About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- katejW8185YP0 contributionsGreat tour for sampling Waipara wines!Overall a great tour - got to try a really wide selection of wines, I’ve lost count of how many different wines there actually were! Tania was an excellent guide, lots of fun and gave us lots of information about the area. We originally booked on the tour without a lunch - which was then unavailable after we had booked, so not ideal but moved onto the tour with a lunch. Unfortunately, the lunch platter wasn’t really our thing so was disappointed that we had to pay more for something we didn’t actually want, just to be able to do the wine tour.Written 30 September 2024

- N9482HPjuditha0 contributionsFabulous wine tour!Fabulous wine tour! The driver/guide provided information on the drive to the first winery, Waipara Springs, where we tasted several wines, then had a great lunch. The wine pourer explained the wine processes and answered questions. We also visited George's Road and Torlesse. I was able to discuss the wines we tasted with the owner at George's Road who then offered to let us taste his syrah. Two of us found this one to be the best and we each bought a bottle. Torlesse produces wine in a more French style. All in all, a great day out meeting other wine lovers, and tasting a variety of wines and styles. I would definitely recommend!Written 16 June 2024

- Pathfinder5610440 contributionsA really enjoyable wine tasting experience. What a truly enjoyable day. We were collected from our hotel by our driver and tour guide Joseph. He is a Christchurch local he had a wonderful knowledge of Christchurch and surrounds and he made our tour so interesting and informative. We had a small group which was really great and in no time everyone was chatting like old friends. Our first winery ( where we had a very tasty lunch) was excellent. The second winery a little off the beaten track was interesting to see snd our third and last so welcoming and friendly and offered us so many different tastings. The whole tour took a little over 5 hours and we never felt rushed or pressured to move on. I would highly recommend this experience. Such an enjoyable day.Written 20 May 2024
- hrs3140 contributionsLoved our tour with Scotty. What a great way to see Christchurch, Mona Vale and the International Antarctic CentreLoved our tour with Scotty. What a great tour guide and driver. After leaving Lyttelton, travelled via the inner bays of Lyttelton Harbour to Governors Bay via Dyers Pass to the Sign of the Takahe. Hike for a few minutes to enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the City of Christchurch and the Southern Alps which are snowcapped for up to 9 months. The Scottish "castle" is so charming. Next stop was the Mona Vale Gardens which was renamed by Annie Quayle Townend after her mother's house in Tasmania. Annie inherited one million pounds as the sole surviving child in her family. This made her the richest independent woman in 1905. Mona Vale was originally called Karewa when it was built in 1899-1900. Townend added the gatehouse, more land and gardens and a Fernery to the property. Ferneries are quite popular in New Zealand. After her death, the property went through several owners including the Church of Latter Day Saints. When the church tried to sell the property to a private developer, there was a major public outcry. Community fundraising helped to turn the homestead into a beautiful public park and gardens open for all to enjoy. Our guide, Scotty dropped us off at the Fendalton Road gatehouse. So nice to able to walk along the Avon River enjoying the weeping willows and the agapanthus until we reached the rose garden. The rose garden is gorgeous. Love all the different varieties. Also interesting to visit the Fernery which seem to be quite popular in New Zealand. So many different varieties of huge ferns. Loved seeing the purple cardoon, artichoke thistle, and large yellow garden dahlias. Spent a couple of hours exploring Christchurch which is still recovering from a devastating earthquake in 2011. Amazing to see how the city is rebuilding historic landmarks and adding green spaces. Want to explore Antarctica without actually stepping foot on the continent? Visit the International Antarctic Centre to get an overview of what happens on the frozen land. So easy to get to the International Antarctic Centre with our guide Scotty. Booked a great tour of Christchurch and the International Antarctic Centre from the Shore Excursions Group. Adorable Little Blue Fairy Penguins. Hagglund Field Trip. A blizzard in the Storm Dome....and the cutest huskies! Started with a very bumpy ride on the Hagglund Field Trip. Sit back, buckle up and hold on. Get an idea of what scientists experience on the all-terrain amphibious vehicles designed to explore the icy crevasses on Antarctica. Up, down, over and through. The little blue fairy penguins are so cute! Since they usually are out hunting fish during the day, they are hard to find in the wild until they come back in a parade at night. So nice to be able to see the family of tiny penguins that are native to New Zealand who have been rescued due to physical ailments or injuries. Adorable! Brrrrrrrrr..... Feel the chill of an Antarctic Storm up close and personal. Bundle up in a long coat, put on shoe covers and enter the Storm Dome. Every hour, an Antarctic Storm drops the temperature from minus 8 degrees Celsius to minus 18. Amazed at how well the coats provided keep you comfortable. But still, so cold! Explore Antarctica in the galleries. Watch the 4D movie. The 360 gallery had such beautiful images of the continent, penguins and whales. Loved learning about the research that happens with international cooperation and how the scientists prepare to live in Antarctica. Huskies!! Who can resist playing with huskies? So cute and so friendly. My parents especially loved this part. A great way to end the day at the International Antarctic Centre. Support the center with a purchase in the gift shop. They had a sale on two tea towels for $2 NZD. We also grabbed some magnets and beanies for friends and family back home. On the return to Lyttleton, Scotty drove by the estuary and the beach suburb via Evans Pass which was closed for more than 7 years following the Christchurch earthquake of 2011 due to cliff collapse. Imagine the devastation, but nice to see how the community has banded together to help each other.Written 24 April 2024

