      A fabulous day out
It was a very early start to meet our coach for 7am, but Southern Discoveries made it easy by arranging pickups from local hotels. The coach driver (Stan) was brilliantly entertaining, while telling us what we needed to know and giving us some background to the area we were travelling through. We had 2 loo breaks and 3 brief stops to admire views, and arrived at the wharf at exactly the right time. Our trip out on the boat was fantastic. The food was good and there was some commentary, but the PA system was not clear on the observation decks, so we missed some of that. The underwater observatory was fascinating, but that part of the visit felt a bit rushed and the staff did not seem quite as invested in our enjoyment as all the others we met. It was far colder than we expected, so I recommend taking one more layer than you think you need, and you will have a fabulous day out.

Great cruise -- do the kayak trip!
This was a great trip. The cruise was beautiful. Bring warm clothes if you want to sit on the top deck (recommended). It can be cold and windy. I'd the box lunch and skip the buffet (and line). Most importantly -- do the kayak trip. It was the highlight, and having only a little time at the observatory was more than enough. We even saw penguins (which is rare, we were told)! I couldn't believe that off the 150 or so people on the cruise, only 4 went kayaking.

      Amazing
This boat trip was incredible! It was on time, the cost was good, the views were amazing and we got to see the waterfalls and seals

      You won't regret it.
This tour is 110% absolutely recommended. It is one of the top three things we did on our 2 week southern New Zealand excursion. The views driving in/out were amazing, but the serenity of the fjords in person is something that must be experienced. Hopefully you're lucky enough to catch a little rain and see a pop-up waterfall which the boat captains are nice enough to dip the nose into if their not too massive. Disclosure: This trip was March 2016, but I've been planning a trip back ever since.

      Great cruise
The cruise was very enjoyable. The scenery was stunning, the boat was comfortable and had the amenities we needed. The underwater observatory did not live up to expectations.

      10 out of 10 experience
This was an experience of a lifetime for myself and my family. The airline and boat cruise operators were professional, highly competent and extremely personable. Special shoutout to Mike our pilot who flew the plane flawlessly and described such beautiful parts we witnessed on the way to Milford Sound. I cannot recommend this enough. Don’t hesitate just sign up!

      The Ultimate Guide on Wheels!
We were really lucky to have Greg, the extraordinary bus driver and tour guide. This guy isn't your average driver, he's a storyteller, a comedian, and a master of navigation all rolled into one. He made our trek to Milford Sound an unforgettable experience. Keep him, he's an asset to your company.

      A must do visit.
I booked the trip before we left the UK so not sure what to expect, but everything was spot on. The trip from Te Anau was longer than planned (Around 2hrs 10 min) parking for the cruise about 10 mins walk and about $40. The experience check in was smooth and boarding the ship easy. As we had booked the kayak and observatory trip we were lucky the weather was lovely and sunny, but the most stunning part were the views of the sound itself absolutely beautiful. Definitely worth the trip.

Fantastic trip for family with small kids
We were very satisfied with our day trip to Milford Sound. Southern Discoveries picked us up from our apartment in the morning to our coach. The coach was comfortable, airconditioned, with glass roof ceilings just like in the photos. The bus driver/tour guide was very skillful, informative and had some funny stories to keep us awake. The cruise was great too, spacious and not too crowded. The views of course were amazing. But the highlight of our tour was the flyback home with Milford Air. We had a lovely pilot. It was safe and definitely worth it. Not just because its only 40 minutes back to Queenstown but we had the most amazing views from above. We were a family of 7 with kids youngest 5 yo and the eldest 15 yo, so this combination was great for us. And they even shuttled us back to our apartment afterwards.

      Beautiful Views with Boxed Lunch
No one can dispute the views while on the tour are amazing, whether in rain or sunshine. However one would have expected much more detailed information on the geology of the area or history. It was basically a boat ride not a tour by any means.

Fiordland National Park was amazing. Best part of the trip! Our driver, Shale, was exceptional! If we could have afforded it we would have flown back and saved the return trip.

Exceptional IF YOU DRESS WARM for the moving boat wind chill. Merely Good if you have to stay in enclosed areas.
Warning, wear extra warm clothes!!! This is far more enjoyable if you can be out on an observation deck. The boat moving at 20 knots generates a lot of wind chill factor, so even in summer (Feb 2024 for us) you need a winter coat and gloves. We had to go in and out of the enclosed areas and didn't get quite the experience we had 6 years ago on a warmer day (both in late summer (Feb). Good cruise of Milford Sound and enjoyed the extra of the underwater observatory. A recommended extra. We chose this as a friend went diving and we had extra time to burn.

