It was an excellent way to spend our last day on the South Island after driving around the island for 15 days. Mandy, our guide picked us up promptly at 7:20am as promised. From there she dropped us off at the train station for the 2 1/2 hr train ride up to the Arthur’s pass stop.
It was a clear, cool day and the views are breathtaking. The train is clean and the seats are very comfortable. Seats are assigned and Canterbury Trails made it a point to put us in the passenger car directly behind the observation car. Very strategic when it came time for taking pics when the conductor instructed everyone to get there for the some unforgettable views of the area because it’s rather small and it was very crowded.
At the stop Mandy met us after driving 2 1/2 hrs from CC. She showed us great views of the area and took us to 3 great hikes. She obviously knew the area well. The tour also included lunch at a mom and pop shop and the food was delicious.
I would highly recommend Canterbury Trails company and specifically Mandy for giving our family of 8 a great memory of our visit to NZ.

We were picked up at our hotel by our tour director Graham, and taken in a comfortable shuttle bus, to Springfield where we caught the TranzAlpine Train to Arthur's Pass, journeyed from there to the Otira Gorge, lunched at our own expense then traveled on througn the beautiful Southern Alps. On our return journey to Christchurch we stopped at the Waimakariri River for 45 minutes so that one of our 7 fellow passengers could go on the optional jet boat ride. Following the jet boating we visited a sheep farm where we enjoyed an up close and personal sheep shearing and mustering demonstration and then were served afternoon tea. We thoroughly enjoyed this tour and would highly recommend it. The TranzAlpine train ride is awesome as are the scenery and activities coming and going. Graham our driver and tour guide for the day was so knowledgable and thorough in providing great information along the way. He made each area come alive and gave us a glimpses of history that provided a great understanding of the areas we travelled through. Also, our group of 7 international travelers bonded almost immediately adding to the overall enjoyment of the day. While we enjoyed visiting among ourselves during the 45 minute wait for the jet boater, there was nothing of interest at this site for the rest of us and we could have done without this stop.

This all-day combined train and land experience through and around Arthur's Pass was exceptional. Our small group (5) guide Dave from Canterbury Trails was superb. He was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. After the dramatic train ride from Christchurch into the mountains, Dave led us to see Kea birds, hiking through forests, and climbing around Castle Hill rock formations, with lunch along the way. This day was one of the highlights of our New Zealand holiday.

Our tour guide Mandy went above and beyond to make our tour amazing. We encountered a crazy snow storm, that was unseasonable, on the way up the mountain while on the train. Mandy was waiting for us at the pass ... and safely escorted us to the comfy van and took every precaution to not only get us down the mountain safely but to make my entire family happy. Roads were closing as we were making our way down the mountain and she drove like a champ. While we didn’t get to do the tour the way we had planned (due to the crazy weather) she planned out a gorgeous day in Christchurch. We had an amazing time exploring the city. She made sure each member of the family experienced something special. The van was tidy and comfortable. The service was beyond amazing and it was the highlight of our trip to the South Island.

Fantastic day with Dave! He promptly picked us up at the hotel and provided a great narrative of Christchurch on the way to the train station. The train ride to Arthur's Pass was comfortable, informative and educational. Dave picked us up in Arthur's Pass and took us to lunch. We later went on several remarkable hikes. A great day with Dave!!

This trip was made memorable by our host who handled everything with a good natured confident expertise. Knowledgeable and courteous, our driver ensured we did not feel rushed and answered all questions with the ease of a native Newzealander. We enjoyed an excellent lunch that was only surpassed by the superb weather today. Castle Rock was a highlight along with the hiking trails. Stuart provided all the relevant information along the way as well as some helpful tips on driving for when we venture out on our own. This was the perfect start to our NZ adventure. Nice work, Goway!

The day started off right on time, with David, our guide, picking us up at our hotel. After a quick orientation, we were off to the train station, where he ensured that we were set on the train, and ready to connect with him at Arthur’s pass.

We enjoyed our train ride through the beautiful terrain, and when we arrived at our stop, David was literally right at the door, waiting for us. After collecting us, he took us on a tour of some beautiful vistas with plenty of information about the history, geology, and other interesting facts pertaining to our location.

We then had a beautiful (steep!) hike to Devil’s Punchbowl Falls. This was absolutely gorgeous and a great reward for all those steps!

Then, a well-deserved and delicious lunch at the Bealey Hotel. Thus restored, we started downhill.

Next stop was a really cool hike through a limestone – strewn field. This was an amazing natural feature, though we did have some concern about a possible Orc raid, since the terrain was quite similar to nearby locations used during the filming of the final Lord of the Rings film. Fortunately we were not bothered by Orcs or other supernatural beings. (However, one of the rocks did look a little bit like Abraham Lincoln‘s face!)

On our way back, we learned more about the local features, shared a few more surprises, and overall had a really great day. David is a fantastic, informative guide, and safe driver. He clearly went out of his way to make sure that the four of us on this trip had an outstanding experience! We would totally do this again.

Took The half-day train ride up to Arthur’s Pass. Major problem with the sound system on the train. Staff was able to help my wife but not me.

Met by Peter at the Arthur’s pass station. Took three hikes had a great time, wonderful views and Peter was full of explanations of most of what we saw. Had lunch at a wonderful little restaurant.

Peter, our tour guide, was the best that we have had so far in 15 days in New Zealand. Extremely outgoing, he made sure that all of us got to do what we wanted. Also very knowledgeable and went out of his way to make sure that we had a great time. If you can ask for him, do so.It is clearly worth the effort.

Had a spectacular day with a spectacular guide! Tia picked us up at our hotel, settled us on the train, and promised to meet us at Arthur’s Pass. We saw amazing scenery in a comfortable train coach. Lovely 2.5 hour ride. The rest of the day was just as enjoyable as we stopped to see some iconic NZ sights, had too much lunch (included), and made our way back to Christchurch. Having Tia as a guide is like having your own naturalist/historian to educate you. We learned so much about New Zealand and its people on this beautiful, sunny day. Highlight of our vacation, for sure!

We did the Arthur's pass tour on Jan 1st. Luckily we were the only group on the first day of new year! The tour started with a 2.5 hour train ride to Arthur. The train was clean. Along the way, you get to see beautiful landscape. Dave was our tour guide. He was very knowledgeable about the area and tried to show us every aspect of Arthur's point. He was also very attentive and made sure we are well taken care of. Dave dropped us at the train station in Christchurch and was already waiting at the Arthur's pass station when we got there. The lunch was also fantastic. We really enjoyed the burger! The tour ended with us feeding some sheep at one of Dave's friends' farm. What a pleasant surprise!!! Thank you Dave for an amazing tour. This was such a great start of 2020!
