What to expect
Book your shore excursion in the morning or afternoon, beginning with pickup at Port Chalmers. Board a minivan with a small group of travelers for the scenic drive toward the suburb of North Dunedin. Your guide makes a stop at Baldwin Street, the world's steepest residential street. The drive continues up the Leith Valley toward the Craigieburn Reserve for views of the city, Ross Creek Reservoir, and Otago Harbour. Learn about efforts to conserve the lowland Rimu forest and hear of the early pioneers who settled the area. Then, pass by the upscale homes of Maori Hill and see other fine architecture, such as Olveston House, on a drive through the Dunedin Town Belt. Stop at the Octagon in the city center for a look at several significant buildings and a statue of the Scottish poet, Robert Burns. Down the road, focus your camera on the historic Dunedin Railway Station, one of the most photographed buildings in the southern hemisphere. Upon reaching the Otago Peninsula, search the shore for wildlife such as yellow-eyed penguins and New Zealand fur seals. Admire unrivaled vistas from several lookouts over the eponymous harbor before a final stop in the leafy suburb of St. Clair. Stroll along the beachfront promenade at one of the South Island's most popular surf spots, before the return trip to the cruise port.

Half day
Feb 2020 • Couples
Chris picked us up from the ship in a minibus. As he’s lived in Dunedin for a number of years he was very knowledgeable about the area. We went to see the sea lions on a lovely beach, saw stunning scenery and went to the old station and the steepest street. Chris lived in Scotland before NZ so told us of a great pub (The Duke of Wellington) that sold loads of UK ales-great tip thanks Chris 👍🏻 Lovely trip would definitely recommend.

A very enjoyable and interesting tour of this fabulous part of the world. We were taken to the usual sightseeing areas but with additional stops at the beaches to see sealions. Thanks and would recommend this tour.

Great Trip
Nov 2019
A very good tour saw most of the sites around Dunedin great views over the city, steepest street, Railway station etc. Then on to the beaches and a short walk over a sand dune we saw a family of sea lions basking in the sun.
Our driver Glenn was very informative and entertaining a most enjoyable time.

Awesome with Tour with Marty. We were well taken care of with great opportunities to explore the area. We got the chance to see brown female seals on the beach.

Thanks for your feedback, we'll pass it onto Marty, he'll be really thrilled because he mentioned you were a great group. Seeing a female NZ sea-lion is a real treat - they're pretty rare! The population here continues to grow to hopefully they become an increasingly common sight in the future! You're a Back to Nature Legend! Haste Ye Back!

Loved the Railway Station
Nov 2019
Our Tour Guide Ross I think his name was, was very informative & did a great commentary. Took us to so many of Dunedins' highlights including the steepest road. I enjoyed the lush green countryside with so many sheep grazing on steep hillsides. Of particular interest to me was the Railway Station, it was so fascinating with a set back in time feel. The city is very clean with beautiful parks & gardens.

Bays, Beaches and Views - Back to Nature Tours
Dec 2018 • Couples
The tour we took was called "Bays, Beaches and Views" and it was outstanding.
Our guide was great and showed us all the sights around Dunedin, but the highlight of the trip was some beautiful secluded beached out on the peninsula. One was home to a number of sea lions, which were amazing to watch.
I'd highly recommend any small tour with 'Back to Nature Tours'.

Great overview of Dunedin including City, railway station, "green landscape" and fantastic beaches. Unfortunately sea lions were gone fishing while we stayed there. All over great experience with very friendly guide.

Compact half day tour.
Jan 2019 • Friends
Glen, was an excellent tour guide. The itinerary gave us a quick overview of the area....the city, especially the beautiful railway station and stunning coastline, including fur seals.
A level 2 walk along sandy bush track to see the fur seals could be challenging for some.