- DarDiner0 contributionsCould have been better.Overall good but it was obvious that the tour guide had little knowledge of the wine region and had not even tried any of the 3 vineyards wine. One of the cellar doors (Georges Road) was great with wine that showed the skills of the winemaker. My wife and I thought the other 2 were really average. The other participants made for good company. My advice to the operator of the tours is, employ people who know the product and region to make the day more enjoyable and informative.Written 17 April 2024
- SGero670 contributionsGood tour for cruise ship visitors if your time is limited.🚢Picked up directly from where the cruise ship transfer point in Lyttelton. Good overview of Christchurch if your time is limited. The Antarctic Centre was the highlight thanks to our guide Karen with the bonus of seeing the new Husky Puppy, Thanks also to Andrew for making the tour very enjoyable and informative. 🙂Written 12 April 2024

We paid $240NZ each for this excursion. The entire journey from Christchurch and back by mini bus was cramped and uncomfortable. The driver was not communicative and failed to mention that the best attraction in Akaroa is the very informative museum. The visit to the cheese factory was a waste of time. We saw a worker engaged in the manufacturing process but nobody told us what he was actually doing although we were given the opportunity of trying a few samples; however we might as well have been visting the local Countdown. By contrast the boat trip was excellent but upon checking the operator's website we found that the cost per person was $95NZ. While that was very reasonable it meant that Leisure Tours was effectively charging us $145NZ each for the remainder of the trip. I will leave it to others to decide whether that represents good value but for me it was a rip-off. Five stars for the boat trip but one for Leisure Tours.

Unfortunately the reviewer does not provide a date of travel or a drivers name and we have searched back over the past four months and can find no one by the name Richard E travelling with us. Furthermore we do not operate this tour in mini buses. In the circumstances we have reported this review to TripAdvisor. Everyone can see from all the reviews for this tour that this tour is not consistent with the other reviews we have received for the same tour,

