About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- inthecarallday0 contributionsOur guide was friendly and knowledgeable. He was also timely and brought small snacks and water. The train was amazing! Our guide was timely, friendly and knowledge. He brought along small snacks and water. The waterfall and train were amazingWritten 24 October 2024
- thub20180 contributionsGreat tour for solo travelerGood valued tour. I got picked up at the hotel then went on the Tranz Alpine train and experienced hours of bliss: magnificent scenery (mountain high, valley deep, green farm land with the cute sheep, lamb, cow ...). Then our tour guide Anuj picked us up again at Arthur Pass Train station and took us to a little restful town for lunch, the foods are beautiful too, encountered with the cheeky Kea. Many stops along the way with dramatic landscape and Anuj commentary to help us appreciate the places even more. Anuj is a master of organisation, he had everything arranged for us to enjoy things along the way just like we would have done in a private car trip. He looks after every individual on tour. Highly recommended. One personal note, the open carriage on the Tranz Alpine train is not worth it in my opinion, it is too windy and fast moving for decent photography, I witnessed and encountered some examples of worst humanity that I can't unsee. This do spoil my perfect train trip, a little.Written 19 October 2024
- Sightsee463609002430 contributionsAmazingMy husband and I enjoyed it a lot. Such a wonderful day! Highly recommend!we will come again in the future and we will recommend it to our friendsWritten 18 October 2024
- pragyasinghal960 contributionsWe were well taken care ofThe tour was absolutely fantastic in itself, with a well planned itinerary and magnificent views. But what really made the tour amazing was our guide, Anuj, who was extremely considerate and helpful. From ensuring we had water bottles and snacks after trekking, to providing detailed commentary and helpful tips for the treks, to helping me find a Kea, he was always went above and beyond in ensuring our comfort! Even when the weather turned rainier and windier than we expected, he was well prepared with umbrellas and ponchos! Just amazing.Written 7 October 2024
- emilysR7209BM0 contributionsAbsolutely divine!!The views absolutely amazing…taken lots of pix!! Bus driver very accommodating to everyone’s needs. Love the open carriage train!Written 4 October 2024
- 824allisona0 contributionsDefinitely worth the trip!A grrat day out with adequate time for investigating at various lookouts and walking tracks. Interesting commentary and friendly bus environment. The highlight of our NZ trip for my partner.Written 30 September 2024
- Road490901127830 contributionsExcellent trip, a must see.Our driver was very pleasant, knowledgeable and anticipated all our needs. We learned about the economy, terrain and history of New Zealand. Walks and activities after the train ride were well thought out and really interesting. Best paid trip I went on in my 16 day trip to New Zealand!Written 24 September 2024
- Anarutraveller0 contributionsGreat day out.My wife and I had a great day out. Weather forecast was miserable but decided to book night before and go anyway. It turned out to be a beautiful day weather wise. Anuj was a wonderful guide exactly as previous reviews have said. Good commentary, fabulous scenery and nice little touches with on board snacks. I highly recommend this day trip.Written 15 September 2024
- waynetJ7199XP0 contributionsReally scenic tripVery friendly staff did all they could do to make everyone feel welcome. Awesome scenery. Only thing that let the day down was a very long wait for the meal service to be ready on the way backWritten 27 August 2024
- laurabrown3330 contributionsA really fun day out! This was a really excellent day trip and a lovely way to see a gorgeous part of the world! Our guide was prepared for everything with so much attention to detail- abundant snacks, ponchos, umbrellas, and loads of local knowledge. The stops were all really beautiful and worthwhile, and the day was well timed. I really appreciated the correspondence before the trip reminding us of what to bring- my one regret is that we didn’t bring headphones to use on the train so that we could listen to the commentary, and it would have been helpful if this had been included in the email advising us what to bring. An absolutely great day out and would highly recommend it to anyone! Thanks to our lovely guide, Anuj, for taking such good care of us!Written 26 August 2024
- LutheranLadySanDiego0 contributionsMisty Day Did Not Dampen Our DelightThis was the only day of our three-week trip that had a slight rain. However, the views from the train were still gorgeous and our guide provided us with an abundance of options to enjoy the area. This is the location for much of the Lord of the Rings filming. That alone should be an incentive for many. We loved the abundance of waterfalls, lakes and streams. The alpine rain forest was beautiful.Written 26 May 2024
- Anonymous8550 contributions#1 tour guide ever! Train views are okay, not amazing, but hikes are adventurousOur guide stood in pelting rain handing us umbrellas, pulling ponchos over us in wind and searched for late returning walkers on trails with great care and disregard for his own comfort. He was very kind and patient. I would recommend this company for tours but the actual Southern Alps are overstated. Weather obscured view from the train and open car ridiculously packed. Lunch was a free for all at the two restaurants that are open but that's not why we were on this trip. Very good hikes!Written 29 April 2024
- apriljS4789DZ0 contributionsGreat experience in any weather.Even with bad weather on the horizon, we had a very pleasant and beautiful ride from Christchurch to Greymouth and back in one day. TranzAlpine had communicated with us the day before that there was a change the train would not be able to make the trip due to pending weather. I appreciated knowing in advance. I think I would have been much more stressed if I would have been told the morning of the trip. They didn't even know for sure until the train showed up. Thankfully we had a great ride with some rain but many spectacular views along the way. Seats were comfortable, audio commentary was educational but had a few inaudible spots that kept you in a questionable state. That was not enough to bring down this scenic trip.Written 22 April 2024
- G2173ANandrewd0 contributionsWanted to experience the trainThe trip was great. The tour guide was excellent! Definitely worth the visit. A lot to take in and the people there are very friendly and knowledgeable.Written 19 April 2024
- toffeeman_90 contributionsThe day was one of the best we have ever experiencedWe enjoyed our TranzAlpine train to Arthurs Pass and return by minivan. The guide did an exceptionally good job looking after us, and he was so well prepared, with umbrellas, ponchos(which were needed in Arthurs Pass and for the Devils Punchbowl walk) and chocolates/ chips and other treats. The TranzAlpine train seats were in the best location to see the magnificent views , front carriage, forward facing on the right hand side. (albeit the open air carriage got very full with photographers from throughout the train, NZSI could not help that). Arthurs Pass cafes lunch options were a bit limlted, but ok. The weather was dry after Arthurs Pass and the guide made several stops at scenic and interesting locations, which he was informative about. The day was one of the best we have ever experienced. Well done NZSI.Written 15 April 2024

