About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Monica R0 contributionsAverageThe cabin was average , considering how much your paying money wise Food was terrible and they didn’t offer much service for the whole trip. PriceyWritten 2 February 2025
- Gerry M0 contributionsDon’t bother if you’ve already toured around the beautiful countrysideWhere do we start ! After driving ourselves around North and South NZ for more than 3 weeks , we found this train journey very disappointing for a number of reasons. Firstly , we were probably spoilt by visiting other spectacular areas , attractions and scenery in gorgeous sunshine , this no doubt raised our expectations that the Tranzalpine train journey would be nothing short of spectacular. How wrong we were ! The train speed was painfully slow , the weather was poor ( obv this can’t be helped) and the journey was probably one of the most boring experiences we have had during our holiday here in fabulous NZ. We were also ‘blessed’ with the misfortune of a group boarding at Arthur’s Pass consisting of two different nationalities who had no volume filter whatsoever . It was a relief when the journey ended . On the plus side, the organisation was excellent and the staff were lovely and as helpful as they could be.Written 25 January 2025

- robertlQ6410LA0 contributionsNot worth the "plus" serviceWe traveled the TranzAlpine from Greymouth to the half-way point at Arthur's Pass, spent the night there, then took the return train back to Greymouth. The first day travel was under the "Scenic Plus" ticket ticket at a premium of $250 NZ each which was to include a gourmet dinner in special coach. We never received the main course and the NZ rail refused even a partial refund. The added expense isn't worth the money even if we had full service. Better to buy a regular ticket and purchase food on board from the cafe car.Written 29 November 2024

- SoEveryDayLacey0 contributionsWorth the Cost: Incredible Travel ExperienceWe needed to make the trek from one side of New Zealand to the other side and this was the most beautiful way to do that. It's so romantic to travel by train. Every seat provides a gigantic window to see the amazing views. Plus, there's an open air cart you can walk to for fresh air and more views. There's a cafe on board and we chose the seats with a table in front of us - definitely recommend. Felt so much more spacious and just luxurious.Written 10 November 2024
- hadrianm20140 contributionsProbably better than the Canadian Rocky MountaineerWe travelled from Greymouth to Christchurch in Scenic Plus with table service and a great outside viewing vestibule. One of our party is Coeliac and the gluten free meal was exceptional and far superior to that offered on Rocky Mountaineer. There’s a dedicated smartphone app which provides personal commentary of the journey which is so well narrated and a perfect accompaniment to the wonderful scenery that at times was indistinguishable from Alaska. As a half day trip, I’d highly recommend it.Written 20 October 2024
- lds5920170 contributionsAmazingTrip of a lifetime from Arthur’s Pass to Christchurch. Very comfortable train, great visibility and absolutely stunning views throughout the journey. It’s definitely a Great Railway Journey of the World. We’d happily do it again. However we couldn’t get any commentary because we don’t use ear buds on our phones and they’ve removed the headsets. The app didn’t load to give feedback but honestly it didn’t bother us at all.Written 12 October 2024
- Kathleen W0 contributionsWonderful trip! What a wonderful adventure during our NZ travels. It gave us a much needed break from driving yet we still got to see the beautiful country side. Easy to book - the gals at the station are great! We did not upgrade to the vip pass as we were seated at a table so we could enjoy a beverage and dining. Some standard seats do not have a dining table so they are likely fine if you don’t plan on eating or drinkingWritten 18 September 2024

They said they emailed me but I never received one. Only found out train was canceeled when we arrived ay Greymouth Station. All they could say was would you like a refund or to book another day? They couldn't care less if you had booked accomodation at the other end and flights too.Written 10 April 2024
- ScrumptiousSolent0 contributionsSuch a treat! We did the scenic plus experience from Greymouth to Christchurch which included a served lunch. The journey is long (2:15pm to 7pm) but it went quickly thanks to the scenery (especially on a clear day) which is stunning. We had two forward facing seats within a bay of 4 (the other two are left empty deliberately) and a table. We enjoyed a meat platter for lunch and a two course hot dinner. Both were served with complimentary soft drinks/wine/beer/hot drinks for the duration of the journey. You can also access a private outdoor carriage to take photos without the windows in the way. We went one way having dropped our hire car off at Greymouth and that was a great decision. You can place your luggage in a separate luggage carriage (up to 23kg per person allowed) and you can carry on a backpack/bag of up your 7kg. A great way to enjoy seeing the countryside without driving!Written 4 April 2024
- christinemccartney0 contributionsIncredible scenery and feel the wind in your hairStandard tickets were sold out so we had to fork out for "scenic-plus". Glad we did! It was trip highlight. Crisp white napkins, unending bubbly, great service and a lovely lamb stew. The 5-hours of scenery was unforgettable - simply SPECTACULAR. Being a photographer, my bliss was standing in the 'open viewing carriage' where you can take photos through open windows not hampered by reflective glass. It was a sensory delight being out there, smelling train smells, whipping through tunnels, across gravel riverbeds and mountains, the wind in your hair!Written 4 April 2024

