        Happy customer
My tour in Dunedin today to Larnach Castle was great. Our tour guide Jason was very knowledgeable and went out of his way to show us the best things around Dunedin.

        Great Tour Experience
We had an excellent tour. There were just the two of us. We had an informative tour of the city . The guide was knowledgeable and catered for our needs while showing us the sights. We had a tour of Larnarch Castle. Again our guide was knowledgeable. The stories he told enhanced our experience. These were things we would not have known wandering around by ourselves. Without this tour we would not have found out or seen as much of Dunedin as we did. I would highly recommend that you use this tour company when in Dunedin and make the most of your time in the city especially if like us it you have limited time. We made several unscheduled stops. From recommendations from our guide we knew what we wanted to see the next day and how to get there. Great day Thank you

        Guided tours free daily
We chanced upon a guide with no customers when offered a tour we accepted. We both reflected that we learnt so much more, and would possibly have missed the sculpture garden, without a guide.

Waitaki Valley Tour and Wine Tasting
I contacted Ralph at Headfirst to put together a bus trip day out in North Otago for a group of friends. Ralph couldn’t have been more helpful and gave us plenty of good value options. We decided on our trip and on the day Alan was a great, friendly informative driver. The scenery was great and the two wineries we visited River T and Ostler had interesting stories to tell and delicious wines to taste. An excellent day out and I would highly recommend Ralph and his team.

Awesome trip to Larnach Castle with Headfirst Travel
My partner and I attended the 2pm trip to Larnach Castle. The trip ended up being just us two which we didn’t mind at all. We had a lovely driver, who was very knowledgeable about Dunedin and it’s surrounding areas. We made a few stops - not planned on the trip which included a lookout point on the way to the castle, Baldwin St and St. Clairs Beach on the way back which we were very pleaseD with as it ticked off our list. Our tour at the castle was awesome, well paced and our guide/driver was awesome. We really enjoyed this tour and Larnach Castle is amazing!

Long term planning a trip. Forget it
Because of limited accommodation in areas I like to plan and secure bookings well before I go anywhere. As I was wanting to go to Stewart Island and the Catlins in January I naturally contacted Headfirst Travel Dunedin, as they showed a good tour for the Catlins on Google, mid July. I was told the summer itinerary had not been organised contact us in early Nov. This I did and was told not done yet so regularly I contacted them and got the same story. By early Dec still no answer and I was panicking until someone told me about a Invercargill company, "Catch-a-bus-South", who immediately set to and sorted out my trip which was then very successful,

Shocking service. Bus 25 min late and slammed doors on us when seats were free. 2nd bus also 20 min late and only half of us fitted in. So another 40min wait!!!

Very impressive Castle with interesting story behind
We were very lucky to visit Dunedin on the rainy morning but with beautiful sunshine in the afternoon. When we arrived at Larnach Castle, it was foggy and hard see 10m away. However we feel this castle is worth visiting, especially with such a nice and knowledgeable guide Richard "Dick". With his story and background information about the castle, we feel the castle and garden on foggy day match the whole scene. Thank you Richard. We also joined the city tour and enjoyed a quick look at beautiful railway station and botanic garden and Otago university. Thank you Headfirst to make our cruise ship excursions so perfect!

A beautifully restored building set in wonderful gardens
We finally got the Larnach Castle after several years of trying and we were not disappointed. The guide made the tour extremely interesting and the free time in the gardens was a delight.

Headfirst Travel was good to Tour with
We went on a castle and city tour with this company and found it to be a very interesting and informative tour. Our Tour Guide, Lorraine was great too. We visited most of the castle and had some free time to wander the castle grounds before heading back to the city to see the sights. We also got a chance to visit and wander up Baldwin Street too, that was fun!

        Castle tour
Unfortunately there was some renovation going on in the lower sections of the castle. We understand that the history of the original family is in that area, since we couldn’t find any anywhere else. Thankfully we bumped into some staff of the accommodation area, and they were able to inform us of the information/history we missed. Sadly the staff member who met us at the entrance way must have been busy & forgot to present us with our tour guided headphones. We had to self guide our tour. 💔😢

        High Tea too
The adverts make the castle seem majestic, but was a lot smaller than expected. Felt it was overpriced to see garden, castle and high tea. $$ for a mini sandwich, mini pudding, wee merengue and couple other tastes. Felt value for money should've been $45-50 per person. Half price box at the shop was awesome.

Decided to go to Lanarch Castle when passing , we did not go on tour.
Last minute decision to see castle, but once at entrance you really have to proceed, pay either to see garden , or garden and castle can have some food in cafe, we decided to look at garden £17.00 per person . I can see why some people park outside as would be expensive for a large family. The gardens were beautiful, wonderful views . Lots of tour buses arrived just as we were leaving . It is a very windy road up to castle from coast road.

At Dunedin Port decided to take this HOP ON HOP OFF.

