About
Waterfalls, deserted beaches, coastal rainforest, and rare wildlife can all be found in the Catlins. Explore this remote part of the South Island on a private day trip from Dunedin. You'll learn about early Maori inhabitants and European settlers from your personal guide, who has a Department of Conservation (DOC) concession with access to unforgettable places.

What to expect
  • Starting out from your Dunedin accommodation in the comfort of your private vehicle, this full-day tour follows a southern scenic route to the Catlins. You'll visit the Otago town of Brighton before a photo stop at the mouth of the mighty Taieri River. Pass through Waihola and Balclutha before arriving in Owaka, gateway to the Catlins. A brief walk with your guide gets you to Nugget Point, which features the iconic rugged shoreline of the Otago Peninsula. From a viewing platform, search the waters for seabirds, New Zealand fur seals and elephant seals (December–February). Next up is a picturesque bay where rare New Zealand sea lions (aka Hooker's sea lions) are known to haul onto shore. Learn about the breeding habits of these marine mammals before a drive through native coastal rainforest. Another short hike takes you to the Catlins’ tallest waterfall. Listen for birdsong in the bush and learn to identify native plants en route to McLean Falls, arguably the most spectacular of cascades in the region. Further south, keep an eye out for Hector’s dolphins, attracted to the nutrient-rich waters in warmer months. After light refreshments, follow your guide through an ancient petrified forest whose fossilized remains are revealed at low tide. Finish your private day trip with the return drive to your hotel in Dunedin, or opt for drop-off in Invercargill or the Stewart Island Ferry Terminal.

Wonderful, personal experience

Trii was very helpful and caring. She brought hot water and some snacks for us just in case we get stuck on the road! The scenery at Catlins is unbeatable. Trii told us a lot of information around the area. We enjoyed the tour a lot.

A close look at a wild and wonderful part of the South Island
Apr 2018 • Friends
We sought a guided tour to some of New Zealand's wilder areas following a conference in Dunedin and found just what we hoped in a day-long tour of the Catlins by Back to Nature Tours. Three of us were picked up at our hotel, and our guide offered not only a comprehensive look at this rugged coastline between Dunedin and Invercargill but also informed commentary about what we were seeing. One could rent a car and drive through the Catlins on one's own, but we appreciated the enormous amount of additional information provided by our guide. Additionally, he knew of some locations that an outside visitor would have missed. A day well spent.
