      Really good value for money.
While no tour to see wildlife can guarantee the presence of wildlife, this tour exceeded expectations. By taking a small number to private land, we were very nearly guaranteed seals and seal lions and we get both. We had a close encounter with sea lions. Best of all were four penguins coming in from the sea - surfing the waves then waddling up the shore. We were provided with good quality powerful binoculars and our very friendly and informative guide Craig took care to point out anything of interest in the drive to the cove. Craig was knowledgeable and had a very interesting way of explaining what we were seeing and why it was of interest. While not cheap this was Really good value for money.

      Fabulous Dunedin wildlife tour
Fabulous tour, Rachel was very knowledgeable on both the history of the local area and the wildlife. So amazing to be able to get so close to the baby fur seals! Our guests from England had a wonderful time and we would all highly recommend this tour to others.

A great tour for all to enjoy
Really great informative tour. We saw plenty of wildlife and it was great having a smaller private group so all were able to enjoy and see everything. Bonus that they had jackets to fit all when it was windy and museli bars to hand out half way through for a snack.

Great wildlife tour - lots to see
Just before Christmas 2023 my wife, son (21) and I were lucky enough to get on this tour it was a 9:30 pickup and we all had a great time. The tour managed to keep our son engaged the entire trip which was impressive in itself. As for the tour it was really, really good. We managed to see an old limestone kiln, some sea lions, seals and lots of birds. The guides we had were knowledgeable and could answer most questions without issue. Due to this being a wildlife tour you have to understand that you may not see everything as it is up to the wild animals what happens and as it was late December and early morning tour the yellow eyed penguins decided they would protect their young rather than walk around and show off to us. But even with that we saw so much and learnt lots. Saw where they were nesting. Now we have an excuse to come back and do the afternoon or evening tour to see the yellow eyes. If you’re coming to Dunedin this is a tour to add to must do list.

      Wonderful wildlife tour
What a fabulous wildlife tour! The scenery is stunning. We had a great time and were lucky enough to see penguins, sea lions and lots of seals. With the binoculars provided it felt as if we were seeing them really close up and being able to see baby penguins in their nests via the cameras was really special too. We made good use of the big jackets provided by the company as the weather was a little cold. Our children aged 8 and 11 were engaged the whole time; it was a magical experience for us all. We would definitely recommend this tour.

      Amazing - Wild One Tour
This tour was an amazing experience that showcases a lot of the wildlife Otago Peninsula has to offer. The guides were super knowledgeable of local history and on all wildlife species viewed. The tour van was comfortable and warm and the walking tracks to the hides to view the NZ Fur Seals and Yellow Eyed Penguins were easily managed (our family ranged from 10yrs to 80yrs). Binoculars and weatherproof jackets were also provided. There are many photo opportunities throughout the tour. This is a must do tour if visiting Dunedin or if your a local looking for an adventure. Highly recommend. Lisa & Nick

A very informative and interesting wildlife tour with a guaranteed sighting of wildlife
The van for taking us to the wildlife very comfortable. Commentary excellent. The walking distances to observation areas very manageable. I got cold as was under dressed which was my mistake. Also with a trip of about 4 hours some refreshments of tea or coffee and something light to eat would be good. Advise re what to wear and refreshments provided would be good or advice re what to bring re food would be good. We were on a trial trip so I'm sure that would be provided otherwise. The seals observed and sealion having something to eat were great.

      Fantastic, would 100% recommend!
This tour was great from start to finish, the guides had so much knowledge of the area & wildlife. The tour vans were comfy & great to travel in. There were so many highlights it’s hard to pick the best one but we were lucky enough to see penguins, seals & sea lions, albatross & other bird life. The trip to & through the farm was awesome & the scenery was beautiful. We had a big range of ages in our group & we could all walk on the tracks easily. Everyone in our group said it was an amazing experience & would highly recommend it. Thanks Clearwater Wildlife Tours!

