport to drop off the only 2 heli-hikers in the group of 12. Due to the airport detour we were not dropped off to the start of the HV hike until 11:10 am. The driver then instructed us to be back at the starting point at 2 pm. We were surprised that we were not being given the full 3 hours for the hike that was stated in the itinerary but realized that the airport detour had short-changed us a valuable 20 minutes. Since we had only been given 2hours and 50 minutes, we actually were unable to complete the full hike and turned back before the third suspension bridge in order to return punctually at 2pm. No sign of the bus! We sat on a rock in the cold, windy parking lot until the bus arrived at 2:20pm! I told the driver that we had cut short the hike in order to rush back by 2 pm. If she had properly communicated a 2:20 pm return time we could have comfortably completed the hike which was the sole reason why we booked the trip. She mumbled something about “sometimes there are unforeseen delays”. We continued to wait on the bus while the bus driver looked for the last two stragglers who showed up at 2:28pm and asked if they could use the restrooms! The driver made another 10 min rest stop at the Visitor Center to accommodate this request. So now the total time wasted is 20 min airport detour + 20 minute late bus arrival + 20 minutes to accommodate 2 stragglers. Despite this 1 hour of unproductive time we were still back in Queenstown within 12 hours. Time management on this tour is beyond pathetic. My husband and I stayed 2 additional nights in Queenstown (cost USD 500) just to be able to do this day trip . Add to that USD300 for the tour itself. 12 hours on the tour for a paltry 2hours and 50 minutes at the main attraction. Very disappointed and frustrated because precious time was mismanaged. Would not recommend. Skeptical about these 5 star reviews unless we got stuck with a poorly trained, inexperienced driver.

        Queenstown to Mt. Cook tour
Tour guide, Jonathan, was very knowledgeable and friendly. Very small group so he was able to tailor to our interests. Ask him about Shrek, the lost sheep! Lovely hikes too. We stayed in Mt. Cook at the lodge so one way tour was perfect for plans.

        Queenstown to Mt. Cook
Great trip and knowledgeable driver, Tim. 8 of us on the bus, wonderful views and room to stretch out. Lot of interesting fellow travelers and stories, since was a small group. Tim recommended trails that fit with traveler interests and skills, so we had time to stretch our legs and hike. Finally saw kea at Arthur's Pass where we had lunch. Hooray! The birds were begging at the restaurant across the street. We combined it with a overnight stay at Mt. Cook, so was one way.

Highly recommended Mount Cook (+ stop offs) day trip
Fantastic day from start to finish! Long day travelling but broken up with frequent stops. Our driver/guide Sarah was extremely personable and informative. Would 100% recommend this day trip for anyone wanting to go to Mount Cook village/Hooker Valley trail without the driving!

My boyfriend and I had a wonderful time with our tour guide, Kreig. I’ll start with the highlight of the tour - Kreig is amazing, top bloke, and one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met; absolute king of banter. Great value for money, you have a similar experience of a more expensive tour, without the price tag (or snacks that you can just get yourself anyway). The itinerary was well thought out, made good use of time, and also allowed some flexibility for things we wanted to do (or not being stuck somewhere we have no interest in). The group sized are small, which means you aren’t herded about like cattle, waiting for ages for the noisey group to get going like larger tours. The bus was clean, modern and had loads of space. The cruise they put us on had a great boat, that they intentionally only half full so that people aren’t crammed in like sardines. I had researched quite a few different tour providers before booking, and I am certain that this is the best pick.

