    Both fascinating and fun
This is a fascinating experience, covering all aspects of Antarctica, plus some fun things to do like the Storm Experience, the Field Trip, and Meet a husky. You can walk there from the airport and they will store luggage for you if you ask - we got off the plane, walked straight there and then caught the bus into town from round the corner afterwards. We had the General Admission and it was good value for money.

Very interesting museum! So glad we went!
We loved this museum! We learned so much about what kind of research different countries are doing down there. You get to experience what it is like to be in an arctic windstorm, which was really COOL! Also there is a board that shows all the different countries that have active research stations. Their 4D theatre was really fun to experience too. Highly recommend this museum!

A must do if in Christchurch NZ
This is the ultimate experience of what Antartica is like without actually going there. As senior Aussies we thoroughly enjoyed our time there, and could easily have stayed longer. The ride in the Hagglund, the snow storm experience, the fairy penguins, the husky dogs and our wonderful guide Lindsay added to our overall enjoyment. This is something that all ages would enjoy. One of the best experiences we had while in New Zealand.

The Center was very interesting. There was a lot to see. I really enjoyed the VIP Penguin session-got to see the penguins and learn more about them. Also loved the Husky dogs lounging around waiting for people to pet them. Highly recommend.

    Loved it
We loved our visit. Such a great place for adults and children, very interactive. Penguins are so cute, definitely recommend watching the feeding. We saw the Husky dogs, which was the high point of the visit. Can't wait to come back again

    Disappointing.
We did not enjoy this. The Haggland experience and snow storm were relatively well executed but the rest was dull and lacklustre. The 4D cinema was far from immersive and really very poor. Overall, we feel we wasted our money

The next best thing to visiting Antarctica
Who hasn’t been fascinated by Antarctica? When you’re in New Zealand you’re about as close to it as you can be. Our time in Christchurch included a visit to the Antarctic Center and it was well worth while. Very interesting exhibits, very immersive to give you a sense what life is like there for scientists and support staff. Located next to the airport, Christchurch is the departure airport for flights to and from the Antarctic. We even got to ride in the types of vehicles use for transportation in Antarctica and a nice surprise was seeing some Huskies. Great place to visit.

    Very cool experience 🙂
We loved our visit, especially seeing the blue penguins and experiencing the Hagglund course. Staff are very knowledgeable and helpful and the storm dome was really fun. We learned a lot and had a blast. Totally lives up to the recommendations online and word of mouth.

Very glad we went it was informative and fun.
We really enjoyed our visit to the International Antarctic Centre (IAC) and thought it was one of the best value for money things we did in New Zealand. The talk on the use of Husky dogs in the Antarctic by Scott was really interesting. The Haggalund ride over the obstacle course was fun (NB only for those over 1.2m tall and without back/neck injuries etc). The ice storm and 4D film also a bit of fun (and informative) as was the Ice hole Challenge. There is a small group of rescue blue penguins which can be viewed from above and from below water (through viewing glass). The IAC is literally accross the road from the airport and backed onto our airport hotel. It was a great way for us to spend 3 hours whilst killing time in the day for our evening flight. The main activities listed above are timed frequently during the day. There was a break though for the Huskies around lunchtime. You do not need to wear warm cothing to visit. They give you jackets with a hood and overshoes to experience the (c 5 minute?) Ice Storm but I would say long trousers would be better than shorts to avoid getting cold legs .

A great experience, a must do while in Christchurch.
This is an amazing experience. For someone that has been to the Antarctic it added to my knowledge. We had a backstage pass (recommended) so we found out lot's more about the Penguins at the Centre and the wonderful job they are doing, the guide was very passionate about her work. The Husky presentation was also first class and you get to pet them! The Blizzard experience, the Haglunds and the 4D theatre also fun. Add to that the many displays and information, it is all well worth the admission.

Fantastic place, completely let down by the cafe
Amazing place if you are interested in the Antarctic and polar exploration. Completely and utterly let down by the cafe run by teenagers. The food takes ages to come out, they forget your order and when you point out to them their food is too salty, they argue that is normal and that customers complain there isn’t enough salt, which I find hard to believe. When asked for a refund, they tried to argue that in their opinion the salt content is right. Team leader was rude and clearly inexperienced in dealing with customers and showed a complete lack of understanding of nutrition and how salt is unhealthy for kids, especially the copious amounts they put on their food.

    A unique tourist entertainment facility
As per the warnings, the ride in the Hagglund vehicle is bumpy and not for those were back problems or who are pregnant. The penguin feeding is somewhat underwhelming. There are seats for perhaps 20 people, but over 50 were crammed into the space. With waiting for the feeding to begin and observing the feeding, people were standing for about a half hour. This is problematic for seniors like me who have problems standing. Please consider installing more seating. There are lots of other smaller exhibits to view. If you find this review helpful, please give a like. You may also want to read my reviews of other tourist facilities in Christchurch, as well as in Auckland, Wellington and Brisbane, Australia.