      Incredible boutique wildlife tour
Our trip was incredible. Our tour guide Rachel (a 6th generation local!!!) was really knowledgeable without making you feel like you were in a wildlife lecture and the wildlife we saw was amazing. The highlight was seeing the yellow eyed penguins up close but watching the tiny fur seal pups getting to grips with their surrounds and the older ones playing in the rock pools came a close second for me. The fact there are no more than 10 guests in the group and that it’s a private beach make this trip really special. Great value for money and highly recommended.

A must see when in Dunedin!
Cannot recommend Clearwater Wildlife tours highly enough! We booked the 3pm, 4hr sightseeing tour and it was remarkable. The farm the tour is based on is family owned and has been for generations which makes it even more special but the fact that the tour is taken in small groups on their private property means you get to see incredible wildlife up close and beautiful landscapes that aren't available to the public. The scenic drive along the peninsula to the farm had ocean views on both sides and Rachel our guide was very informative and able to answer our questions while also making stops along the way to point out different forms of wildlife and educate us about them. Overall it was very family friendly, the van is comfortable and can fit car seats (we bought our own along) with a pair of binoculars for each guest and jackets for the windy weather when you are on the cliffs. The walks are easy for children and there is so much to see and explore. Bonus points that there were private toilet stops if needed along the way! The up close proximity to the Sea Lions, Yellow Eyed Penguin's and the Seal's with their new pups while still maintaining a safe distance was incredible and well thought out so as to not disturb them but giving us the perfect viewing opportunity that feels so special to witness and be a part of. There were numerous viewing platforms and huts along the trails when looking out for the wildlife which were fantastic when spotting the penguins come up from the water and start their climb up the hill to feed their chicks. The penguins weren't shy and came up a few metres from the hut on the beach. Cameras in the higher hut showed the nesting spots where the chicks were and were able to pan round to find others if they were nearby too. We learned so much and have some amazing photos and videos to show for it too! A must see for locals and tourists!

We had a wonderful experience during this tour. Our tour guide Eric was a lot of fun and could answer all the questions we had. We saw seals, with pupps, penguins and sea lions, all pretty up close. We even spotted a dolphin in the distance. As a new tour operator they really surprised us, we would would highly recommend them to anyone visiting the Dunedine region.

This trip was wonderful in every way. Craig was an informative and personable guide, and a great driver in challenging, extremely windy conditions (even for Otago!) We saw baby fur seals, juvenile sea lions, wading birds, and the grand finale, yellow-eyed penguins. The Clearwater family owns the tour company and the land where the penguin and seal beaches are, so we could access areas that the public couldn’t.

We were lucky to see so many of these beautiful, rare penguins, but the gorgeous, remote scenery and other wildlife would have been worth it even without penguins.

Do this tour if you’re interested in wild country and wildlife!

(Note: the operators underplay the physical difficulty of the walking part. Lots of steep stairs so if going up five or six flights of stairs at one go is hard for you, think twice. I have some chronic fatigue issues, and I was able to make it but am very stiff and tired the next day)

Hi Jayne, Thank you for your lovely review. We are so glad you had a great experience on our tour despite the windy conditions. We are sorry you felt mislead by the physical difficulty of our tour but we do state the following on TripAdvisor and our website - Travelers should have a moderate physical fitness level. There are also several sets of steps and stairs therefore the terrain visited is not suitable for persons with walking disabilities and wheelchairs. Craig was an outstanding guide who provided excellent background of the area and the wildlife - especially the yellow-eyed penguins. He had a broad grasp of local and NZ history which added another dimension to the tour. And Craig has a delightful personality; he did his utmost to see that each person on the tour achieved their dream of seeing penguins, seals and sea lions. It was obvious that Craig thoroughly enjoyed his role as a guide and made certain we were all comfortable. His driving was excellent; he gave us a terrific dinner suggestion and he was just terrific! Take this tour!
One suggestion for the tour operator: When Daylight Savings occurs, adjust the start time of your trip to match the arrival time of the penguins at the beach!

