A really enjoyable wine tasting experience.
What a truly enjoyable day. We were collected from our hotel by our driver and tour guide Joseph. He is a Christchurch local he had a wonderful knowledge of Christchurch and surrounds and he made our tour so interesting and informative. We had a small group which was really great and in no time everyone was chatting like old friends. Our first winery ( where we had a very tasty lunch) was excellent. The second winery a little off the beaten track was interesting to see snd our third and last so welcoming and friendly and offered us so many different tastings. The whole tour took a little over 5 hours and we never felt rushed or pressured to move on. I would highly recommend this experience. Such an enjoyable day.

        Akaroa Day Trip
We thoroughly enjoyed the day trip to Akaroa and harbour cruise. Our driver/guide Scotty is a legend, very knowledgeable on the history and background, giving us an insight to how this part of NZ was settled. Akaroa itself is a charming place, the lunch was a chance to catch up wth fellow travellers and hear of their experiences. On the harbour cruise we saw dolphins, babyseals and a humpback made a brief appearance... this was the first sighting of the season, so a big point score for the skipper and crew. Picked up some chutneys, cheese and chocs at the factory before heading back to town Thanks to all for a very enjoyable day out.. Barbara M

Very nice tour operator, Akaroa town blah, Hector dolphins on bay good
We live along a vibrant coast so I'm a bit jaded on beach towns so this place did not meet my expectations and we did not enjoy our lunch choices at Bully Hayes. The restaurant was not busy and yet they crammed 5 of us into a table for 4 making it difficult to place beverages, elbows, etc. The boat out to the marine reserve was good, you cannot see the penguins, don't plan on it. I'm seen enough fur seals to last my life, but we were fortunate to have an abundance of playful Hector dolphins hang around the boat. Before arriving in town, we stopped at a beautiful viewpoint. Afterward, we stopped at a cheese place. Seriously, you should drop that from the tour, it is ridiculous and not worthy of being called a tasting. Waste of time. I wouldn't do this trip again...too much time and money for the result.

Loved our tour with Scotty. What a great way to see Christchurch, Mona Vale and the International Antarctic Centre
Loved our tour with Scotty. What a great tour guide and driver. After leaving Lyttelton, travelled via the inner bays of Lyttelton Harbour to Governors Bay via Dyers Pass to the Sign of the Takahe. Hike for a few minutes to enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the City of Christchurch and the Southern Alps which are snowcapped for up to 9 months. The Scottish "castle" is so charming. Next stop was the Mona Vale Gardens which was renamed by Annie Quayle Townend after her mother's house in Tasmania. Annie inherited one million pounds as the sole surviving child in her family. This made her the richest independent woman in 1905. Mona Vale was originally called Karewa when it was built in 1899-1900. Townend added the gatehouse, more land and gardens and a Fernery to the property. Ferneries are quite popular in New Zealand. After her death, the property went through several owners including the Church of Latter Day Saints. When the church tried to sell the property to a private developer, there was a major public outcry. Community fundraising helped to turn the homestead into a beautiful public park and gardens open for all to enjoy. Our guide, Scotty dropped us off at the Fendalton Road gatehouse. So nice to able to walk along the Avon River enjoying the weeping willows and the agapanthus until we reached the rose garden. The rose garden is gorgeous. Love all the different varieties. Also interesting to visit the Fernery which seem to be quite popular in New Zealand. So many different varieties of huge ferns. Loved seeing the purple cardoon, artichoke thistle, and large yellow garden dahlias. Spent a couple of hours exploring Christchurch which is still recovering from a devastating earthquake in 2011. Amazing to see how the city is rebuilding historic landmarks and adding green spaces. Want to explore Antarctica without actually stepping foot on the continent? Visit the International Antarctic Centre to get an overview of what happens on the frozen land. So easy to get to the International Antarctic Centre with our guide Scotty. Booked a great tour of Christchurch and the International Antarctic Centre from the Shore Excursions Group. Adorable Little Blue Fairy Penguins. Hagglund Field Trip. A blizzard in the Storm Dome....and the cutest huskies! Started with a very bumpy ride on the Hagglund Field Trip. Sit back, buckle up and hold on. Get an idea of what scientists experience on the all-terrain amphibious vehicles designed to explore the icy crevasses on Antarctica. Up, down, over and through. The little blue fairy penguins are so cute! Since they usually are out hunting fish during the day, they are hard to find in the wild until they come back in a parade at night. So nice to be able to see the family of tiny penguins that are native to New Zealand who have been rescued due to physical ailments or injuries. Adorable! Brrrrrrrrr..... Feel the chill of an Antarctic Storm up close and personal. Bundle up in a long coat, put on shoe covers and enter the Storm Dome. Every hour, an Antarctic Storm drops the temperature from minus 8 degrees Celsius to minus 18. Amazed at how well the coats provided keep you comfortable. But still, so cold! Explore Antarctica in the galleries. Watch the 4D movie. The 360 gallery had such beautiful images of the continent, penguins and whales. Loved learning about the research that happens with international cooperation and how the scientists prepare to live in Antarctica. Huskies!! Who can resist playing with huskies? So cute and so friendly. My parents especially loved this part. A great way to end the day at the International Antarctic Centre. Support the center with a purchase in the gift shop. They had a sale on two tea towels for $2 NZD. We also grabbed some magnets and beanies for friends and family back home. On the return to Lyttleton, Scotty drove by the estuary and the beach suburb via Evans Pass which was closed for more than 7 years following the Christchurch earthquake of 2011 due to cliff collapse. Imagine the devastation, but nice to see how the community has banded together to help each other.

