What to expect
Your The Lord of the Rings day trip to the fictional village of Edoras in New Zealand’s Canterbury Region begins with morning pickup from your hotel. Hop into the 4WD vehicle for a drive west to Mt Sunday, better-known to LOTR fans as Edoras — the capital of Rohan and home to Meduseld, the hall of King Theoden. You’ll bump along rocky terrain and traverse narrow streams en route to Edoras. On arrival at the movie site, follow in the footsteps of the noblewoman Eowyn, and stand at the summit for 360-degree views over alpine lakes, mountain peaks and high-country farmland below. Your guide shares behind-the-scenes photos of Edoras under construction and points out significant geographical features of Middle-earth, including the Misty Mountains, the river Snowbourn and the valley of Harrowdale against the imposing Helms Deep. Learn why this particular site was selected by director Peter Jackson for The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Enjoy a picnic lunch (see the Itinerary for a sample menu) with a glass of sparkling wine, and pose for photos with replica props such as the flag of Rohan, Gimli’s axe, or the sword of Aragorn or King Theoden. Then hop back in your 4WD vehicle for the drive back to your Christchurch hotel, where your Edoras excursion comes to an end.

Day tour
A fantastic tour that takes you into some of the best scenery in New Zealand as well as learning about different aspects of lord of rings . Even if you are not a big fan of the movie , I would certainly recommend this experience for the beauty and wilderness .

Best tour ever
Sep 2020 • Solo
This tour is the best tour I’ve ever been on and worth every cent I’ve paid (and more!). I recommend this to anyone, LOTR fan or not. The scenery was breathtaking and beyond this world; no photo can do justice. The tour was also well-run, with a very professional, thoughtful, and knowledgable guide. Put this on your must-do list in your next trip around New Zealand.

Must do for all LOTR fans!
Mar 2020
This was one of our favourite tours on our trip in New Zealand. Maria was our fantastic tour guide, full of interesting knowledge and kept the small group of us entertained throughout, especially during our long drive from Christchurch. She looked after us well and the lunch was tasty! The tour itself was well organised and spots we were taken to were beautiful. I definitely recommend hassle back tours.

An amazing day even if you’re not a LOTR fan!
Mar 2020 • Friends
This was a great day out: a small group trip out with an informed, entertaining guide. The scenery was so spectacular that it’s a terrific experience even for those who aren’t Lord of the Rings fans! Not physically difficult, and a delicious lunch. Highly recommended!!

Epic location!
Mar 2020
THe destination of this trip was epic. A must do for any Lord of the Rings fan!
The trip from Chrsitchurch was a long one, keep in mind it takes the hole day, being on location is app. one and an half hour.
Still the journey was never dull with our driver and guide Maria, who told interesting stories on the way. For a well informed LotR fan it was not the LotR stories that were the most interesting, but her stories of the villages and nature.
I took her advice and went to the Red Zone on my last day in Chrchr.

Edoras is one of the magnificient locations, so go there if you can!

Perfect for any Lord of the Rings Lover!
Jan 2020
This trip was absolutely fantastic! I would highly recommend this for any Lord of the Rings fan! Hassle Free Tours picked us up and dropped us off directly from our hotel, so we did not have to worry about transportation. We were on a 4WD bus with two tour guides full of knowledge about the surrounding area and LOTR. Once on our way, we stopped at a beautiful lake and then continued on the way to Edoras. Edoras itself was beautiful and is a must-see. If you so choose, you can even take up a sword or two and the Rohan flag!

Best Excursion on our whole Cruise!
Mar 2020
This was by far the best excursion we had. Though I'm sure they have 4WD tours. Ours was on a big tour bus that drove up and deposited us at the foot of Mt Sunday for some picture taking at the foot of the mountain. Due to the length of time it took to get here from our cruise ship, we didn't get a chance to spend much time here. Now with that said, why did I rate this 5 stars. The services from Hassle Free Tours were the 5 stars. The hospitable tea and meal provided by the tour group were nice additions, but the star of the entire drive was our driver Barry. The guy is a gem! He regaled us with stories of his history as a police officer as well as tidbits of the history of New Zealand. Once he started talking about his history with the filming of the Lord of the Rings, every one and I mean everyone in the bus was just amazed. He kept us entertained THE ENTIRE DRIVE! All by himself! Whether it was witty jokes, interesting tidbits, or just being himself, we loved Barry. The first thing we did after the cruise was to check our recording of the movies as we had them on ipad on the ship . . . his name was there in the role he said. Hassle Free Tours - you've got a gem in Barry. If we are ever in Christchurch again and can do another tour with him, we would love it. Thank you for an amazing set of memories and best of wishes to you all! Hope the travel scare right now will pass and you continue to succeed! Wish you all the best!

I took the trip with Maria the other day, and it was excellent.
For every fan of the Lord of the Rings this is a Must-See location.
There are no ways to describe (or I am not poetic enough) but it's everything you can imagine.
What a location!

Well worth it!
Feb 2020
My first time to NZ and I couldn't have started it better. Booked our tickets from Australia, before we left, and arranged for pick up at Methven Information Centre. Bus arrived promptly on time. We were greeted by Hammond, who was our driver for the day. He was a font of knowledge, having worked in the sound industry and also with Peter Jackson on the LOTR movies. Hammond knew this locality and the weather and warned us that the wind builds up where we will be going.
Everything was great about this tour! The tour guide, the added props, the light lunch afterwards and even the morning coffee break at the Staveley Store.
Highly recommended, you won't forget it!