Phenomenal! Firstly I did this tour with a larger group /coach, I wanted a more intimate experience and went with a small group /van option and the decision was the best I made ! Small comfortable van able to go where the big coaches can’t , if a spot is full of people coaches, no problem ! Able to go up further away from the crowds. They also partner up with a boat company at Milford Sound who has the same core values, whilst the boat is large comfortable, they are about minimal numbers so you can walk around the decks freely soaking in the magnificent scenery , waterfalls , wild life and history. We were lucky enough to have 2 dolphins playing in the boats wake surfing , turning on their sides to eyeball us as they were enjoying the attention! The staff were also enthusiastic and passionate , mingling with the patrons on board giving information- ontop of the usual boat commentary. The boat also nudges very close to the water falls , so bring your rain poncho if you want “ that photo “. Now our guide , Kreig ( pronounced Craig ) or feel free to call him “ Batman “, he would have to be the most passionate , comical , caring , knowledgeable tour guide I’ve ever experienced. Knowledgeable about Maori history , weaving in folk stories as we travel along. No need for selfies , Kreig is there to jump in taking photos and giving photographic advice on “ the perfect shot “ , he even went above and beyond of the way back, giving travel advise on spots to see , places to eat and whilst most guides would be happy to drop people off and run at the end of the day , Kreig took the time to drive passed restaurants, pointing them out ( on his and others recommendations ) so you knew where they were, Kreig if you are reading this, we tried one of you recommendation @Thai the best Thai ever !
So to summarise - I’ve done the homework for you, scoured the reviews and found the best ! I promise you going with a small luxury group tour is well worth it for your once in a life time experience with the amazing Milford sound and beautiful stops along the way

Very great experience in Milford Sound with Cheeky Kiwi.

Quick background: my partner and I already went to the Sound two years earlier. It was pouring rain (great for the waterfalls but we were literally showered each time we came out to take pictures). Add to that the size of the big group that we booked. We didn't leave the place with the best memories.

That is why it was important to us to experience it differently this time. Smaller group/better weather if possible.

Cheeky kiwi have been awesome !

1/ They have been really responsive and client-focused: a week before the trip, the forecast looked absolutely dreadful. We asked to postpone our day tour. They understood and accepted our shift request.

2/ The day of the tour, we have been lucky, the weather was absolutely amazing. That is how we wanted to enjoy Milford Sound. Great organisation; safe driving from (and to) Queenstown. The small size of the group was also a great advantage (we were 4 + Kreig, our guide).

3/ Special thanks to Kreig who has been absolutely fantastic, easy-going, sharing a lot a stories / knowledge about the Sound (and NZ in general). Also very respectful, when we wanted to remain calm, during the drive. He also shared good advices for pictures (at the front or the rear of the boat...), depending on our location in the sound.

In summary, thank you all for that. Wonderful experience. Will definitely recommand.

With the road closures due to the land slips the only way to get to Milford Sound is on an official bus tour. The buses travel in convoys at set times so the standard tour times and stops had changed a bit. We were staying in Te Anau so were picked up there by the friendly driver Martin. He was very helpful and informative. We picked up the rest of the passengers at the Alpine Centre with time a coffee and toilet break then headed off with our picnic lunch in a paper bag. Martin was very mindful of the time so we would be able to stop at viewpoints along the way. We were able to stop a few times including at the mirror lakes and still not sit in the queue for long. Once we got to Milford it was straight on the Milford Cruises boat with just one other tour group. The cruise was excellent. It was a small boat so we could get close to the waterfalls and cliffs. That being said it’s not the only small boat but there were a lot of bigger ones. Our lunch was good and coffee, tea and biscuits were provided too.

After the amazing cruise it was back on the bus and straight to the Alpine Centre in Te Anau. Martin has a strategy to get us there first so that we could use the toilets and grab a coffee before the Queenstown passengers headed back.

The small bus was comfy and Martin was very informative with lots of kiwi facts and figures but he also knew when to be quiet and just play music.

Milford Sound was on the top of list and it didn't disappoint! Weather is out of your control (was drizzly & misty) but the sights made it worth it. The tour guide, Kreig, was fantastic. We had him for two Cheeky Kiwi tours and he made the trip engaging, educational and memorable. There are a lot of other tours out on the water but everyone keeps their distance so each tour boat can take in the scenery. Our tour bus group was small (loved this aspect of CK) but you do get onto a boat with several tour groups so the challenges of taking photos did exist at times. Photos don't do it justice anyways so spend your time soaking in the scenery! Overall, very happy with CK and this tour.