The journey is well organised. Took a taxi from cathederal Square in Christchurch to the train station, which cost about $20, NZ. Reception at the station was pleasant, tickets and luggage organised quickly. We did the scenic option, and there is a scenic plus which includes a meal. A cafe car for those who wish to buy coffee and snacks. The train is extremely comfortable, airline style seats, a few bays of 4, with tables, but mostly 2 and 2 configuration. There are a couple of open carriages for views. I did read the right side of the train was best for viewing, and we had right side tickets. It was worth requesting at check in.
We stopped briefly at Arthur's pass, to add extra engines to get thru the tunnel. The trip to Greymouth took approximately 4 hours. At Greymouth you can coordinate with the intercity bus for transfer to Franz Joseph and Fox Glaciers. Train arrives in Greymouth at 1 pm, prebook the bus which leaves at 1.30 pm.

Lakeside Romantic Getaway is great value for money & such a great experience- really could do with a name change from “romantic” though to appeal to a broader market.
We were part of a group of six couples who all thought this was a fantastic experience. The morning tea on the train was great & the afternoon tea on the way back was great too- very generous.
Hotel Lake Brunner picked up from the train & took up back the next day.
Dinner & breakfast was included & the meals were large & generous.
Lovely platters were also included for the afternoon & they were beautiful presented & generous. The hot pool was fantastic & generous with our time allocation.
Our accommodation was great with comfortable beds.
The train ride with allocated seating was really good.
We enjoyed walks around the lake & village.
The absolute highlight of the trip
though has to be the staff especially all the staff at the hotel & the train staff especially Matthew.
We highly recommend this wonderful package.

This was well worth the money. We booked the basic fare but we still had assigned seating, comfortable seats, headphones provided for the commentary. There was adequate storage at the seats for our hand luggage. The larger bags were managed by the stewards. There were plugs at the seats to charge our phones. The food on board was a bit pricey but not as much as would be expected and it was fairly good. The staff were all very friendly. Be advised: there is a steep portion of the trip when they close the bathrooms and suspend food service. I think it only lasts 20 min and they do give you advance notice, but be prepared.
The train was on time. The views were spectacular even on a rainy day. There is a commentary that runs through headset so you don't have to listen if you don't want to. It was great for the first half of the trip but at some point it got out of sync with our location and from that point on all of the descriptions were about things we had already passed.
The outdoor viewing car was somewhat disappointing. It is open air so you can take pictures without any glare from windows, however the openings aren't very high so you actually have better views from your seat.

We had a good experience with the Tranzalpine train from Christchurch to Greymouth. About a week prior to the journey, I called KiwiRail and asked for a request if we can be seated on the right side (forward-facing) of the train and they did their best to accommodate our request as there's no guarantee where you'll be seated. But based on my experience, it didn't really matter which side you were seated as you will experience great views on both sides. Although the train was full of passengers on that day, we managed to go to the open-air viewing. What I really like about this train journey is the commentary as you pass by each point of interest. You get to learn a bit of the history of the place. I gave it 4 stars as I thought it's a little expensive (NZ$219 for a standard one) based on my experience. The views became boring towards the end of the journey, and all you can see are trees on both sides. Also, with the price, I think that food should've been included.

Difficult one to review this. We travelled from Christchurch to Greymouth back in the same day. The scenery doesn't disappoint and you get a bit of everything. Some industrial areas between Christchurch and Rolleston, then vineyards and agriculture followed by the "big event' mountain vistas. Photos are best taken from the open sided viewing carriages otherwise you end up with too much window reflection. The crew do close the viewing carriages twice going East to West and once in the opposite direction for safety reasons - probably when there is a potential build-up of diesel fumes while slow-climbing through tunnels.
Despite a camera full of great photos, I think the tickets are a bit over-priced and no-one offered the promised earphones for listening to the onboard commentary.