We are thrilled to hear you enjoyed the tour with Craig. We are very lucky to have him on our team!! Many thanks for taking the time to place a review and your recommendation of our start times. Unfortunately the wildlife and penguins are unpredictable but we do plan our evening tours to return at sunset, this is the best viewing time for seeing Yellow Eyed penguins. This was our third trip to New Zealand and third wildlife tour on the Otago Peninsula. Finally we saw yellow eyed penguins. Best yet!

Clearwater offers a unique experience with small vans and small groups. Our tour had six people. Eric, our guide, was very knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions from our group.

This was a unique experience, not a “tour”. Eric briefed us on the geology and history of the area while we drove from central Dunedin out to the peninsula. Informative and interesting.

On the peninsula we walked down to an observation spot where we could watch lots of fur seals up close (~10 meters away). Then went to a beach where Eric lead us past huge sea lions (keeping safe distance), Really special.

We spotted a pair of penguins going up the beach to the grass. Clearwater has a blind (shelter) where we could watch them hike up the trail. Eric answered questions about threats the penguins face and what is being done to mitigate the threats.

Best summary we have is from our friend who normally doesn’t like wildlife tours. He loved the experience.

One of our favorite tours of our Australia and New Zealand trip. Eric (transplant from California) was extremely knowledgeable of the wildlife and a humorous guide, keeping us entertained and informed throughout the tour. As well he was a competent driver as we had some unexpected rustic-off road travel because a juvenile sea lion was blocking our path to the beach. The highlight of the trip was a view from a blind of the extremely rare and endangered yellow eyed penguin. The coastal scenery was gorgeous. In addition a shout out to Rachel (owner) for her patience and assistance in saving us a spot while clearing up a compromised credit card issue.

Our tour guide Craig took us to the Clearwater Sheep Farm where we saw seals, sea lions and finally pinguins, which is already one of the highlights of our road trip. On the way to the farm and back to the city centre, Craig stopped at beautiful viewpoints and showed us waterbirds along the two inlets. This was by no means a hurried tour for visitors.

The viewing spaces were excellent for our tour earlier this week. Eric was an exceptional guide and for the most part the wildlife cooperated. Three yellow-eyes emerged from the sea. One gave us a nice show. The fur seal pups played and let’s say the sea lions, “made themselves known”.

I’ll sing your praises to any other “Yanks” I know that might be coming your direction.

The Clearwater Wildlife Tour was an amazing experience! As a Peninsula local, I have seen a lot of Dunedin's wildlife before, however the tour allowed me to see the wildlife up close whilst still respecting the animals space, in a new area I had never been before. Craig was very informative, giving us information about both the wildlife and the history. His appreciation and respect for the wildlife was very clear. He made sure to instruct us on the best way to navigate around the animals in order to not disturb them whilst still getting close enough to see them well. I thought the four hours was going to be a long time but I had so much fun, it barely felt like 2hrs! I would definitely recommend this to anyone who likes being out in nature, who wants to learn more about New Zealand, or anyone who wants to explore Dunedin and see some incredible animals. My favourite part was being able to see the Yellow Eyed Penguins come in from fishing to feed their young, such an amazing opportunity. And if you're someone who loves views, this is the tour for you!

When you see seals up close with their pups. Walk within 20 feet of 6 sea lions, you may think you have see enough. Nope, the highlights were 2 penguins popping up out of the water and heading to their nest

I'd give more stars if I could!
Our guide Craig was excellent, very knowledgeable and friendly but professional. He made sure we didn't get too close to the penguins and sea lions as to not to disturb them. Binoculars provided were very good. Dressing warm is a must! I recommend to bring gloves along before the tour as your hands will freeze cause you can't stop looking at the animals through the binoculars!
We were lucky to see all of the animals - cute seals, a bit scary but also still cute sea lions and the adorable penguins!
Excellent ratio of humans (in the group) to penguins (sighted). Plus, we got to see gorgeous multiple rainbows!
Excellent tour and a truly memorable experience!