        Could have been better.
Overall good but it was obvious that the tour guide had little knowledge of the wine region and had not even tried any of the 3 vineyards wine. One of the cellar doors (Georges Road) was great with wine that showed the skills of the winemaker. My wife and I thought the other 2 were really average. The other participants made for good company. My advice to the operator of the tours is, employ people who know the product and region to make the day more enjoyable and informative.

Good tour for cruise ship visitors if your time is limited.🚢
Picked up directly from where the cruise ship transfer point in Lyttelton. Good overview of Christchurch if your time is limited. The Antarctic Centre was the highlight thanks to our guide Karen with the bonus of seeing the new Husky Puppy, Thanks also to Andrew for making the tour very enjoyable and informative. 🙂

        bus breakdown and no communication
Stay away from this vendor. It was the worst experience ever. We went out about 30 minutes and the bus broke down and all the anti-freeze poured out. The driver put water bottles in the bus and flagged down a bicyclist for a screw driver. He claimed it was fixed and we continued on. The first viewing stop, he added water into the empty water bottles into the bus. We continued on, instead of going back. We went into town for a lunch break, which was not long enough to eat. Then we finally got to the Antarctic Center. He was filling the bus up again with water. We expected another mode of transportation back, since we were there for over two hours. The bus started loosing water again as we headed back to the ship. He stopped again at a gas station and filled up the bus again. He communicated we would only make it back to the Princess shuttle busses. He did not refund us any money or apologize. We were lucky to get back to the Princess shuttles, otherwise we would have missed the ship. Never again. I sent a letter to the company and he sent back a very condescending email and never refused any of our money for this more than stressful excursion

        Lyttelton/Christchurch tour
My Wife & I along with 2 of our good friends took this tour Monday 8th of April 2024, our tour guide was awesome, he was a very friendly, colorful character with a big bushy white beard, in bright Green Shoes & hat with red & Black Checkered pants, he explained liquefaction & why the earthquake was so devastating to the City of Christchurch, his knowledge of the city redesign/rebuild, buildings, earthquakes & geology was amazing, he explained the red zone and what that entailed, he gave us so many suggestions of where to eat lunch and what to look at. The only very minor negative was as we were from a cruise ship, docked in Lyttelton we needed more time to have lunch free explore the city centre of Christchurch & look at some of his suggestions.

Shore excursion - good way to see and learn about the area.
We enjoyed this shore excursion and learned a lot about the area in the short time we had on shore. The city was severely damaged by an earthquake and aftershocks in 2011 and is still undergoing construction. Our guide was a local and shared a lot of good information about the area.

Great Guide, Great Company, Great City!
Had the absolute best day with Di... She was a lifetime local and had so many great stories and was so engaging and personable. The morning tour of the city with just two other people was beautiful and Christchurch is at the top of our list to come back and discover... One day off the cruise ship wasn't enough! After the morning, we picked up more people and headed to the wine tastings. The small group we had from around the world became fast friends. We had such an amazing afternoon of wine tasting, beautiful views and friendly people. We didn't want it to end! Thanks for the great day!

