Cooperative weather and a very nice sea-side day
We did a day trip to Akaroa with sea kayaking. Stu was our guide and he was excellent. Weather looked questionable but ended up breaking in our favor - he had a solid plan B ready in the event the weather didn’t cooperate. He gave us a lot of interesting information about Christchurch and the surrounding area on the way to and from Akaroa. He also did a great job making sure we got connected with the kayak provider. Lunch was great, and we made a few very nice stops during the day as our schedule provided. We would definitely book with them again if we returned to Christchurch. Thank you, Stu!

Such varied and beautiful scenery between Christchurch and Queenstown
TIm was our guide over the course of 3 days. He was the best! On Day 1 we visited Akaroa where we took a dolphin cruise and saw a number of Hector's dolphin and some seals, too. After lunch we toured The Giants House, a whimsical garden filled with charmingly eccentric sculptures. On Day 2 we stopped in Fairlie/Burkes Pass to experience a touch of America's Rt 66, Lake Tekapo, and ended our day at Aoraki/Mount Cook. On Day 3 we hiked the Hooker Valley Track, through beautiful scenery in Ahuriri Ward and eded our day in Queenstown. Tim was a wonderful person to spend 3 days with; his conversation make the miles (kilometers) fly by, and yet we had plenty of time to pause, take pictures and enjoy the scenery. I wish I could add more photos, but Trip Advisor's app will not accept 6 other jpegs because of "invalid" format.

Kaikoura whale watch day trip - amazing
We had an absolutely amazing time on the whale watching excursion. The entire day was made magical by our tour guide Mandy. She had driven us from Queenstown the day prior and was truly a joy to spend time with. Mandy was knowledgeable and personable. She also made sure to tailor every stop to our taste. 10/10 recommend the tour and 12/10 recommend Mandy.

        An adventure you can’t miss!
We had a small group tour to Dolphin Watch and I cannot express how amazing this activity was for my family! Steve our guide was unbelievable! He was funny, insightful and full of knowledge! We spent the day being shown the best of the plains with a cheese stop, spectacular views and lunch! 10 stars!

        Exceptional Christchurch touring
This was a really great experience! Our guide, Tia, was knowledgeable, personable and professional. We thoroughly enjoyed her company throughout the better part of a day. Her personal connection with the wineries made for a special experience as well. Another special aspect of the tour was Tia's personal recollections and commentary on the rebuilding of Christchurch.

        Akaroa and Banks Pennisula highlights
Dave, our tour driver was excellent. Ended up just being my husband and me. Learned much about the history and wildlife of the area. Lunch was delightful. The dolphin swim was cancelled, due to high waves. Dave arranged for the Eco Cruise boat trip instead. Cruise was wonderful, saw many dolphins, sea lions, penguins. He also helped find shops that fit our interests. On the way back, he took us to a hill where we had a wonderful view of Christchurch and vicinity.

Two days across New Zealand with best guide ever.
On a 3 week trip to both New Zealand Islands we had the good fortune to be booked into a Canterbury Trails tour from Queenstown to Christchurch via Mt. Cook. Cantebury Trials provided a safe and comfortable van with an interesting itinerary. Our guide was Hugo Flaus. We had many guides in our NZ time but Hugo Flaus set the standard for informed, flexible, personable, with an instinct for what we might enjoy beyond then providing it. Yes, Arrowtown was an interesting way to begin but he knew the very scenic "back way" to get us to Cardrona Hotel for lunch. He knew the dairy farmer who would welcome an impromptu visit for milking time. He easily explained any question we had ranging from milk versus wool exports, possum fur collection for Merino wool, to Maori history and flat white coffees. Hugo Flaus, as guide for Canterbury Trails tours, made this an extraordinary two days on the road across New Zealand's South Island's fine valleys/lakes/mountains/and agricultural planes.

        Canterbury Countryside to Mt Cook.
This was a spectacular trip. Sue was our guide and her local knowledge gave great color commentary to the trip in addition to her local knowledge of the perfect places to stop for short visits. Our desire for this trip of a lifetime to New Zealand was to see New Zealand and with the tours by Canterbury Trails we most certainly did. Very enjoyable and a comfortable ride.

