About the operator
- Z9160QUjudys00New beers to tryIt was Sunday in Dunedin and not much going on, so the brewery tour was a nice option. It was nice that the group was fairly small (about 16) and they managed it well. The young lady giving the tour was quite knowledgeable and interesting. We had plenty of time to sample the variety of beers. Nice way to spend a couple of hours.
- Safari5261984555900Very enjoyableI have been drinking Speights for the past five years, and so I've always wanted to go see the brewery. Let's just say that it did not disappoint. I would recommend coming here if you ever want to learn the history of the man James Speights and the brewery.
- Thomas S00Great way to spend 90 minutesInformative tour guide, interesting history of the brewery and its founders, and the chance to see brewing technology up close.
- Michelle C00Good On Ya Mate :)Very accomodating and knowledgeable staff. We had an excellent time and learnt quite a bit. Would highly recommend 10+ We were in a group of four so the experience was even better as we had plenty of time for questions and answers. It’s a “must do” if you’re in Dunedin. Plenty of merchandise to purchase and the tasting at the end of your tour just tops off your visit perfectly. You definitely get your money’s worth. Mr and Mrs Cranstoun, Invercargill
- Brownkiwi9900Covid restrictedWe walked by and dropped in, cool series of buildings and a good shop and nearby bar. My son had previously gone on a tour and said drinks at the end for 30 minutes was great, but now it looks like covid has closed the tour experience for a while.
- simonee30200Average experience for priceVery short tour, looking at historical equipment no longer in use. Best bit is the variety of beer you get to try at the end. Would not recommend to anyone, the price should be reduced and is not worth $30 pp
- JPY00Great tour, with plentiful tastingsThis was one of the best tours we'd been on, with our host Paul excellent and really made a difference. You get to find out about the history of Speight's and get a good look behind the old locations of the brewery. There are also plentiful tastings at the end which are tailored to your own preferences. No open shoes are allowed on the tour so make sure you don't wear your flip-flops/jandals and they also provide lockers for your bags as they're not allowed on the tour either. Highly recommend.
- rbthodge00TYPICAL BREWERY TOUR, BUT DINNER WAS NICE ADDITIONIf you've seen one brewery, you've seen them all. Beer is made the same way everywhere. Tour does have some interesting historical displays, but you don't get to see any of the magic workings of the brewery and no bottling, as it's only barrels/kegs here and you don't get to see that. Tasting afterwards was nice - they have quite a variety of brews you can sample. Dinner was very good - entre, main and another brew from the brewery.
- gregcolledge00Outstanding Tour.Outstanding tour and sampling of the beer. Would highly recommend this tour as it is very informative and nothing is too much trouble for the extremely knowledgeable staff. Well done Speights ( you know who you are !!!).
- SharonD-0400Must do in DunedinInformative experience with great history of one of our NZ iconic beers. Generous tastings at the end of the tour!
- amberkyp202200Speights Brewery TourOne of my most favourite brewery tours. Very interesting history and lots to look at. With a knowledgeable and engaging tour guide and a very generous beer tasting.
- Learnhardway00Speight's Brewery, The good visit to make in Dunedin.Dunedin is much spoiled over recent years, and when you have seen things so much better, this is disappointing. However, Speights Brewery has escaped the ravages of those who think they know best. The most damage they have thus far inflicted on the Brewery is to erect an alcohol ban immediately outside it. It's almost humorous. You taste and drink inside and they can't stop that. The Brewery tour is a fascinating story through history and Speight's is still a successful company. You are taken through the history and the process. Then you are allowed to try all the tinctures that are produced there. It was a lovely conclusion to a day of visiting 8 other sites that were either shut or ruined. It's always nice to finish a bad day on a nice note.
- Mknjrdad00History and beerWell I love beer with a generous tasting experience paired with an informative historical tour what's not to like right
- markjP8942GL00Brilliant.Mitch was a fantastic guide, the detail and humour were fantastic. Plus the beers and amount of tasters provided was the best I’ve had from a brewery tour. Brilliant.
- shirleyn82200Family experienceAll round, very informative tour. Enjoyed tasting the different beers at the end. My daughter and son in law from Ireland enjoyed it too.

This tour is basically a series of stops within the Speights building, listening to a guide giving a series of spiels, using museum-like props, about the history of Speights. The stories were interesting although much of what was said could not be heard as our guide's voice, although his volume was fine, was drowned out by machinery - perhaps a mic would have helped? The beer-tasting at the end was enjoyable and relaxed. I was hoping for more insight into the current brewing operation, maybe a walk through/around the rooms still brewing beer, in a way not to disturb operation.