We booked this and it was amazing! Our trip guide, Pete, was absolutely INCREDIBLE and really made the drive up and back enjoyable. The whale watching park was great as well. We saw dophi s, albatross and a sperm whale. We would definitely recommend for others.

Lyttleton and Christchurch Beautiful, had an amazing tour guide. Learned about the devastating earthquake of 2010, city is still rebuilding. Would like to have known more about the current things happening rather than just the old stuff.

Coming from Australia, they said New Zealand is a small country. Don’t be fooled, it’s much larger than you think. And it packs an even larger visual punch. Be prepared for some long road trips on comfortable buses with a magnificent train ride back to Christchurch (we began our journey in Christchurch) to end a fantastic tour.
All the key sights are covered. The tour brings together different operators for different sections right down to local taxi services to get you to your destination of the day. Not a single missed connection. It ran like clockwork.
You won’t be able to take enough pictures. There’s plenty of good food and bar options at every destination. Take advantage of your free day in Queenstown and prebook an adventure of your choice. Lots of quality restaurants for dinner as well.
Lastly, the coach drivers are informative, friendly and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble. You spend a fair amount of time on the bus getting to the various destinations but the end result of these natural treasures is to take your breath away.
This tour is well worth considering.

As 1st timers to NZ we had completed the Auckland to Wellington Northern Explorer scenic rail-trip and then The Interislander Ferry to Picton before starting on this prearranged 5-day tour. A bucket-list life-time experience that every eager tourist should experience. The weather was great and the coach pickups, trips and lodgings arranged (New Zealand Fine Touring Group) were perfect. The scenery - well what else but fantastic. Through a free day in Queenstown, Milford Sound, Franz Josef Glacier, etc.. all and back to Christchurch - not one bad experience - so grateful!

Excuse the late reply. We didn't get a notification about this review and I've only just seen this now. Any way, I just want to say thank you very much for the kind words. Our south island package tours are becoming some of our most popular tours for the simple reason of, as you said, it ticks all the bucket list items. It's great to hear that everything went so smoothly and you were graced with nice weather and zero mishaps. We certainly hope you enjoyed the rest of your NZ vacation and get the opportunity to visit us again sometime.

We totally enjoyed our tour of the South Island with Canterbury Leisure Tours. The itinerary was delivered to our hotel in Christchurch as promised. We were promptly picked up for all of our connections. The bus drivers were for the most part friendly, informative and entertaining. We were given plenty of time to view the many sights of Queenstown, Mt. Cook, Fiordland, Franz Josef and all the places in between. The train from Greymouth to Christchurch was especially interesting and informational. Accommodations were excellent, comfortable and relaxing. We could not have put together a trip like this on our own as it was very well coordinated and extensive in breadth. This was a fantastic tour of the South Island.

This was an exceptionally well organised independent tour. All transport was on time as per the schedule, it is worth being at pick up points a little early as services are very prompt. Hotels were of a good quality and in good locations. The days break at Queenstown is perfect after the long day at Milford Sound. Can’t praise the organisation of tour enough, the company exceeded our expectations.

The driver Marc took us to and from Franz Josef Glacier on Nov 7 & 8 had very bad attitude. He yelled at us for being late but it was not the case, the previous driver Robbie did not tell us what time to get back to the coach after the coffee break on Nov 7. When Marc took over, he went on and on broadcasting on board saying we were late. Being sarcastic the whole time. The next morning when he picked us up from Franz Josef Glacier to the Train station, he arrived at 9am. The itinerary showing the pick up time was 9:10am so when we arrived at 9:09am (WE WERE ON TIME) he started to yell at us. He said we were late again and the pick up time was 9am. I shown him the itinerary, he just ignored me and said if we were late again he was going to throw our bags out and leave without us. This is unreasonable and unacceptable. He ruined our holiday completely.

Having now had the opportunity to investiagte this matter I can advise as follows; The driver actually remembers the incident quite clearly. The couple were not initially there when he arrived to pick them up in Franz Josef, they arrived at 0912. The driver had driven them the previous day and they had been late getting back to the coach when stopping at the Salmon farm in Paringa. The driver informed them that the company policy when passengers are not present at time of departure is to ring our Supervisors and inform them of the missing passengers, following that he will depart without them if both he and the supervisors have been unable to locate them. This is our normal procedure as the drivers have to also think about the other passengers on board that have returned on time for the bus. The correct pick up time is 0910 however as per our GPS the driver didn’t depart until 0912. All other passengers from the hotel had been checked in between 0902-0906. They were checked in at 0912. Marc has been driving with us since 2015 so is one of our more experienced drivers.

