        Excellent wildlife cruise
Fantastic, friendly and informative cruise. We were lucky to see Albatross nesting on the cliff. We also were able to cruise alongside several albatross sitting nearby at sea. Absolutely beautiful conditions to view such amazing birds. So pleased we did the Monarch Wildlife Cruise. Well worth it. Thank you.

Could not recommend this trip enough!
This was one of our best trips in NZ. Could not recommend it enough!! It was incredible for wildlife - we saw sea lions, lots of seabirds, penguins (wild and at rehab centre) and albatross (including chicks). It was a fantastic afternoon and an experience I will never forget. Our tour guide Felix was very knowledgeable.

Wild and exciting no matter what the weather
It was a cool wet day but the trip was amazing... the gear provided to keep you warm and dry was excellent... the binoculars and crew support to ensure you saw as much as possible was exceptional! Our UK family were as excited as we were to experience the feeding frenzy of so many seabirds, and the stunning up-close views of so many variety of albatross. We would thoroughly recommend the one-hour wildlife cruise as being excellent value for money, and never again be discouraged by a southerly squall prediction - the weather added to the whole experience!!

        great day trip!
What a wonderful day! We took the peninsula tour with a stop at the Albatross Centre and the penguin reserve. Our guide Mark was great! We left from Dunedin and drove to several spots on the peninsula where we walked to a beach to see seal lions, we drove around a lake to see water birds, and we got great views. Everyone else on our small group tour had signed up for the guided tour at the Albatross Centre (which they seemed to enjoy), but my husband and opted to just walk around the visitor center. There were some interesting displays, we wandered through the gift shop and picked up a drink at the cafe and then watched several albatross flying around from a seat outside. There were also two short walks you can do outside the centre with great views. We then went to the penguin reserve and after an orientation we walked through the tunnels to several hides to try to see the yellow-eyed penguins. We had been warned that they hadn't been spotted in weeks, so our expectations were low (they're in the wild so you just have to know you may not see any). It was our lucky day, however, and we saw two penguins waddling through the grass! While we could have driven ourselves out and around the peninsula, I was very happy to have a relaxing day and a break from driving, and to be able to actually look around vs. being so focused on a curvy road was very nice. Mark was a great guide, and we would highly recommend Monarch Wildlife Tours! (we actually booked through Elm Wildlife, they the two companies have merged).

A Unique Perspective of Otago Peninsula
Amazing experience, knowledgeable and friendly staff. Got to see many toroa/albatross species, and the Pukekura Northern Royal Albatross breeding colony from the sea. Also saw lots of other sea birds like petrels and shags. Also got to see a huge pod of dusky dolphins come around the boat which was incredible.

        Thanks so much!
What an amazing experience! Saw albatrosses, petrels, fur seals, dusky dolphins and loads of gulls! The only bad part of the tour is that it had to end! Thank you so much to the amazing Monarch team for the awesome tour as well as the guide for all the interesting information and wildlife spotting. I'm counting down the days until I can go again.

        ONE WORD - BRILLIANT
Fantastic tour! Loved the Larnach Castle inside with our guide who was so knowledgeable and made the castle history and experience come to life. The Otago Peninsular Cruise was amazing, seeing the albatross chicks, a blue penguin, a bird feeding frenzy and the highlight were a pod of dolphins jumping and playing around the boat. Such a brilliant day. There was quite a bit of driving, up to the castle which afforded great views, down to the dock traveling a different route, and after the cruise back to the harbour, along the magical shoreline. All in all a fantastic day for our small taste of what Dunedin has to offer.

Very good tour with knowledgeable guide
The tour guide was very good, spending time to go slowly and point out the wildlife on our journey. Lots of opportunities for photos. Guide was very aware of safety - especially when seals were asleep on footpaths. When we visited the Yellow eyed penguins everything was explained to us and we were give ample opportunity to see the penguins in the rehab centre and also where they nested on the beach walkways. We did not see any penguins coming ashore but this was probably because we were too early. When we viewed blue eye penguins a while ago we needed to be at the centre when it was dark, so we could watch them coming ashore to their young.

        Wonderful way to see wildlife
We loved going on this short cruise! You get binoculars onboard, which is great for getting a close look at the wildlife. It was fun to be out on the water, and we saw seals, albatross, and shags. The captain was great—informative and very fun. Definitely recommend if you're out on the Otago Peninsula.