My favourite part of the trip were the views and the road trip down to Milford Sound with our intimate group and wonderful tour guide. I loved the small group experience because it helped us to engage, learn and explore more making it a better experience. I loved the little stopovers on the way where we could take pictures and Kreig (our tour guide) was willing to take pictures of us too which was awesome and he took great pictures too. It was funny when we all had to sing our national anthem I’ve never met anybody who has asked me to sing the National anthem of India and I had to sing the New Zealand anthem as well so thank you very much Kreig for that memory, you’re hilarious. Overall it is the best experience when you want to have something intimate with your friends or your partner or your family it makes the road trip down to Milford Sound very entertaining, even though it is a long drive but with a great tour guide and a small group of people it is really fun, enjoyable and doesn’t feel boring at all. I highly recommend cheeky kiwi travel, not just for Milford Sound but for any tours/activities, they are wonderful hosts and we are so impressed. Big thanks to Kreig for being an amazing tour guide and making our experience 10 times more fun.

Leave the rental car at home & take a small group tour instead. The day was a rainy one but the experience was well worth it, affordable & a breathtaking must do for anyone wanting a fun, educational and relaxing trip to Milford sound. With some beautiful stops along the way (that you may have blinked and missed on a self-drive), the tour ensures to incorporate the beautiful sights & sounds of Aotearoa with an enjoyable and immensely educational narrative. Our guide, Lance, was excellent, friendly, passionate & down to earth - with knowledge of everything from the native birds, Maori legends, lake geography, flora, fauna, livestock, funny stories & local recommendations - you could tell he both lives & loves the area & all it has to offer. A bonus that we all felt completely safe with his driving through some quite difficult terrain to the stunning Milford. The boat cruise was wonderful too but sadly no dolphin or penguin sightings either. Unfortunately, if you want to stop off at the underwater observatory this isn't an inclusion of this particular tour.

What incredible feedback - thank you so much for your support of Cheeky Kiwi. You'll have to come back again so we can show you the dolphins :D

Had a great day to Milford Sound thanks to these guys. Very nice to experience Milford Sound in a small group, makes it a very personalized experience. Our guide told us that the boat operator they use, only sells half of the seats so that people can really enjoy the boat trip. Besides that, you make some beautiful stops on the way from Queenstown and the guide gives a lot of cool info while driving.
Thank you guys for this great trip!

After reading the consistently good reviews for Cheeky Kiwi Travel, I booked with them two tours from Queenstown for two of the NZ (and the world’s) wonders - Milford Sound & Aoraki/Mt. Cook for the end of October. Little did I know our family of three was up for a very special treat. As magnificent views of lakes, green hills and valleys dotted by sheep and playful little lambs started rolling out the van’s window, our guide Shane would tell us relevant historic, geological, and cultural bits and legends with a fresh upbeat tone on the background of peaceful, traditional Maori music (or other, based on guests’ preferences). He himself a seasoned traveler who has visited 70+ countries and stays curious, Shane was a source of abundant knowledge and good practical advice with easy going demeanor, complementing and helping us experience NZ at its best. We learned about NZ’s conservation efforts, its history and traditions, the local ecosystem and animals, as well as where the best burger in town really is. Everyone in our small group had a chance to introduce themselves and say a few words about places they liked the most adding to the travel excitement.
The weather during our Milford sound tour was sunny and we were able to walk around and admire the stunning mountain peak reflections in Mirror and Gunn lakes before he seamlessly transferred us to the Milford cruise for more breathtaking fjord and waterfalls views. Petting the friendly and fluffy alpacas was an unexpected and memorable bonus along the way. On the way back we quietly listened to the Maori legends Shane enthusiastically told. Highly recommend these trips (would give 10-stars if possible) and wish everyone an excited and encyclopedic guide like Shane!