        Great tour, extraordinary guide.
This trip was wonderful, but the factor that made it extraordinary was our guide, Hugo. We had many guides in NZ, who ranged from tolerable to great, but Hugo was in a class by himself. He is warm, interested, responsive, and deeply informed about everything. We saw and learned things we never would have without his quick intelligence and love for what he was showing us. We would have booked him for a multi-week tour if we could. Do yourself a favor and ask for him by name.

        Christchurch and wine.
What a wonderful day out. Sue took us to the highest point above the city for far reaching views surrounding the area. We drove on with great explanations of the cities history and viewpoints. We next visited two lovely small vineyards in the region. We had some delicious wines at both. At St. Georges we had lunch too, a cheeseboard with delicious bread and pickles. Felt very relaxed. Thank you to Sue for the excellent company, we felt we had known her for years.

Once in a lifetime outstanding experience
Canterbury Trails tour guide Dave Sandford was with us for most of our time in the South Island. He was extremely personable and knowledgeable, and this added to our total New Zealand experience. Dave is a fantastic tour guide. His knowledge base is very large. One day, our plans had to be aborted due to bad weather and he quickly and easily found another option that made for a most enjoyable day. He was also able to adjust the day’s “rougher” activities to meet our strengths and limitations.

We went to several wonderful wineries. Tia was a wonderful guide. She had a lot of knowledge of Christchurch, itself, but also took us to some great places to taste wine. One of our favorites was Terrace Edge.

Fantastic day with Dave! He promptly picked us up at the hotel and provided a great narrative of Christchurch on the way to the train station. The train ride to Arthur's Pass was comfortable, informative and educational. Dave picked us up in Arthur's Pass and took us to lunch. We later went on several remarkable hikes. A great day with Dave!!

Great tour, excellent quick response communications with Irene in the office, and Stu was one of the best tour guides we've ever had. He was early for pickup, got all passengers introduced and comfortable throughout the tour and provided knowledgeable commentary throughout the tour. He removed stress by keeping us informed on what was going to happen with the trip logistics and especially by picking up the train tickets at the station and staying with us until settled on to he train, then eas there to welcome us in the platform when the train arrived at Arthur's Pass. The lunch choice was very good and as well viewpoints visited on the return trip. A great experience overall.

Our tour guide Mandy went above and beyond to make our tour amazing. We encountered a crazy snow storm, that was unseasonable, on the way up the mountain while on the train. Mandy was waiting for us at the pass ... and safely escorted us to the comfy van and took every precaution to not only get us down the mountain safely but to make my entire family happy. Roads were closing as we were making our way down the mountain and she drove like a champ. While we didn’t get to do the tour the way we had planned (due to the crazy weather) she planned out a gorgeous day in Christchurch. We had an amazing time exploring the city. She made sure each member of the family experienced something special. The van was tidy and comfortable. The service was beyond amazing and it was the highlight of our trip to the South Island.

This trip was made memorable by our host who handled everything with a good natured confident expertise. Knowledgeable and courteous, our driver ensured we did not feel rushed and answered all questions with the ease of a native Newzealander. We enjoyed an excellent lunch that was only surpassed by the superb weather today. Castle Rock was a highlight along with the hiking trails. Stuart provided all the relevant information along the way as well as some helpful tips on driving for when we venture out on our own. This was the perfect start to our NZ adventure. Nice work, Goway!

We were really looking forward to riding the TranzAlpine train and were originally going to book a roundtrip on the train until we found this combo Arthur's Pass tour with the train one way and bus one way. We booked and paid in full for our tour, then was told 23 days before the tour date that the train tickets had, in fact, never been purchased and were sold out.

I had expected that the train tickets had already been purchased or were purchased shortly after we made our booking. We had never been informed that the tickets had not been purchased, not until they finally sent a message 23 days before our tour, 5 months after our original booking. We were offered the roundtrip bus tour to Arthur's Pass as an alternative, but that defeated the primary purpose of the tour for us. I understand that tours get cancelled because of unforeseen circumstances, but this was not unforeseen. They never had the tickets in the first place. Frankly, I find this practice dishonest and unfair to customers, as I would have preferred some honesty sooner so that alternative arrangements could be made. I could have purchased the train tickets myself when I saw that they became available a couple weeks after booking this tour. Lesson learned.

The day started off right on time, with David, our guide, picking us up at our hotel. After a quick orientation, we were off to the train station, where he ensured that we were set on the train, and ready to connect with him at Arthur’s pass.