Really enjoyable day out despite being a very rainy day. Easy pick up from our hotel, comfortable seats on smallish tour bus, ( I would guess maximum of 14 seats), although if you are above medium height the back seats are not ideal as your view will be obstructed. The guide, Scotty, was informative, interesting and interested, he managed to sound as if he was enthusiastic about what he was seeing despite I would guess having done the same trip dozens of times before. Plenty of stops on the route for toilet breaks, photo opportunities, grab a coffee or just stretch your legs. Nice to visit the cheese factory at Barry Bay and sample their wares.
Akaroa is a smallish town but worth spending an hour or so wandering around the shops and galleries, the old power station is worth a visit. Lunch was fairly simple with 3 choices of main course, 2 fish and one chicken. Harbour tour really enjoyable, didn’t see any dolphins but saw penguins and seals. Enjoyable way to spend 2 hours.
The tour is not cheap but was good value overall and I would certainly recommend it. I am sure all the guides are good but certainly a special thanks to Scotty who added to our knowledge and enjoyment.
Dropped off back at our hotel at 5.30.

We had an AWESOME day with Tania! Pick-up from hotel was on time she entertained us with local knowledge, stories and her version of jokes as we picked up additional people in Christchurch and the cruise ship at Littleton Harbour. It is a long and winding road to Akaroa. There was a rest break at Little River to stretch your legs before reaching Akaroa an hour later. Boarded the dolphin watching tour at 10:30. We did see dolphins, seals and one penguin, had the included lunch at BullyHayes", both the salmon and fish and chips were delish. At 2:30 boarded the van for the trip back to Christchurch with brief stops at the Barry Bay Cheese Factory. No demonstration as it was Saturday, but shop was open. Cheeses are nice. Second stop was at hilltop to photo stop with view of Akoroa and the bay. Last stop was to drop cruise ship passengers off, then a return trip via New Brighton before being dropped off at hotel. Drop cellphone in van on way out, Tania was back at the hotel returning it before I even missed it. A very big THANK YOU to Tania as it would have been a trip spoiler.

Akaroa is a beautiful place visit, everything is so pretty there, the houses, land scapes, plants, trees, shops and cafes etc. we had a best salmon dish there as part of the tour in Bully Hayes restaurant, the coffee is nice in one of the cafe. Since we couldn’t go on boat trip due to the weather I got half money refund. On the way back we stopped at some scenic locations. It’s worth a trip, thank you

We booked this day trip as a quick turnaround after our Adventure Park zip line tour was suddenly canceled (due to wild fires), so didn’t have much time to research. Our driver, Andrew, picked us up directly from our hotel in an air conditioned small bus. Had a total of 10 passengers, and Andrew provided commentary with a headset/microphone for the passengers. We quickly squirted up the mountainside, and at first we thought we were missing out on some photo ops, as he seemed determined to stick to a schedule, but ultimately we had other opportunities to get some great shots. We made it up to Akaroa, which is quite the scenic little town, and we had lunch arranged at a place called Bully Hayes—good food generally. Then we had an afternoon cruised arranged on Black Cat dolphin watching tours for about 2.5 hours in the afternoon. The weather was quite nice (for the area), with blue skies, temps in the mid-20’s, and we definitely saw some Hector’s dolphins, a variety of seabirds, some fur seals, and someone (not us) spotted a white flippered penguin. The boat slipped outside the bay into the ocean, and the captain took us to some volcanic points of interest, since the Akaroa area is essentially a volcanic caldera. After the tour, Andrew gathered us up and got us back down to Christchurch, stopping at Barry Bay’s cheese shop for a quick sampling. The cheese shop has a number of different items for sale, including some wine and other snacks.
Everyone—something we’ve noticed—was very nice compared to visiting locations in the USA. There’s a general warmth here (and Australia) that evades service industry people in the states.
Overall—a nice trip, good people, good food, great photo ops.

We live along a vibrant coast so I'm a bit jaded on beach towns so this place did not meet my expectations and we did not enjoy our lunch choices at Bully Hayes. The restaurant was not busy and yet they crammed 5 of us into a table for 4 making it difficult to place beverages, elbows, etc. The boat out to the marine reserve was good, you cannot see the penguins, don't plan on it. I'm seen enough fur seals to last my life, but we were fortunate to have an abundance of playful Hector dolphins hang around the boat. Before arriving in town, we stopped at a beautiful viewpoint. Afterward, we stopped at a cheese place. Seriously, you should drop that from the tour, it is ridiculous and not worthy of being called a tasting. Waste of time. I wouldn't do this trip again...too much time and money for the result.