Amazing trip! Our tour guide cum driver Anuj was a gem. He reached on time for pick-up, provided all details of the itinerary, adequate options for periodic breaks and exploring different destinations. He also provided interesting commentary of the locations. Really loved the refreshments he brought for us. Trip was well structured and not rushed with adequate time to spend at each destination. Look forward to more memorable trips with NZSI in future.

Couldn't recommend this tour more! The tour was so well organized and our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. We made lots of great stops along the way and the ride was very comfortable. There were 7 of us on the tour which was a nice number. My favourite part was visiting the Tasman lakes glacier where we saw icebergs in the lake!! We were able to walk right down to the lake and stand on the ice, it was amazing. I would also recommend going in winter because we were able to walk through the snow.

What can I say. Anju, our tour guide, was an amazing guide. He greeted us as we were picked up, provided useful information prior to getting of the bus to visit Mount Cook, both glacier lakes and Tasman Glacier. His guidance helped us to maximize our time to visit the incredible Tasman Glacier and other spots during the trip. Anuj provided us with water and snacks during the tour. Kind, empathetic and extremely knowledgeable guide. Highly recommend picking this tour by Anju!! Kudos

Great day tour from Christchurch. The scenery was lovely (we were very fortunate that we had great weather on the day too). Our driver/tour guide was punctual, nice, and very informative. It is a long day though but there were plenty of snacks on the journey and sufficient restroom stops on the way. I'd definitely recommend this tour for people who aren't familiar with the area and not wanting to drive (there is no cell service at the Tasman Glacier area).