This was the most flexible tour I've ever seen. If you can't find exactly what you want, just let them know and I'm confident they will work it out exactly as you want. I appreciated that everyone on the tour seemed to have a different origin, stays, and destination and was amazed they were able to keep everyone straight. I wasn't able to make the connections with other travelers I had hoped for, though, with all the turnover. The scenery was beautiful and I really lucked out with gorgeous weather. My name was misspelled at the train station, a small glitch that was easily overcome since I had copied my email confirmation to the notes in my phone and could access without wifi. The delivery to my hotel was a glitch that was not as easily overcome. The shuttle dropped me off across the street because.... there was too much traffic!?! So I crossed a wet road in the dark, wearing dark clothes, dragging a large suitcase and carrying a heavy shoulder bag in between the heavy traffic. Delivery to my hotel was a wonderful amenity, but I wasn't a big fan of how it was accomplished. Would have given a five rating other than that.

Thank you for the great review. I'm glad you enjoyed your time on our 5 day South Island tour. Yes, it has been excellent weather recently down south - particularly in Milford Sound which has had incredible weather over the past few weeks. Thank you for praising our flexibility with our multi day tours. We do our very best to cater to customer's needs and provide different options and add ons if need be. I'm sorry to hear that your name was misspelled and that you weren't dropped off at your hotel but instead across the street. Occasionally when we make bookings, suppliers such as the train can make a simple mistake of misspelling names on the booking. The majority of the time it is easily overcome, as was the case with you. As for the shuttle drop off, I'm sorry to hear that happened and thanks for for reporting this. We will take this up with the transfer company to assure that it doesn't happen again. Once again, thanks for the great review and I hope you visit New Zealand again at some point in the future!

Comfortable coach. Came on time.Only drawback was the pickup at Queenstown was at the bus stop near the Hotel rather than from the hotel lobby. Inclement weather can make the wait at the busstop uncomfortable. The coach driver guide Stuart on the Christchurch to Queenstown run was excellent. Very knowledgable on almost everything from history to geology , to botany . Almost continuous talk which we enjoyed very much. True enthusiast of South Island. The guide the next day to Milford Sound too was very good, but the standard dropped on the following two days. Thr driver talked so much about the Salmon farm that we built our expectations. It turned out to be a small time business and only the first 5 people could order Salmon. The staff were not interested in the business, and probably seasonal .

Thanks for the great review. I'm pleased to hear you had a nice time on your 5 Day South Island Tour. And it's great to hear you enjoyed the commentary from your guides from Christchurch to Queenstown and on the Milford Sound Nature Cruise. I'll be sure to pass on your praise to them. It's sad to hear that the standard of the guides dropped on your second trip to Franz Josef. The salmon farm is usually just a shortstop and, as you mentioned, very weather dependent - it is not usually apart of the standard itinerary. However, we will pass on your feedback to both the driver and the salmon farm operators. And as for the pick up, the reason there are central pickups is to avoid the passengers sitting in the coach for up to an hour whilst the coach is going around doing all of the pickups at different hotels. It allows passengers to be picked as quickly as possible, so the tour can commence and not arrive too late in Queenstown. I'm sorry to hear that the weather made this wait uncomfortable. Thanks again for the great review and I hope you visit New Zealand again soon.

This was a different tour for us, with different days of the tour run by different operators. Everything was seamlessly coordinated by Leisure Tours, even to arranging a taxi pickup from our hotel to get us to the bus terminal. We were pleasantly surprised with the coach drivers' commentary on the intercity bus trips. We too enjoyed Tom's singing and sense of humour. The places we visited on the way were a good cross section of interesting sights of the south island. Finally, we want to thank Dennis and Leisure Tours for the excellent way they arranged for transport when inclement weather caused the cancellation of the Tranzalpine train. The road trip, stopping at points of interest, was an enjoyable and informative alternative to the train.

I am pleased you enjoyed your tour even with the weather being somewhat disruptive towards the end of the trip. I hope you have the opportunity to visit the South Island of New Zealand again at some future day.