Dear H M
Thanks for taking the time to post your review on TripAdvisor - we appreciate that you took the time to share your experience. We are sorry to read that you did not fully enjoy your visit to the Speight's Brewery.
All of our experienced guides strive to deliver and engaging and informative tour that caters to the interests of our guests. As we are the oldest continually operating Brewery in New Zealand we do tend to focus on the iconic heritage of the site and our diverse history.
As an operational site there are instances where noise can be a factor, this is to be expected in any factory tour and we do endeavor to preempt this in our briefing video.
The final stop (before the tasting room) is usually to our state of the art "New Brew Floor" where we discuss the current brewing process and how this differs to manual methods of batch brewing beer. Our guides are always very open to questions from our guests, so I am sorry that you did not conclude the tour with all the information you would have liked.
If you could contact me directly via email (Rosie.Shanks@lionco.com) I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss your concerns.
Once again thank you for identifying some potential opportunities for the improvement of our iconic experience. I look forward to hearing from you in person. We would welcome the opportunity to welcome you back to the Speight's Brewery and provide you with a southern experience true to our values and vision.
Kind regards,
Rosie Shanks

The tour is informative and fun. We got an overall knowledge of brewing beer and the process involved. The tasting was well received.
Our tour guide John was funny and his dry humour was well received by my over 60 hubby and me.
It was good to learn the history behind the company and how it has travelled well into the 21st century.
We really enjoyed all the beers we tried at the end of the tour.
The only negative I can give is because of the price of the souvenirs from the gift shop. Even as Aussies we thought they were expensive ...
Otherwise a 5 stars...
We hope to visit Speights another time.

We were on a tour, and I had mixed feelings about this because I’m not a huge beer drinker, but I do occasionally enjoy a nice cold one. I’m so happy this stop was on the tour. This is some really good beer!!!
Our interactive tour started with the history of the brewery and the making of their beer, and then ended with a tasting of the brews in their brand new tasting room. The tour itself, and the history was pretty interesting. However, the guide was a little hard to hear since we joined quite a large group.
The tastings were quite a pleasant surprise. After the tour, we entered a little room off the gift shop in front where we were given three good sized, empty beer glasses. We were to pour the beer ourselves from whatever taps we wanted to sample. But, our guide actually let us sample more than three. The beers I sampled were the Gold Medal Ale, Mid Ale, Malt Old Dark, Triple Hop Pilsner, and the Distinction. They were all pretty tasty, but the favorite among the group were definitely the Malt Old Dark and the Gold Medal Ales.
On the property are natural springs, and outside on the wall of the building there is another type of tap. This tap is where locals can come get free water from the springs! I love that Speights gives back to their community!

This brewery has a long history in NZ and you'll learn all about it, as well and the typical beer brewing lesson. What makes this tour special is the giant copper stills still in use today. Our tour guide was great and provided some humor in his one hour tour. Best part was the tasting room with numerous ice cold beers on tap. A great experience.

I did this tour about 37 years ago and really enjoyed it then so suggested to my husband that he might like to do this.
Ali was our tour guide and she was really good, very informative and interesting to listen too.
we had beer tasting at the end which was fun, but the water was equally delicious. :)
On the outside wall in the street was a tap where people could fill up their water bottles with this lovely cool pure water.

If you are looking for a tour that is informative, good priced and is interactive then this is the tour to go on. Been living in Dunedin most of my life and I have never been on this tour but had an opportunity to do this with family coming over from Australia. The tour guide made this tour great with her personal touch to the guide and didn’t feel robotic. The history in this tour was amazing to hear and definitely didn’t realise how hard it is to brew beer. But if you like a good beer at the end of the tour there is a tasting section and that was really awesome and if you have time pop down the road to the restaurant to finish off with a meal.

A must do when you are in Dunedin. The tour was hosted by Ron Esplin a local artist. The tour was fun and we learnt a lot about Speights Brewery. At the end of the tour we had some beer tasting wich personally was my favourite part. :)

Very friendly staff. Ken our tour guide, was pretty amazing. Very friendly, had a great knowledge about local history and about brewery. Great value for money. We missed beer tasting for personal reasons, but they also have great non alcoholic beverages. Definitely going to this place again and can't wait to taste some beers. The retail store has got good variety of Speights souvenirs to buy for good price. Overall it's a good experience and a must do activity in Dunedin... Cheers mate..

From the time Ken our guide started the tour you could see he knew what he was talking about. He was entertaining and answered everyone’s questions. Would recommend the tour and the bonus of free beer tasting at the end a highlight.