If you are traveling oversea and not comfortable with driving in New Zealand like us, I think the tour is a good option. They have multiple pick up locations including our hotel. The driver was very knowledgeable and nice, and kept the trip on schedule.
The tour was long, 13 hours at least, had to spend long time sitting in the bus each way. The view of Mount Cook and Lake Tekapo really depends on weather during the day. It was very cloudy when we got to the lake, the view was not great as pictures. And we were lucky to see the beautiful view at Mount Cook with sun came out.

This was a brilliant day out so don't be put off by the travel time. Our tour guide was super helpful, caring and informative. We had regular stops for drinks and comfort breaks, and the trip was broken up nicely so that it didn't feel too long. The tour guide gave interesting facts and information throughout the day and we enjoyed it a lot.
They provided water, ponchos, chocs and stopped at a good cafe for lunch.

I had a wonderful experience in a comfortable van with Kevin as our guide.
We passed through the picturesque Cromwell, valleys, vineyards, sheep farms.
We stopped at the Wrinkly Rams restaurant for a light meal. I enjoyed the peace and wooden architecture of the site.
As we approached The Aoraki Mountain Cook National Park, I also witnessed the beautiful brown mountains Lindis Mountains, Central Otago, Omarama along with the turquoise waters of Lakes Matheson, Tekapo.
The Highway 80 was an easy road to drive pretty flat.
I did the Hooker Valley Track, enjoyed a drink at the Hermitage Hotel, visited the Sir Edmund Hillary museum and also enjoyed the learning experience in the modern Visitors Centre.
Kevin shared his history and geography knowledge which made the trip even more enjoyable.
Highly recommend this tour.

Great day trip! The guide was very knowledgeable. We had great weather and Lake Tekapo/Mount Cook are both just stunning. Lots of stops throughout the day for the toilet and food as well. I would 100% recommend.

Except for how long the day was a perfect trip. Our driver/guide was terrific: had little snacks and water, coins when needed for toilets, good commentary on places we visited, recommendations for things to see and do. The tour itself hit all the high points for mid South Island.

First of all, the tour guide was wonderful. He was very knowledgeable, explained things well, and kept us well informed on timing. The spots we visited were beautiful, especially the many views of Aoraki. However, the tour description never said anything about being gone over 13 hours and likely to miss dinner. And the seats in the bus were way too small, both width and length. I am not long legged and still kept smashing my knees the whole day.

Kia ora JoeO104,
Thank you for taking the time to provide your valuable feedback in regards to your recent trip with us.
We are glad to hear that you had a beautiful day to Aoraki Mount Cook; and found the guide wonderful & knowledgeable.
We would like to let you know that as stated in the description of the tour itinerary, it is an approximately 13 hours day tour. As this is a very long day, these timings can vary due to traffic and/ or other several reasons. However; upon checking the log book, I can confirm that you were dropped off at your accommodation 10 minutes past the 13 hours mark.
We have recently upgraded our entire fleet with brand new vehicles last year. These are one of the best vehicles available in New Zealand for small group operators.
We have taken your feedback on-board and our management is in the process of looking ways to spread the spacing between the seats; in order to provide more legroom for our travellers.
We hope that you enjoy the rest of your time here in New Zealand and have a safe trip back home.
Kind Regards,
NZSI Team

I'm in Queenstown over Christmas and I would love to do the Mount Cock Tour on the 25. or 26.12. Is there any chance to find a place on a waiting list for one of the dates? It would be a wonderful Christmas present, if there will be one spare place left. Best regards, Maika

I have an issue with high altitude. What is the highest in altitude during this entire tour including the place for lunch and for hiking?
Written 23 February 2023
No issue at all . You hardly climb, what maybe only 100 m at most .