Thank you for taking the time to submit your review.
Although we are unable to ascertain the date travelled we have spoken to the restaurant regarding the lunch settings to ensure our customers are not too squashed. As we are sure you are aware everyone's expectations, views and opinions differ and that is what makes us individuals. Having received 100's of reviews on various platforms for this day tour to Akaroa it is clear that the majority of our clients are not in agreement with your sentiments regarding the township, the nature cruise of the lunch. For anyone reading this review and subsequent reply we would invite you to also read all of the other wonderful reviews of this day tour.

We thoroughly enjoyed the day trip to Akaroa and harbour cruise.
Our driver/guide Scotty is a legend, very knowledgeable on the history
and background, giving us an insight to how this part of NZ was settled.
Akaroa itself is a charming place, the lunch was a chance to catch up wth fellow travellers and hear of their experiences.
On the harbour cruise we saw dolphins, babyseals and a humpback made a brief appearance... this was the first sighting of the season, so a big point score for the skipper and crew.
Picked up some chutneys, cheese and chocs at the factory before heading back to town
Thanks to all for a very enjoyable day out..

Appreciate the help from our tour guide, Scotty, for giving us an excellent, informative, and leisurely (as the name of the company suggests) tour to Akaroa. He took us through the scenic route, and seemed to know all the right spots to take those perfect photos and admire the great views. The harbour cruise were all also taken care of, so we effectively had no worries while strolling around the historic town. We were also lucky enough to see a few dolphins and seals hanging around their natural habitat while out on the cruise, not to mention getting more amazing views of the cliffs and hills from up close. The tour van itself was clean, comfortable, and in good condition, apart from the AC which didn’t seem to fully cooperate at that time. But it gave us all the more reason to enjoy the fresh cool natural New Zealand air. My only suggestion for improvement would be to include complimentary snacks and drinks, as the other tours I had been on provided these. Otherwise, I believe that you can be confident that you’ll have a good experience with this tour.

Superb tour!
Picked up from hotel by tour guide Rodney who provided wonderful detailed description of all the principal points of interest on Arakoa Peninsula, and lots of photo stops. After reaching pretty town or Akaroa plenty time for coffee/lunch or shopping before the Black Cat Cruise. Not so much a harbour cruise which under sells the experience but estuary cruises with sightings of many Hectors dolphins, blue penguins and fur seals. Excellent commentary by captain

Thanks for the great review! I'm really glad you enjoyed your Akaroa Day Tour from Christchurch. Akaroa is a beautiful place to visit and the harbour itself is really stunning and hosts many of our native marine animals including Hector's Dolphins, New Zealand Fur Seals and Little Blue Penguins. It's also great that your trip was made all the more better thanks to your driver/guide, Rodney. I'll be sure to pass on your kind words to him. As for your comments regarding the title "Harbour Cruise", it has been noted and we may look into using the official and much more aptly named "Nature Cruise"!
Thanks again and I hope you return to Christchurch and Akaroa soon!

Akoroa is beautiful and the drive very scenic. The visit to the cheese factory was a waste of time as no information was provided by the guide outlining its history/significance to the region nor was there a rep in the shop to talk about what was happening. Unfortunately the rest of the road trip was similar, ie no detail or history shared. We were dropped off and then back on the bus. By contrast the boat trip was excellent and that guide was extremely well informed.

Two questions: As sold thru trip advisor this tour states a maximum group of 15 people, but tour company's page says 40 people. Please confirm which is correct. Second, is the lunch option a set selection?
Thanks. This sounds very exciting, just want to be sure what is going to happen