Nigel was our captain and was amazing. He knew his job pilotting, but was also an amazing bird specialist. We saw many species of Shags(Cormorants), blue and yellow-eyed penguins, terns, fur seals, petrels and the treat of the day the Royal Albatross both flying, walking and on the nest. For a 2 hour tour this trip was so packed with viewings and I would do it again in a moment. The tour guides also had binoculars for those not having them, rain coats in case of weather and nice coffee and tea with cookies. I would book directly if ever I came back thru Trip Advisor rather than doing the Cruise line tour because they jack the price up, but still worth every cent!!!

From the moment we were collected from the hotel in the Monarch bus we were given a great commentary by the driver of Dunedin. On arrival at the boat we were treated so very well. The talk by the skipper was first class and Olivia was very helpful
A definite trip to go on
      Highly recommend.

We were picked up from our hotel in a mini bus. Our tour began with our driver's commentary as we drove along the peninsula to the boat. The views were breathtaking and the commentary very interesting. Our boat wasn't crowded. We were offered large warm waterproof coats and binoculars. Once again we had ab excellent commentary, additional staff were on the lookout for wildlife and to check all passengers were comfortable. We were fortunate to see a good variety of wildlife - little blue penguins, Hector's dolphins, albatross, fur seals, giant petrels, otago cormorants, spotted shags and so much more!

Amazing adventure with Monarch Cruises, very professional and helpful right through from initial enquiry to the end of day bus drop off. We were hesitant about weather but Chris suggested to wait til latest possible to check the weather and suggest best day for us to tour. It was fabulous and the wildlife was extraordinary. Aaron did a brilliant commentary, he and Pete are clearly passionate and knowledgeable about the Albatross and other species. I saw a couple of little blue penguins ducking and diving, that was a treat, very happy

My friends and I had a lovely time aboard the Monarch.
We were treated to a calm spring afternoon on the harbour with a great running commentary from Nigel the skipper and fabulous crew Trudy and Aaron who were there to answer our queries and point out wildlife and landmarks on our way. They went out of their way to to ensure we were comfortable, providing us with warm jackets and binoculars and complimentary tea and coffee.
We saw various sea birds and seals and had a very special sighting of the royal albatross chicks in their nests at Taiaroa Head albatross colony testing their wings in the breeze and getting ready to take their much anticipated first flights.
Bring warm clothes and a hat as well as sunscreen.

Unfortunately and due to extreme weather conditions, our cruise was unable to dock in Dunedin port, so we had to miss this tour. However, I would highly commend teh customer care offered by Monarch Wildlife Cruises and Tours. They responded promptly to our messages and agreed to refund our tour. We will definitely book this tour again with Monarch Wildlife Cruises and Tours next time we are in Dunedin.

Rob our guide for the first part of the trip and was great and picked me up from my hotel. We drove through the countryside to Wellers Rock to get our boat. There were sea lions, fur seals, albatrosses, penguins and lots of other birds to be seen. The sea was a bit choppy but I am ok with that but bear that in mind if you get seasick as the boat pitches and rolls quite a lot. Do it but take a seasickness tablet! The wildlife tour was followed by a leisurely (and calmer) cruise along the harbour. A great way to spend an afternoon and great to see wildlife in it’s natural habitat.

Some great advice there Kate, we also recommend motion sickness medication for people concerned about some ocean rock and roll. It sounds like the wildlife was out in force, despite the conditions. Thank you for coming out with us.

Our tour began when our driver, Rob, picked us up at the wharf. Rob was a very kind, very informative guide. We enjoyed his narrated tour during the hour long trip to the boat. The boat crew was very helpful supplying binoculars and jackets, which were very much needed! The skipper was helpful in pointing out and identifying wildlife-we saw penguins, many different birds-including 3 types of Albatrosses, and fur seals. He was also informative with what we were seeing on land and some history. We had our choice of coffee, tea or hot chocolate and mice pies or sausage rolls. Once back on land, Rob picked us up and he went above and beyond to help us- thank you so much, Rob!

Prompt shuttle pick up at our hotel, wonderful cruise up the harbour and out into the open ocean with very informative commentary and a hot cuppa. We were lucky to have good weather and it was a very smooth trip with the staff being helpful and accommodating.

The vessel was well equipped with waterproof jackets for anyone that needed them, binoculars provided (even small ones for the kids), cover available if desired but we all chose to sit on the front deck as it was such glorious weather.

We saw loads of sea birds and nesting sites which were well explained.

      Thoughly enjoyable outing.

The combination of the land trip to Tairoa on the south side of the peninsula, the Tairoa tour, the hoiho visit, the Tairoa head crise and back down the harbour was the best ever trip. The guides were knowledgable and made the trip all fit together especially well. Thoroughly recomend it.