We enjoyed our train ride through the beautiful terrain, and when we arrived at our stop, David was literally right at the door, waiting for us. After collecting us, he took us on a tour of some beautiful vistas with plenty of information about the history, geology, and other interesting facts pertaining to our location.

We then had a beautiful (steep!) hike to Devil’s Punchbowl Falls. This was absolutely gorgeous and a great reward for all those steps!

Then, a well-deserved and delicious lunch at the Bealey Hotel. Thus restored, we started downhill.

Next stop was a really cool hike through a limestone – strewn field. This was an amazing natural feature, though we did have some concern about a possible Orc raid, since the terrain was quite similar to nearby locations used during the filming of the final Lord of the Rings film. Fortunately we were not bothered by Orcs or other supernatural beings. (However, one of the rocks did look a little bit like Abraham Lincoln‘s face!)

On our way back, we learned more about the local features, shared a few more surprises, and overall had a really great day. David is a fantastic, informative guide, and safe driver. He clearly went out of his way to make sure that the four of us on this trip had an outstanding experience! We would totally do this again.

Collected by Dave our tour guide on time we were transported to the station in a 7 seater to ride the train to Arthurs Pass. My wife and I shared the tour with 3 others who were also travelling around NZ , so good to share experiences. Dave was very pleasant and knowledgeable. He collected us from the station when we arrived at Arthurs Pass and showed us a number of places of interest in the national park which included some walking up hill - easy for someone reasonably fit. I thought he answered all questions comprehensibly. I found the walk around the limestone boulders very interesting. The views from the train and during the walks are stunning.
I thouroughly recommend this tour to anyone interested in scenery, geology and the wildlife of NZ. The lunch at the cafe in Arthurs pass was OK if you choose the Quesquedillas! I have not submitted any photos because they cannot do justice to what you will see. You must go yourself to appreciate the experience.

Took The half-day train ride up to Arthur’s Pass. Major problem with the sound system on the train. Staff was able to help my wife but not me.

Met by Peter at the Arthur’s pass station. Took three hikes had a great time, wonderful views and Peter was full of explanations of most of what we saw. Had lunch at a wonderful little restaurant.

Peter, our tour guide, was the best that we have had so far in 15 days in New Zealand. Extremely outgoing, he made sure that all of us got to do what we wanted. Also very knowledgeable and went out of his way to make sure that we had a great time. If you can ask for him, do so.It is clearly worth the effort.

Make no mistake NZ is stunning! This tour, however, was marred by an uncomfortable van trip... and you're in the van a LONG time.

The TranzAlpine Train trip to Arthur's Pass was incredibly beautiful. The scenery along the way was striking and the short trek at Arthur's Pass was delightful.

However, when boarding the van at pickup (we were the last to enter) we found that instead of the 'small group tour, max 8', it was a VERY FULL van. I was shocked as I had expected a maximum of 8 passengers but there were 10 of us on board plus the driver. Now a 12 seater van is designed for 12 people of average size and there were a few onboard (like myself) who were larger than average. Hubby is well over 6ft and I'm just under 6ft. We sat with our legs around our ears for most of the drive and it was terribly uncomfortable.

The driver was fantastic... very knowledgable, thoroughly pleasant, and a good driver to boot. However, being stacked in like sardines really spoilt the day. She apologised several times, saying that they don't normally have so many on the tour. We knew it wasn't her fault so we didn't address our concerns to her.

I emailed the company about this issue but it took three separate points of contact before I finally received a response. And that response was 'well the operator said it was comfortable enough so that's it'. My point is, if your advertising says Max 8 persons, you can't just stack another couple in there to make more money!

The Train Trip was lovely but I'd recommend taking it all the way to Greymouth. If you want to visit Arthur's Pass, rent a car and take a day trip. You'll save money and be much more comfortable!

We got lucky with good weather and a great guide, Peter! He just made the entire experience so much better with his cheerful commentary and fun facts. The train journey is a must do as the landscape views are a treat to the eye. We took the train to Arthur's Pass and Peter took us on a short, guided hike through woods and to a river (it felt like being in a Lord of the Rings movie). The day was getting hotter but on the way back, post lunch, we stopped at these limestone cliffs and Peter had a picnic basket with tea and brownies for us. Excellent day trip on all fronts.

Thank you for your great review and your comments regarding Peter. Arthurs Pass is just one of those great days out and while we can't promise a sighting of a Hobbit the walks we take are just the sort of places that they would love.