    NEVER AGAIN
Grossly overpriced, over-hyped and over-crowded. Grandson was keen on seeing the penguins, especially after visiting the Oamaru colony. Turned out to be three inert birds barely visible in the far distance. We paid to go on the Hagglund. Told to go out and join the queue as one leaving in three minutes. We waited 30 minutes to reach the front of the queue and then told we had to wait because a group of about 30 tourists off a tour ship had arrived and were to be given special treatment. A further 20-minute wait. All people in queue were "not happy" at all. After the ride (just on 3.00pm) we went to the cafe and were told we were too late to buy food as they we closed. Only a few oddments in the counter available. If this is the way the tourism sector works it is very easy to see locals can't be bothered wasting money. Remember - a happy customer will tell a friend. A dissatisfied customer will tell a hundred friends.

Cinch up your belt and hold on, the Haaglund ride can be quite jarring; especially watch children’s heads on the interior vehicle walls. You can pet some retired Siberian Huskies outside of the entrance. The rescued penguin feeding was nice, but the staff had to repeatedly chastise kids disturbing the peace (where were their parents?). The 4-D Experience was a cheap ripoff of Disney ride. The Snow Dome windstorm wasn't worth the wait. The movie was about 15-minutes of disjoint spliced videos with no narration. Other exhibits were suitable for pre-teen children; bring some hand sanitizer to counteract all of the kids coughing and sneezing. I wouldn’t even recommend this place for a rainy day; despite the good work that they appear to be doing, it’s not worth the price of your admission.

Fantastic place to visit except the cafe

The cafe is disgraceful: they wanted to charge $5 for 100ml of cold milk for a toddler bottle. We would have eaten there after, didnt out of principal. Absoutely appaling even other patrons was like that isnt right!

It put down a great day down to to a bad experience.

Due to a technician creating an electrical fault there was a power cut during our visit. We were told by a lovely staff member that there would be a short delay to get things working again which was fine as they rescheduled the Hagglund ride to fill in time while we waited. We were also happy to watch the penguins for a while. However, after waiting over 50 minutes when I enquired if the 4D theatre was back online the lady at reception snapped back a incredibly short and rude reply. We were not offered a discount or refund nor kept informed on the continuing delay. I really feel that the $49 per adult ($98 for us two) was very pricy for the shortened experiences and rudeness. Had there been more communication and an offer of a refund it would have been a much happier experience.

A great place to visit for all ages. If you time it properly you can get to experience the Hagglund ride as well as the penguin feeding without too much of a wait. Our Hagglund ride was at 14:40 and the penguin feeding at 15:30 and we sandwiched the 4D theatre in between. One negative is that with limited visitors currently the cafe was only offering limited offerings so don't plan on getting a meal there!

We arrived just after 9am on a Friday, so it was pretty quiet. Enjoyed the displays, reading about Antarctic and its inhabitants. Briefly saw one of the husky dogs on a lead, walking through the entrance with a staff member, not quite what I expected. Enjoyed the 4D movie, and penguin feeding. The ride in the Hagglund was great. The Blizzard room was a very interesting experience too - minus 18 degrees C! Brr. The cafe was obviously not up to full speed as a result of closure over Lockdown. 2 hours well spent.

We arrived just in time for the morning feeding of the penguins. The custodian who was feeding them was very informative and amusing. She told us about the individual penguins and their personalities. She feed those who were happy to take fish from the water first before feeding those who were to nervous to do that. That included one little penguin who is scared of the water.

We have seen this place on prior visits to NZ but never had the time to visit. On the day we visited we had planned on doing something else but it was raining so as this was an indoor activity, we used that excuse to make the effort to visit.
We are so glad we did as the experience was fantastic. It started as soon as we entered the door as the discount for seniors was $NZ20 each which is the best discount we have ever received. This was followed by a ride in the Haggland around the specially designed track. Our driver was fantastic with not only providing valuable information about the vehicle, but did it with a sense of humour as well. The ride was not something we expected so it was an excellent start to our day.
After venturing inside we saw huskies, experienced a snow storm, fed the penguins and experience a 4D movie as well with simulations of being pooped on by seagulls. Excellent.
We were so glad it was raining as if it wasn't we probably would not have made the effort to go.
Well done to all staff and exhibiters.

Thank you for sharing your fantastic experience at the International Antarctic Centre! We're thrilled you decided to visit, especially on a rainy day. We had a wonderful day at the International Antarctic Center. Thought the admission price was very reasonable as it included all activities including the Hagglund ride, the penguin feeding, and two 4D movies, amongst other things.

We paid an extra $20 for the backstage penguin pass which was great value, and took us even closer to the penguins. Loved meeting the huskies too.

The static exhibitions were packed with information, and we were so interested by everything we saw that we were surprised how quickly the time went. Do allow as much time as you can.

All the staff were very helpful and friendly. We really couldn't recommend a visit highly enough.

Rating needs to go much higher than 50 as it is a unique experience like no other available in the world. To merge history, research and entertainment into one facility is well worth the ticket cost.
Enough variety to keep all ages engaged,

Kudos to the organiser!!

Get paper cups so you can take tea and coffee outside of the cafe. My only negative

I would definitely recommend this activity. The site is close to the airport. All of the parts are excellent from petting the huskies; the Antarctic storm experience (:-18C); the penguins; the 4D cinema; and the haggland drive over the 4WD course. I would suggest arriving early afternoon and finish with the penguin feeding at 15:30.