We travelled one-way from Greymouth to Christchurch, with a two-night stopover at Arthurs Pass.
We were lucky with good weather & excellent visibility. The train was on-time, and had lots of free spaces, so was very relaxed & comfortable. Our heavy bags were checked in, and handled by the train staff.
We booked the "standard" fare
Because the train was almost empty, we could get great views from the viewing car, but take care that that if the train is more full, it might be near impossible to use the viewing car. Consider a "VIP" ticket at busy times, as there are more viewing cars per passenger seats.
The commentary through the headphones was clear, interesting & useful, but of course it does not work when away from your seat !
If you break the journey at Arthurs Pass, be aware that the station there has a shelter, but is not manned and has no other faculties. There is a visitor centre a couple of 100 meters away, which is warmer & comfortable if you need to wait.
Overall, the journey was a real highlight of our trip and highly recommended.

Spectacular scenery on this 4 hour train ride. The train is clean and the ride is smooth. There is a food car with packaged food and drink options. The train was full for most of our journey so the open air observation car was too packed to enjoy. But the large windows in the passenger cars offer nearly as good a view. Free earphones are provided so riders can listen to periodic recordings about the terrain and history. Recordings are available in English and mandarin. Service is very good with employees walking through to collect rubbish frequently.

I took the TranzAlpine train from Christchurch across the Southern Alps to Greymouth, on the West Coast. This train ride is one of the most scenic in the world. For the first part of the journey, we travelled across the Canterbury Plains. The Southern Alps can be seen in the distance.
Then the train followed the Waimakariri River. Canterbury is noted for its wide braided rivers. As we got closer to the Alps, it started to cloud up. We crossed the Southern Alps via a long tunnel. On the western side, it was raining.
The previous weekend, they had snow in the mountain pass which knocked out the signals. As a result my train was delayed. My luggage was tagged with a special tag since I had a connection to a coach in Greymouth. When we arrived nearly twenty minutes late, my luggage was quickly offloaded and I was able to make my transfer without any problems.

I booked a routine scenic package from Christchurch to Arthurs Pass. After some hiking, I returned to Christchurch the same days.
First the views are amazing. I enjoyed the open viewing car for certain parts., especially on the return trip from Arthurs Pass to Christchurch when the train was emptier. The staff was very kind and friendly.
Certain things I did NOT like…
There was a large group of Chinese tourists. They were loud and I could not hear any of the announcements made from the staff. They would come into our seats to take photos. Finally, when I was in the open car, I was pushed and one person actually rested his long lens camera on my shoulder and elbow on my hand to take photos.
I asked him to please not touch me but he either did not understand me or ignored me so I had to push him off.
Let me also state I am asian myself.
Maybe announcements need to be made in other languages about staying in your assigned seat and no physical touching.
The ride from Arthurs Pass back to Christchurch was much quieter so was able to see more of the views in peace.

Such a relaxing way to go to & from the West Coast with stunning scenery along the way.
The well-spaced seats and the massive windows are great and if there are 3 or 4 of you, you can have seats facing each other with a small table inbetween. That is definitely a good feature if travelling with small children. Found the cafe food average (could definitely recommend a different date scone supplier!) and the viewing cars certainly don't offer any better view than from your seat - might be good for videos perhaps. The onboard headphones with random commentary along the way is interesting and well worth listening to. Pick up & drop off at Darfield was also definitely appreciated.
I would also recommend RaD Car hire from the Greymouth Railway Station (must book before you go) Great service and pickup & drop off.

Hi there, catching the train from GREYMOUTH tomorrow - we’re excited, and hoping for good seats! Does anyone know: If we get there early, are we more likely to get a better seat, or is it random allocation? Thank you so much!

It's all on the website for Great Journeys of New Zealand. Prices, times, everything you can book in advance. Would recommend motel 239 Lincoln in Addington, Christchurch for an overnight stay as they offer a free shuttle to the train station.

Can anybody tell us what site sell the best priced tickets Christchurch to greymouth one way.
Written 15 August 2019
Someone has commented not to book online because the prices are double. This is not accurate and depends whether the train is running the entire way. Due to a land slip the train was not running greyMouth to Arthur’s Pass when we did it in October. We were automatically refunded 50% of the journey fee because of this. So we paid the full amount and got a refund that was credited to our card before we got home. If you phone them and book they would not charge the full amount up front and would give you the discount. They are not ripping you off either way. As a country that gets a lot of rain and where slippages are relatively common it would not be worth reconfiguring their website all the time.
The train gets busy, especially in summer months, so I would recommend booking in advance. There were dates that we could not get seats in October.