Great trip by Southern Discoveries and Air Milford in Queenstown
This was our last big excursion of our trip to New Zealand from US. Our driver over on the coach, Shayle, was excellent. Very knowledgeable and it was easy to understand his instructions and details. He took good care of us. The fly back was just breathtakingly beautiful-I highly recommend going back this way. The eight seater plane was operated by Emma at Air Milford. She explained what we were seeing and the aerial view-I was awestruck by the beauty.

      Fantastic day out
Absolutely fantastic day out. Jamie our driver/guide was great, really friendly and knowledgeable. We had plenty of stops on the drive to Milford Sound to take photos. The boat trip & observatory were well worth doing, the scenery is spectacular. The picnic lunch was also very good!

Booked on the "Encounter Nature" cruise from Te Anau.(small boat, limited passenger numbers, no tour groups & a nature expert for commentary). Collected from our accommodation at the specified time but then everything went downhill. Just after we left Te Anau the coach driver informed the group (only 18 persons) that the boat we were supposed to be using was not available and that we had been transferred to another, earlier, vessel. We therefore did not stop at the designated "photo spots" on the way up and when we arrived at Milford sound we were on the larger "normal" cruise vessel with coach loads of tour groups & NO nature expert. As it was, the cruise down Milford Sound was spectacularly uninspiring and lacked any nature content at all except for a family of fur seals
I approached Southern Discoveries regarding this change to our tour and was told " All the cruises are the same so there is no reason to complain" With customer service at this low level I would not recommend anyone booking with this company. There are better tour suppliers in this market place!!

We thoroughly enjoyed this trip, both the bus trip into Milford, with a very informative driver and great stops along the way. Scenery was amazing. We did have a bit of an overcast day so the cruise was not the best visibility, but still a great trip and worth doing. The packages lunch you get on the cruise was great value for money at $20, included a sandwich, 2 pieces of fruit, biscuits, chocolate and crisps an unlimited tea and coffee.

The whole trip was amazing from start to finish and efficiently organised by Real NZ. The Te Anau ticket office staff were welcoming and helpful. Brandon, our coach driver gave an excellent commentary whilst driving amazingly well on difficult roads so we were able to admire the beautiful and spectacular scenery. Several well placed stops to admire points of local interest and birds. The cruise itself was fantastic with breathtaking views and once again, very interesting commentary. Our picnic lunch was excellent.
We thoroughly recommend both the trip itself and Real NZ.

Awesome day with Southern discoveries. Thanks to our informative and friendly bus driver Richard, our awesome boat captain who got us close to the waterfalls and took time to explain things. The underwater aquarium also exceeded expectations and the Swedish guide (sorry forgot her name) was really knowledgeable. Overall a great way to see the sounds!

What an amazing day! I hadn't been looking forward to spending so long on the coach, but the scenery was incredible, the driver provided friendly and informative details and we stopped often on the way at some amazing sights. We tasted mountain spring water and saw a Kea, The Homer tunnel and view from both sides is amazing.
The cruise was amazing with dolphins, waterfalls and, of course, the wonderful scenery. We didn't hold out much hope for the vegan packed lunch but were pleasantly surprised.

Having been to Milford before, I persuaded our group of 8 to coach it ,enabling a better viewing experience, but really wasn't expecting Gregory. By the time we arrived in Milford, I felt we had already got our money's worth. Greg's knowledge and sense of humor had us realizing
we were experiencing something more than a tour.
FANTASTIC. Would do it again just for the laughs
    All the best Greg

We had a lovely day at Milford Sound. Our driver was friendly and a good driver and the coach was clean and comfortable. The boat cruise was beautiful. The picnic lunch was OK - we had vegetarian and the sandwiches were actually quite nice and fresh and not soggy - but to make it vegan for one of our party, they just opened a vegetarian lunch and took out the cheese crackers (no replacement) which was a bit lame. There was a lovely buffet lunch on board which would have been better but was probably twice the cost. I was disappointed in the dearth of natural/cultural history in the coach tour. Our driver spoke all about his interests and the road building but barely mentioned the geology, biology, ecology, cultural aspects etc of this beautiful place. He was also clearly not well with a cold/cough and probably shouldn’t have been at work that day for his sake and ours. However..this is just feedback to improve things if the company reads this. We did have a great day and the service was fine.

The bus trip from Te Anau was great, a nice easy ride and good stops on the way. The driver was awesome and knowledgeable. The cruise on the ‘Pride of Milford’ boat was so stunning. The food was great and the views of Milford Sounds are amazing. Photos do not do it justice! We got to see penguins and seals. Southern Discoveries made our trip so great, and were so accommodating especially when we had to initially reschedule due to being unwell. This was our honeymoon and we really enjoyed ourselves, a memorable trip for sure.
