- W7793GDjudithm0 contributionsShocking 1 hour wait in the queueViews were amazing but… the hour wait in the queue completely spoilt the day. Sadly we arrived as coaches dropped off what appeared to be the entire boatload from the cruise ship moored below. No offer from staff to alternate those not from the cruise ship. Due to age all needed assistance to access the gondolas and the whole operation was woeful and painful, exacerbated by staff unbelievably holding up the gondola to ask if you wanted an expensive photograph taking of your visit….choose your day wisely to visit otherwise you waste a whole morning and certainly don’t need a photograph to remember the visit!Written 13 October 2024

The commentary is really good, the tram ride is fun in very old tramcars, and it covers all the main destinations - art gallery, art centre, markets etc. We did the complete circuit first then did stops on the second round.Written 21 July 2024
- revuall0 contributionsA blast from the past and an easy way to explore ChristchurchWith our friends we enjoyed exploring Christchurch on these old trams - some originally from Sydney. The old advertising from yesteryear that was still in some carriages added to the charm. We first did a full lap of the city then returned top various locations we chose to get off at. The staff were friendly and informative, and all in all a memorable day was had.Written 8 June 2024

- mssddj0 contributionsCute Activity in ChristchurchThis was a cute activity and the views from the top of the Gondola were great! - margiebrinkman0 contributionsFun way to become familiar with Christchurch. The day we initiated our pass to hop on- hop off was very windy. Note that you need to schedule your punt excursion. Finding the bus station takes a little doing, so allow yourself time to do that. We found the bus station where we were to meet bus #8, which did a little investigating, rode the bus out only to find the gondola not running. So pay attention to how windy it is because the gondola cannot safely run in very windy conditions. Luckily, we immediately caught a bus back in time for our punt ride. The weather had drastically improved and we loved the sunny punt ride.Written 3 February 2024

It thought it’s not worth it because you could definitely go around the city by foot and probably doesn’t need to pay 20 bucks but this tram tour is so worth it. It’s so informative and would recommend it to do right after you arrived to the city so you could plan what to do or where to go next. I actually ended up hopping on to the tram a few times in a day cause I found it so fun!

The tram is a fun way to travel around the city. The commentary is good and can be heard easily. It's a good idea to buy early in the morning and get on tthe first tram for the entire trip then choose where you want to get on/off. Christchurch is gradually rebuidindg and from the commentary you can learn about what has occurred and what the new buildings are and the plans for the future.
You ca also buy a tram ticket along with a ticket to other attractios eg Botanic Gardens tour, Gondola, Punting and this can save a bit.
We found the office staff to be not especially helpful but the man selling the tickets at Cathedral Square and the drivers were all brilliant.

I bought the combo ticket which gave me both access to the hop on hop off tram and the Gondola in the city. The tram was a great way to see the main areas of the city and gave me ideas of places to visit. They leave every 15 minutes or so and a full circuit takes abour 50 minutes. The driver on each service tells you about the parts of the city that you are passing and all of them were very friendly. You can hop on and hop off where you like - the ticket lasts all day. I think the last tram is around 6pm.

Its a great way to explore the city. Kids are free which was a bonus for our family of four. Plenty of stops to jump on and off at and the tram stops regularly. We decided to still on the tram for one hoop then hopped off at the stops we wanted to explore more. The tram drivers were great at sharing stories and information about the city.

If you are planning on visiting Christchurch city itself, I would highly recommend taking the tram. It is hop on, hop off so you can visit several different areas without having to drive and find a place to park.
Plus, the commentary provided by the conductor will tell you what it is you are seeing. The whole loop takes only about 50 minutes. You can buy your tickets from the conductor on the tram or buy them ahead of time either on line or at the Christchurch attractions office near the Tramway cafe.

On busy days such as a weekend in early March, it takes a long time at every stop for people to disembark and new passengers to get on. This wouldn’t be too bad if the tram travelled a decent distance between stops, but it doesn’t, so you could walk faster than taking the tram. Of the 17 stops, half of them are just one block from the previous stop; one block had 3 stops on it. Not a single stop is more than 2 blocks away from the one before.
The commentary was not particularly informative as there was (reasonably) no commentary when passengers were getting on and off, and references were often made to places out of our field of vision so we couldn’t really be sure what place was being discussed.

There are several tram lines that run through the heart of Christchurch (even through a block of covered shops). The conductor sits in the front of the car and narrates as the tram passes many of the downtown highlights; discussing the impacts of the 2011 earthquake on the downtown buildings. The antique trams (1920s) are beautiful, with wood interiors and seats. At one point, the tram track dead ends and everything (including the seats) must reverse. The conductor unhooks the power cable, moves some driving components to the rear of the tram that now serves as the front of the tram. Quite an interesting setup!

You can sit back and listen to the driver tell you about the city's highlights as you meander along. A full circuit takes 50 minutes and there are 4 diffetent trams operating so you shouldn't have more than 15 minutes to wait. A very pleasant way to see the city.

We only had a few short hours to look around Christchurch before heading to the airport. This is a great way to see the city without having the hassle of finding a car parking space. Having the ability to hop on and off is a great benefit, as you see places like Regent Street where you would like to explore a bit more and some of the art works along the way need more time to view at leisure. The time between the trams is just right, which means you don't have to wait long before another one comes along for you to hop on. Drivers commentary was also very interesting.

We found the tourist tram the best way to traverse the city. We easily got our bearings of the city, and hopped on and off where we needed to go. The driver presented a descriptive narration of each area, highlight and building, as we tracked around the city. The trams themselves are historic dating back to the early 1900s; they have been lovingly maintained to perfection and give an old-age, real-life feel, to the whole experience.

Does the hop on- off bus stop near the Arctic Center, Air Force Museum and the wildlife reserve? Where is the nearest stop to the cruise ship port? Doy ou have a map of your stops?
Thank you
Written 9 October 2023
It does not stop at any of these places. The hop on hop off tram is only useful for the Central Business District area of Christchurch. Those locations that you mention are much further out from the City centre. But Christchurch has a really great bus system and interchange so I would suggest that you check out the bus route maps of Christchurch. WE used the buses for getting to the Gondola.

Will be arriving on a cruise ship. How do we get to the tram. We will have a 2 year old with us. Is there a cost for her age. do we have to book ahead. Thank you.
Written 23 September 2022
Pretty much any downtown drop point from the cruise ship will deliver you close to a tram stop I would imagine. Tickets can be purchased on the tram or from staff who may be at some of the larger stops. No bookings required. I think children of that age were free but not 100% certain.

Is there a special rate for The Gold Card and how many can be seated at one time
Written 1 March 2021
Capacity depends on the carriage you board, but I believe some can carry up to 48 passengers. I'd say the ones I was on would take around 20. As for the Gold Card, check the goldcard website, but they are currently showing 20% off Tramway fares until 31st March.

What are start and finish times of the tram please?
Written 20 March 2020
Pitch for 9am to 6pm and you will be right. It is subjected to specific company events. Just ask. Although in this climate, that will be pulled back. Regarding social isolation requirements, it may be pulled back.

Can you use an e ticket or do you have to print
Written 13 December 2018
Hi we just came back from NZ. I was going to buy an e ticket but was given the same advise so opted to pay on entry at any of the stops. No issues and easy to do. Parking - used the Botanic gardens car park , it's free and right opposite is a tram stop. Same with the Caterpillar tram in the Botanic gardens- can buy an e ticket or buy at any of the stops. Both are well worth the effort and great commentary. Good value & fully recommend the trips
