What to expect
After morning pickup at the cruise port in Dunedin, transfer to the Dunedin Railway Station, a 19th-century Renaissance revival-style building designed by an architect nicknamed ‘Gingerbread George.’ Make use of some free time to see the historic station, then use the provided ticket to board the Taieri Gorge Railway. The train is equipped with heated carriages, large windows and restrooms, as well as open-air viewing platform cars. Chug along the Taieri Plains, crossing bridges and viaducts that span the Taieri Gorge and other scenic canyons. The train hugs the curves around the mountains and slows down at scenic viewpoints, providing great vantage points on the South Island’s rugged wilderness. Hear informative commentary about the the region during the train ride, which takes two hours each way. You can upgrade to include a gourmet box lunch, or purchase refreshments at the onboard cafe. At the last station, you'll have a short break to stretch your legs and to check out Pukerangi before the return journey to Dunedin. Upon you return to Dunedin, your guide meets you at the train station and takes you on your afternoon tour of the Otago Peninsula. Make stops at several locations with sweeping views — photographers will love the postcard-perfect scenery. Visit beaches where you may glimpse whales, dolphins or some native New Zealand wildlife, then return to the cruise port in the late afternoon.

Wonderful experience
Feb 2020
The trip began with a very friendly guide meeting us at the port exit. The day got even better from then. The train journey through wonderful New Zealand countryside was fantastic. There were so many photo opportunities with the speed of the train enabling easy photography. We particularly enjoyed the trip to the Otago peninsula . Our guide was excellent, pointing out birds and wildlife. The highlight was a lucky encounter with a sea lion on the beach.

Hi Annie, Thank you for your 5 star review! It was a pretty quite day for us when you arrived, we're glad you got the extra attention. It doesn't really matter what direction you travel in here in Dunedin because very soon you get fantastic views. The Otago Peninsula certainly is the 'jewel in the crown' of our scenery - great to see you enjoyed that component. You're a Back to Nature Tours Legend, Haste Ye Back!

Hi rma7477 Thanks for your feedback - we're lucky to have an amazing coastline here in Dunedin. Your tour allowed you to see that and Inland Otago all in the same day. All the best!

Taieri Gorge and Otago Peninsula
Dec 2019
We were looking for a tour that included the Taieri Gorge Railway, a little of the Otago Peninsula scenery, and a few of the highlights through town. I am very glad we found Back to Nature Tours, and this great itinerary. It is exactly what we were looking for! Our guide, Glenn, was extremely knowledgeable and was great at what he does. The scenery through the gorge was amazing! What a great day!

Wonderful train excursion followed by the highlights of Dunedin and the Otago Peninsula
Nov 2019
This was one of our favorite tours. It's worth just going to the train station, even if you are not going to get on a train. The train ride takes about 2 hours. It crosses lovely scenery, bridges, tunnels, hillsides with yellow flowers, sheep, and cattle everywhere you look. Very picturesque. Once we got to the end of the ride, our tour leader picked us up and drove us around Otago Peninsula. He noticed that there were sea lions on the beach, so we hurried to get to see them. Suddenly, it started to hail! This was in late November. We learned that the southern part of New Zealand gets its weather current from Antartica, which was quite a surprise. It was freezing cold for a few minutes and then the storm passed. At least we did get a picture of the seals.

Our tour guide, Glenn, took us to the bottom of the steepest street in the world. I thought it was Lombard Street in San Francisco, but according to what we learned, it's really Baldwin Street in Dunedin.

All-in-all, it was a really enjoyable day with Glenn and Back To Nature Tours.

Great day out
Mar 2019 • Couples
Had a great day out on this tour with Back to Nature tours. Itinerary adjusted to time ship docked so pick up from dock and return to ship in afternoon seamless. Coach road trip through country side for 1.5 hours to meet train back to Dunedin. Saw heaps more this way than other tours where you catch train each way. Upon return to Dunedin went on city sights tour then drive around bay to view beautiful scenery. Can buy simple sandwich and drink on train. Would recommend taking a drink and snack as its a busy schedule. Thanks for showing us around the beautiful city of Dunedin.

What a great adventure
Feb 2019 • Couples
Did this day tour whilst doing a cruise. Glen picked us and and dropped us back.
Dropped us off at the train station, the gorge train ride was really interesting, good quality food available on the train for lunch, morning tea. Had a running commentary throughout the trip.
Glen was there to collect us and take us sight seeing around Dunedin. Got us back by 4pm ready for us to get back on board the boat. About a dozen on the mini bus. We had a great day. Glen was knowledgable about Dunedin.

Fabulous Day Trip on the Taieri Gorge Railway
Feb 2019 • Couples
The cruise line changed the time of arrival significantly from early morning to noon due to low tide. We notified Chris of this change and he was very quick to accommodate, which was fantastic as some other passengers not with Back To Nature Tours had to cancel their shore excursions. Chris was able to alter the Taieri Gorge Railway Tour to the afternoon. The tour had to be rejigged but it went off without a hitch.

We had Glenn as our tour guide and he was terrific. He drove us to beautiful vistas, gave us opportunities to get out of the van for some photos, and he shared his knowledge of the area. He escorted us to the train car to ensure we got on the right one, but gave us a bit of time to walk around and admire the historical Dunedin station.

It was a terrific day, and we highly recommend Back to Nature Tours’ Taieri Gorge Railway Tour.

Beautiful part of the world
Jan 2019 • Friends
Pick-up was smooth and well-run. Coach was new and clean. Taieri Gorge Railway journey was stunning and even the food from the dining car - scrumptious Aussie meat pies! - was really good, if a tad expensive. After the 4 hour train ride, we were picked up by a small coach and driven around the Otago Peninsula by our enthusiastic driver/guide where we visited the stunning Smails Beach, among other picturesque locations.