Got told we would be sent to.the city centre at 9am but would only be able to start the tour from 11am. Suffice to say it was disorganised. had too many people queueing than there was seats on the bus. No staff had any control. Got off at the Botanic Gardens which was wonderful. Got back on again to a bus that was full and with an excellent tour coach captain that actually stopped the whole coach at the next stop being the university to lead those who were interested on an impromptu tour. Great for a tour but crazy for a HOP ON HOP OFF SERVICE.

Fearing absolute mayhem we decided to not stop anywhere and just go back to the ship early. Going back to the city centre from where the shuttles back to the ship would depart we were told the 2pm one was on the way and by 2.20pm with many people asking the staff what was happening a double decker bus was commandeered to do the transfer back to the ship to take the lever 60 people waiting instead of the 20 seater one that was originally assigned.

Back at the passenger terminal some went to complain and got compensation for it.

I decided not to bother and to get back to the comfort of the ship ASAP.

It was bad organisation and reflects badly for the city of Dunedin.

We had a great day exploring Dunedin on the Hop-on, hop-off double-decker bus.
We were picked up from Port Chalmers and dropped into Dunedin. The driver Bec was very informative with her local knowledge. We did a full circuit first to see the main sights then hopped on and off to see the others. Could always find the big red double-decker bus and used the single decker too. A bit old but did the job well.

We had pre-booked this tour. (Headfirst Hopper Bus)

Our pick-up instructions said we would be picked up from the port. But there was no one there to meet us. After waiting around for 15 mins, I went to the port tourist desk to check the company was still in business. It turns out she had a message for me to go into town myself and pick up the tour there. It was luck I had gone to the tourist desk, as otherwise I would never have known there was a message and would assume we had been let down.
I was a bit put out that I was expected to go to town myself as the tour description explicitly stated that the pickup would be at the port. Fortunately the port was running a complimentary shuttle into town.
When we arrived at town, there was a representative from the tour company at the shuttle stop who directed us to where we would get the tour bus.
The tour bus is a red double decker from the UK (as shown in the picture). Only one bus was being run, so if we had hopped off we would have to wait one hour before we could hop back on.
The bus did not stop at all the advertised stops.

I thought this tour was expensive for what it gave, and it had not given everything that had been promised. Apart from the stop at Baldwin street (the steepest residential street), we could have walked to all the other places and saved ourselves the money.

      Not impressed at all

A good overview of the town. Not the best option in “value for money”. A town walk to the Train Station and/or a taxi to the Castle or Gondola may be a better option.

This is an OK trip and the commentary is excellent but the destination hotel isn't very special. However on the plus side you can choose to be dropped off at the end of town and take a leisurely walk back to the boat.

Thanks for taking the time to review us, we are really glad that you enjoyed listening to our commentary! Our drivers have some really interesting stories and are super knowledgable about the rich history in Dunedin. Yes, it certainly is great having the option to hop on and hop off where you like on this tour.

We took the Hop-On Hop-Off double-decker bus (the “Hopper”). It is a great and economical way to discover the City of Dunedin. You catch the Hopper at the i-Site desk located in the cruise ship's terminal which is located at the ship’s dock. There is also free Wi-Fi in the terminal.

Most of the attractions in Dunedin are concentrated in the downtown area so you can walk to them. However, if you do not want to do a lot of walking, the Hopper is a popular way to discover the city. The Hopper comes every 30 minutes and makes 7 unique stops. The 8th stop ends the loop and is the same as the first stop. It takes only one hour to complete the loop if you stay on the bus. In these stops, you get to see the world’s steepest street, the Botanical Gardens, Otago University (New Zealand’s first university), Otago Museum, the railway station (which also houses a couple of museums), the Settler’s Museum, the Speights Brewery and more.

Knowledgeable drivers gave the commentary. Because of the noise of the bus engines located at the rear of the bus, it is best to sit near the front of the bus to hear the commentaries. There is a Subway eatery in the “Circle” street that is very reasonable with a “Sub of the Day special.” Or you can visit a supermarket offering a variety of sandwiches, snacks, drinks, etc.

Our bus collected from the wharf as scheduled, delivered to the centre of town. We then went to Larnach Castle. What a great home for the period. on return we had the City Sites tour. However the next leg to Olveston Home confusion rained, with our transport being 20 minutes late. Due to this we missed part of the tour. A rushed visit and return to the Golden Princess.

We cruised into Port Chalmers on Feb 16, and had booked directly with Dunedin Railways for the Taieri Gorge Train and City Sights tour. The shuttle to the train station, and the City Sights tour, were arranged through Headfirst. They were great! They met us with a sign at the Port, made sure we were safely delivered to the station with great commentary from our driver. Once we had done the gorge train, a driver was once again waiting outside the station, to take us on a tour of the city. We had a great time in the Double Decker red bus, and saw all the main attractions of the city. They then delivered us back to our ship in plenty of time. I highly recommend this company.
